I've actually done these kinds of auditions with no voice at all doing the "reader" parts, and still gotten call backs. The reason is that I've found that the reader's voice can often be distracting, so I just memorize the other lines and play them in my head. That way casting can focus on me and not someone else.

I have used this hack but found it tough to get the timing right (saying my lines in my head) when there are multiple or long lines. Instead, I record all the lines including mine, then go back over the audio editing out my lines. You can do this in Mac’s Voice Memos, clicking edit and then click replace for the sections you want out. Other apps like Photo Booth can probably do this too but I don’t see it as easily as with Voice Memo. Once I have my audio track ready I can run that at same time as I’m doing my self tape and the timing is much better than when I’ve said the lines in my head. Little more work but avoids overlapping dialog.

When you have a lot of dialog, it's true, it's better to have a reader. However you don't need multiple readers, you can just use one to read multiple characters.
This is a fabulous help. What if the reader you need is the opposite sex - can you hook it together with zoom of someone willing to read the other lines.?
Great question. Yes it's ok to have a reader of the opposite sex. When there were more "in the room" auditions they would only have one reader for male and female.
My computer is down so I use a "handy dandy" pocket recorder & do the same thing. I've heard you can tape ZOOM meetings if you can get someone quickly that way. I haven't had a chance to try that in my one yet. Not quite sure HOW it could be
I do the same thing on my android, leaving an extra 2-3 seconds for each of my lines (b/c I tend to read them faster in my head than I say them), and that allows for any pauses or tweaks w/o stepping on the next line of pre-recorded dialogue. Then, in Movie Maker, I upload the video and also overlay/sync the audio file from the phone (must be exact for this to work, but super simple to do by dragging the audio track's slider) on top of the video's audio, allowing me to adjust the reader's level below mine and also it gets rid of the "tin can" sound of the recorded lines being played back on my phone during the audition.
If I'm reading/recording the other person's lines I just read them. Make sure you give yourself enough time to answer in between. Does that answer your question? Thanks for watching.
I just re-watched your self tape without a reader. The program you mention is that only for a Apple, I have a pc. Also have you thought about putting together actors for readers.
Thanks for watching Bob. Yes the program was an apple thing. The PC version is Instant Photo Booth and it says you can turn your Windows 10 device into a photo booth kiosk. As a Universal Windows Platform app, Instant Photo Booth will run on any Windows 10 device, from the mobile device in your hand, to your tablet, to your PC, to your Xbox.
I've heard there is Jessica. I'll have to check to make sure it's good. Thanks for the question, and thanks for watching! Also, Here are some tools to help you with your Self-Tape auditions. The off camera voice sounded different in the final cut, which definitely makes a difference. What app did you use to change the recorded voice? Thanks
Hi Dan! Really great video and tip. Thank you! Also, would you mind telling me what that tripod phone stand that is that you are using in this video? I desperately need a new/better one and will only be needing one to record self tapes with my smart phone. If you have a link to it too that would be a awesome. Thank you so much!
I just use a regular light stand with a quarter inch threaded screw top. They are about $25 on Amazon. From there I attached my cell phone holder. I've had mine for so long, I don't really remember where I bought it.
@@ActingCareerExpert Oh you are so welcome - I have something coming up and have the exact same problem - the script is big - 3 scenes and a lot of dialogue so I may have to read the script whilst doing the tape - it's got t be in Monday. I followed your instructions and BOOM it worked. You really are very good. Good luck with every, and let me know how you get on. Our Mr Craig has been your side getting his Walk Of Fame! Star I used to be part of BAFTA which is the equivalent to the Academy Awards but left when my father died as it was a bit too much, al the voting etc. but I loved it. I'm still very much in the media though. Keep in touch. Many blessings - Psyche 🙋🏽♀️🌹
I haven't done this either way but what about using the linelearner app? You can accomplish the same thing and even pitch your voice up or down for the reader's part. Would that work?
Dan Warner, 👌You know what you're talking about. 👏 Thanks for the wonderful advice. I hate recording the actors lines when I can't get a reader in time but, I think the next time I'm in a bind I'll use your steps except I think I'll record it on my iPhone instead of using Photo Booth from my laptop.
hey Dan, so if you have an action while delivering your dialogue should you perform it? Also, I noticed slight shadow behind you. Can I get away with that?
It depends on what kind of action and if it can be done in the confines of your self-tape setup. Also, the slight shadow is ok, most of mine is directly behind me, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Dan - were you able to find out what the PC equivalent of PhotoBooth is? I've done something similar to what you did using a digital audio recorder. The problem is that you have to say the lines in the time you allotted in the silence and that may be too long or too short so you end up thinking more about the timing issue than your character and scene you're doing. So you can't do the scene a different way where your lines may take more time, stepping on the recorded lines, or taking less time, leaving an odd gap. This kind of thing, esp in a time crunch like you mentioned is nerve wracking so I typically end up just doing my lines only and not the other lines. With that kind of timeframe there just isn't time to fiddle and fuss with the timing issue. If you or anyone here have found out how to solve the issue with the timing and make that easier let me know.
You're exactly right Warren, it's tough when you want to give the scene more air and do different takes. I still think that doing your lines without the other lines is not really the way to go. I've been told by casting directors that they don't like it at all. Facebook has a group that is all readers and people needing readers. In the meantime, here's what I found for PC's alternativeto.net/software/photo-booth-for-windows-7/ Hope that helps.

The only drawback that I see is that you are always at the mercy of the time you are restricted in giving your responses because all beats are pre-set. There wont be any added dramatic pauses, organic moments or pleasant surprises.
This is only if you're desperate to get a submission in and don't have a reader. Also, if you find a surprise or an organic moment, you can re-record it and do it again. It's just a band-aid really.
I've done this but just giving a beat between each line so I can pause it, keeping my finger over the pause/play button so I have as much time as I need. It is really difficult to do, to coordinate yourself and try and be present in your intension.

If you're using your phone to record yourself, you can't use it for the other voices. However, if you're using another device like a laptop, you can record your voice on your phone with your "voice memos" app or any other recording apps you have. A lot of them are free. As far as a female voice goes, you don't need to change it up. You can do both. When we were auditioning "in the room" there was only one reader, and they read opposite us for any gender that the script called for.
What’s your opinion on doing this hack when the reader is the opposite sex from you? Would you read it in your voice? Or would you try to sound like the opposite sex? 🤔
Great question Lori. When we were doing auditions in the room you only had either a male or female reader, so I don’t think it matters too much. I would alter my voice a bit but I wouldn’t alter it too much. You don’t want to to sound too cartoonish.
@@ActingCareerExpert Thanks Dan, that’s what I was thinking but you never know if the casting directors are getting pickier because they think we have more resources available. Cheers! 😁
@@loriashtonzondag328 I actually think that the casting people know that we don't have an instant reader. On the other hand, they do feel that we've been doing this for over a year now, so we should get it together. They're still receiving a lot of garbage submissions for sure. This is a good time to step up our game to book more jobs.

When you have a lot of dialog, it's true, it's better to have a reader. However you don't need multiple readers, you can just use one to read multiple characters.
Genius
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for sharing this!! Keep on rocking those auditions!
Thank you! You too!
Fantastic
Thank you! Cheers!
This is a fabulous help. What if the reader you need is the opposite sex - can you hook it together with zoom of someone willing to read the other lines.?
Great question. Yes it's ok to have a reader of the opposite sex. When there were more "in the room" auditions they would only have one reader for male and female.
Thank you..that will work for me. Thank you for your reply
@@SUNSHINEANDPALMTREES Of course! Thanks for watching.
My computer is down so I use a "handy dandy" pocket recorder & do the same thing.
I've heard you can tape ZOOM meetings if you can get someone quickly that way. I haven't had a chance to try that in my one yet. Not quite sure HOW it could be
Be edited. Even with Movie Maker.
That’s excellent! We have to think on our feet these days for sure!
This is so great! I wish I’d discovered this video sooner lol.
Glad it was helpful Tiana. Thanks for watching.

Thanks so much for this!
You’re welcome Chris. Glad it helped 👍🏼
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for sharing this.
Glad it was helpful Tiffany! Thanks for watching.
That's great Brett! We have to all figure this out, and it sounds like you're on the right path. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the info. I have actually done this using a voice recorder - but it sounds scratchy. I have a Mac Laptop so it’ll be cool to use it.
Yeah, it’s a pretty good workaround. Thanks Will.
You just saved my life this was very informative can’t wait to try this on my own. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful Aura! Thanks for watching.
Question - for a self tape with a quick deadline, do you memorize ALL the lines as well (if there are tons of lines)? or simply read them off?
Thank you. This was very helpful 👌
Thanks Arma. Glad it was helpful!
Great, fast 💨 solution Dan. Love the Hack “tip” when in a bind for a last minute reader. I’ll definitely keep this in mind. Thanks!
Take care, Cindy
Yeah, it’s great in a pinch. Thanks Cindy 👍🏼
This is such a great tip!
Is there an app out there that can do that? Let me know which one you would recommend!
I've heard there is Jessica. I'll have to check to make sure it's good.
Thanks for the question, and thanks for watching!

Thank you so much for this video! You literally saved me!
Glad I could help Maria! Thanks for watching
The off camera voice sounded different in the final cut, which definitely makes a difference. What app did you use to change the recorded voice? Thanks
I just changed my voice when I recorded the other actors and it sounded different in the final edit. 👍🏼
Do you always film with your phone screen side forward? Does it affect the quality of the video?
I usually do so I can use myself as an eyeline. It does not affect the quality. Great question! Thanks for watching.
I love you!!
Thanks :)
Brilliant - Psyche aka Psyche Thompson UK
Thanks so much Psyche!
I've not used that yet, but I'll check it out. It sounds like it would work fine. Thanks!
Dan Warner,
👌You know what you're talking about. 👏 Thanks for the wonderful advice. I hate recording the actors lines when I can't get a reader in time but, I think the next time I'm in a bind I'll use your steps except I think I'll record it on my iPhone instead of using Photo Booth from my laptop.
Thanks so much Julian. Yeah, your iPhone would work great too. 👍🏼 keep me posted on your progress.
hey Dan, so if you have an action while delivering your dialogue should you perform it? Also, I noticed slight shadow behind you. Can I get away with that?
It depends on what kind of action and if it can be done in the confines of your self-tape setup. Also, the slight shadow is ok, most of mine is directly behind me, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
This was SO SO helpful!! will be using your tip! and just subbed :) thank you so much!! 🙏
perfect!!!!!!
Thank you Channel! Thanks for watching.
Is there no app for that ?
It will be much easier
I believe there is. I will look into it.
How can you do this with an IPhone and know Mac?
Not sure Kenny, as I haven't done it on my phone. I'll look into it. Thanks for watching.
Hi Dan. I need to do an Audition today 10/18. I have PC, can I use Photobooth? pls help Thx so much
I think there's an app called Sparkbooth for PC. I've not tried it before, but that's what I've been told. Let me know how it goes Deborah!
Thx so much Dan for quick response! I have connected with Reader in meantime on Actors Trade app first time doing this wish me luck
In the meantime, here's what I found for PC's
alternativeto.net/software/photo-booth-for-windows-7/
Hope that helps.

The only drawback that I see is that you are always at the mercy of the time you are restricted in giving your responses because all beats are pre-set. There wont be any added dramatic pauses, organic moments or pleasant surprises.
That's a great point... But in a pinch, this is a great work around
What kind of tripod are you using in this?
I just use a regular light stand with a quarter inch threaded screw top. They are about $25 on Amazon. From there I attached my cell phone holder.
So you recorded the other characters with your phone and taped your audition with your laptop, or the other way around?
Other way around. Recorded with my phone. Playback with the laptop.
I do this on Windows with Audacity
Excellent! Thanks.
Use to rehearse too
Thanks for watching.
What if I don’t have a selfie Stick?
Why do you need a selfie Stick?
I have a windows pc 11
Google the equivalent of photo booth on a Mac. I'm sure they have something like it.
actually those are the best kind of friends... help me RIGHT NOW.. and they do ;-)
It is nice to have those kind of friends for sure 👍🏼
Cool hack that ive tried. But then i found We Audition and stick with that every time.
Thanks Victor! I’ll have to check out We Audition for sure 👍🏽

Yup!!!!! Lol that’s right.
Thanks for watching Colin.
It would be great to have an AI text to speech with someone else's voice so it's not obviously the actor in the self tape's voice.
That would be great! Let me know if you ever find something like that! Thanks for watching.
Use the photobooth to do practice auditions. I use myself as respond. I purpose do face expressions
Excellent!
Thanks for watching.
I done an audition under 10 Min
Excellent!
How can you do this on your iPhone & what about if the other character is a female… but your a male & need a females voice.
Don't you do Introduce yourself?
Yes I always do.
