The fast is very easy brother. The Latin Rite has the easiest fast, our eastern brothers have a difficult fast not us. Remember how simple it is, all you have to do is NOT eat something to keep the fast. Focus on what you should do extra in terms of prayer and reading and don’t think about what you “can’t” have. That’s my advice, and remember: we don’t HAVE to fast. We GET to fast. It’s a gift!

After falling away for many years,, I returned to the Church during Lent. I had spent the time in fasting and work and prayer. I went to a half-day Lenten retreat and listened to a Priest assure us that fasting was just another name for a diet. It was not a holy offering.
Fasting was taught by Jesus and the Apostles. That is not penance though. Jesus never said a word about punishing ourselves after we sin. He told everyone to repent of your sins.

When are you going to worship Jesus and know that the church belongs to Him? If the reason you are doing penance is that the church says so then your penance is a waste of time. If you are doing it for Jesus and He has told you too then that's different.
