    I ordered my firsts tarantula sling a couple of days ago and he/she is going to be an L. parahybana. I fell in love with the species the moment I saw it and the fact that they're common, unexpensive and easy to care is a bonus for me, it doesn't make them any less impressive nor any less beautiful .

    My first "birdeater" species was a L. parahybana and I was completely enamoured with it from the moment I got it. When it moved, it was like a blur and the fact I could actually hear it stomp the ground when it ran and jumped on prey was just incredible. Totally chill until that food arrives.. Such a magnificent species.

      Thank you. I love mine. I mostly brought up the hate thing because I couldn't believe that there were people that disliked them but I also understand where they are coming from. They mostly dislike them because they are frequently thrown in as freebies and they end up with more than they need or want. I know I've had to turn down some for this reason myself.

      Thank you. I may show off some of my orchids in an upcoming episode. Glad I've got at least one person interested in them. My daughter has kinda gotten me back into collecting them. I'm up to 16 plants, but I'm mostly sticking to miniatures and the strange ones.

      @CricketsMa 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TarantulaHaven I've been an orchid fan since I was a kid, and always managed to have at least a few. We used to live near an orchid/begonia nursery, so it was relatively simple to get a lovely specimen. Out here on the high desert of Utah, on-line would be the only way I could purchase any, and providing adequate humidity would be a project I can't even fathom. So, I am orchidless. I don't think that's a word, but, oh well.

    • @TarantulaHaven
      @TarantulaHaven  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CricketsMa that's a shame. If you have the space, I would recommend an indoor greenhouse and raise miniatures. There are so many TH-cam videos out there that show how to keep them even in dry environments. The mini orchids are so unique and some bloom constantly. I love my L. parahybana and can't understand why people would hate them. The statement that they pounce on everything is very accurate. Mine even attacks the stream of water when I fill her waterdish and she really likes to eat. :D I have one issue with her, any time I redo her enclosure I try putting plants in it. She usually destroyes every plant with in a week or two. Does yours show the same behavior? Great video Alex. I always look forward to your next upload. Keep up the good work. *cheers

      I guess it's the urticating hairs. They're supposed to be especially terrible, second only to Theraphosa. I have two LPs though, the big female being the apple of my eye. Both are flicky hair kickers but neither have irritated me yet.

    I'm so glad i got the L.P... bu the time it got into its juvenile stage, it was already like 4". Kinda crazy to see a 3-3.5" spider that still looks very much like a sling. It built a HUGE burrow.. im mean a tunnel that was probably 12" long in total. It lived in there and pretty much waited for prey to venture onto the burrow where it would eat and basically live its whole life. I rehoused it, and it hasnt built a burrow since, which i kinda figured. It only existed on the burrow because it was the life it knew. Now it's a BIG opposing juvenile that kinda just chills out in the open all the time. Which is what I got it for.😂

    @OldManRogers 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I love mine, I got it as a free sling and it was tiny. It grew so quickly. The hairs are a little annoying and it is quite skittish/defensive. It lost 2 legs in a moult that got tangled with 2 legs and it amputated one and I had to amputate the other. 4 legged spiders tend not to do well and I was worried but I 'hand' fed it and kept it well watered with a little bit of sugar in the water for extra calories and it moulted and got the legs back (a bit crooked). Then a moult later and it's back to being perfect. I called it 'Fishy' since it is a 'salmon' pink bird eater. I don't handle my tarantulas although I'm tempted to with my Choco golden knees but deffo not the salmon pink! Having to take care of it so much when it was vulnerable really made me invested into it's wellbeing.

Now that I am 62 and have lymphoma cancer, plus the lady in my life and her son, are afraid of Spiders, so I don't keep them anymore. I had 82 Tarantulas, but aside from the LP, a few of my favorite Spiders were my Brazilian Black, Chilean Rose, Goliath Bird Eaters, (2) and Red Rump Tarantula. (B. Vegans). My LP is an absolute puppy and I adore her. Personally I don't react to her hair AT ALL. I can handle the molts, the dirt, or being bombarded diractly and don't even get an itch. I don't think they are, or at least mine, is aggressive AT ALL. Yes they have a high prey drive, but just blow at them and they'll run to their hide, then I can work around the enclosure without her coming out again for a while.

    In case anyone is wo dering about the freebie problem - it is the demand isnt there for their breeding a lot- and since they have such large clutches - (up to 3k eggs per!), and when sales dont match the stock, it becomes a burden on the breeder/seller, and off some go as freebies, sadly. Such a lovely species, though. Maybe breeders should slos down and wait for demand again- its not like they are a short lived species, to where it is imperative they get bred to keeo thwir CB (captive bred) numbers curculating to keep the species alive...and they do live 18ish years sometimes, so there is plenty of time to allow their numbers to balance out!

      They are pretty cool. I'm not too susceptible to their hairs. My B. boehmei doesn't bother me too much but I do get pretty itchy from the LP. I have worse reactions from my G. porteri though for some reason.

      @@TarantulaHaven Interesting, I still think I will have to get one of these for my small collection. One of the ladies I work with loves to take pictures of my various tarantulas. I told her today that I was looking into a "bigger" species. Her reaction was priceless when I told her they can get to 9+ inches! (ok maybe 9 ish inches). Again her face was priceless! Next month when it is warmer I will be setting my T albo on her desk to see her reaction! Granted I told her about how big it is and she was fine with it and is really eager to take pictures of it (if my T albo ever decides to come out of her hide....). So my 9th pick is complete. I think I will get an OBT for the 10th. Speed isn't an issue. I have done my research and will be getting this sling enclosure set up this month followed by the juvenile enclosure as well. I plan on only doing 2 re-houses before it is an adult. Further re-housing I know is required as the substrate ages. Tarantula Cribs has some awesome enclosures but I feel their biggest enclosure will still be too small for an OBT. They need room or they get will get crazy! I know you have some of this species and would be delighted to see your recommendations for brands, sizes, and substrate for what you use! Love your content Alex! Keep up the good work kind sir!

    It's funny I always thought keeping tarantulas as more of an adult hobby but yet them cards looked totally like there for the little kid market, perfect for you with your school kids Alex but not so for as grown adults!

    • @TarantulaHaven
      @TarantulaHaven  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems that way, but I know several adult keepers that love the cards simply because they have info on them about the different species. Kind of an easy reference. Some people stick them to the enclosure of the specimen they have.

    I just sexed my klugi sling 2 days ago and its female! Don't have a LP, but wouldn't mind getting one. They do seem to get a lot of hate. I agree it's mainly because of the "commonality" of the species. I absolutely LOVE the aggressive feeding response. That is the reason I'm in love with my Theraphosa. The cats are super cute! Love the GBB Cindy (forgot how she spelled her name lol) made. All the stuff she did was amazing!

    I fail to understand the hate relationship of this species, because a lot of those reasons don't sound that pressing?? What's funny is I don't know anyone that hates them either and even people I know IRL.Many forget the normal looking species started it all. This is prompting me to get one now now haha.

    • @TarantulaHaven
      @TarantulaHaven  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha! It really mostly amounts to how common they are. The people I know that hate them it's mostly because they've received them as freebies quite frequently when they order and end up getting several of them. They're large tarantulas and take up space so after a while you get tired of seeing them. I've had them offered to me before and I've had to turn them down. I'm content with the one but I don't want any more. Fortunately more vendors are giving choices as to what freebies you can get instead of just sending them. :)

    i have an a chalcodes sp new river, an a seemanni, a b emilia, and a p pulcher, and i have a 3” female LP on the way! it’s nice to find a video like this, so many people post videos of LPs eating mice or trying to like show off how big they are but holding them unsafely and flinging them around. i’ve been in the hobby for a few years and it really seems like all kinds like to get and show off their LPs for shock factor instead of appreciating having one and taking care of it properly
