Turbo Flutter Noise on a Ferrari 488 GT3: Is this the weirdest sound for a Ferrari?

- Well, to be honest even the new twin turbo V8 sounds quite weird based on what you would expect from a Ferrari. And this is a GT3 racer... Anyway hearing that typical JDM or rally turbo flutter sound on this 488 GT3 makes me laugh every time. What do you think?

Well Bozzy, it's definitely not the Ferrari sounds of old, but I can't argue with the style and performance. To my untrained ears, the noises are more rallycar like. Awesome machines, but those cute little squirrel sneezes are funny coming from a car putting out such beastly performance numbers. 😂😂😂 Today's trivia question: How many squirrels can you fit into a GT3 Ferrari cage? I think quite a lot! 😆 As always, thanks for posting your awesome videos, sir!

The sound your hearing is a blow off valve. Relieves pressure from the Turbo when it's engaged then disengages when you decelerate. Which gives you the audible sound!
The Black 488 V8 rumble shines through just a bit more, but that little flutter sound is adorable. Like the sound of a 2JZ or RB26. lol

I heard this car at the IMSA race last year. The turbos sound really awesome, but its a step down from the 458 GTLM car, which screamed.

It's a recirculation valve as opposed to a BOV. Instead of blowing off to the atmosphere, it blows off to the intake tract. That's why it sounds like that.
It's different. Heard it for the first time at Brands Hatch Blancpain last year. I quite like it because it reminds me of the Group C Porsches, but I'm not a fan of the 488 noise as a whole. I feel the 458 was much more pleasing to the ears.
I really liked the bass sound very good and this model is very legual and has a torque different from the other models.

The sound is distinctly reminescent of the Prodrive P2 I think by Proton? Top Gear had it featured once a dozen years ago, Clarkson said it made a wicked sound like it was mincing squirrels as it passed by, it sounded phenomenal. This Ferrari sounds remarkable, I think it's a symptom of high end variable vane technology on the turbine, put simply it is clawing at the air in a different manner that leads to this noise.

I actually the noises of the turbos are fantastic, reminds me of a group C Porsche 962 or Audi Quattro Group B, turbo flutters I think suit all cars in motorsports whether it’s rallying or GT racing

"Flutter" is surge.
The chirp is from the blow off valve. Important distinction.
They don't have blow off valve or bypass valves, the chirp is flutter.

I think what you are actually hearing is the tires chirping on decel...... There is no component in a turbo that chirps, maybe the blow off valve.

More likely the need to get more power without making bigger engine, since the 488 is an entry-level (for a Ferrari, of course).

The Bentley Continental I saw last year certainly wasn't but not sure if that's a current thing. That thing sounded insane.
The Bentleys have sounded much quieter this year in pre-season testing. I'm almost certain they've added silencers. :(
The BMW Z4 GT3 sounded the nuts, now the M6 sounds dull.

Perhaps not the "typical" Ferrari sound, but the vaunted 288 GTO and F40 are both twin-turbo V8s. They don't sound exactly like this car, but a turbo V8 Ferrari isn't as outlandish as some seem to imply. Personally, I would prefer to hear a little more V8 volume with the flutter (the F40 LM makes a glorious noise!), but I like it.

Weird? That sounds great to me. Reminds me of the Turbo Charged Porsche Prototypes. Sure its not what people think of for a Ferrari but to me, that's the classic Turbo sounds In Sports car racing.

The Ferrari 488 GT3... This is a very efficient 'bella machina'; but due to its weak engine sound, the myth takes a beating.
One can do the same remark on all the modern turbocharged GT3s, but what is OK for a BMW, shocks for what concerns a Ferrari. The enchanting engine tone was contributing to the 'extra measure of harmony', that made the italian brand so popular...
We are living strange times, for sure.

I've always loved high-revy Ferrari V8 engines, until this one came along. At 1:02 i can honestly say that low pitched twin-turbo Nissan V6 sounds a whole lot better.

armorgeddon I'm not 100% sure but I think so. The new track layout was planned in case they wouldn't be able to renew the F1 contract. So they tried to find a solution to bring back some old racing championship like Superbike but the first chicane and Curva Grande aren't anymore "safe" for a motorbike race. That's why of that plan.
I still have to take a look there but I'm quite sure none of these works began. Even if a few weeks ago they demolished the bridge a few meters before the second chicane.. 🤔
Oh ok, that calms me down a bit. I really hope the don't change anything in terms of layout but re-design the runoff at Parabolica because with the 100% tarmac runoff it made the corner a joke.

I love it. I love love love it. The 458 sounded like a tired, sick hornet. It was iconic but this is just so much more composed.

I'm afraid I don't like it. The chirp is fine, but my mini does that, however it is yet another racing engine which sounds like it's being short shifted rather than tortured.

is the the sound from the turbo restrictor ,bov,waste gate ??? is not turbo flutter for sure .

They don't run blow off valves, waste gate is exhaust side and doesn't make any sound (other then exhaust sound), It sounds different to normal flutter because they run a restrictor in the intake.
what kind of restrictor ? im very interested cause almost all rally cars have this particular sound specially when letting off the gas. Would i need high boost pressure to get the same sound ?
Search "WRC turbo restrictor" on google, the GT3 one would be very similar if not the same, different pressure and turbos would change the sound slightly.
