In 1969 at the age of 24 Neil was sick with a 103° fever and was bored so he sat down and wrote 3 songs.. Cinnamon Girl, Down By The River and Cowgirl In The Sand.. and forever cemented himself as a pillar of rock and roll as an ICON!!
Could you imagine watching Neil Young in concert in 1972, and he says, "here are a couple new tunes" and then proceeds to play "Heart of Gold" and "Old Man." Those incredibly lucky people had to realize they were listening to all-time classics.
We did, we did! My friends and I went to one show at the Opera House in Seattle which was fabulous for the acoustics of his beautiful Martin guitars and that voice.

So Neil's mom lived in New Smyrna Beach, FL, where he actually went to early elementary school. Some time in the mid 80's I was performing in a duo doing mostly covers with a good friend. We heard that Neil was in town visiting his mom who was sick. We were playing at a local watering hole and there was Neil eating and listening to the music. On a break my partner insisted on going to tell him what a fan he was so we went over to his table. My buddy told him that we were huge fans of his and apologized for bothering him Neil was as nice as anyone could be and talked to us, even complimented our music. He is as nice a human being as his music is great.
Neil Young, (born November 12, 1945, Toronto, Ontario, Canada), Canadian guitarist, singer, and songwriter best known for his idiosyncratic output and eclectic sweep, from solo folkie to grungy guitar-rocker. Early career: Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Young grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with his mother after her divorce from his father, a well-known Canadian sportswriter.
Neil was born in Toronto, then spent his boyhood in Omemee, Ontario -- about 100 miles northeast of Toronto, before moving to Winnipeg in his early teens. -- About three years ago, he returned to his hometown of Omemee e, and played a televised concert in small theater there. In his song, "Helpless", the opening lyrics... "There is a town in North Ontario Dream comfort memory to spare And in my mind I still need a place to go All my changes were there." ....he's singing about Omemee.
The family was taking an extended vacation in the warm climate of Florida which they thought would aid in Neil's recovery from polio. I quoted this song when I toasted my brother and his wife's wedding. I was my brother's best man. I congratulated him on finally finding his heart of gold.
Neil young is/was one of my all time favorite musicians, that being said I’m with jeff. Back in the day him and David Crosby , Steven stills, and gram Nash were on the cutting edge of political activism. Songs like Ohio spoke to that generation about the injustice wrought on the American people. He spoke out against the establishment and despised the man. Now he is the man, we become what we hate. To reach that level in the entertainment business a dues must be paid and when the powers tell you to bark , little puppy you better start barking. I’ve since stopped listening to his music because I no longer believe in him. I was a fan for 40 years, seen him in concert 9 times, there are many musicians I stopped listening to because of their selling out. Jamal brother man you should checkout joy villa. Look her up first see what she’s about then check out her music. What you know about bob Marley, bunny whaler, Peter tosh? There is a whole other genre to explore.
@@mitchgsmovies The man we become to hate? I don't know what kind of man you love. Neil is a decant man and has stayed true to his ideals and music for 70 years.
Jamal, we DO care about you! We love sharing the great old music of our youth with you because we know you will appreciate it like we did when we first heard it! Neil is one of the few artists who didn't sell out. Him and Bob Dylan. Stays true to his principles. Also want to mention that he had 2 sons with cerebral palsy. He created the Bridge School Benefit and gave annual charity concerts for 30 years in Mountain View, Ca. to raise money for kids with disabilities. I went to one of them where Paul McCartney played.
I love how you can tell through your facial expressions that you have appreciation for a types of music. Neil is one of my all time favorites because of his "old soul." I'm 26 and feel like so many of his songs resonate with me still.
Alive and well, married to Daryl Hanna now I believe. He's a full fledged member of the R&R Hall of fame, played with the Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills, Nash and Young. He's a legend. The fun thing about this show is that these songs were so new at this point, so you're seeing him playing them early on, it's brilliant.
Neil Young, one of the greatest artists of the sixties, and he packed stadiums and sold millions of records Everyone knew of Neil Young and now you know why.
A friend of mine's daughter waited on him after a show in Omaha, Nebraska, and said he was very nice, and a polite customer. No ego, nothing. Just straight up good dude. Nice to hear he treats others well when out for a meal and meeting the general public. Good for Neal!!
Try "A Man Needs A Maid." It's haunting; it really gets to you. Also you might check out songs he did as a member of Buffalo Springfield like "Mr. Soul" and "I Am Child."
You will find Jamal, the more you react to neil's music, that Neil can't be pigeonholed into one genre of music. People want to lable him the grandfather of grunge, which i think is bull, Neil is rock, hard rock, folk, folk rock, country, and country rock. Depending on what mood your in Neil has a song for it.
Neil Young is still out performing, and still killing on stage. I've seen him at least 3 times, last time about two years ago as part of Willie Nelson's Outlaw Music Tour. He is amazing.
Cinnamon Girl is a classic. When he was with Crosby, Stills and Nash they created some beautiful music as well. Good '60's protest stuff. You should look up Southern Man anything off of 4-Way Street album.
You can pick any Neil Young song and realize he is an "old soul" his talent and storytelling ability still amazes me 50 years later. His 1992 release "Harvest Moon" was an instant classic. Words cannot describe how his music effects me!! Rock on Mr. Young!
The raw, authentic talent and heartfelt performance by Neil Young here, a collection of skin, cells.. stardust expressing himself/ itself to the best of his ability makes me feel a glimpse of the divine. It’s so pure 🙏🏻. Thank you Neil
You bring tears to my eyes for "discovering" Neil. In case no one has mentioned it, he used to be part of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. All worth listening to. There were some serious changes going on in the 60's and 70's and music was our way of expressing our emotions.
Stumbled upon this. I’m 63 and these songs are on my favorite album of all time, Harvest. Thanks for your perspective. Alive and well last time I looked. Does a lot to promote better quality in recorded sound. Lived in SF Bay Area for many years and does great charity work. Check out that whole album. Neil Young is one of the most important singer songwriters of the late 20th Century. this is an otherworldly song that comes from another time and dimension....... it is timeless...... Jamel is always struck instantly by the most meaningful parts of the song... " doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you..... I've been first and last, ...look at how the time goes past"...
Check out "Cinnamon Girl", "Rockin' in the Free World", "Harvest Moon" and also go to Crosby, Nash and Young(CSNY) and look at their Music.
Mark Thompson, don't forget Buffalo Springfield with Stephen Stills
Seriously! CSNY simply cant go wrong. Please, please, check out Harvest Moon, most romantic aong ever
Type O Negative did a completely awesome cover of "Cinnamon Girl" that IMHO surpasses the original. Jamel needs to hear that one.
Yes yes and more yes!!!!
@@todddawson9901 That's why I mentioned it
He's obviously a soft spoken, shy man but yet he found the strength to put himself out there and speak his truth. I'm in awe of men and women like this. Thank you Jamel for helping me rediscover this beautiful soul. And you ain't bad yourself Jamel.
Neil Young is still alive, thank god. "Old Soul" indeed. Try Harvest Moon, and I also love Cinnamon Girl.
Jamal, I listen to you because you have great reviews. I’m 75 years, and I can almost always tell a kind heart. You my man, do have a heart of gold.
Yes, he is very much alive.
React to: 'into the black'
Then 'out of the blue'
And recently married to someone as funny as himself ... Daryl Hannah. Can just picture their life as a married couple lol.
@@RedDawnRocker unbelievable . she was a hottie in the 80's
My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue) and Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)
One acoustic and one electric. Uncle Neil is one of the greatest of all time. Not as many people know his music now because he refuses to let his music be used in commercials.
Omg I just commented on this! Yes! CSNY! You MUST listen to Carry On. Suite Judy Blue Eyes. Helplessly Hoping. Helpless. These guys can harmonize! Beautiful music! ❤️
He's alive, well. He's deep. Had polio as a child. Good song about his childhood home is "Helpless" Look for the video.
I think 2 of his wives died aswell? And his sons have very bad disabilities, theyre both bound to wheelchairz
@@danielhayes8348 Ben, the older son, who must be at least 40 by now, has profound cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. Zeke has mild CP and is very functioning, getting around on his own and holding a job.
I love Helpless
Neil said that as a result of his polio the left side of his body is weak and it affects his guitar playing......
I quoted this song when I toasted my brother and his wife's wedding. I was my brother's best man. I congratulated him on finally finding his heart of gold.
One you are less likely to have heard before, I think, is "Needle and the Damage Done." It's short and sad, as you might imagine. Real good though.
This has always been my favorite but I've never seen anyone react to it.
Absolutely.
My favorite Neil Young song. I'd love to see a reaction to 'Needle...'
You have to hear his song Harvest moon, It's great.
Albert Mauriello awesome song.
The MTV Unplugged version is amazing.
The old hippie is still kickin. As much an activist as a musician still.
this is where I quit being a fan of his. His music is great.. just don"t want to hear your celebrity opinion.
I believes brain cancer. Pretty sure
@@jeffklatt4835 He's always been political, if you didn't know then you aren't much of a fan. Keep on Rockin' in the Free World tho
@@mitchgsmovies The man we become to hate? I don't know what kind of man you love. Neil is a decant man and has stayed true to his ideals and music for 70 years.
He makes some funny comments and then goes into one of the most powerful and saddest heartfelt songs ever!
That’s Neil Young! One of the greats!
😎🎸👏🏻
Jamal, we DO care about you! We love sharing the great old music of our youth with you because we know you will appreciate it like we did when we first heard it! Neil is one of the few artists who didn't sell out. Him and Bob Dylan. Stays true to his principles. Also want to mention that he had 2 sons with cerebral palsy. He created the Bridge School Benefit and gave annual charity concerts for 30 years in Mountain View, Ca. to raise money for kids with disabilities. I went to one of them where Paul McCartney played.
When I went to secondary school in Canada, the 70's, we studied his lyrics in English class.
"Southern Man". Ole Neil called out racism way before it was stylish.
Alabama too
He sure did
Racism was only ever stylish long before Neil Young was born.
@@nodiggity9472 Calling out racism not racism itself so you misunderstood me.
They are still paying the price of ignorant Injustice, the new generation know it and will change it ...Peace and Safety..
You're so right...wisdom beyond his years....He cares about the music.and he cares about humanity....
Linda Ronstadt was Neil's opening act.
Neil Young is still alive he's married to actress Daryl Hannah. Also neil young is one of the greatest singer songwriters of all time
A friend of mine's daughter waited on him after a show in Omaha, Nebraska, and said he was very nice, and a polite customer. No ego, nothing. Just straight up good dude. Nice to hear he treats others well when out for a meal and meeting the general public. Good for Neal!!
I wouldn't expect any different from him.
He’s a nice Canadian boy. But his talent seemed to be bigger than him almost.
Lol. Neil is a good and polite Canadian!!!
Check out Neil Young with Crazy Horse singing "Cinnamon Girl", one of my favorite songs.....
Try "A Man Needs A Maid." It's haunting; it really gets to you. Also you might check out songs he did as a member of Buffalo Springfield like "Mr. Soul" and "I Am Child."
"hey hey my my","my my hey hey","sugar mountain","powder finger","keep on rockin in a free world"☮️ out
Like A Hurricane live man. That one is just insanely good. Remember the video ?
He was part of Crosby Stills, Nash, and Young. He spine out for Civil Rights. Southern man is powerful.
And they played Woodstock. Such legends.
He is a great humanitarian and has put himself out there to help people for decades. Thanks for your personal stories and humor.
You would like ' Ohio ' and ' Cinnamon Girl ' by him also
Definitely cinnamon girl also powderfinger.
Cortez the Killer too.
Harvest Moon is one of my faves
Yes, agree, also Harvest Moon. Such a great song
Ohio is Crosby Stills Nash and Young. Not just Neil Young.
Neil Young is still out performing, and still killing on stage. I've seen him at least 3 times, last time about two years ago as part of Willie Nelson's Outlaw Music Tour. He is amazing.
“Helpless”, what a lyricist, being from Northern Ontario, I must say this song is loved..
“Harvest Moon”, just need to listen & smile❣️🇨🇦
Harvest Moon is the story you need, Jamal.
Harvest Moon is so gorgeous ❤️
Second both of those motions...
🎶There is a town..in North Ontario...🎶
Collette Dauphinais Harvest Moon...he’s showing his romantic side. Love it.
Of course we care about you man, that's why we continue to invite you into our houses and lives to share the magic of music together
Rock on Mr. Young!
Another great story teller is James Taylor... "Fire And Rain"
david yerkey I love James Taylor, but comparing him to Neil isn’t fair. Neil is amongst the best song writers ever whereas James isn’t. Nuff said.
I was supposed to see him in April, then this virus happened :(
Yes, and he also performed back up vocals on this album with Linda Ronstadt ..
Carolina in my mind
Now you gotta do Neil Young’s “Hey Hey, My My”! Then after that do Neil Young & Pearl Jam doing “Keep On Rockin in the Free World”! Both are a MUST!
^This
92 MTV music awards. Best version. The energy. The boys from Pearl Jam trying to keep up with Neil. The best.
Neil's look matches his vocal sound far better now that he's in his 70s. He's certainly still kickin', though...
The raw, authentic talent and heartfelt performance by Neil Young here, a collection of skin, cells.. stardust expressing himself/ itself to the best of his ability makes me feel a glimpse of the divine. It’s so pure 🙏🏻. Thank you Neil
Yes he's still alive and puts on a great show. He's part of Farm Aid every year.
Ohio is a great song based on a historical event, with Neil Young
That just had its unfortunate 50th anniversary.
The Kent State killings was a tragedy!
Apparently CSN/CSNY reactions get taken down a lot. Might be a waste of time, not listening to it but making a video.
John Campbell an unfortunate event but not an unfortunate anniversary because that means it isn’t forgotten
@r__p__m Are you so sure that Neil isn't part of the blocking?
That song was my husbands love song to me. He asked to have a heart carved on his headstone with heart of gold inscr
Neil Young, a canadian, one of the best guitar player ever !
I agree on previous comment to check out Needle and the Damage Done. Thanks! Love your show.
Jamel: Don't Let It Bring You Down from this same show is really powerful.
It really is. His voice is haunting.
That's a cool tune, also Ohio and Man Needs a Maid
Yes he's still here, thank goodness! Neil's classic and always rocking no matter!
So much love for Neil. "Hey, Hey, My, My" is another great and relevant song by Mr. Young. 🖤🤘
Oh, y'want some more Neil?
Down by the River, Ohio (actually as CSNY song, but he's the Y in that name), After the Gold Rush, Southern Man, Cinnamon Girl, The Needle and the Damage Done, Rockin' in the Free World, Like a Hurricane, Hey Hey My My (Into the Black), Harvest Moon, The Old Laughing Lady, Cowgirl in the Sand
have not heard cowgirl in the sand in a long time...may have to look that one up...thanks red
ANY of the songs above.
Powderfinger
I recommend (HIGHLY) if you haven't heard it, the Indigo Girls version of "Down by the River" from 1200 Curfews. It's otherworldly!
@@JazzDrummer1946 I moved from Columbus to Cincinnati in 1988 when REM's Green album came out. We went to see them at the Arena (where the famous The Who tragedy happened 11 years earlier) and this band called Indigo Girls opened for them--never heard of them at that point--but what a show! I just pulled up the TH-cam video of this on 1200 Curfews and went straight to Amazon and ordered it! Thanks!
I could never emphasis in words what Neil young means to me.
I saw Neil Young live in the Twin Cities in the 1980s. I, to this day, tell everybody that it was the best concert I ever saw (and I saw a LOT of concerts back then). Neil never left the stage. His guys took a break and he stayed on stage and played "Needle and the Damage Done". Blew me away. Thanks for doing this song, Jamal. Love your videos. They bring me a lot of joy. Blessings to you.
Try "The needle and the damage done" and for a contrast "Crime in the city" live from the Weld album.
Cinnamon Girl, Hey Hey My My, too many songs to list.
Neil the OG of grunge. I just learned Cinnamon Girl, only Neil can pull off a guitar lead featuring one note.
Always loved his voice and yeah, he's a character all right. He's still alive. Heart of Gold and Old Man are my favorites of his. Jamel, and you make me so happy listening to our memories. Thanks!
Everything Neil Young does comes from his soul.
Neil's still alive and kicking. He's 74 years old and he's married to actress Darryl Hannah.
Whaaaaaat? Crazy Horse married the mermaid?? Upped his already ultra cool status in my book there😀👍
"Bocce Balls!"
That Will Keep you Young :p
Milf! Gilf?
So does Darryl have a heart of gold? Here's hoping
@@yeahbee8237 Filf (fish)
IMO, "Southern Man" is his best and most iconic song.
I very much agree
This song gives me chills everytime. Even as a kid I had to stop what I was doing and listen when my parents played it.
Neil Young is one of the most important singer songwriters of the late 20th Century. He was a member of The Buffalo Springfield, and I'm sure you must have heard "For What It's Worth", even if you didn't know the artists. He was a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, who made one of the greatest Rock albums of all time, "Deja Vu". He has enjoyed a long, prolific solo career, and is still producing fine work to this day. He is one of Canada's greatest gifts to the world. I envy you! There is so much great music out there. I can't even imagine what its like discovering it for the first time. I experience it anew through your reactions. Many thanks! P.S. Yes, we care!
In case you didn't know Neil Young was in a band with Rick James, yes that Rick James, in an R&B/Rock'n'Roll band before they became famous on their own...
Young and James were even roommates at one time.
Now that you've sampled his acoustic stuff, time to take some of his electric stuff in. Powderfinger and Cortez the Killer are two personal faves.
Love Powderfinger!
Upvote...agree
I will add, that my favorite during all of the live performances I've attended, is when he does Like a Hurricane. It's always so haunting and beautiful; gave me chills every time when he did it in a concert.
I love all Neils music, but Cortez the Killer is lowkey his best song.
The Graceful Savage it’s my favorite even if it’s not going to win a popularity contest.
Neil's a character? Oh my, you have no idea.
Daniel Skorich lol that’s funny! Yep!
One of the great characters, really. The realest of music...
@@christopherecatalano They don't get any more real than Neil.😎
Greatness. Yes, definitely an old soul here. Neil Young is forever. Timeless.
