Im African Americsn and 64 years young lol. But I remember back in the early 70s when Neil Young released the Harvest album and it was a huge deal at the time. Not only was Harvest huge but Neil Young was part of the supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Old Man was my favorite on that album and Ive listened to it many times back then. Its a poignant tune that brings back many memories and your open minded observations are on point. Its good to listen to all kinds of music and the fact that you can clearly see that Young has and still has a raw talent is very telling of your observational skills. I wish you were my grandaughter..lol.

He was already big by this time, having cofounded Buffalo Springfield and playing with Crosby, Stills, and Nash (which became Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young). Everytime I hear that song it makes me think of my dad. He passed away in 2002 and I never got to thank him and tell him how much I love him for all the sacrifice he made for me , and I know now he only trying to show me the best way to live life . As a young teenager I thought he didn't know much about anything , but now as an adult with kids I see so plainly what he was saying. In my life who has had trouble with relationships, financial hardships and addictions that I have fought since I graduated high school makes me realize, if I would have followed his advice I could have avoided all of those problems. This song makes me tear up because it reminds me of him so much. Didn't tell you then , but Dad , I love you. RIP.

As someone born in the 1960s, and having literally grew up on this music, it really warms my heart to see people discovering this music for the first time... so I really like these first time reaction videos.
I must admit, I hadn't listened to this Neil Young song in a month of Sundays, because I tend to stay up with current rock and alt-rock trends, and I *really love* listening to new music then guessing their influences from the past 60 years of rockabilly, soul, R&B, rock and roll, psychedelic rock, art rock, pop rock, disco, big hair bands, hip hop, rap, alt-rock, progressive rock, industrial, heavy metal, electronic, and everything in between... you can hear the influences of all these great bands seeping into each through the years, as well as hear the influences in current music, and it's a wonderful thing.

This song was on his album Harvest. Heart of Gold was another big hit on that album.
Neil Young has a long history. He used to be in the band Buffalo Springfield with Stephan Stills. When Buffalo Springfield broke up, a new band was formed called Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
CSNY has a mega long history but Neil Young was only with them part time. CSN stayed together for decades.
Neil Young went solo in the very early 70’s I believe.
The famous song everybody knows, Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd was written to defend their state after Neil Young wrote a song called Alabama that was critical of the state (also on the Harvest album). His name is mentioned in the lyrics of Sweet Home Alabama.
I’ve always loved his folk/rock songs but never cared for his all rock songs. Most real Neil Young fans love his rock songs.
His sound is iconic. 3 verses of Old Man that stay with me forever are, “24 and there’s so much more”, “give me things that won’t get lost, like a coin that won’t get tossed”, and my favorite, “it doesn’t mean that much to me to mean that much to you”. Such a great line and a life lesson on being yourself without the worry of what someone else thinks.
    Love your reaction. More tears!!!

Hey PMH I just started watching your videos & what I like about them is that you react both an emotional level & to the skill of the artist which is way cool! Neil Young is an excellent singer, songwriter & guitarist. He got his start in a band called Buffalo Springfield in the 1960's & one of his best songs with them was Mr Soul. Then he went on to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young & then solo. Some other fine songs by him that you might want to check out are Cinnamon Girl, Southern Man, Like A hurricane, Cortez The Killer, Ohio , Only Love Can Break Your Heart & his primo golden song Heart Of Gold. there are many more. he is both a great acoustic player & electric player & he is still going strong today!

I love Neil Young! I've seen him in concert twice, once with Crazy Horse, performing their rock opera Greendale (with a whole cast of actors acting scenes of everything he was singing, replete with sets, backdrops, video screens, etc.) And once with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. I love how his voice and his songs are so honest. Sometimes I just want some rugged honesty in the music that I hear; I prefer that over any technical perfect singer any day. I would recommend any one of his albums. Even if you were to pick up his greatest hits and give that a listen, you will be amazed. His entire body of work is incredible, some songs are simple like this, some are hard rocking, some are disarmingly offbeat, but I'm sure you'll find that even the work he's done that is weaker is hundreds of times more interesting than the works of a lot of current artists. I would also recommend watching this entire BBC performance, its intimate, its casual, you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be entertained, you'll be amazed. But you don't have to take my word for it, just trust me and watch this entire performance!

This is just one of his iconic songs...What strikes me about this is you can tell the audience had never heard it before, otherwise they would have broken into applause right off, because it's such a well known classic...Neil, as a writer/performer takes a back seat to no one...Of course he was a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young...When they played at the original Woodstock, he refused to let them film him, so he was not in the movie. He can be heard, but remained off camera...Definitely his own man.

Neil Young has this amazing ability to live in the present, and like the hippies tried in the 60s and 70s and like they did as primarily farmers as the settlers did when they invaded North America. Neil is part Native American like me, so we can relate. 100 million people lost that way of thinking, so the old man who lived like the hippies did, lived like the Native Americans did. Neil's soul is like the soul of the past, early pioneer immigrants that lived off farming and the hippies in the 60s and the leftover remnants who noticed that this way of life, farming, hunting, and gathering was actually the permanent state of mankind. Catch a little buzz, show love and peace along the way. Neil Young is not a dazzling guitar wizard, but the soul and meaning of this ability to capture souls from the past makes him amazing in his own special way. One of the greatest composers and peace/human rights/green earth persons, Neil Young.

What is beautiful about this song is of course the clean finger picking, and seems to be playing a bass line in there. His rhythm is dead on and so needs no drum. His vocals are raw and imperfect in their perfection.
The subject matter is that we are all in this life mirroring one another in the endless routine of living and dying.

Neil Young is from Canada. He was struck by what he saw when he visited the South, U.S. back in the early 70’s enough to write a song about it and attend various public events.
Besides that another good song from him is “Down by the River”.
    Thanks for reviewing this song!

Neil Young is from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, where my Dad is from, (well Neil lived some time in Ontario). The old house is still there in Winnipeg and one day the current owners were surprised by a knock on the door. It was Bob Dylan. He asked to come in and see Neil’s bedroom. He told the owners he wanted to see what Neil looked out the window at when he was growing up. Helpless is one of the most beautiful songs Neil did with Cosby Stills Nash and Young. Thanks for your teaction❤️

Neil's body of work solo and with Crazy Horse is immense. This barely brushes the surface of the beautiful music he has created and btw, Crazy Horse is an absolutely phenomenal band. SO MANY awesome songs to listen to: Words (Between the Lines of Age), Alabama, You are Like a Hurricane, Cinnamon Girl, Heart of Gold, Hey Hey My My (Into the Black), and Over and Over is a relatively newer and obscure incredible jam! What an incredible artist indeed.
