I want to share with you the importance of value/monochrome which is so important when creating the illusion of depth and the illusion of light in a painting.
Most art tutors, in my opinion do not stress the importance of value but in art it is essentially how light or dark something is on a scale of white to black with white being the highest value and black being the lowest value It is widely considered to be one of the most important variables to the success of a painting, even more so than your selection of colour. Gosh that all sounds so complicated !!! But, it really isn't.

So let me show you how I took my painting to the next level by practising these technique and also share with you the importance of simplification of subject matter which is fundamentally the secret to loose painting

I have watched your demos beginning with the sunflower and poppy since 2009, fell in love with your relaxing, easy pace style of instruction, and practiced over and over again your tutorials as a beginner. After 11 years, I finally understand why you do what you do! Not many artists can explain as clearly as you the purpose of allowing the paper to become soaking wet with water and pigment. This particular tutorial is so wonderful for explaining how to use different aspects of the brush, what pushing dark pigment with a damp brush can do to create the soft hues to make the color pop. You are a fun artist with depth, style, and wonderful teaching skills. Love your artwork and lessons!

Have you ever tried elegant writer in black ink? They are water soluble and give off some amazing green and pink tones...

The artist Paul Klee is credited with the quote 'I take a line out for a walk.' Interestingly the essayist Joseph Epstein paraphrased the quote for the title for one of his books which is called 'A line out for a walk.' Seems apt for both artists and writers.

Joanne Boon Thomas I, too, have fought the grey for 30 years......and now on the way to being WHITE! Not grey! And am keeping it
Love the sketch, loved it when you did the sky and thought..stop now it looks great.....then the bushes went in..stop now it looks great..and on it went...Im not sure if its brave to stop or brave to keep going. Love it Joanne. Can also see this same sketch in Paynes Grey, Viridian green, yellow even, reds, purples...Im not sure any one colour would be wrong...that would have been a great project...same sketch 6 different colours.
