I got to see him live in 1989, little did I know that he would be gone just a few months later. I was just a kid, but I still remember that day for some reason. The only time I ever saw my father cry what when we heard about his wreck on Q102 (Bo and Jim). Later in life, I realized why..
My uncle told me a story about seeing him live and that he literally saw a ray of light shining down on him, like it was his aura. I believe him. But most likely my uncle was tripping on acid at the time. Who knows...
I think he reached so many because he poured is life and heart into every sound he made. He communed with another world and let us hear it. And I was completely rocked by him and by his untimely death. Just when he had been through so much personally, he was taken.
Chris Layton grew up in my hometown of Corpus Christi, Tx. Graduated from Mathis, Tx. I went to school with a younger cousin of his. He was the perfect complement to Stevie and Tommy. Effortlessly kept set the beat for SRV - or rather, kept in perfect beat with SRV.
Beyond words??........Yeah, that about sums it up! Stevie Ray was one of the greatest blues guitar players that ever lived. He was a humble man, yet all the great blues guitarists admired him, and ended up playing with him. BB King, Albert King, Eric Clapton, and so many more that I can't name right now. They were all awestruck by Stevie's amazing ability.
saw him live 4 times, first time was in a bar in Toronto called Albert's Hall in early 80's. Sat 5 feet from him and was hooked for life. club held maybe 75 people. went to see Albert "iceman" Collins and SRV came on for the 2nd set.unbelievable, even after almost 40 years I can still those hands dancing.

King are 2 of the greatest guitarists ever and both play with more soul than 99% of any musician out there. Neither of these 2 have ever played a safe comfort zone maybe you just don't like or understand the blues.
Stevie was straight up nasty. He was never , EVER lost when he played even though he never played the same thing twice. He used super heavy strings to get that tone, but he could still bend them when most Cats couldn't . Go ahead, watch every single bit of footage of him playing, and then tell me when he was off, or took his foot off the gas. You won't find it . And it's not just him, it was his band too. Everybody got it. Everybody knew their job and they were absolute killers.
B.B. King once remarked as to how fluid SRV's playing was, which was something King admitted (rather sheepishly) that he couldn't do that. King was in awe of SRV.

no, the people around stevie didn't realize what they had and let him roam free and make decisions he shouldn't have made and we suffer,all I can think about is the thousands of hours he practiced to become the genius he was,a damn genius,someone should have made the decisions on what copter he rode damn it,i hate helicopters
Bad Luck Eric Clapton’s helicopter actually killed him. Stevie wanted to go and see his girlfriend but his transportation was running behind so Clapton said to go ahead and use his. Shortly thereafter the helicopter crashed into a mountain. One of the most tragic events in the history of modern music. Rip Stevie. He was such a humble guy. I feel bad he’s not able to be apart of the modern era and appearing in videos for Fender, Dunlop etc... where he would demo gear and tell stories about his life. Both him and Hendrix. Somehow we lost the two best blues players of all time.
It wasn't Jimi's Strat that Stevie Ray got from Hendrix...it was his Wa-Wa pedal. The foot pedal to get that effect when he first begins the song and then in different parts throughout. He got his guitar from a music shop in Texas (I think) and he fixed it up. I first learned of him in 1983 and I was blown away. I saw him in Daytona Beach in either 1985 or 1986. I had no idea until then, just how good Vaughan...the GOAT!
It brings my heart great joy to see a young person like yourself react to one of the best ever to pick up a guitar, it gives me hope for the future........Stevie used thicker strings to get that sound which took more strength to press down between the frets which makes it even more iconic.
Hi everyone, having been around for 70 yrs I grew up with all the great guitarists of my time. Also being a guitar player, I appreciate many of the famous guitar players. Many of you just became aware of the brilliance of SRV, Jimi H, Eric Clapton, Richie B, Robin Trower ect. Although SRV is a great blues player he is not the first nor the original. Jimi is!! He wrote that song and his playing is stellar. It's Jimi who changed the music world and how we play guitar. SRV IS A copy no matter how good and I love his re-creation of Hendrix classics. I was also there when he and JH died. I remember the day he died in that helicopter crash with other famous people. Appreciate SRV playing because he is fantastic but he is not the greatest player. No disrespect meant towards anyone. The sound, playing, song is Jimi. All major players are unique and I'm grateful you like the players of my time because many of you are the future of music. Oh, man. Just looking at the looks on you face is so priceless. There is so much about music that transcends race, ethnicity and culture. Some folks just have it. Some don't. But, like I said, it's priceless to when people recognize pure talent. Keep up the good work!
When Pride and joy first hit the radio waves I was a kid. But I played guitar and loved blues. I fell in love with his music. Before hardly anyone even knew him, I saw him live at a place called the famous ballroom in Baltimore. Small joint. He let us kids sit on the edge of the stage for the whole concert. It was utterly amazing.
Greatest guitarist to ever walk the planet. He battled alcohol and drug addiction for most of his life and beat it...then died in a plane crash. Any song of his you choose will be excellent.
I was Blessed to be at his final performances at Alpine Valley, East Troy Wis, with legendary Eric Clapton’ and guitarist extraordinaire Jeff Healey God rest his soul. The most amazing Three days of my life. This man and that show is why I became a fm rock dj. Of all the shows I’ve seen, promoted, or had the privilege of being apart of that last weekend with those three Amazing artists will ALWAYS be my pinnacle in rock n roll history. Rest on peace Stevie

I could tell in the first few seconds that she LOVED the song. BTW, it was the first time I also listened. I'm an old guy who loves ('70's-90's) country music! The SRV performance brought tears to my eyes!
I have just come across some of these "react" videos and I love them. It does an old man good to see young ladies and gentlemen discovering the guitar gods that inspired many of us to play guitar. I love the fact that you even get guitar face when listening, it shows you feel the passion of the music.
The only person I have ever heard who could make Jimi even MORE Jimi. You MUST listen to SRV play Little Wing. If it doesn't move you, nothing will. I was a student at UT Austin the day he passed, and the entire city went into mourning. RIP Stevie. You have been missed.
Insightful, heartfelt and properly respectful response. I grew up in Austin and was watching "Little Stevie Vaughan" play live, long before 'the world' ever heard of him. If there were a 'Mt. Rushmore of Rock,' Stevie Ray would have to be one of the faces on it.

Which completely blew me away because I had only heard recordings at first. Just assumed it was multiple tracks in the studio. Then I saw one of his Austin City Limits performances and I was dumbstruck. WTF? Are you kidding me?!?!
I had a friend that got 2 tickets to see him in Houston at a renovated bank....small, personal venue......OH DEAR GOD!! Seeing, hearing and just experiencing him live was just nuts!! He played with pure passion and intensity......it's like Zen......like he and the guitar are just one......legendary.......P.S. Check out "Skuttle Buttin" if you get a chance!!
I saw him perform live at Saratoga Performing Art Center (SPAC) Jazz Festival. There are no words that can describe his performance. I will never forget him. Check out Texas Flood live. Thank you for your input and doing the research on him.
One of my new favorite things to do on TH-cam is watch first time listeners of SRV Voodoo Child. They pretty much react like I did way back when... I just went into a trance. So awesome!! You would also really enjoy hearing SRV play "Little Sister ".... look for the one where he breaks a string and changes guitars without missing a lick. It's phenomenal
When I ever I listen & watch Stevie Ray play Texas Flood I am reminded of what George Carlin said about playing Blues.... " I'll give you a little tip about the blues, folks: it's not enough to know which notes to play. You need to know why they need to be played."
Yeah, SRV set the bar so high, he's in no danger of being forgotten. The same for Hendrix, of course. But I sometimes wonder why people don't seem to remember the third guitarist who played at this stratospheric skill level: Terry Kath. Hendrix once said, "I'm good, but I'll never be as good as Terry Kath." It irritates me to no end that we lost all three of them well before their time.
I'm late showing up here. The skill that Stevie Ray possessed was amazing. The fact he couldn't read or write music meant he played from the heart and learned his songs strictly through hearing and interpretation. Phenomenal talent.
Another underrated guitarist who is no longer with us is Jeff Healey. He played guitar and he was blind. My suggestion is my wedding song Angel Eyes. But watch it on a live performance.
I loved Jeff Healey. He and Mark Knofpler's version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is stunning! I saw him with my brother in Syracuse way back in the early 90s. He was awesome!
I'd go with See the Light as a far better demonstration of his skill but yeah Jeff was awesome. I wouldn't say he's underrated, though. Those of us who play guitar hold him in high regard.

A definite legend. Saw him live once and he was great. Try listening too Ozzy Osbourne Over The Mountain with the late great Randy Rhoads on guitar. Unfortunately he died without much video record of his playing but he was another legend I was lucky enough to see live.
Saw SRV in Daytona around 1985 and that was the first time I realized he had a keyboard player, Reese Wynans. Also realize that all of the very best guitarists in the world, revered SRV...they knew he was something they were not. I saw Ozzie in 1970 at the Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa (which no longer exists) and he did NOT bite a bat's head off...but Rhoads was exceptional.
I was listening to Jimi Hendrix long before I knew Stevie Ray Vaughn even existed. 99% of the time I like the original version of a song better than any covers, but Stevie totally transformed this into something much greater than the original. There will never be another Stevie.

I like the way you compared SRVs playing to good home cookin'. It _does_ make you feel warm and comfy inside. But it also has the kick in the teeth - POW!! - that makes your jaw drop and leaves you in awe.
This guy was awesome and his music was way ahead of his time. But as a bass player I gotta say that guy really holds the whole song together with magical precision so Stevie can do his thing and let's not forget the drummer staying in the pocket very well and providing rhythm and great beats down to let both Stevie and the bassist shine. I got into a “conversation “ with someone when I said I wished Hendrix had recorded at Motown with The Funk Brothers or Muscle Shoals with The Swampers. Remember- Sky Dog was hanging out at FAME at that time.

I got to see Stevie opening for Jeff Beck not long before he died and I was like "Jeff is gonna come on after this?!" I would have run away with him that night, he was so electrifying and funky. When my friend called me the day it happened he said "Stevie Vai died" and I said "Wait, Steve Vai or Stevie Ray Vaughan?" and he said the second one and I just hung up on him and bawled out loud- still upsets me. Mind you Steve Vai is great too, and gave me the sweetest autograph when I was about to have my first child 29 years ago (!) but my poor Stevie, broke my heart...
Yep I saw him 4 times in the chicago area. In 77 at Chicago fest before anyone even knew him. Saw him with Jeff Beck, them two playing going down was unforgettable especially since it is on youtube and in alpine valley the night he died.
Jimmy Calhoun just because he's an influence, don't at all claim he's any lesser than Hendrix. With his skill, it'd be foolish. Jack Dempsey was Tyson's biggest influence, he knew Ali, but as for style influence it was Dempsey. Knowing that, does that make Tyson less than Jack? No. He forged his style with an influence, but he didn't copy it. Stevie Ray is incredibly distinct, and so is Hendrix. You can very clearly tell them apart.

For a reaction video, 99 percent of the time I want to say always listen to the studio recording if you've never heard the song before so you can hear it as it is supposed to sound and everything's clear. With Stevie Ray Vaughn, his live performances take all of his good studio songs to greater heights. Live performance is always best with him, IMO.

Jimi could really improvise and SRV no matter how good he was always played the same way. I wish people would wake the fuck up. Yes SRV was great but Jimi was from another planet when he was on form.
It was such a treat to watch you being hypnotized by one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived. Really fun to watch someone encountering his lightning bolts for the first time. You might want to check Albert King, cause he modeled much of his sound and attack on the instrument on him. Such a pleasure to see you so moved by a new experience of channeled power from something more than human.
Few could do Jimi Hendrix justice more than SRV. Jimi Hendrix was HUGE, really really HUGE in Texas. SRV, Eric Johnson, Billy Gibbons (ZZ-Top) and Christopher Cross (few people realize he's a spectacular rock/metal lead guitarist) all have a passion for playing Jimi Hendrix and few can play better than they do.
As Little Richard put it so quaintly about James Marshall Hendrix using a quote from Sly Stone about being a star: "All of us are stars some of us just haven't been poured back on the earth yet!" Stevie had been poured back on the earth and we were all fortunate enough to have witnessed it. Someone like Stevie only comes around once every couple of hundred years or so. He was single handedly able to channel Jimi better than anyone ever had or ever will. he took Jimi's style and turned it into an undeniable ART FORM !!!
It was hard to make blues rock sound fresh at that time (and of course since) but SRV did it. His technique was of course impressive but his whole artistic approach is what impresses me most.
You need to react to Stevie ray vaughan's Texas Flood Live at the El Mocambo. Probably the greatest guitar performance ever. Great reaction here tho. SRV!!
@WBoneB- Yup, You are correct, I believe. That was one of his greatest guitar performances/shows at The El Mocambo, that night, I was there. July of 83'. I also saw him play three other times, before the 80's were over. I did not have a chance, to chat with him. I miss him dearly however, I think, the world would be a much better place if he was still here. His soulful talent and ora certainly had a powerful effect on me when I listened/listen to him play and speak. He was an imperfect human being, like everyone else, as he did/would say. But, non the less, a man with great talent, at what he did for a living, and had an ora about him, that I think, was great. But, I also think, like he would/did say about himself, just a human being like everyone else.

Bad Luck Eric Clapton’s helicopter actually killed him. Stevie wanted to go and see his girlfriend but his transportation was running behind so Clapton said to go ahead and use his. Shortly thereafter the helicopter crashed into a mountain. One of the most tragic events in the history of modern music. Rip Stevie. He was such a humble guy. I feel bad he’s not able to be apart of the modern era and appearing in videos for Fender, Dunlop etc... where he would demo gear and tell stories about his life. Both him and Hendrix. Somehow we lost the two best blues players of all time.

It wasn't Jimi's Strat that Stevie Ray got from Hendrix...it was his Wa-Wa pedal. The foot pedal to get that effect when he first begins the song and then in different parts throughout. He got his guitar from a music shop in Texas (I think) and he fixed it up. I first learned of him in 1983 and I was blown away. I saw him in Daytona Beach in either 1985 or 1986. I had no idea until then, just how good Vaughan...the GOAT!
It brings my heart great joy to see a young person like yourself react to one of the best ever to pick up a guitar, it gives me hope for the future........Stevie used thicker strings to get that sound which took more strength to press down between the frets which makes it even more iconic.
Legend doesn't begin to describe this man... probably the greatest guitar player of all time!!

Hi everyone, having been around for 70 yrs I grew up with all the great guitarists of my time. Also being a guitar player, I appreciate many of the famous guitar players. Many of you just became aware of the brilliance of SRV, Jimi H, Eric Clapton, Richie B, Robin Trower ect. Although SRV is a great blues player he is not the first nor the original. Jimi is!! He wrote that song and his playing is stellar. It's Jimi who changed the music world and how we play guitar. SRV IS A copy no matter how good and I love his re-creation of Hendrix classics. I was also there when he and JH died. I remember the day he died in that helicopter crash with other famous people. Appreciate SRV playing because he is fantastic but he is not the greatest player. No disrespect meant towards anyone. The sound, playing, song is Jimi. All major players are unique and I'm grateful you like the players of my time because many of you are the future of music. When Pride and joy first hit the radio waves I was a kid. But I played guitar and loved blues. I fell in love with his music. Before hardly anyone even knew him, I saw him live at a place called the famous ballroom in Baltimore. Small joint. He let us kids sit on the edge of the stage for the whole concert. It was utterly amazing.
Greatest guitarist to ever walk the planet. He battled alcohol and drug addiction for most of his life and beat it...then died in a plane crash. Any song of his you choose will be excellent.

I was Blessed to be at his final performances at Alpine Valley, East Troy Wis, with legendary Eric Clapton’ and guitarist extraordinaire Jeff Healey God rest his soul. The most amazing Three days of my life. This man and that show is why I became a fm rock dj. Of all the shows I’ve seen, promoted, or had the privilege of being apart of that last weekend with those three Amazing artists will ALWAYS be my pinnacle in rock n roll history. Rest on peace Stevie

Saw him live back in '85, third row center, in a venue with about 1200 seats. My Army buddies and I were blown away!
I have just come across some of these "react" videos and I love them. It does an old man good to see young ladies and gentlemen discovering the guitar gods that inspired many of us to play guitar. I love the fact that you even get guitar face when listening, it shows you feel the passion of the music.

The only person I have ever heard who could make Jimi even MORE Jimi. You MUST listen to SRV play Little Wing. If it doesn't move you, nothing will. I was a student at UT Austin the day he passed, and the entire city went into mourning. RIP Stevie. You have been missed.
Insightful, heartfelt and properly respectful response. I grew up in Austin and was watching "Little Stevie Vaughan" play live, long before 'the world' ever heard of him. If there were a 'Mt. Rushmore of Rock,' Stevie Ray would have to be one of the faces on it.

I had a friend that got 2 tickets to see him in Houston at a renovated bank....small, personal venue......OH DEAR GOD!! Seeing, hearing and just experiencing him live was just nuts!! He played with pure passion and intensity......it's like Zen......like he and the guitar are just one......legendary.......P.S. Check out "Skuttle Buttin" if you get a chance!!
I saw him perform live at Saratoga Performing Art Center (SPAC) Jazz Festival. There are no words that can describe his performance. I will never forget him. Check out Texas Flood live. Thank you for your input and doing the research on him.

Yeah, SRV set the bar so high, he's in no danger of being forgotten. The same for Hendrix, of course. But I sometimes wonder why people don't seem to remember the third guitarist who played at this stratospheric skill level: Terry Kath. Hendrix once said, "I'm good, but I'll never be as good as Terry Kath."
It irritates me to no end that we lost all three of them well before their time.

I'm late showing up here. The skill that Stevie Ray possessed was amazing. The fact he couldn't read or write music meant he played from the heart and learned his songs strictly through hearing and interpretation. Phenomenal talent.

Another underrated guitarist who is no longer with us is Jeff Healey. He played guitar and he was blind. My suggestion is my wedding song Angel Eyes. But watch it on a live performance.
I loved Jeff Healey. He and Mark Knofpler's version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is stunning! I saw him with my brother in Syracuse way back in the early 90s. He was awesome!
I'd go with See the Light as a far better demonstration of his skill but yeah Jeff was awesome. I wouldn't say he's underrated, though. Those of us who play guitar hold him in high regard.

A definite legend. Saw him live once and he was great. Try listening too Ozzy Osbourne Over The Mountain with the late great Randy Rhoads on guitar. Unfortunately he died without much video record of his playing but he was another legend I was lucky enough to see live.
Saw SRV in Daytona around 1985 and that was the first time I realized he had a keyboard player, Reese Wynans. Also realize that all of the very best guitarists in the world, revered SRV...they knew he was something they were not. I saw Ozzie in 1970 at the Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa (which no longer exists) and he did NOT bite a bat's head off...but Rhoads was exceptional.

I was listening to Jimi Hendrix long before I knew Stevie Ray Vaughn even existed. 99% of the time I like the original version of a song better than any covers, but Stevie totally transformed this into something much greater than the original. There will never be another Stevie.

Is the guy that made the light bulb last longer or have different wattages the greatest or is Thomas Edison the greatest for inventing the bulb to begin with? Jimmy invented this style of music as well as this song. IMO jimmy is the greatest which doesn’t take from SRV being great.

I like the way you compared SRVs playing to good home cookin'. It _does_ make you feel warm and comfy inside. But it also has the kick in the teeth - POW!! - that makes your jaw drop and leaves you in awe.
This guy was awesome and his music was way ahead of his time. But as a bass player I gotta say that guy really holds the whole song together with magical precision so Stevie can do his thing and let's not forget the drummer staying in the pocket very well and providing rhythm and great beats down to let both Stevie and the bassist shine. I got into a “conversation “ with someone when I said I wished Hendrix had recorded at Motown with The Funk Brothers or Muscle Shoals with The Swampers. Remember- Sky Dog was hanging out at FAME at that time.

I got to see Stevie opening for Jeff Beck not long before he died and I was like "Jeff is gonna come on after this?!" I would have run away with him that night, he was so electrifying and funky. When my friend called me the day it happened he said "Stevie Vai died" and I said "Wait, Steve Vai or Stevie Ray Vaughan?" and he said the second one and I just hung up on him and bawled out loud- still upsets me. Mind you Steve Vai is great too, and gave me the sweetest autograph when I was about to have my first child 29 years ago (!) but my poor Stevie, broke my heart...

Yep I saw him 4 times in the chicago area. In 77 at Chicago fest before anyone even knew him. Saw him with Jeff Beck, them two playing going down was unforgettable especially since it is on youtube and in alpine valley the night he died.

Jimmy Calhoun just because he's an influence, don't at all claim he's any lesser than Hendrix. With his skill, it'd be foolish.
Jack Dempsey was Tyson's biggest influence, he knew Ali, but as for style influence it was Dempsey. Knowing that, does that make Tyson less than Jack? No. He forged his style with an influence, but he didn't copy it. Stevie Ray is incredibly distinct, and so is Hendrix. You can very clearly tell them apart.

For a reaction video, 99 percent of the time I want to say always listen to the studio recording if you've never heard the song before so you can hear it as it is supposed to sound and everything's clear. With Stevie Ray Vaughn, his live performances take all of his good studio songs to greater heights. Live performance is always best with him, IMO.
Another taken before his time, he's jamming with Jimi and Dime in heaven. When you look into the camera with that OMG expression, seeing you get that look always makes me smile. 😀 Love and light your way Pink.

It was such a treat to watch you being hypnotized by one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived. Really fun to watch someone encountering his lightning bolts for the first time. You might want to check Albert King, cause he modeled much of his sound and attack on the instrument on him. Such a pleasure to see you so moved by a new experience of channeled power from something more than human.
Few could do Jimi Hendrix justice more than SRV. Jimi Hendrix was HUGE, really really HUGE in Texas. SRV, Eric Johnson, Billy Gibbons (ZZ-Top) and Christopher Cross (few people realize he's a spectacular rock/metal lead guitarist) all have a passion for playing Jimi Hendrix and few can play better than they do.

As Little Richard put it so quaintly about James Marshall Hendrix using a quote from Sly Stone about being a star: "All of us are stars some of us just haven't been poured back on the earth yet!" Stevie had been poured back on the earth and we were all fortunate enough to have witnessed it. Someone like Stevie only comes around once every couple of hundred years or so. He was single handedly able to channel Jimi better than anyone ever had or ever will. he took Jimi's style and turned it into an undeniable ART FORM !!!

@WBoneB- Yup, You are correct, I believe. That was one of his greatest guitar performances/shows at The El Mocambo, that night, I was there. July of 83'. I also saw him play three other times, before the 80's were over. I did not have a chance, to chat with him. I miss him dearly however, I think, the world would be a much better place if he was still here. His soulful talent and ora certainly had a powerful effect on me when I listened/listen to him play and speak. He was an imperfect human being, like everyone else, as he did/would say. But, non the less, a man with great talent, at what he did for a living, and had an ora about him, that I think, was great. But, I also think, like he would/did say about himself, just a human being like everyone else.
