i got a lasiodora parahybana as my first tarantula 2 weeks ago and today when i came back from school i catched her molting! im so excited for her to finish :D

I picked this species up on a whim and she is quicky becoming one of my favorites. I am also in love with my Hapalopus sp. Columbia from fear not. I believe that you may have actually produced it! I rarely comment in TH-cam but I wanted to say that your website and your videos have been a huge inspiration for me not only to overcome my huge fear of spiders but also to grow a collection of amazing critters.
They are such cool spiders, and for many of us, they are our first "giants". Yeah, those might have been mine! I have a few of the slings left myself...they're growing like weeds! That is so awesome that my articles and videos have helped you to get over your fear. Been out of the hobby for almost 10 years, until my lady wanted her first T, we planned a trip to a local expo for a B. albopilosum (her chosen beginner species) and I couldn't resist also picking up a dirt cheap 1/4" LP sling and I love it, I raised a 7" female from a sling before I had to re-home my collection (I moved across country, all 14 spiders found homes). Thanks for the brush up lesson, my little one is doing very well and Ive been pursuing your videos contemplating what to get next...haha the addiction begins again. Keep up the great work, love your passion and your videos.
I have the L. parahybana and it does indeed grow fast. I recently picked up a Lasiodora itabunae and it was labeled as common name: "Brazilian itabuia scarlet." I love the name Fire Hiney (what someone else mentioned)! LP doesn't burrow and LI has burrowed a little, but they are both great eaters! I gave them hides and can't wait to see them grow even bigger. Thank you for the husbandry video!
I've got one LP that grew fairly fast and three slow growers. It seems that they are all over the place in terms of growth rates. So odd. Hahaha. Yeah, when I first got mine, there wasn't a standard common name for them. I made up the "fire Hiney". haha Thanks again!
i have 3 of the Lp's i have raised from slings. i love them. mine have never filled the water dishes. they were on the dry sub after the sling stage and they really grew quick. if people out there don't have one . get one you will love them. thanks Tom.
Man, mine all play with their dishes like they're gym equipment and fill them up with dirt. lol The moisture dependency gets mentioned a LOT with these guys, and I just don't see it. Thanks for chiming in, bud! :)
I rescued my two LPs from my local shelter, I just love them. Big, beautiful, great eaters. Really an underrated species. I love your husbandry videos, Tom. Keep them coming!

I have a Lasiodora difficilis and I love it. It just molted the other day and it has a burrow but has a widow that i see it all the time..Thanks for all you info. Love your channel I learn alot.... I moisten the substrate twice a week and as soon as start spritzing it comes out walks around a bit the goes back to hide...It has molted once in my care, went from a tiny sling to about a half inch kind of quick for only having it for a few weeks..

Great video as always, you are absolutely right about the moisture. My big lp female got a cheap hygrometer but the only use is that she likes to grip it when she climbs. My lp sling or small juvenile doesn't seem to mind if it dries up a bit. The sling has been bone dry for a few days, no ill effect at all. Yes it looks like the last 1 could actually be an lp. Recently got myself a Klugi sling, gonna be interresting to compare it to a lp. Thanx & take good care of yourself, Tom. 🤗🕷

Mine is an LP and it's growing like a weed, got it in may at .75 inch molted twice since then and it's now 2.75 inch 3 inch, I'm gonna have to rehouse it way sooner than I was planning, but it's cool I love it!

Remember getting my L.klugi at L1 - the smallest spider I ever cared for. Red runner nymph was the same size as it's entire body. On the plus side - two such nymphs were enough to get it to molt.
I just replied to this yet it's not here. UGH. No wonder I'm behind! You'd be amazed at how many folks don't realize that tiny slings can fill up after a couple feeds.
Another great video and THANK YOU for touching on the topic of humidity! A lot of people try to over complicate it and invest in those cheap, inaccurate hygrometers from Pet Smart/PetCo. It doesn’t help that a lot of tarantula care sheets stress the importance of humidity. People end up trying to chase those numbers and end up with a stuffy, soaking wet enclosure. It’s nice to see a tarantula keeper on TH-cam finally touch on that subject and stress the unimportance of those humidity percentages and instead stress the importance of the moisture content in the substrate.
Thanks so much, Sam! Yeah, I answer a LOT of emails and comments from folks trying to achieve some arbitrary "ideal" humidity for their tarantulas, so I figured that I should touch on it again. I will be covering the "humidity" myth in an upcoming video as well, as I think that many folks put their spiders at risk by fussing too much with moisture levels. I literally just had someone ask how to keep his OBT at 70% humidity, as he read that they needed that in a care sheet. Yikes.

I've got three...had 4. Male matured/hooked out, sent on a loan and got munched. :-D What is strange about LPs is that growth rates can vary a LOT. The first two I received, a boy and a girl as microdot slings, grew like freakin' weeds. The male hooked out in about 10 months at nearly 7" DLS. The female was an 1/8" on 4/2016, and just molted at 7.25" a week ago. I detail that because I know the owner of the parent T, and several that she kept after selling the majority of em' off are growing like molasses. A couple other club members who bought from this sac are ALSO seeing slow growth. Perhaps my roach chow is super-awesome or something, but yeah. ( I home brew the chow.) The last two girls, "Cagney and Lacey", were purchased from Kansas State's Insect Zoo (kiffnie)...and they are growing nicely as well. Both molting nearly on que with each other and just past 5"DLS. All of mine have been on bone dry substrate since 2"DLS, and out of the four, two of them bury their dishes, one actually drinks now and again, the other (the male) ignored it.
"Cagney and Lacey." Oh, man...I LOVE the names! I just saw Tyne Daly in something, and I kept calling her Lacey the entire time. haha It truly amazes me how the growth rates of Lasiodora species can vary so wildly, even with folks keeping them in the same conditions. I just heard from a guy in the Philippines who has a slow growing one, and it's 85 degrees and humid there. Another guy was keeping his at 75 or so, and it was 6" in a little over a year. I have on I got as a sling about 6 years ago, and it's only about 5" now. Crazy. I couldn't agree more with you. Maybe it IS your home brewed chow! haha Yeah, I only moisten down a corner in the winter on occasion, and none of mine seem to care. Most of the time, it's bone dry. Still, I've had folks tell me that I'm keeping them wrong because they, "need high humidity", so I had to address it.
Oh man sorry to hear you didn't get the correct species 😱 I saw the jumping spiders at Tanya's website but they are so tiny! I know I would freak out every day if I get one and I have gray hairs now thanks to my Gpulchra xD btw it finally emerged from its burrow after almost three months doing well. I ordered mine from Jamie’s Tarantulas. 3” female. 2 years later she is pushing 6.5” and about to molt. My only T now! Great info man. Keep up the good work👍
I’m making a list of tarantula species and assigning common names to ones that haven’t got them. I think for Lasiodora itabunae I will adopt Brazilian fire hiney as that’s as good a name as any possible and who said you can’t bring humour into it?
I was given an lp free in an order of a couple of ts and quickly turned into one o my favourite ts grows pretty fast great eater and after she got a bit of size shes only used her hide once so great display t.
I have a LP. I got it when it was a match head size. 7 months later it's still a sling around 1.5 to 1.75 inches. I feed it 2 to 3 times a week. What a slow grower.
And it's warmer where your live, right? I'm glad that you said this, as all of mine have not grown as fast as folks say they do. My first I got as a sling 6 years ago, and she's only about 5.5" or so now.
That's what I thought. Many say this species will grow much faster when kept warmer, but you're experiencing the same slower growth rate I am with much warmer temps. Very interesting.
Such big fuzzies! :) Its always so funny to me how Tarantulas always seem to have only two eyes, and they can appear very expressive at that too! So weird haha
I had a sling recently and I eventually traded it off but was disappointing I think in my experience because it seemed always scared of food and very reluctant to grow and eat. I only actually saw it eat once in probably having it a 1.5 months. Was starting to think it was a little runt or something but turns out other people have same problem. I have owned a adult female though and she was great!
It's odd, because folks either report that theirs are growing like weeds, or that they are growing slowly. There seems to be no in between with these guys. Mine all eat well, but they spend a lot of time in premolt. Others have had males mature in just over a year.
Mine molted out into a male with pedipalp bulbs and hooks in 13 months time from a sling bought from Tanya. He is approx 15 months old and matured. THAT was FAST.
The difference in growth rate between specimens of the same species is astounding. I have a male that took 4 years to hook out. If you read the comments, folks either have really fast growing ones or really slllloooowww growing ones. So odd.
My klugi sling's been burried for almost 5 weeks, I finally peeled the tape back to check on it(luckily it went where I wanted it to) and there's a molt! I'll bet these suckers get dug up a lot 😂
Hello, Christophe! Thanks so much! I'm thinking this one may be some sort of hybrid. I compared the molt's lady parts to females of difficilis and parahybana, and it almost looked like a combination of both.
I just dropped a mealworm beetle in with my L. difficilis and it snatched it right away. Next time I time go to feed I will see if the same response occurs. Also I am a pretty big rookie so I can't tell the difference between LPs and L. difficilis.

Man, I love your videos. Very informative and interesting. I've had a G Rosea as my first T, now I have a B Albopilosum, and I'm wanting this one as my next T, but scared to order one as a sling, haven't had any prior experience with slings, as mine I've gotten were just from pet stores and older. sherrie jones I second Euathlus sp. Red as a great starter. Grammostola pulchripes was my personal choice, if you're into something that gets a bit larger.

Tom Moran I think I will. It's between it or the P. chorotos (I can't spell, the mustard baboon). I want a OBT but they have been kinda hard for me to find. I found a few put didn't want anything else from the seller so I skipped out. I can't wait for that new species fear not is getting. The one that looks like a GBB. Really cool
It's amazing, because OBTs were everywhere a few years ago. Now they are a little more difficult to find. Oh, man...that new Aphonopelma sp? It is incredibly gorgeous!!!

From what I've read it seems that, like the red rump Brachypelma species, many of the Lasiodora in the hobby are likely hybrids due to unintentional crossing of two species. I saw a picture a while back showing adult females of LP, difficilis and klugi side by side and they all looked basically identical. I'd say your difficilis is either a hybrid or possibly just an LP, I agree it should have redder setae on the abdomen at that size.
It's funny that you should mention that. I was just comparing the spermatheca of that mystery tarantula to my adult female LP and that of a difficilis, and it doesn't look like either of them. My first thought was hybrid. The spermatheca literally look like they could be a cross between those of the other two species. I wold have to agree with you that this is likely a hybrid.
I currently have 3 Lasiodora … one Lp and two L. klugi. They don't seem to be growing particularly fast I keep my reptile room about 75-80 in the summer and overflow their water dishes on occasion, but they generally stay pretty dry.
I still have to get an L. klugi. Yeah, it is really odd how folks have different growth rates even when kept at the same temps. Folks either say their grow super fast or slowly. So odd. Thanks!
hey Tom , mike here my Difficilis is around 5 to 6 inches across . I have a quick question for you where do the come from and what is habitat they live in the wild I would like to copy it
The difficiliis is a Brazilian species, if I'm not mistaken. They would come from warmer and possibly moist climates. That said, this species is VERY adaptable, so most don't worry about humidity with them.

Hi tom i have 2 difficillis females and 4 L para females and my difficillis look pretty much like your difficillis i think the diffrence between the lp and ld are negligible in my experience

I'm finding my L. klugi to be one of the slowest growers in my collection. Had her for 18 months, and she's about 3 inches now compared to the 1.25 I got her at. Room temps are normally upper 70s, fed twice a week as a sling...just not a fast grower under those conditions.
She eats well but then she sits there for months before a molt, and has small gains. 2 of the molts, she had the same legspan as before (maybe slightly larger carapace.)
The difference in growth rate between different specimens in the Lasiodora genus is astounding. We have folks that keep theirs in the 80s that still report slow growth, and others that keep them in the 70s with males maturing in just over a year. so odd. I've had the same experience with three of my LPs, nicodimus2222. And speaking of premolts, the L. difficilis/likely LP in the video took 9 months in premolt this last time around. I've seen the long premolts as well, even with warmer temps.
Picked up L. Klugi 2 weeks ago. A really small sling - I think about 3mm body length. I was afraid about the feeding as it was the smallest sling I ever got but it can take down a cockroach of similar size no problem.

hi still great to see your videos, would a 30x30x19(cm) enclosure be fine for an adult LP it is glass and similar to an exo terra enclosure with a slide lid , there is a 50x30x24(cm) but my space is a little limited, I also plan to drill some side ventilation and change the mesh top, I think I may of asked before,,,,,,, thank you in advance I now have three LP's and all seem to be growing quite fast..
Hey, Edward! It would work for a smaller one, but I have an 8" female that would be much too large for those dimensions. I find that enclosures that size are good for spiders up to 13 cm or so. I, personally, wouldn't use one for an LP. Hope that helps!
hi thanks for the advise, not going to purchase them, I have now found a company that say they could make me some acrylic enclosures. I have gave them a couple of simple designs to see how well they turn out, 35x35x20cm / 45x45x20cm both 5mm thick that can be used for terrestrial or arboreal, what would be good dimensions for the larger tarantulas many, many thanks again
Hey Tom I have a question about an L. Dificilis. Mine has been holed up since it molted. It ate 1 medium wax worm about 3 weeks ago and hasn't come up at all since. I can see it move around still but I'm slightly worried about it not eating.
@@TomsBigSpiders I haven't been able to get a good look at it haha. I can glimpse it from the bottom. The wax worm was probably a little larger than it's body and abdomen not quite the length of it's legs. I got the sling at .5 inch and it molted once. I'd almost say it's probably an inch now.
@@X177B178 A wax worm that size was probably a pretty good meal for it. It's possible that it filled up on that one, and then retreated due to being full. Slings that size can sometimes fill up after only one big meal. That may be what's happening.
So would you say a lot of Brazilian species are relatively similar, like parahybana vs klugi? My klugi seems to like more moist than dry substrate though. My only concern about that is I live in Colorado, and it's been humid this year, but typically it's not and I have winter to think about too. Do their personalities change during seasons? Sorry, I'm trying to learning as much as I can.
Yes, the care between them is basically identical. If it prefers moisture (and some seem to), you should be able to just moisten down part of the substrate over the drier winter months. Providing a large water dish will also help. As for their personalities changing, I haven't noticed it too much with Lasiodora species. Mine will eat all year round. If it gets too dry, you may find one hovering over a water dish. That's about it.
My Lasiodora Parahybana absolutely hates moist substrate. Whenever I water down one part of the enclosure or change the substrate he sits on the wall until it is bone dry again.
We live in the desert. If I kept an LP here we would have to give them more moisture and probably would have a sling mature in a year as it is always hot here.

Hello, Edward! Thanks so much! Yeah, that enclosure will be a bit cramped after its next molt. A 12 x 12 would work for a while. Also, something 10 gallon sized would work as well.

Hey Tom, got a question for ya. I bought a LP in September and it immediately blocked its burrow and didn't come out until 2 days ago. It has a super tiny abdomen yet doesn't seem interested in food and its fangs have darkened, if it did molt whilst in hiding. Should I try a different feeder or just give it time?
I read that slings have trouble keeping moisture within their exoskeletons unlike adults or juvies so I never let mine dry out. Unfortunately, I have received slings that HAVE dried out because the paper towelling wasn't moist, and thus arrived dead. Makes me very sad. Not a nice way to die. I put my slings in deli cups with lots of holes, a water dish, part moist substrate and then I place the containers into an aquarium with gravel and some water and a loose lid. They all seemed to have liked that and lived without the problem of mould etc. in their containers.

i found that when i used cork bark hides the corkbark would begin to mold which is not good. so i replaced the corkbark with a black plastic plant pot which i cut in half and placed into the substrate. any recommendations to prevent the molt. i heated the corkbark to kill all bacterias and kept the temperatue around 80 degrees with 65-70 degrees of humidity
I've had a couple issues with mold on cork bark over the years, but overall it's worked out for me. Usually, it seems to come from the substrate. How is the ventilation? The few times I've had the issue, it was in moist enclosures.
It honestly depends on the specimens. They get quite big, and the hairs they kick can be nasty. I've had five, and only one would have probably tolerated handling.
Is it my imagination or do the juvenile LP females look really leggy compared to other NW terrestrials? I bought an LP that's supposedly female but having had it a few days now, I'm not sure. 🤔
Hi Tom I've got 2 LP slings I've had them a year when I 1st had them they were absolutely tiny microscopic in the year that I've had them they've molted 4 or 5 times each but when they molt they hardly put any size on I'd say that there about 3cm now and like I say I've had them a year I've been told that once they hit the inch mark that they put on more size with each molt how fast did yours grow I've kept them at room temperature between 20c too 22c so I dnt no why there growing so slowly lol.
Hi, Wayne! A lot of people report that theirs grow very quickly, but mine have all grown slowly. Once they hit 1", they DID grow much more quickly overall. Mine were also kept in that temperature range, which may be why we are experiencing slower growth rates.
My LP sling doesnt burrow at all really. It doesnt eat very well neither, but it does have a very chunky, dark abdomen so maybe premolt? Ive had mine nearly a month now and still hasnt eaten and I have tired dead and alive food and its just not having it. I havent managed to feed it whilst it has been in my home. It is very curious about everything though which I really like, if I open the box it will come say hi but no threats or running away. I hope it eats soon because I love this little guy and I hate worrying about my animals.
So sorry for the delay, Jodie! How long have you had it? Sometimes it can take them a little while to settle in. And it's certainly possible that it's in premolt, which is why it's not eating.
Well I've had it almost a month now and I was correct with assuming premolt! I was so excited when I saw it. That was on the 26th of last month but still hasn't eaten.
Hello tom, can you help me confirm if my lasiodora klugi is indeed a legit klugi? Im having a doubt because when i compared it side by side with my parahybana, my parahybana is darker.
Hi, Wayne! Perhaps your L. klugi is a L. itabunae? ;) Hahaha Just kidding! I'll check out the spermatheca the next time it molts. The Lasiodora species are often mixed up.

I picked this species up on a whim and she is quicky becoming one of my favorites. I am also in love with my Hapalopus sp. Columbia from fear not. I believe that you may have actually produced it! I rarely comment in TH-cam but I wanted to say that your website and your videos have been a huge inspiration for me not only to overcome my huge fear of spiders but also to grow a collection of amazing critters.
They are such cool spiders, and for many of us, they are our first "giants".

Been out of the hobby for almost 10 years, until my lady wanted her first T, we planned a trip to a local expo for a B. albopilosum (her chosen beginner species) and I couldn't resist also picking up a dirt cheap 1/4" LP sling and I love it, I raised a 7" female from a sling before I had to re-home my collection (I moved across country, all 14 spiders found homes). Thanks for the brush up lesson, my little one is doing very well and Ive been pursuing your videos contemplating what to get next...haha the addiction begins again. Keep up the great work, love your passion and your videos.

I have the L. parahybana and it does indeed grow fast. I recently picked up a Lasiodora itabunae and it was labeled as common name: "Brazilian itabuia scarlet." I love the name Fire Hiney (what someone else mentioned)! LP doesn't burrow and LI has burrowed a little, but they are both great eaters! I gave them hides and can't wait to see them grow even bigger. Thank you for the husbandry video!
I've got one LP that grew fairly fast and three slow growers. It seems that they are all over the place in terms of growth rates. So odd. Hahaha. Yeah, when I first got mine, there wasn't a standard common name for them. I made up the "fire Hiney". haha Thanks again!
i have 3 of the Lp's i have raised from slings. i love them. mine have never filled the water dishes. they were on the dry sub after the sling stage and they really grew quick. if people out there don't have one . get one you will love them. thanks Tom.

I have a Lasiodora difficilis and I love it. It just molted the other day and it has a burrow but has a widow that i see it all the time..Thanks for all you info. Love your channel I learn alot.... I moisten the substrate twice a week and as soon as start spritzing it comes out walks around a bit the goes back to hide...It has molted once in my care, went from a tiny sling to about a half inch kind of quick for only having it for a few weeks..

Great video as always, you are absolutely right about the moisture. My big lp female got a cheap hygrometer but the only use is that she likes to grip it when she climbs. My lp sling or small juvenile doesn't seem to mind if it dries up a bit. The sling has been bone dry for a few days, no ill effect at all. Yes it looks like the last 1 could actually be an lp. Recently got myself a Klugi sling, gonna be interresting to compare it to a lp. Thanx & take good care of yourself, Tom. 🤗🕷

Mine is an LP and it's growing like a weed, got it in may at .75 inch molted twice since then and it's now 2.75 inch 3 inch, I'm gonna have to rehouse it way sooner than I was planning, but it's cool I love it!

Remember getting my L.klugi at L1 - the smallest spider I ever cared for.
Red runner nymph was the same size as it's entire body.
On the plus side - two such nymphs were enough to get it to molt.
I just replied to this yet it's not here. UGH. No wonder I'm behind! You'd be amazed at how many folks don't realize that tiny slings can fill up after a couple feeds.

Another great video and THANK YOU for touching on the topic of humidity! A lot of people try to over complicate it and invest in those cheap, inaccurate hygrometers from Pet Smart/PetCo. It doesn’t help that a lot of tarantula care sheets stress the importance of humidity. People end up trying to chase those numbers and end up with a stuffy, soaking wet enclosure. It’s nice to see a tarantula keeper on TH-cam finally touch on that subject and stress the unimportance of those humidity percentages and instead stress the importance of the moisture content in the substrate.
Thanks so much, Sam! Yeah, I answer a LOT of emails and comments from folks trying to achieve some arbitrary "ideal" humidity for their tarantulas, so I figured that I should touch on it again. I will be covering the "humidity" myth in an upcoming video as well, as I think that many folks put their spiders at risk by fussing too much with moisture levels. I literally just had someone ask how to keep his OBT at 70% humidity, as he read that they needed that in a care sheet. Yikes.
Tom Moran Yikes really does sum up keeping an OBT at 70% humidity, you gotta wonder where these care sheets come up with these oddly specific humidity numbers haha! I look forward to that video, definitely something I’ll have to bookmark on my computer for the next time someone asks me about it!

I've got three...had 4. Male matured/hooked out, sent on a loan and got munched. :-D What is strange about LPs is that growth rates can vary a LOT. The first two I received, a boy and a girl as microdot slings, grew like freakin' weeds. The male hooked out in about 10 months at nearly 7" DLS. The female was an 1/8" on 4/2016, and just molted at 7.25" a week ago. I detail that because I know the owner of the parent T, and several that she kept after selling the majority of em' off are growing like molasses. A couple other club members who bought from this sac are ALSO seeing slow growth. Perhaps my roach chow is super-awesome or something, but yeah. ( I home brew the chow.)
The last two girls, "Cagney and Lacey", were purchased from Kansas State's Insect Zoo (kiffnie)...and they are growing nicely as well. Both molting nearly on que with each other and just past 5"DLS.
All of mine have been on bone dry substrate since 2"DLS, and out of the four, two of them bury their dishes, one actually drinks now and again, the other (the male) ignored it.
"Cagney and Lacey." Oh, man...I LOVE the names! I just saw Tyne Daly in something, and I kept calling her Lacey the entire time. haha
It truly amazes me how the growth rates of Lasiodora species can vary so wildly, even with folks keeping them in the same conditions. I just heard from a guy in the Philippines who has a slow growing one, and it's 85 degrees and humid there. Another guy was keeping his at 75 or so, and it was 6" in a little over a year. I have on I got as a sling about 6 years ago, and it's only about 5" now. Crazy. I couldn't agree more with you.

Yeah, I only moisten down a corner in the winter on occasion, and none of mine seem to care. Most of the time, it's bone dry. Still, I've had folks tell me that I'm keeping them wrong because they, "need high humidity", so I had to address it.
Oh man sorry to hear you didn't get the correct species 😱 I saw the jumping spiders at Tanya's website but they are so tiny! I know I would freak out every day if I get one and I have gray hairs now thanks to my Gpulchra xD btw it finally emerged from its burrow after almost three months doing well. I’m making a list of tarantula species and assigning common names to ones that haven’t got them. I think for Lasiodora itabunae I will adopt Brazilian fire hiney as that’s as good a name as any possible and who said you can’t bring humour into it?
I was given an lp free in an order of a couple of ts and quickly turned into one o my favourite ts grows pretty fast great eater and after she got a bit of size shes only used her hide once so great display t.

I have a LP. I got it when it was a match head size. 7 months later it's still a sling around 1.5 to 1.75 inches. I feed it 2 to 3 times a week. What a slow grower.
And it's warmer where your live, right? I'm glad that you said this, as all of mine have not grown as fast as folks say they do. My first I got as a sling 6 years ago, and she's only about 5.5" or so now.
Tom Moran yeah, I live in the Philippines. Temperature mostly around 79 F to 85 F. Humidity is also high.
That's what I thought. Many say this species will grow much faster when kept warmer, but you're experiencing the same slower growth rate I am with much warmer temps. Very interesting.
Tom Moran yeah. I just hope it's a female for that slow growth. I'm gonna get it's gender in 1 or 2 more molts.

I had a sling recently and I eventually traded it off but was disappointing I think in my experience because it seemed always scared of food and very reluctant to grow and eat. I only actually saw it eat once in probably having it a 1.5 months. Was starting to think it was a little runt or something but turns out other people have same problem. I have owned a adult female though and she was great!
It's odd, because folks either report that theirs are growing like weeds, or that they are growing slowly. There seems to be no in between with these guys. Mine all eat well, but they spend a lot of time in premolt. Others have had males mature in just over a year.
Mine molted out into a male with pedipalp bulbs and hooks in 13 months time from a sling bought from Tanya. He is approx 15 months old and matured. THAT was FAST.
The difference in growth rate between specimens of the same species is astounding. I have a male that took 4 years to hook out. If you read the comments, folks either have really fast growing ones or really slllloooowww growing ones. So odd.

Hello, Christophe! Thanks so much! I'm thinking this one may be some sort of hybrid. I compared the molt's lady parts to females of difficilis and parahybana, and it almost looked like a combination of both.
I just dropped a mealworm beetle in with my L. difficilis and it snatched it right away. Next time I time go to feed I will see if the same response occurs. Also I am a pretty big rookie so I can't tell the difference between LPs and L. difficilis.
Mine just looks so much like my L. parahybanas that I'm not convinced that it's an L. difficilis. Sounds like yours is a good eater!

From what I've read it seems that, like the red rump Brachypelma species, many of the Lasiodora in the hobby are likely hybrids due to unintentional crossing of two species. I saw a picture a while back showing adult females of LP, difficilis and klugi side by side and they all looked basically identical. I'd say your difficilis is either a hybrid or possibly just an LP, I agree it should have redder setae on the abdomen at that size.
It's funny that you should mention that. I was just comparing the spermatheca of that mystery tarantula to my adult female LP and that of a difficilis, and it doesn't look like either of them. My first thought was hybrid. The spermatheca literally look like they could be a cross between those of the other two species. I wold have to agree with you that this is likely a hybrid.
I currently have 3 Lasiodora … one Lp and two L. klugi. They don't seem to be growing particularly fast I keep my reptile room about 75-80 in the summer and overflow their water dishes on occasion, but they generally stay pretty dry.
I still have to get an L. klugi. Yeah, it is really odd how folks have different growth rates even when kept at the same temps. Folks either say their grow super fast or slowly. So odd. Thanks!
hey Tom , mike here my Difficilis is around 5 to 6 inches across . I have a quick question for you where do the come from and what is habitat they live in the wild I would like to copy it
The difficiliis is a Brazilian species, if I'm not mistaken. They would come from warmer and possibly moist climates. That said, this species is VERY adaptable, so most don't worry about humidity with them.

@@mikesipes5305 Oh, I'm not trying to dissuade you at all! I'm just saying that there is a lot out there about their need for high humidity, and it's not something you have to worry about. A gorgeous setup with live plants and such would be amazing! Sorry for the misunderstanding. :)

Hi tom i have 2 difficillis females and 4 L para females and my difficillis look pretty much like your difficillis i think the diffrence between the lp and ld are negligible in my experience

I compared the "mystery spider" to my LP molt this morning, and it definitely didn't match. I then compared it to pics of L. difficilis molts, and no go there either. I'm thinking perhaps hybrid...

I'm finding my L. klugi to be one of the slowest growers in my collection. Had her for 18 months, and she's about 3 inches now compared to the 1.25 I got her at. Room temps are normally upper 70s, fed twice a week as a sling...just not a fast grower under those conditions.
nicodimus2222 really?? My L. Klugi os one of my best e as ters and fastest growers.
She eats well but then she sits there for months before a molt, and has small gains. 2 of the molts, she had the same legspan as before (maybe slightly larger carapace.)

The difference in growth rate between different specimens in the Lasiodora genus is astounding. We have folks that keep theirs in the 80s that still report slow growth, and others that keep them in the 70s with males maturing in just over a year. so odd. I've had the same experience with three of my LPs, nicodimus2222. And speaking of premolts, the L. difficilis/likely LP in the video took 9 months in premolt this last time around. I've seen the long premolts as well, even with warmer temps.

A really small sling - I think about 3mm body length.
I was afraid about the feeding as it was the smallest sling I ever got but it can take down a cockroach of similar size no problem.

hi still great to see your videos, would a 30x30x19(cm) enclosure be fine for an adult LP it is glass and similar to an exo terra enclosure with a slide lid , there is a 50x30x24(cm) but my space is a little limited, I also plan to drill some side ventilation and change the mesh top, I think I may of asked before,,,,,,, thank you in advance I now have three LP's and all seem to be growing quite fast..
Hey, Edward! It would work for a smaller one, but I have an 8" female that would be much too large for those dimensions. I find that enclosures that size are good for spiders up to 13 cm or so. I, personally, wouldn't use one for an LP. Hope that helps!
hi thanks for the advise, not going to purchase them, I have now found a company that say they could make me some acrylic enclosures. I have gave them a couple of simple designs to see how well they turn out, 35x35x20cm / 45x45x20cm both 5mm thick that can be used for terrestrial or arboreal, what would be good dimensions for the larger tarantulas many, many thanks again
Hey Tom I have a question about an L. Dificilis. Mine has been holed up since it molted. It ate 1 medium wax worm about 3 weeks ago and hasn't come up at all since. I can see it move around still but I'm slightly worried about it not eating.

@@TomsBigSpiders I haven't been able to get a good look at it haha. I can glimpse it from the bottom. The wax worm was probably a little larger than it's body and abdomen not quite the length of it's legs. I got the sling at .5 inch and it molted once. I'd almost say it's probably an inch now.
@@X177B178 A wax worm that size was probably a pretty good meal for it. It's possible that it filled up on that one, and then retreated due to being full. Slings that size can sometimes fill up after only one big meal. That may be what's happening.

So would you say a lot of Brazilian species are relatively similar, like parahybana vs klugi? My klugi seems to like more moist than dry substrate though. My only concern about that is I live in Colorado, and it's been humid this year, but typically it's not and I have winter to think about too. Do their personalities change during seasons? Sorry, I'm trying to learning as much as I can.
Yes, the care between them is basically identical. If it prefers moisture (and some seem to), you should be able to just moisten down part of the substrate over the drier winter months. Providing a large water dish will also help. As for their personalities changing, I haven't noticed it too much with Lasiodora species. Mine will eat all year round. If it gets too dry, you may find one hovering over a water dish. That's about it.
My Lasiodora Parahybana absolutely hates moist substrate. Whenever I water down one part of the enclosure or change the substrate he sits on the wall until it is bone dry again.
Mine don't seem to care either way. Yeah, these guys seem to do perfectly fine dry!

We live in the desert. If I kept an LP here we would have to give them more moisture and probably would have a sling mature in a year as it is always hot here.

Hello, Edward! Thanks so much! Yeah, that enclosure will be a bit cramped after its next molt. A 12 x 12 would work for a while. Also, something 10 gallon sized would work as well.

Hey Tom, got a question for ya. I bought a LP in September and it immediately blocked its burrow and didn't come out until 2 days ago. It has a super tiny abdomen yet doesn't seem interested in food and its fangs have darkened, if it did molt whilst in hiding. Should I try a different feeder or just give it time?
I read that slings have trouble keeping moisture within their exoskeletons unlike adults or juvies so I never let mine dry out. Unfortunately, I have received slings that HAVE dried out because the paper towelling wasn't moist, and thus arrived dead. Makes me very sad. Not a nice way to die. I put my slings in deli cups with lots of holes, a water dish, part moist substrate and then I place the containers into an aquarium with gravel and some water and a loose lid. They all seemed to have liked that and lived without the problem of mould etc. in their containers.

i found that when i used cork bark hides the corkbark would begin to mold which is not good. so i replaced the corkbark with a black plastic plant pot which i cut in half and placed into the substrate. any recommendations to prevent the molt. i heated the corkbark to kill all bacterias and kept the temperatue around 80 degrees with 65-70 degrees of humidity
I've had a couple issues with mold on cork bark over the years, but overall it's worked out for me. Usually, it seems to come from the substrate. How is the ventilation? The few times I've had the issue, it was in moist enclosures.
This will be my first tarantula, are they good with handling?
It honestly depends on the specimens. They get quite big, and the hairs they kick can be nasty. I've had five, and only one would have probably tolerated handling.

Is it my imagination or do the juvenile LP females look really leggy compared to other NW terrestrials? I bought an LP that's supposedly female but having had it a few days now, I'm not sure. 🤔

Hi Tom I've got 2 LP slings I've had them a year when I 1st had them they were absolutely tiny microscopic in the year that I've had them they've molted 4 or 5 times each but when they molt they hardly put any size on I'd say that there about 3cm now and like I say I've had them a year I've been told that once they hit the inch mark that they put on more size with each molt how fast did yours grow I've kept them at room temperature between 20c too 22c so I dnt no why there growing so slowly lol.
Hi, Wayne! A lot of people report that theirs grow very quickly, but mine have all grown slowly. Once they hit 1", they DID grow much more quickly overall. Mine were also kept in that temperature range, which may be why we are experiencing slower growth rates.
My LP sling doesnt burrow at all really. It doesnt eat very well neither, but it does have a very chunky, dark abdomen so maybe premolt? Ive had mine nearly a month now and still hasnt eaten and I have tired dead and alive food and its just not having it. I havent managed to feed it whilst it has been in my home. It is very curious about everything though which I really like, if I open the box it will come say hi but no threats or running away. I hope it eats soon because I love this little guy and I hate worrying about my animals.
So sorry for the delay, Jodie! How long have you had it? Sometimes it can take them a little while to settle in. And it's certainly possible that it's in premolt, which is why it's not eating.
Well I've had it almost a month now and I was correct with assuming premolt! I was so excited when I saw it. That was on the 26th of last month but still hasn't eaten.

Hello tom, can you help me confirm if my lasiodora klugi is indeed a legit klugi? Im having a doubt because when i compared it side by side with my parahybana, my parahybana is darker.
I'm still trying to figure out if my L. itabunae is a real itabunae. haha If you have doubts, the best way is to examine the spermathaeca.
