How to Roleplay in SWTOR
Roleplaying is a way of creating an interactive story where you and others player can create your own narratives. Although you'll never see a quest, mission, or reward ingame for roleplay, it's an activity that many MMO and SWTOR players enjoy and sometimes even base their gameplay around.
Roleplay allows you to create and explore your character in ways that the game doesn't quite provide. Roleplaying is a way to "act" as your character with others, as if you were in a play or a drama - and since it s all created by players like you, it doesn't have to follow the strict guidelines of the game.
For example - you could roleplay as an Imperial Trooper - a class that SWTOR doesn't actually provide as a class choice in the game. Or you could roleplay as a merchant, a droid mechanic, or of course, any of the classes that actually exist like a Jedi or a Sith. You can also roleplay outside of the class storylines - if you are roleplaying a Trooper, you don't have to be a member of Havoc Squad. If you're a Jedi - you don't have to follow the exact storyline's path of the Jedi Knight or Jedi Consular. If you're an inquisitor, you don't have to be a slave - if you're an agent - you don't even have to be a member of the SiS - maybe you you'd rather work for an independant organization instead.
Before you start roleplaying, it's smart to make at least a simple biography of your character. This will help you share your character with others, and give you a guideline in how they might react in certain situations. A biography can be as short or as long as you'd like it, but usually includes these things...
A visual description. What color is their hair? Their eyes? What do they like to wear? This doesn't have to match up perfectly with what your character is like ingame, but it's usually smart to keep them similar.
For example, if you are dressed like a Jedi ingame, people will assume you're a Jedi - so if you want to portray your character as a civilian, you might want to ditch the robes and the saber while roleplaying.
You might also want to explore your character's background and current occupation in your biography. Did they come from Alderaanian nobility? Did they attend the Sith Academy on Korriban, but got kicked out? Did they grow up in the seedy underbelly of Nar Shaddaa? It's also good to pick them out a profession and decide where they sit in that role - if you're a Jedi, decide if you are a Padawan, a Knight or a Master and lookup exactly what those ranks mean, first. If you're a bounty hunter, are you a novice, fresh out the space port with no kills under your belt, or are you a seasoned veteran who's gotten so many Hutt Contracts they've lost count?
A biography also details a bit of your character's personality. Are they impulsive, or calm? Do they get angry easily? Are they friendly, cruel, shy, or outgoing? A good way to help you decide what your character might be like, is to ask yourself hypothetical questions. What would my character do if a gunfight broke out in the cantina they were in? If offered credits of a dirty job, would they take it, or leave it? If Emperor Valkorian offered them eveyrthing if they would only kneel, would they?

I usually like to dress all my Jedi or Sith on civilian or military clothes, only used my Jedi & Sith clothes on some official meeting and all are neutral neither light or dark. As for rank in guilds. I don't like officers ranks, I consider myself a freelancer or a Grunt. hehehehe I enjoy your videos keep up the good work.
Swtorista i loved it but sometimes roleplaying people use the fact that their friends with a guild leader to kick you or make it so that your character is carbon frozen or in force stasis and when you leave they still try force their role play on you

My idea for an RP Smuggler is that he was supposed to become a member of Havoc Squad, but was wounded and given a Honorable Discharge, instead. His family, who own a shipping company, set him up with a ship, dealing with some of their shadier clients.
That's a cool start to a backstory!
I always try to be open-minded with backstoried, but please, try not to involve, main characters, or lore characters, because you could very easily accidentally say something that's very, very, very different in the game. It's also a sure way to make yourself seem better than everyone else.

I love roleplaying. I always create backgrounds for my characters and I enjoy it a lot. For example I am now planning when I get a subscription to roleplay a jedi consular as chancellor Saresh's daughter
That'll be an interesting one! I can't imagine what a daughter of Saresh would be like... poor girl would either be a major rebel or follow right in line with mum.
Swtorista Exactly and I got that idea for the jedi consular exactly because her mother is a politician so she has to be good at something that has to do with politics for example diplomecy

As the one person that so long ago [damn this was long ago, you know this feeling when you wonder what those gaming-buddies of old are doing now? Ahh, nostalgia, what a feeling, back to topic:] brought me into rp this introduction was given to me:

I recently discovered RP in SWTOR.. It's quite a lot of fun, writing and being creative. A good break from raids and missions for me, hehe. My best friend who introduced me to SWTOR enjoys a bit of RP as well, so we've created backstories for our characters and enjoy creating ideas/scenarios that we RP in-game. Also being part of a guild is great. We're not a heavy RP guild, but we do hold some fun RP events, including action RP (which is RP mixed with heroics), fashion show, etc.
My character's a Sith Inquisitor apprentice who is a complete sociopath and he doesn't care about the Empire or the Republic as long he get to kill things, not to prove his strength but for amusement.

I have just discovered your channel here Swtorista and I am really enjoying your videos. I have played for years and I have built up a back story combining all 16 Toons that I am currently running. That is a "One of Each" approach - I have a Toon for playing every class. All of them over lvl 50 now and many of them at least lvl 60. (And I only started one at lvl 65 in the Eternal Throne Expansion.) So my real comment here is that I've been "Role Playing" with my Toons from the beginning, creating their back stories as I went, and combining their talents into a single "Agency" working together across the Republic and Empire realms. Yes, I mostly play as a Lone Wolf, and always play PVE, I don't usually like to interact with others - it takes me out of my game. My entire "Role Play" is in my own head - creating my own Star Wars Universe "Movies" as it were. But I am learning here that I may want to expand my universe a little to include others. (I have some outfits that I want to share in the 'Fashion Shows' you host - that looks fun.) I'm like Grogu; I may have some great powers - but I'm still just a Noob - and learning how to interact with the Universe around me.

I started MMOs with Guild Wars Factions almost 12 years ago and since that time, I always created the background story of a character in every MMO ever since, before I let them loose on the(ir) Universe.
Made good stuff for almost 300 short Fanfiction stories.
This needs to be taught in schools so people know how to RP their IRL toons. There are so many IRL toons RPing as MarrySue's. =P
I remember the massive roleplay community before the game was released way back in like 2010, all had our own websites and chat boxes and identities. Miss those days.

I've RPd for years in ESO and GW2. I am really excited to try out some SWTOR RP. I plan on making my RP characters and using them to achieve Legendary player status one by one while focusing on my main in gameplay and RP. I love lore-heavy settings for it like SWTOR. I'll have to play some before I jump into it, I'm sure, to understand all the planets and references everyone is making. But I am very excited to try! RP lasted me 2.5 years in ESO. 1 year in GW2. I think SWTOR would be another game where I can really extend my experience by RPing a lot!
Really love this video, you tackled all the things a new Rper should now, for me its mainly Lore, godmodding/powergameing and the rolling/freeform style of fighting. A video idea you might like is explaining a Rp guild a bit more, and that a lot of event nights will be DnD style Rps, with one person leading everyones group and then be using the roll system or logic system to play out a larger story with everyone involved. As well as some more basic rules and some easy lore, like how the f-word is changed to kriff, and the not so nice word for poop changed to Poo-doo (even if people don't really use that one) Also maybe just really fast mention the difference between erp and rp, because someone not knowing might accidently get involved in the former without knowing, or even wanting it. But really besides that, amazing video! And while everyone is being weird about your voice I would rather comment on how you set everything up and how smooth everything feels, as well as your editing. It's great, and I wouldn't think twice if someone told me these videos are made by Bioware!

There is a part in the imperial agent storyline when you either join or fight Darth Jadus... If you join him it is kinda a diffirent organisation...
I find the Legacy system works well for roleplaying and having relations that don't interfere with the established canon. On one server, my Zabrak Sorcerer is the sister of my Trooper, and the mother of my Zabrak Consular, who shares a Force Bond with her and is aware that she is descended from the Sith Lord Kallig, taking a name that means "Light From Darkness", while the Trooper despises the Empire that took her sister. On my other server, my Knight is the son of the Smuggler, who consequently has a decent respect for the Order.
If this game had chat bubbles it would be the only MMO I would play.

When killing another players character, use OOC chatting (i use parentheses) and ask something like "PTK?" Permission To Kill -edit, i was around half through video when i said this, lol, also, keep up the good work SWTORista
Good tip! A new player might not know what PTK stands for, but in general, ask before murdering a story character someone my have spent years enjoying :P

Most of the community play RP in private in their own StrongHold or with their Guild. ( other possibilities are ERP or Cantina RP). And that's soo boring. Under the respect of the RP rules, we should create Star Wars story RP between the Empire and the Republic.. We have a huge galaxy for that, not only cantinas or SH.

Oh I don't ask this for every guilds but at least some guilds could do that. I've been playing on EU Progenitor and NA Ebon Hawk and I asked if anyone tried this. No one did and It appeared no one want to do that because they 're afraid about rules breakers. I would love to play a great and dynamic RP in a star wars game... seriously I stopped because I was terribly bored with that community..
My charactor is a by the books Trooper and he likes to fight often even though he is not the best at it.
I made a very funny looking Togruta Trooper - but I play him as a 'By-the-Books' Serious Trooper. It's an awesome Toon! Fun to play.

I like "walking" my Toons through the Space Station - it really freaks people out.
My character is a Mary Sue and I’m fine with that there are reason he is, and it’s not because he’s powerful, because he’s not, it’s because he’s a race that I created myself that kinda makes him live through all the major events of Star Wars, he’s kinda like the avatar of the Star Wars verse
I am not a roleplayer but at some time i played in an RP/PVP server and that was the most amount of fun i have ever had in the game, RP adds a lot of depth to the game and the best thing is that you won't see silly names or silly actions by other players, for me i roleplayed as a imperial guard to a sith lord :D
I personally roleplay through Voice Chat. It is much easier on your fingers, and might get you to acting school.

@@Eyeshield11721 except for the face that Luke and Anakin both underwent serious training. Anakin was trained for a decade before the clone wars and yeah he was good but he had to work for it. Luke trained too weathered it was flying in his t-16 back home, the lightsaber remoste with obi won or the months he spent on degobah. Rey on the other had spends her life on jakku as a scavenger and suddenly she's able to fly the falcon better than if not the same as han solo. The first time she turns on a lightsaber she trounces kylo Ren someone who's had years of training from Luke and smoke not only with a lightsaber but also the force. So yes there's a difference between Luke and Anakin as opposed to rey

My sith Inquisitor, Ilara Argus-Thul, was born a Thul noble. She was born with a birth defect where her eyes don't open. Her parents smand most around her assume she's a miraluka. When my bounty hunter worked for Ilara's parents, ilara was given to my bounty hunter as a baby. My bounty hunter is a togruta and created clan Argus. Ilara was later discovered as a force snesitive when my bounty hunter worked for a sith. Then the sith inquisitor class starts after she was trained well enough.

The one problem I have with RP'ing is "god modeing" cause say your getting shot at or something along those lines, you don't get the choice if your character dies or gets injured

I've got the feeling that I'm the only player on my entire server that even tries to do a bit of roll-playing. I'm on T3-M4 and until now I have not seen anyonw role-playing :(
I usually suggest people who to roleplay to look for a group. Many players are shy to RP in the open. On my server Ebon Hawk I see people RPing on the fleet all the time though.
I looked up the forum of my server and it seems like that RP is dead on mine. One guy even said that on almost all servers no RP anymore is. I don't really want to transfer my Character , so maybe I make a new discussion or create my own RP Guild
Progenitor and Ebon Hawk is good choice for RP, you will see recruiting a lot in general chat for guilds

I think you can but I'm not 100% sure. You can download play the game free, then try out your Visa card.
My Advanced glass in game is a sith sorcerer, but when I RP she seems more like a Sith Assassin and acts more physical. Someone brought this up and I started thinking about it. I know it's just game mechanics but now that I think about it it kind of bothers me, any advice?

You really want to be using the correct weapon for your advanced class. Otherwise some abilities become unavailable to you

I'm curious what role playing practically ends up looking like in server? Do you still play through quests or missions? Or is it mostly just roaming around constructing your own thing while ignoring the established content?
It seems to really depend on the person. Some people are 100% roleplay-only, usually after playing the game "normally" for a bit. Others do it inbetween other group content. When I was roleplaying a lot and there was less content in the game (3ish years ago), we basically roleplayed anytime we weren't doing operations since we'd already done all the quests in the game at least once :) Usually it's the "roaming around" part, very few groups roleplay existing content (for example, going into a flashpoint and roleplaying it as you go) just because it gets kinda difficult to factor in things like boss fights or typing while fighting haha.

There is a vendot of the fleet (republic) that sells imperial trooper armor. But it requires a specific type of reputation to purchase. How do I earn this kind of rep??
Is that the one up the tall elevator? If so you need to have the collector's edition of the game. I don't even have that.

the music choice was good. Nice. I would be shocked to actually find someone who role plays a novice or weaker person. But hey if someone actually wants to role play in this lets do it.
It can be really interesting to play as a character with a weakness. Playing as a novice.. a padawan, or an unseasoned trooper, let' you ask questions and create discussions that would never happen between two veterans. And weaknesses can be interesting to overcome too - one of my characters is mute!
+Swtorista I play a very patriotic imperial. He is very obedient and always shows respect to his higher ups. He isn't weak to say but he is no Sith Lord or anything! He actually trying to find a master! In my little experience it's always good to have some one not always saying there the best. Builds up a relationships and expands the story. But I am just a novice to to :p

My favourite kind of RP is the padawan/apprentice time. Its really fun, imo.

I always though MMO role playing, especially in an RP server, the RP would be constantly on and everyone would pretend that they were at least in the universe, like the way characters act when TV shows do an mmorpg parody.
I roleplay as my own throughout the story of my class character with my travel experiences buddies / companions. P. S. I need to figure out how to send my chat message out; I haven't figure out that yet on an AZERTY keyboard! 😩

+Elfandspartan Google's Blogger platform is very nice (and free), you have some customization options, can run your own domain name, and so forth. Very extendable if you code a little bit. And no security issues as with Wordpress.

This instantly gave me the idea to open a guild with my bf and my friend to try to become a contract company or something. Players can come do tasks for us and then get paid for it, and eventually they can buy things from us at a better price than the player market or the ingame market

i like to think of my sorcerer as like an evil egomaniac. i.e. i try to say stuff like "Kneel before the Great (name)" its fun, annoys the hell out of people but i do it anyway

I used to RP for years in Second Life within the star wars sims. I was thinking of going back into it , however i have no idea where i might find the best role play . Wether it's SL or Swtor.
Hey! SL is more built for roleplay, while SWTOR has more limitations since it is not as open world. I would say if you want Star Wars roleplay, definitely hop into SWTOR. If you want more variation, hop into SL and see how it is doing.

I like to Play a Bit op in roleplay (if i happen to be the only Enemy of many) to give them a Challenge and to make them Think about a Way to outplay My character
