Song was written by her as a melancholy ode for her original lead guitarist james honeyman-scott who had died in 1982 from an overdose at just 25. He's gone 2000 miles and she misses him. I find it haunting and a beautiful tribute. UK hit Dec 83. But an annual festive favourite.
@Tessmage_Tessera Agreed. Think she missed him for a very long time too. He was a unique talent who loved his music. It was a shock to her when he died, so unexpected
Melancholy is a good way to describe this song as it was inspired by the death of former Pretenders band member, guitarist James Honeyman-Scott in 1982.
This is off the excellent album “Learning To Crawl” - which had great songs such as “Middle of the Road”, “Back on the Chain Gang”, “My City Was Gone”, and “Show Me.”
Christmas is a lonely and sad time for many...the festivities focused on families and friends are a hard reminder for those of us who aren't able, for whatever reason, to join in. I think this song evokes that perfectly. One of the saddest Christmas songs ever, and which is often sung completely out of context, is I'll Be Home For Christmas...from the perspective of someone who can only dream of being home. also, the Pretenders are one of the essential 70's and 80's rockers, truly ground breaking, and who captured the human experience completely...try Watching The Clothes
This is definitely on my Christmas playlist. I love Chrissie Hynde's voice, and her lyrics are always much deeper than they initially sound. But I can see where you're coming from if you're not familiar with the Pretenders you probably will have a hard time getting into a song like this. She wrote a few songs about her friend, lover, bandmate James Honeyman-Scott having more or less killed himself with an overdose in '82, but this one is particularly haunting. The scattered emptiness of the verses echoes her loneliness and inability to express missing him at Christmas.
Chrissie Hynde is a rock n roll icon. The thing you have to know about her is that she is not a warm and fuzzy gal. She can write songs about love but they are never cliche or sentimental. They are often, raw and edgy. She came out of the original punk movement in England and she has done and seen some $#&@. Having said that, she put together an amazing band with a very unique sound. The first two albums with the original members were epic. I remember being in high school and being blown away. Being a singer myself, I was thrilled to see a woman leading a rock band and doing it amazingly. Chrissie has always been my rock n roll hero. I think if you listen to songs like Message Of Love, Mystery Achievement, Talk Of The Town, Middle Of The Road, and Show Me, you’ll really dig the music more. Merry Christmas!🎄
@reneeinla2.0 cool, almost exactly the tunes I'd pick. Saw them twice, 1980 at Heatwave north of Toronto and 1982 at a venue called the Cow Palace; Chrissie was chuffed to be the first rock act to play there since Jimi Hendrix. I'd been up for 3 days drinking coffee and writing, missed my friends who opened the show and the beginning of the Pretenders' set, happily not my faves, like 'Message of Love', their newest hit at the time. The OG lineup, none better, imo. Rest In Peace, James and Pete. 💔🥲❤️✨️🕊
Merry Christmas Jay & Amber, when I was younger I went to their concert in Milwaukee and climbed the PA speakers stack and she threw me her sweat towel
Wow, thought you'd love this. It's beautiful. If you were a punkish new wave kid back in the day... this brought you back into the holiday spirit. Still one of my favorites. Maybe it's meant for those of us who tend to feel sad this time of year. I'd also recommend The Ravonettes "Christmas Song" for slow/pretty yet oh so hip Christmas music.
I thought they would dig it too as this is one of my favorite Pretenders song. The melody is very fine. Some people get thrown by three chords just repeating over & over which they do here. Almost drone-like. It's just a great tune to me.
Omg, you have soooo missed the mark on The Pretenders. Chrissie Hynde is such an iconic rock legend. Please review "Mystery achievement", "Kid", "Brass in pocket", "Message of love", "Back on the chain gang", "Precious", "Talk of the town"... so many great songs.
I agree with all of your suggestions. Ms. Hynde is among my favorite female singers. This, to me, is not a Christmas song. And it's not my favorite of hers...yet it's still good. And that says a lot. Mystery Achievement and Middle of the Road are at the top of my Pretenders list. ❤
If you haven't heard lots of Pretenders that is one thing you should definitely fix in 2024!! Chrissy Hynde is a fabulous vocalist and the group is great! This is one of my favourite Christmas songs. You should also try "A Spaceman Came Traveling" by Chris De Burgh.
Hey, I get why you picked this, being a Christmas song and all. But it seems like you tend to pick the slower Pretenders songs only. They have some hard rocking songs!- particularly on their first two albums! I have suggested this before, but for hard rocking Pretenders, you really need to consider reacting to the official video of "Tattooed Love Boys." You will both love it, but Jay in particular will appreciate it! After that, Precious is another hard rocker. Until you check out some of their hard rocking songs, you really don't have a grasp of them as a band. Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates it!
They picked three British Christmas songs and they've reacted to these artists several times. Meanwhile, black female artists with No. 1, hits get zero reactions. I'd take a slow Sarah Vaughan or Toni Braxton or any song from these artists. Not one reaction. Love Chrissy, though.
They primarily react to songs they are unfamiliar with. Maybe they know the likes of Toni Braxton well and wouldn't be able to a fresh take on their music.
You are quite incorrect about that. They have reacted to Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Betty Wright, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, The Supremes, Diana Ross (solo), En Vogue, The Shirelles, Donna Summer and Chaka Khan to name a few. @@blackblake3658
This is an essential GenX Christmas song. Dark, moody & melancholy are perfect adjectives to describe this song & my generation. Not everything about Christmas is "merry & bright." Love this song to pieces.
You must check out their awesome rocker Middle of the Road. And their poignant Back on the Chain Gang. About her relationship that ended. If you watch a live version you may see her get choked up singing it.
Thanks guys. This is one of my favorite Christmas songs. In fact, I listen to it several times throughout the year, not just this time of the year. And I would love if you include more from the Pretenders Happy Hollodays!
Chrissie Hynde can NEVER do any wrong in my mind! Agreed, perhaps not one of their best, but still a REALLY good one! "Talk of The Town" probably my all-time favorite Pretenders tune! Edit: One quick Christmas tune suggestion I'd have for you guys would be "Indiana Christmas" by Straight No Chaser.
Hi, you two! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here. There are so many more classic Christmas songs that come back out year after year over here in the UK. The most famous is probably Slade with 'Merry Xmas Everybody', but there are so many more you need to hear. Like Wizard with 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday'. I think you would also love Shakin' Stevens and he has a Christmas song too, called 'Merry Christmas Everyone'. A similar title to the Slade song, but very different. Æx 🙏
This is my favourite Christmas Song. The melancholy tone coupled with the fact it's about James Honeyman-Scott (who passed away), is a reminder to be thankful for those that are still with us at Christmas.
This song is about someone far away.....kind of. It's basically written to/for a former band member who passed away. Hope this brings clarity . Merry Christmas! BTW -This is one of my favorites - the more the listen to it the more you'll like it.
My son moved from New Jersey to Oklahoma about 10 years ago. Every Christmas I send him this video - it's become a tradition. I'm only a couple of years younger than Chrissie Hynde, and my goal is still to be like Chrissie Hynde!
Very nice you did this song right after Father Christmas of The KinKs. Chrissy Hynde was in this time she wrote this song in a relationship with Ray Davies, lead-singer of The KinKs. Though he was far away in Australia performing with The KinKs around the time she wrote this song, the song is not about missing him. It is a tribute to guitarist and founding band member James Honeyman-Scott, who died of a drug overdose in 1982 at the age of 25.
Talking of tricky and slightly depressing but brilliant Christmas songs, Greg Lake - "I Believe In Father Christmas" is your thing. The title is deceiving...
I always liked this song. It is a festive favourite here in the UK... I always hear it on the radio or in the supermarket. It's nice to have a more thoughtful, melancholy song to balance out all the holly jolly songs. I love Wham's 'Last Cristmas' or Darlene Love's 'Baby, please come home' for the same reason.
The Pretenders with Chrissie Hynde !! ICONIC. She always brings it and there is no one else that sounds like them. Have you heard OHIO.....I would think with your location you would start with that one!
The Pretenders are a great rock band - listen to "Back on thte Chain Gang" "My City is Gone" "Middle of the Road". This is not typical of them - Chrissie Hynde is a very influential singer.
As an Uber driver, I gave a couple members of The Pretenders a ride a few years back. I told them that I used to play in cover bands and that we had done, "Middle Of The Road" which I said was fun to play. The guitarist replied, "It still is". That is one song that I think both of you will really like.
Christmas isnt always happy jolly no matter what the commercials and hallmark movies try to tell you..sometimes we arent with people we love ,sometimes they arent with us anymore..there is room for a more melancholy tunes for Christmas..
Agreed. They had some great songs throughout but i think their debut album (as a complete album) was their strongest compilation. It had a lot of "bangers".
Chrisse Hynde is one of the greatest to ever front a band. Jay would love her rockers like Precious, Up the Neck, The Wait, Middle of the Road, The Adultress and many more.
I love this song but had never seen the video, had only heard the song on the radio back in the eighties. I think if you hadn't seen the video, you wouldn't think this song was weird at all. Videos can be really distracting and unfortunately can overwhelm a listener's experience of a song. This is a beautiful song that I don't even really think of as a Christmas song, even though it has the word Christmas in it. I just love that Byrds-ian guitar sound.
I just commented the same, that was one of the ropiest videos I've seen in a long time, you could barely see the budget it was so small, and I think that's why we never saw it at the time (plus it was released at Christmas to lots of competition) It didn't look like a Godley/Creme video to me, they should have gone to the best...
Next Christmas you should check out a few songs by The Brian Setzer Orchestra, B.B. King, The Carpenters, and Dean Martin. All are among my favorite Christamas albums. Setzer has 3 Christmas albums to choose from. I do wish you would do more Pretenders. I feel like you've barely scratched the surface. Their first 2 albums are phenomenal.
Listen to their rock/punk stuff...it's jet fueled! Try: Cuban Slide Back on the Chain Gang Message of Love Time the Avenger (my personal fav) Up the Neck Any of the above will blow your back!!
What I love about this tune is the gorgeous 12-string guitar hook. It’s supposed to sound like church bells ringing out on Christmas and by God it does. As for the downer lyrics? Sooner or later everyone will have a downer Christmas, due to personal troubles, trouble with the family, whatever. Matter of fact holiday depression is a well-known phenomenon. The lyrics tell us “Don’t worry. This will pass and things WILL get better.” It’s a message a lot of people need to hear about this time of year. God bless the Pretenders.
From my favorite Pretenders album (Learning To Crawl), 1984, last song on side Two. You really need to hit their BEST Song, also found on this album side Two, called MY CITY WAS GONE with a bass line that just doesn't quit. It's from a true story when she went home for an unannounced visit and got a 'gut punch', even her family moved and didn't tell her. Most people can't remember the title, so it never gets requested!
maybe it's me but i love these more melancholy christmas songs. this pretenders song falls more in the vein of another favourite of mine, "merry christmas darling" by the carpenters. these both express yearning for their love who is far away for the holidays and are both gorgeous. i still cry when i hear them, probably always will ❤
Thank you so much for this one, I loved hearing it with you both. I honestly hope there is a chance you could JUST ONE MORE before the year is out... Greg Lake's I Believe In Father Christmas. It's perfect for that in-between time between Christmas and the new year. PLEEEEASE. Any help to upvote this :)
This song was about her guitarist and close James Honeyman Scott who had recently passed away from a drug overdose. The band had incredible tragedy early on.
Chrissie Hynde is the first lady of female front women rockers! The OG! This is a sad Christmas song... which is something you guy's weren't ready for or expecting. There are others in this modern alt type genre of Christmas music by contemporary artists. It's a great song! It's moody, but not everyone is happy around the holidays. This is for people missing someone they wish they could be with.
The Christmas blend of melancholy and joyfulness. This time of year isn't just for those still with us, but a moment of remembrance for those passed. 2000 Miles is the perfect encapsulation of all the mixed emotions this season stirs in us all.
Had you ever listened to Luther Vandross' song " Every Year Every Christmas " it is a somewhat sad Christmas song too, but it is one of my favorites. Not all Christmas songs are jolly, and I like that because Christmas is not a happy time for everyone.
I love this song and can understand ya'lls apprehension about it but you have to remember it's not really different to us as we've heard it for years. 😊
Saw Chrissie Hynde at the Apollo Glasgow . The Kinks were playing and Ray Davies , brought her out on stage , his girlfriend ! The whole audience erupted !! What a great night ❤

This is a modern Christmas classic. It's been covered by multiple artists over the years. I think it's a beautiful song.

Chrisy Hines and the Pretenders were Major players on the music scene in the 80s. A hit machine.
I think Johnny Marr played guitar on this. i thought i heard that some time ago, but i couldn’t be wrong. if you don’t know he played for THE SMITHS
maybe it's me but i love these more melancholy christmas songs. this pretenders song falls more in the vein of another favourite of mine, "merry christmas darling" by the carpenters. these both express yearning for their love who is far away for the holidays and are both gorgeous. i still cry when i hear them, probably always will ❤
Merry Christmas Darling always gets me too!
I'm a big fan of the Pretenders, and I really love this Christmas song..one of my rock favorites of the season. Merry Christmas Rob & Amber!
December will be magic again by Kate Bush...It’s different 😅as you can imagine but brilliant and very beautiful
Un très joyeux Noël de France 🇫🇷 (Marseille) 🤶🎄🎁🍾😊🤗👌
This is for people missing someone they wish they could be with.
ne of with Anne Wilson and Grace Slick
@@KymPridham Neither of whom is the songwriter that Chrissie is imo.
@@MsAppassionata Now that is comedy
@@KymPridham Maybe to you it is, but neither Anne Wilson nor Grace Slick has written as many great songs as Chrissie.
@@MsAppassionata I love Chrissy but u r wrong go do some research
The Christmas blend of melancholy and joyfulness. This time of year isn't just for those still with us, but a moment of remembrance for those passed. 2000 Miles is the perfect encapsulation of all the mixed emotions this season stirs in us all.
My number one favorite Christmas song!
" Brass in Pocket "
Had you ever listened to Luther Vandross' song
" Every Year Every Christmas "
it is a somewhat sad Christmas song too, but it is one of my favorites.
Not all Christmas songs are jolly, and I like that because Christmas is not
a happy time for everyone.
I love this song and can understand ya'lls apprehension about it but you have to remember it's not really different to us as we've heard it for years. 😊
OOH! OOH! Check out "Time the Avenger"..."Message of Love"..."Watching the Clothes Go Round"...and "Tatoo'ed Love Boys"! (all are BANGERS)
Saw Chrissie Hynde at the Apollo Glasgow . The Kinks were playing and Ray Davies , brought her out on stage , his girlfriend ! The whole audience erupted !! What a great night ❤
"Back on the Chain Gang" Chrissy's sultry voice drives me nuts
Always loved this one.
❤️❤️❤️
