I worked at sea and missed many Christmas at home, so I could have summer off. I always identified with the loss, pain and joy in this song all at the same time. Christmas, in a word. The song is deeply personal for Ms. Hynde and Mr. Chambers. Thank you for a touching summery. But it's also about Santa Claus who is ALWAYS gone from home on Christmas and has to travel a long way to get back home. I've never heard a song so sympathetic to the work Santa Claus has to get through delivering his goods. As a professional merchant seafarer, I identified with that, and this song on many levels. Santa Claus creates Christmas through his own personal loss. Missing Christmas at home. Santa Claus is infinitely brave and Ms. Hynde showed me that. If Santa Claus does not leave for Christmas, there will be no Christmas for the rest of us and it's always a long long way through the snow, the end of the trip is uncertain, but Santa always leaves. For the rest of us mortals, Santa will be back at Christmas Time and he will bring the memories of all we miss. For which we are grateful.

I can't imagine the emotional pain of losing so many close to me. She is a strong and powerful soul. Her music touches me.

James Honeyman-Scott’s loss really shook the band. I wasn’t aware of Farndon being fired. I always thought “Learning to Crawl” was symbolic of trying to get over Honeyman-Scott’s death. Thank you. I’ve read her bio and I must’ve missed that.

I thought that the story about Honeyman-Scott applied to Back on the Chain Gang. Maybe both?

It was only 'Pretenders', the 'The' came after the death and replacement of two founding members.
