I got into this voice teachers reacting thing only because I wanted to see artists that I appreciate being validated and talked about, but thing is, after some time I ended up enjoying the technical and analytical side of it quite a lot. And, to be honest, I think you're the only TH-cam voice teacher that actually gets into the things that should be discussed, while others just sit there and make videos reacting like a fan would. Thanks for actually putting in the time and effort, Sam, I think it really shows how dedicated and knowledgeable you are!
Well said indeed! I should have read what you wrote before writing my novel, haha. Thank goodness for channels like this to teach our new generation about some of the wonderful talent that came before and show what makes them great and why they are and always will be relevant to the current landscape of music.
re: the last bit of the video, your opinion on artistic approach/expression/direction - Im damn glad to have subscribed to you. That was a very articulate, reasonable flow of logic/opinion. Refreshing to listen to and think about.
A Perfect Circle is one of my favorite bands. So glad you made this video. You manage to explain theory in a way that is understandable and relaxed. Thank you, Sam.
That face at the very beginning is the same one I make every time I listen to them too. Especially if I've been listening to other stuff for a while. It's like diving into cool water.
I saw A Perfect Circle on their recent UK tour. They were incredible, Maynards voice is the instrument that completes the band. Flawless, so easy and hypnotic.
I LOVE how much of a fanboy you are, it's so cute watching you quietly sing along and smile at all the parts he's nailing, even at the end when you just had to mention he went lower than on the recording 🥺🖤✨
Have you seen their performance of Orestes from this concert? It is really something great. MJK alters his vocals a bit in some parts compared to the studio version, but it is for the better every time. It's my favorite version of that song since hearing it.
@@Egoblivion Maynard was absolutely on fire during this concert. I find myself coming back to watch these performances from time to time, and they never get old.

MJKs articulation, rhythm, poetry and angst speak to me:) excellent reaction and analysis Sam! I saw APC last year and they’re still just as explosive and genuine. His sound is signature and beautiful and haunting in the best way
You seem to enjoy A Perfect Circle as much as I do. In my opinion, he's one of the best vocalists of our time. I grew up listening to them too, I was just a few years older! Lol.

We saw APC, he had the no film rule, which I didn’t mind, it allowed us to really take in the show. Maynard is one of the best voices out there IMO. So unique and so talented, incredible. I was waiting for you to critic the “yell,” so so soooo good! Just goosebumps! Love your channel. ❤️
Your last bit of the video was really nice to hear coming from a professional in the business, I am a developing singer for a small rock band and I am in the process of really figuring out who I want to be on that stage. Your video reacting to Sober actually put my onto Tool, and Maynard as a singer. He was the first performer I actually saw that showed his pain through a total body performance that coincided with the themes of the songs he was singing. He is also probably my favorite singer, and your reactions to his performances and the critiques/analysis of his work give me more to look out for in my own development. Not saying I compare haha have you heard Opiate? But just that he is an idol and a source of inspiration. But thank you for your advice, I'm definitely going to take what you said to heart. I would love to see you react to Tool perform "Bottom" from Oakland in 1995, probably his most melodic version of that song I've heard. The scream at the end if heartbreaking, a lot of pain. Thanks again Sam.
Ahhh more Maynard!! Please react to his band Puscifer performing Grand Canyon!! One of the most beautiful songs with the most haunting, gorgeous vocals.
I love how you said that he’s very conscious of every sound he puts into it. I notice it a lot with his vocals in Puscifer. There’s an unbelievable control to his voice that I am in insane awe of. Soft, controlled, perfection.
Two things- 1) as a person whose home state is Colorado (though I no longer live there) - it’s nice to see Red Rocks. 2) Thank you for your hard work on these videos you produce. I am learning a lot.
Sam Sam Sam! I think this is my favorite video of yours so far! I appreciate the emotion you visually express in this vid, like you felt that shit for real. I've been watching these reaction videos for some time now and this dude is the best and moist technical sounding that I have seen. Very well done and you have a new subscriber! And if I had any singing voice at all I would want you as my teacher! Keep up the good work!
Love your analyzis as a professional . I'm a big fan of Maynard and you are spot on to notice the way he uses his voice to express himself in different ways, in different bands and in different situations, live or on record. That's what makes him and his bands so great.
A: you demonstrating that fry with so much ease made my day. B: I'd love to see you react to a vocalist that performs in a way you don't like. I'm not sure that I've seen any video of yours where you have less than positive commentary.
Discovered your channel through the Jinjer reaction a little while back, and I've enjoyed watching basically every single video you've been putting out since, even if the artists aren't ones I would normally enjoy or listen to. You give such awesome, unbiased analyses and never actively put down someone who's putting their all out there (regardless of whether or not you enjoy the music in question), it's such a refreshing change from everything. Also It was great to see the look on your face when this song started, and mouthed along to the words as it went on, clearly this is a song that you REALLY enjoy.
Undertow is in my top 5 albums of all time. Can you please react to Alice In Chains -Love Hate Love live at the Moore. It is jaw dropping. His voice is incredible in that. I also would like to make others aware who missed out on him. Pretty please.
I have been begging for this as well! This girl loves Layne! Hands down his best performance! Every reaction to that song blows peoples minds! I am interested to see what Sam thinks. R.I.P Layne. We miss your voice.
Had notification for this earlier, but waited until now to watch because I've been a huge fan of Maynard James Keenan for so long. Sam, you make me appreciate your critiques even more. No I don't sing, wish I could, lover of music forever, and curious on hows and whys to techniques. Gotta say Thanks, Sam.
When you mentioned getting into music at such a young age, and that sticking with you- same! MJK is a legend, and I’ve been a fan since my young teens! 🖤 I enjoyed hearing your analysis of his vowel choice and distortion in the voice. I also enjoyed you telling singers to be themselves!!!! 🖤🖤🖤
This is the only "react" channel im a real fan of. If i like something, its always nice to get reaffimation of that fandom through other people. On this channel however, i actually value the input Sam has on another level. Its teaching me something about the music and bands i like.
:08 Seeing his reaction to just those first notes being played put my mind at ease that I wasn't gonna have to go on defense automatically because of someone never having heard the magic that is Tool, APC and Puscifer and as ALWAYS, MJK's voice!!
haha so I know I am a bit behind the game here :) but that was great fun watching this with you. I had not seen that clip before, so thanks for getting it to me :) Fuck I miss live music! 2021. Sydney. Lockdown. peace.
Maynard is such a legend. Good analysis as usual Sam. Tool and A perfect circle were some serious high school music choices and still today its good times to go back to that music. Nice thing about music is its immortal in a way. No matter what you listen to growing up, you can always go back to that well, that memory, or pass it down to your kids hypothetically. Just good all around. Glad you explained the distortion so people don't get it totally mixed with how hes just using auto tune to sing good. It just adds to the energy with which the song is, the atmosphere the tone etc. Well done Sam.
We need more of these videos. I love watching you analyze video of artists you can tell you actually love and are very into... seems to be the rock videos... give us more rock!!!!
At 6:20 . . . Wow dude, that didn't sound the same as Maynard, but it was amazing! And then you go on to talk about being yourself instead of trying to be someone else. I've been trying to sing that note like Maynard for about a year now, and it's only just now that I can hit that note, because I tried to find out the way that works best for my voice, and now I can do it with distortion and quality, within FIFTEEN MINUTES of having seen this video! Thanks so much for doing this channel man! It's awesome! And most importantly, it's useful, valuable, and educational.
Love that you're such a Maynard fan. That's how I got here! He was awesome in a show I saw recently here in Amsterdam. Looking forward to Tool's show here in june! Mainly a metal and rock fan here but love the reactions! Keep it up!
Back when I studied music, I couldn’t turn my analytic brain off. I had to activly work on ignoring the analysis, but now I can turn it on and off at will. Same goes for the other arts forms I engage in (dance and photography). It needs a concious effort.
I wouldn't call myself a musician but I do play an instrument, and for me it's always on when listening to music. Like they said, it's a gift and a curse. Sometimes it's exhausting to not be able to listen to a song on braindead mode. On the other hand, it's such a gift to be able to go back to songs time and time again and appreciate the craftsmanship that went into it, discovering new layers and intricacies every time.
I have to give it up to you. I have seen other videos of so claim "vocal teachers" and even I can tell they are just making stuff up or just can't explain certain vocals or notes. But I can definitely tell you know your stuff! *Awesome work!* I love Maynard James Keenan work, since he was in the band TooL.
Maynard is and has been my favorite rock vocalist (perhaps all genre's) for a long time. I love his versatility in his ability to scream, sing rock style, sing soft ballad, do moody creepy stuff, and everywhere in between, all at an extremely high level. If anyone believes someone is superior I'd love to give them a listen, because I haven't heard anyone yet that could qualify.
Omg, I love this song. This song to me is like a harsh letter from my boyfriend. He said he would say those things too. That this song is true. But he still loves me. I appreciate him so much. The harsh truth of this song makes me want to be a better person. It's one of my favorites. I'm so glad you listened to it.
1:40 is precisely why I respect you as not just a "vocal coach" but someone with an ear for what an artist has chosen for THAT specific moment! There are reasons for slight modifications and I am so sick of people wanting perfection, you want perfection go listen to the fucking album. Live is an organic experience between artist and crowd and that changes nightly! They fucked up or changed something up? That was YOUR live experience! That in and of itself is special!
I love when bands do songs slightly different live. Theres a live version of tool H. When he says "connected to you", its hard to explain but he puts the emphasis on it differently and goes higher. Even though i cant find the song(cus how do you put that in yt) i still to this day after 12 yrs sing it like that.
His voice is awesome, and man do I LOVE how Red Rocks makes music sound. Going to that place live is something else. This song is my teenager years for sure though.
I'd love to see you do more tool or APC videos.. grew up listening to them, love em still after decades lol Maynard is a genius with melodies, lyrics, and of course his beautiful Voice 😍😍
Would love to see you analyzing one of the newer A Perfect Circle Songs. Eat The Elephant is such a great album and it just shows how soft Maynard can actually go. Saw them live performing their new Album a few months ago and that whole concert is still burnt into my memories, because it was so special.
I absolutely love your channel and have actually worked with some of the performers that you have reacted to as a live sound engineer. I have chosen to work mostly doing festivals in North America in summer and then Australia and New Zealand in there summer. I love not being tied to one band and the challenge of one stage with so many different artists to mix. anyway, the reason I am stating this is that I have seen of the years (26) that many artists have either lost their voice or have had to modify it to continue and it has strongly influenced the way in which I have had to work with them. One prime example is Marylin Manson whom in 1997 needed very little work other than an echo effect modulated, which was his style of singing, however working with him again in 2015 let's just say I had a lot of work on my hands to make anything of it at all. I would love to see your reaction on singers who have lost or destroyed their voice and if there where giveaways from the technique early that may have caused it. Also how much does substance use and alcohol affect a voice, some singers it seems not to and others it seems to destroy?
Just wow, not cause of Maynard (im a huge fan too), just wow cause of you... my english is not good enough to explain it but you are doing great, plz more prog stuff like this (tool etc)... you are very authentic, love it!
I've watched alot of.vocal coaches react to maynards singing & it always seems like he's almost teaching them & they're relaying to us what's going on. Remarkable singer. I've never heard a bad review.
lol I completely relate to what you said about this album defining everything you like. I had thirteenth step on my old iPod and it was one of the first albums I'd gotten into on my own, without my parent's influence. Definitely started me down a path of discovering music I wouldn't have otherwise come across. Great video!

But I can definitely tell you know your stuff! *Awesome work!* I love Maynard James Keenan work, since he was in the band TooL.
I LOVE that you're singing along to this!
Loved your analysis. It’s always amazing to see bands play here in Colorado (thats where red rocks is located),because we lack oxygen here.
Ugh..i love that you love a perfect circle. Its so nice to see reactions to this.
It only took me one video of yours to subscribe! You're input is very sweet and informative and helpful! Keep up the great work!
I love when bands do songs slightly different live. Theres a live version of tool H. When he says "connected to you", its hard to explain but he puts the emphasis on it differently and goes higher. Even though i cant find the song(cus how do you put that in yt) i still to this day after 12 yrs sing it like that.
th-cam.com/video/b6CFaMh3rys/w-d-xo.html maybe this one?
Your tangent was sage advice in every area of life. Better to simply be yourself. Always enjoy your videos. Great analysis of interesting vocalists.
I WAS AT THIS SHOW! Gosh, what a combination... Listening to your wonderful analysis while basking in an amazing memory.
Oh, it so glad to see like you really love this music :) It's in your eyes, in your movements. Love it!
I love this middle school throwback. I like the part about sounding like yourself and being individual.
Can we just appreciate how near perfect Maynard’s pitch is? It’s amazing
1. I LOVE THAT YOU KNOW ALL THE WORDS!
2. You are amazing!!
thank you! more mjk! you are very knowledgeable, great videos 😁
You deserve more subs man. Love your content.
I've watched alot of.vocal coaches react to maynards singing & it always seems like he's almost teaching them & they're relaying to us what's going on. Remarkable singer. I've never heard a bad review.
What I like most about the video is that you enjoy the song. Then you declare yourself a fan and it's like YAY!
lol I completely relate to what you said about this album defining everything you like. I had thirteenth step on my old iPod and it was one of the first albums I'd gotten into on my own, without my parent's influence. Definitely started me down a path of discovering music I wouldn't have otherwise come across. Great video!
