You have to download the "KFX Output" plugin. Then when you go to convert, select KFX as your output format. Then on the sidebar on the KFX Output plugin check the "create personal document instead of book" option. That will create a version that displays covers on the Colorsoft.
FYI for those wondering, the reason for the back order is there is a hardware issue, two of them but primarily one driving, with these. My Colorsoft has it unfortunately. There is a yellow band issue where the lighting makes the screen look like someone highlighted the first half inch of your screen at the bottom in a dark yellow. It looks terrible and is very distracting. The second, less common one, is light bleed while in the dark page mode. If you aren't looking at an exact 90 degree angle, you see bars of light at the edges. Which sucks at night. I love the color and wanted to love the device, I may try exchanging but apparently they have had to stop that too. So I may just return it. The launch has been a disaster. If you want to buy it, wait a few months for tue next manufacturing run.
That was my guess, the estimated delivery on them right now is 3-5 weeks so I might take my chances and get one on black Friday anyway incase that is a good sign they are waiting for the new shipment.
I would recommend using the panel to panel view on the Colorsoft instead of pinch to zoom. It's super speedy refresh without the jenkyness of doing the pinch to zoom. You just double tap on one panel and then it will show full page, then each panel on that page, then go to the next page and repeat. It stays in that mode until you double tap on a panel and then it would go to page by page again. I found that experience to be really pleasant when I was reading on the Colorsoft.
I share your love for the Oasis - metal case, power button on the top, glass screen, autorotation of pages, and PAGE TURN BUTTONS. I have two Oasis models (one with the warm screen setting and one without.) Since I’ve had nearly every other model of the Kindle since they first came out, except for the Voyage and the Scribe) I ordered the new Paperwhite Signature edition to see what it had to offer. It has really fast processing, better contrast, USB C charging, wireless charging, etc. It doesn’t have the page turn buttons that I love and they put the power button back on the bottom, but it is a keeper.
Waterproof is great for if you’re in a wet country and are reading outside waiting on public transport. Do this myself in Ireland it rains a lot so that’s a perk for me 😊
Thank you so much for this review. I’ve wanted a Kindle Color for years now. I’m honestly surprised it took them this long. I’m going to hold off until some of the hardware glitches are worked out. I’m glad it’s quick and that the page turn is smooth. But the sleep button being on the bottom… 🤦♀️
Mike, ever tried the lightwedge? It is a sheet of acrylic with led's on one end and you just put it over the page and it lights the whole page. It works so so good.
Thank you for doing this review! I purchased the new Paperwhite instead of getting the Colorsoft. I’m sure I would like the colors, but I don’t read comics or manga and don’t think the extra cost is worth it for me. I love the Paperwhite though.
I loved my oasis & the live buttons but mine was so slow loading and I had to charge it often but that wasn’t a deal breaker as much as the slow load - I’m really enjoying the Colorsoft but I’m with you Amazon add the side button please!!
When the Oasis is in airplane mode it lasted a while on a charge. My kindle scribe doesn't get used often, but on airplane mode it can get 6 months easy sitting idle. So if you don't need to sync often, airplane mode might be worth exploring.
I see on Amazon website it is not well received. Currently sitting at 2.7 which is awful for a new device. I was really looking forward to this device, maybe future models will be better.
Kindle ditching the buttons on their whole slate bothers me. I really prefer page turning buttons and will try and stick with my Oasis until I can't any longer.
This is a no-go if you have the last non-color Paperwhite Kindle (me). It’s faster, but not so much. Cover colored? Cool, but for that price. Comics? C’mon, or paper or a tablet. Some of the features you talked about are software related and already present with my version (no idea with older models). As much as you, I hate that button at the bottom: they want you to buy their case. They’re trying too hard to be smart … Thanks for the review.
Great review as always. Just a thought, have you considered a Kobo Libra Color? It’s similar to oasis with live buttons and in color. Not sure if you’re looking to try another ecosystem but maybe it would be a good fit for you. Just throwing that out there.
I love my Kindle Colorsoft! It was time for me to have an upgrade because I've been using my Kindle Fire HD (first Gen) for 13 years! It was starting to show dead pixels but it still works! 😂
I use a case on my kindle, I think that has helped me with the power button on the bottom. I have never pressed it by mistake xD. Also, so far I haven’t seen the need for side buttons, I only tap the screen and it changes pages, I don’t swipe. I think buttons are good if you are left handed, or if you like that extra width to grab the device for ergonomics. Or if you need to go backwards while reading.
remember the new paperwhite has the exact same performance as the colorsoft. Only get the colorsoft if you really want color, and if you have an extra $120 around 😅. I did got one and it is great :).
PPI stands for Pixels Per Inch. 300 for black and white, 150 for color. So essentially, when you are reading a manga or comic book in black and white, it will be twice as sharp as it will be in color. I might hold off for that reason alone and wait until the tech is capable of at least 250 PPI for color content. That and Bezos will have to pry my Oasis out of my cold dead fingers because I cannot live without the page turn buttons and ergonomic design.
I appreciate you doing these kindle reviews. I read all my books on kindle so it helps me out. If this thing wasn’t so pricey I’d probably get one but I think for what it is, I feels a bit over priced. Also I just read b&w text so I don’t have real incentive to get one right away. I’d make an exception if they moved the sleeper button and had the side clickers.
I love using Calibre to change the cover art. I like having my classic Stephen King covers on there. I just need them to put color on the basic Kindle because I like that smaller size.
Great review Mike, thanks for this! I ended up getting a scribe a while back as a birthday gift, and might stick to that for now. Those covers and artwork look amazing on it though!
Thanks for reviewing this so we dont have to! I have a 10th generation Paperwhite thats starting to slow down and get somewhat clunky. Is it like a paperwhite for reading the actual books? I'm not a comic reader, its what you have said about the performance of it that has me more excited lol.
Hey Mike, thanks for making this! My Paperwhite is slowing down, so I was thinking about going for the Colorsoft or a Kobo. Does the Colorsoft have dark mode?
I’m glad that the performance is improved. I have the paperwhite and sometimes get impatient with its movement and refresh rate. I use my iPad for my comics and kindle for reading but I’m thinking of getting this. But the cost is holding me back. Maybe wait for a price drop or jump in. Decisions decisions.
Yeah I like my 10.3" color screen because i don't have to pinch and zoom. I feel like if you want color for comics either a bigger screen is needed or a LCD is needed. I enjoy my color screen mostly because I use my eink color tablet for journaling and sketching. I do highlight text but only in one color. I haven't found a use for multiple colors there. My tablet is a every two or three days charge with everyday moderate use. I'm glad that kindle has the option for color I just feel like a color scribe or oasis would have been a better size.
I have both new paperwhite signature 7” and the Colorsoft. I like the color covers, and if you read and highlight nonfiction like me, A lot to like. The regular paperwhite is faster, crisper font, brighter, without the screendoor effect of the colorsoft. If you have good vision or glasses, you can see the smeary screen over everything. Battery life about half on the colorsoft in real world use. For only reading fiction, paperwhite is better. For highlights and color covers, I like the colorsoft, and seem to be using it more. Personally, my Oasis is in a drawer as it is too big, and that notch thing makes it too big with a case.
The way I was able to get my sideloaded book covers to show up was to use the "send to Kindle" feature on my amazon account. You just have to have your Calibre file downloaded to your computer and add it from Send to Kindle
I only really have one question: is the largest font size the same as the one on the Oasis? I returned the Oasis because the largest font size wasn't close to the size I use in MapleRead on my iPad. If the largest font size isn't any bigger, that's a bon-starter for me. I just bought the cheapest paper-white to use with Calibre DeDRM, so I can get them into MapleRead.
Awesome video! The Colorsoft is a good device. It had a rough launch, but it will improve once Amazon addresses the issues. The new 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite actually is just as fast as the Colorsoft. (The speed increase is new for all 12th-generation models.) Plus, the Paperwhite Signature Edition specifically has feature parity with the Colorsoft minus color and other tidbits. The Paperwhite 12th Gen has even better battery life than Colorsoft, arguably even sharper text, and a proper dark mode that Colorsoft doesn't have. The Colorsoft is pricy, but again, it's color. I picked the 12th Gen Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition. I like the better screen sharpness and the true night mode feature that Colorsoft doesn't have, so I went with Paperwhite. Also, it has better brightness than Colorsoft. Color e-readers are always a bit darker due to the inclusion of an RGB filter to render color. So, Colorsoft is really aimed at those who like comics. But pretty much everything else is always in black and white anyway. Besides, I can still read comics on my Paperwhite just fine, just in different shades of gray. That's just my 2-cent opinion. 🙂
I completely agree with you. Buttons are a must. My Oasis died a while ago and I bought 2021 Paperwhite instead. I barely use it and if I do I don't like it as much. I now see Oasis on 50% sale on US Amazon and my heart hurts because in Europe it still costs 320€ which is insane for 6yo device with microUSB and at least two generations old e-ink technology. That being said I still might just switch to different brand. Your side loading issues are on purpose and affect me on Paperwhite as well. Amazon purposefully changed the way Kindle is registering covers. On top of that, if you side load a book you can't highlight from left to right to the next screen. It only works from right to left, to previous screen. This has been an issue since last year that they don't bother to fix. And I suspect it has zero priority because it mysteriously doesn't affect books purchased in Kindle store.
Hi Mike. That does look really pretty, but I have to be honest, that screen is not nearly big enough for me to read manga on. The Kindle fire will always be my number I. Thanks for sharing info about that. I also wanted to let you know, that I am 60% into reading while listening to Star Wars Rebel Rising by Beth Revis, which is a young adult novel that adds to the Rogue One story. It's really good.
I've waited so long for the color edition of the kindle but now that it is here, I haven't purchased it because I don't think I can give up my Oasis. I need the buttons.
I can’t believe they didn’t move the power button. I have a stand and it constantly goes to sleep on my paper white. No upgrades? For that money?? At least performance is better, thanks.
Even in your video it seems you also have the discoloration on the bottom. Why not test the KOBO COLOUR? It literally has all the things you wished this had at the end.
It's funny to me that you like the Oasis so much because that was my least favorite kindle. I don't use the buttons and I like a near borderless bezel. I also always disliked the asymmetric back of the device. The only thing I loved about it was the screen size and once the Paperwhite was updated I immediately switched. Not sure if you've seen, but I think Amazon has officially declared the Oasis dead, as in once their stock runs out they won't create any more. Thanks for the review of the Colorsoft. I'll probably wait for a second or third revision for them to work out the kinks and bring down the price, but otherwise it sounds like your experience wasn't as negative as what I've seen others saying.
I returned my Colorsoft due to the infamous yellow tinging issue. It also kind of made me realize I don't really need a color Kindle. If I want to read color content like comics I can do it on my tablet and its oled screen.
Lmao I have that Star Wars shirt, nice taste! Looks good and thank you for the review, waiting to see if I can get a little bit of a discount on it during black Friday. The estimated delivery is 3-5 weeks right now!
I love my Oasis. I don't care about color though. And I like the buttons to turn the page. It would be a plus to see my covers in color but not for the price.
I have the Voyage, the Paperwhite, the Oasis. All 3 original versions when they first came out. Oddly my Paperwhite still works like I just opened it. My Voyage is the one I read daily on althoughnit goes sideways from time to time and gets janky it works great. My Oasis was my favorite but I got mine with the original charging cover and the cover & device has never agreed on batterly life. The cover says its about to die and the device has 90% charge left or its super quirks. But now it can be on a full charge and 30 minutes later battery is dead or my favorite is that it just freezes completely. I cant turn it off or reset it - I just have to put it to the side while the battery runs completely down. Kindle Scribe just has never intetested me for the price because I have a full-size iPad.. But this...I need a new Kindle. I think I'm gonna get! I need one Kindle, not 3 haha!
Nope. Amazon incrementally added features to the Paperwhite line that equaled or surpassed the Oasis. Obviously no metal case, glass screen and page buttons. But Paperwhites now have better contrast, USB C charging, wirelesss charging, better battery life, speedy processing, etc. I love my two Oasis models but I did order the Paperwhite Signature edition and it leaves the Oasis in the dust. And Amazon can sell more of them for a cheaper price than it could sell the Oasis. Plus, Amazon has officially stated that the Oasis has been discontinued.
@ I bought my paperwhite back in 2021. I’m sure internally it’s better than what I have, but externally (screen size etc etc) is it the same or a little bigger?
@@peterdelucaI believe the new Paperwhite, the Paperwhite Signature, and the Colorsoft now all have 7” screens. I don’t have the new Paperwhite but the new Paperwhite Signature and the Colorsoft are a tad taller and a bit narrower than the Oasis. In other words, back to the dimensions of the old Paperwhites. (I think the Colorsoft is the same inside and out as the Paperwhite Signature but with a color screen.) I bought a sleeve for my Oasis that completely covers the Oasis. The Paperwhite Signature sticks out of the top of the sleeve by roughly 1/4”.
I wonder if Mike is actually talking about the 2021 Paperwhite and doesn't realize that the 2024 Paperwhite exists? I have the 2024 Paperwhite and it is by far the fastest ereader that I've ever used. It is almost as responsive as a tablet. And all the tech reviews have said that the 2024 Paperwhite is faster than the Colorsoft.
Yeah the price point is just too high for me, especially when the Kobo Clara Colour costs the same as a Paperwhite... Also the removal of ability to download and transfer via USB for the new Kindles is a big red flag for me as well.
@mikesbookreviews I agree with "Thelongesttake" reading a physical book is by far the only way for me. I read in bed and the very few trips I do take I bring my book. However on the trips I'm usually too busy to read. But everyone is different so it really doesn't matter what I think. Whatever is comfortable for you is the best.
@@mikesbookreviews If you're used to Kindle and you buy everything on Amazon it makes sense to stick to the Amazon ecosystem. But I find the Amazon ecosystem too restrictive. It's like the Apple of ereaders whereas I find Kobo the Android of ereaders. Side loading on Kobo is very easy but like you said in your video it's unnecessarily hard on Kindle. The main reason I went away from Kindle about two years ago was because Bezos and I didn't want everything I did to be Amazon. I order enough stuff from Amazon lol. But also Kobo gives me more freedom. Like I can customize my book reading the way I want it but when Kindle's update made the Kindle's UI become more cellphone like I left Kindle.
The Fire HD 7, which you can purchase for like $40-50, already has all the colour options, so it’s a bit embarrassing from them to try and peddle it as a great new feature.
Amazon totally dropped the ball. I'll stick to my regular KPW for books and my iPad mini for everything else. For almost $300 USD, they shouldn't have the same consistent, widespread problem with the screen. Colorsoft is a 👎.
Yes! This thing not showing my book covers from calibre is driving me crazy! Please let us know how to make them show up 😫
You have to download the "KFX Output" plugin. Then when you go to convert, select KFX as your output format. Then on the sidebar on the KFX Output plugin check the "create personal document instead of book" option. That will create a version that displays covers on the Colorsoft.
Mike just casually showing off the Devils cover…….i can’t wait until May😅
The thing is, the new Paperwhite also got a boost of performance, so i'm sticking to paperwhite for books and ipad for comics and manga
For sure. The new PaperWhite is a great device. my wife uses one. I still think this is faster.
Yeah, this thing doesn't seem worth 280 bucks.
Would love a Calibre video, there are other ones around but I trust you to explain it better for a tech-challenged person.
I'm thinking about it, I'll let you know!
That’s what I was wondering. I know the fire allows you to do panel views
I was not aware of this. Thanks!

I like the new intro. looks great!

Thanks for the video Mike. What do you think about the BW text quality?
I was REALLY hoping for an eight inch, color Scribe this year.... Maybe next year...

Pls video on how to get cover when side loading. A lot of times it works for me, but when it doesn't, man it sucks.
Oh, I know. Plenty hate the Oasis. I can't let go of it.
I returned my Colorsoft due to the infamous yellow tinging issue. It also kind of made me realize I don't really need a color Kindle. If I want to read color content like comics I can do it on my tablet and its oled screen.
Panos Panay, the new head of Kindle, is against buttons for some odd reason.
Lmao I have that Star Wars shirt, nice taste! Looks good and thank you for the review, waiting to see if I can get a little bit of a discount on it during black Friday. The estimated delivery is 3-5 weeks right now!
I had the first Nook, the first two Kindles but I have been without either for last few years. What’s the best without getting too pricey?
I love my Oasis. I don't care about color though. And I like the buttons to turn the page. It would be a plus to see my covers in color but not for the price.
Is there a way to side load with Calibre and still have the books synch along devices and kindle apps?
Is it possible to download pdf file working on kindle form?
Kobo libra colour... It's the way forward!
Thanks for this review, Mike! Sounds like a really nice device, but not worth the price tag imo
That's frustrating
@ Definitely, but I'm excited for a new Kindle.
Another device or 10 -15 hardcovers?
Always a difficult choice.
No problem good video do I enjoyed it
I beleive certain kindles still come with ads but if your buying the more premium ones then they take them out
None of the signature editions have lock screen ads it doesn't matter if its black and white or the colorsoft.
Do we think the oasis will eventually come out with a color version? Or has it been discontinued?
Discontinued
It's pretty much dead, sadly
I wanted the Oasis so badly and now it's gone 😢
I wonder if Mike is actually talking about the 2021 Paperwhite and doesn't realize that the 2024 Paperwhite exists? I have the 2024 Paperwhite and it is by far the fastest ereader that I've ever used. It is almost as responsive as a tablet. And all the tech reviews have said that the 2024 Paperwhite is faster than the Colorsoft.
Hard no for me using kindles.
Hard yes for the Zelda tee ❤
Yeah the price point is just too high for me, especially when the Kobo Clara Colour costs the same as a Paperwhite... Also the removal of ability to download and transfer via USB for the new Kindles is a big red flag for me as well.
You should give kobo a try!
I have the Kindle fire it's dead though I need to recharge it
Wow you don’t have to call Amazon to take off the advertisements. I can’t believe it
if you want colour why not just get a Fire tab?
I feel like I'd benefit from having a kindle to read books but I just can't see myself substituting physical books for a kindle.
I read both ebooks and physical books. I want to support my local bookstore but I also love my Kindles.
I got hooked reading it in bed and on trips without having to take a brick of a book with me.
@mikesbookreviews i have to travel for work sometimes and I would probably benefit from having a Kindle.
Can you turn the kindle on its side? Then the power button would not matter.
Yes, you can read in landscape mode.
Bro I'll give up my oasis when they come out with a color one
I wish! Sadly, it seems they are phasing the Oasis out.
This colour screen but on a scribe sized reader and Oasis buttons and I'll bite.
The older I get the easier it is to read on my kindle!
power button on the bottom… awful new choice just like the new Mac Mini
It's not new, It's been there at least since Kindle 4 came out like 13 years ago.
I was with you all the way until you mentioned the price. I am still boycotting all companies that make products I can't afford. 😆
Ha ha totally understandable
😊👍
Will this new Kindle device tell me where to start with Stephen King?
I hit the sleep button on my paper white constantly and it is very annoying. Weird placement.
Strange, I never touch it even if I read in my bed
You don’t have to zoom in for comics just double click
Yeah, I was unaware before today's comments
Babe, wake up. A new Mike Kindle video just dropped!
Why don't you send all your epub files through your email hat way you don't have to reload all your stubs over and ever again
I’m still a little annoyed that it is US only at the moment
Too bad you have not mentioned quality issues and the yellowness at the bottom.
I didn't have that so all I could do is mention at the end that some have had defective ones.
Why are you changing outfits between takes!
Only e reader I seen to get comic book readers leave the phone and tablet screens
I still think the iPad is the best for digital comics. Tough to beat that screen.
So what you're saying Kobo Colour is the way to go 😂
Maybe, but I'm partial to the Kindle. Too late to go back now.
I've had a Fire tablet for a few years. Bought it during one of the prime day deals. I don't get this at all
Different technology. Kindle Fire is a tablet with and LED/LCD screen. This is e ink.
Amazon totally dropped the ball. I'll stick to my regular KPW for books and my iPad mini for everything else. For almost $300 USD, they shouldn't have the same consistent, widespread problem with the screen. Colorsoft is a 👎.
