- How to Analyze a Script for an Audition | Los Angeles Acting Tips
It’s been a minute, but I’m back with more Los Angeles Acting advice. This time I’m breaking down a script from a project that I went on to book. I show you how I broke down the audition script AND the self-tape that got me the callback and eventually the part.
Special thanks to Kathi and Kristin for letting me use their breakdown and audition sides. Follow: @manifestingdestinyseries for more information on the Manifesting Destiny Web Series!

Something one of my theatre teachers once said is that not only is the audience hearing you say your line for the first time, but your character is also saying the line for the first time. So slow down, and really take in the impact of your words as you're saying them, even if you've rehearsed it a thousand times before.
@Jimbo Jones I think picking up your cues is important of course, but one of the things that makes our characters interesting to an audience is when they can see them making discoveries. Feeling that a character is going through the realization of something or going through a thought process to get to a decision or emotional state is much more relatable and exciting.
Great concept.
Thanks for this. 👍🏾
Will, you are a fantastic communicator. Your sincerity and generosity show in your videos. There are "experts" (managers, agents, CDs) out there with TH-cam channels and paid subscription services with more years in the business but don't come across as articulate or knowledgeable as you do. Keep up the good work and best of luck in your career!
BeauBo M thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoy it.
@@WillyDubz TRUTH!
This was super helpful since i'm trying to prepare for two auditions I have!!! LOVE how in detail you talk about all things acting on your channel!
Please do not stop making these kinds of videos. They so specific and transparent, and the docs you attach are amazing as well.
Hey Will! Thanks for making this kind of video! I'm a Brazilian actress and I'm studying English, and preparing myself to take an acting course in LA one day. You're helping me a lot.
Great video, I love breaking down scripts. Always fun getting to play around with the story and figuring out your character. Congrats on the part!
Daylin Marie it is a fun puzzle. Makes me wish I paid more attention in English class hahaha.
Thank you!
Yo, is there a source(s) where one could find scripts to breakdown like this? I'm just stabbing in the dark on google to find anything at this point.
this is content that I would pay for if I knew how detailed and clear you were going to be, seriously great, thank you!
Congrats! I didn’t see how you could be Jareth until you acted it out. I actually laughed out loud.
Keep up the good work!
Wil H Hey thanks man!
@@WillyDubz I laughed too. At the part where he interrupted you after you asked how to spell depressing lol, where he said GIVE ME THAT. Did you get the role? Do you actually audition online? Was it a friend who read back to you?
I just finished to watch almost all of your videos and I’m amazed of your professionalism and approach. We need more videos please continue to make it
YESSS!! YOU’VE RETURNED WITH ACTING VIDEOS!! 😂😂.
I'm so happy I found your channel and so glad you're gaining popularity!
Me too!! Im studying acting in Peru and this video is more complet than the script analysis class I had on my acting school😂😂
every time I get an audition, it seems that I always come back watching this video or going over the google doc... thanks Will for the help :)
Cheyenne Giordani 🥰
I've watched this video for more than ten times. It's very helpful please do more videos on your acting processes.
I took a play analysis course in University that was way too time consuming and it was also costly. This was much more informative, practical, fun, and it was all under 17 minutes. Again, I want to reiterate how much I enjoy watching this channel. I really appreciate when actors help other actors.
Thanks again and best of luck with your career. 😄
Love your hotel lobby background music. Usually I just HATE music in the background of instructional videos. What I love most though is that fact that you talk fast and STAY ON TRACK. Thank you
Im literally shook.
U ACTED SO GOOD WHAT
Thanks 🥰
Wow... Finally new video... Loved it :)
Maaaaaan I’m so glad I came across ur channel…u really break down & explain the art of being an actor very well…I’m gonna support this channel anyway I can…
seeing you read the lines normally and break them down then in character is amazing great video great tips!
Love this video. Please do more with script breakdowns. For ex commercials, how to know when to inflect or deflect, which tone to use
Awesome. Awesome! I love this. Your markups, your commentary, and what you pick up on and pay attention to is edifying and affirming--especially for a screenwriter who sees characterization as the driver of story and punctuation as an art.
Thanks man. This gave me a great tool I've been missing! The open to interpretation lines stump me, but this should be a giant help going forward when facing them and understanding the script.
Seriously, thank you! You really take the time to teach us and provide documents and notes for us free of charge. Your a great TH-camr and actor :)
This content is awesome Will! Thank you for going into such detail and for showing us your final result. I have just started an acting course, and great content like yours get me more excited in going forward with acting!
I havent audition at all since 2021. I did have a small part in a movie last year and one coming up next summer. Watching this was refreshing. Thank you
You are doing the lord's work my man. This was amazing to watch. Breaking the script down like that, the emphasis on punctuation and how to use that was amazing. Esp when you recognized that there wasn't any punctuation on the word 'Awesome' and that means that Jareth was kinda being sarcastic there.
Then you put yourself out there and acted it out. Subscribed !
Thank you so much for making this video. As an actor who is just getting on board you explained the break very well that I was looking for. From beginning to end I was engaged and it helped me get a better understanding of how to prepare for a auction while ready the script. You definitely touched a lot of the questions, comments and concerns I wanted answered but didn’t know how to ask or where to get the answer from. I’ve heard make it “believable” so many times but didn’t understand how until you showed me how to break it down and really get into the character as you did in your self tape. It helped me get out of my head. So thank you for showing that. You’ve helped this actor get his confidence up.
Keleyn Clark thanks for watching and working on your craft!
Re-reading this comment! It’s so nice of you to say that. Thank you!
Love this! It was super informative to see you take a breakdown from A to Z in your own process. Thanks for another great video. Keep it up Will!
I'm not in college taking classes anymore so I'll be listing these TH-cam lessons on my resume lol
wow i just received my first official script for an audition and this really helped!!
Good stuff here. Always tricky breaking down a script. Thank you. 👍
Very thorough video! I learned a lot 😀
Cerulean is also a call back to Devil Wears Prada. :)
Thanks Will! This was incredibly helpful!! 🙌🙌
Villain role. The suggestion was playing a role of a villain that will betray his friends and family. He will become a hero at the end. My suggestion was excerpt from a script I've placed aside for now due various reasons and was a first suggestion that naturally came to my mind when I saw your acting.
In case it is interesting for practice or type of character, he will have fight with girl at the end of the scene, but sorcerer will interupt their fight and cast a spell on her, claiming that it is his fault and later will blackmail him and demand that he do more horrific stuff.
His road to becoming hero will be tough, but he will become one eventually
LOVED this video! Would love to see another one that’s a little more advanced. This seemed great for beginners! Really enjoyed seeing you break it down and then watching the actual self tape. You rock!
great video bud!
When you were describing the “breakdown” it reminded me of the office when Jim has to turn in a “rundown” but he doesn’t know what it is and no one will tell him 😂
What the heck, you are SO good at explaining things. If you weren't such a good actor I would say you should be a teacher!!
Haha well, thanks!
Awesome job on the Fabletics Men commercial
happy13435 thanks!
Stumbled across your channel and I'm glad I did. Clear concise topics and .. breakdowns.. of some valuable topics in the industry. Thanks for the insight and I hope you kill it in your upcoming shoots. Looking forward to watching your success.
Thanks Michael!
New to this channel just wanted to say thank you for all the knowledge and you killed you’re part at the end of the video. I’m a fan now dude good look in the near future of acting 🤟🏽
Loved the video and that self tape was awesome.
This is wonderful, thank you!
love this video, hope you will make more on breaking down a script ♡ ♥💕 ♡ ❤ ❤❤
I've always wondered how this is done. Thanks!
Rosannasfriend no problem!
Love your vids man!! They are so helpful. This one particularly really helped me prep for my audition 👊🏽
your videos are more helpful than my acting coach 🤣 thank you !
can’t wait to see more future content
Can you make more videos like this Amazing Work
congratulations on your booking. this video was very insightful and helpful. I just booked a role on a popular soap in south Africa.
Will, thank you for this video as well as the others. It is very helpful! 💙
Great video. The audition was interesting though, because your presence is phenomenal (!!!) and your technique is strong, but there were so many missed moments that would have made the scene stronger. You seemed to take the safe play rather than really having a strong opinion. Also, a flamboyant flare on the character was clearly there for the taking for the creative mind. I would have loved to see that twist. But, hey, they seemed to love it and you the role so bravo! The proof is in the pudding 💪
I thought this was a very linear approach as well. Casting sees a lot of good actors, what they are missing is seeing interesting actors.
Really great stuff, a lot of practical information. Thanks for sharing
Thank you...I really like this video...
From South Africa.
I really love your channel brooo
Very very helpful, new subscriber 🙌🏾
Gosh..Ok so I'm quite disappointed with the fact that I didn't know about your channel before. I just took some really expensive classes and didn't learn half a quarter of what I've learnt with your videos..... great. It's all very well and nice to be in front of a camera mimicking a real life audition with an acting coach telling you that all you need to do is be as real as possible and know the background story of the character you're playing and bla blu ble .. But that doesn't do much if you don't even know the specific steps of breaking down a script plus all the other additional info that you've given that's clearly the backbone of what separates mediocre from professional and that any other videos or classes out there seem to overlook and I can't UNDERSTAND why. Bang! I think you just opened my 4th eye. THANK YOU SO DAMN MUCH!!! (virtual bear hug)
Ange Lyrae So nice of you Ange! I’m happy it helps!
Thank you for your generous insight and advice.
I just saw your demo reel. That throat cutting scene! Dang.
thank you for the great tips
Post more often pleeeeease!!
You’re an angel man.
Amazing detailed clip! Thank you!
All of your acting videos are really helpful! Thank you so much!
You videos are so informative ❤
When your going for an audition do I have to find my own monologue or do they give us a script to read
Awesome! Really helpful! Thanks!
This was so helpful! Thank you!!
this is so helpful! thank you so much :)
Thanks for this simple breakdown of a breakdown!
Wow - Great info & video!! Thank you so much for posting :)
I’m so happy you are helping me to star working in my dream I’m 13 year old do you think that I can do it
Tbh I'm an engineering major with no interest in acting but this was entertaining to watch anyway. Keep up the good work!
Great stuff man! Keep up the work!
Great tips and an authentic communication style. Thank you.
Hi Will, another helpful video, thanks! I see the video is from four years ago but wondering how important do you feel it is to have a social media following as an actor? If anyone else here has thoughts on this question please share, thanks!
You good man, I truly appreciate your great info and positive vibes!! Keep it up man!
Your videos are amazing dude
Can you do this to get into character as well

My boi! I voice act mainly but want to do performance capture. Thanks for this
No problem! Break a leg!
@@WillyDubz thank you!
Hi Will
I don’t want to bother u. Actually I have saved some money for on camera classes and headshots.
I been calling some kind of a filmschool that offers different camera classes. They told me to start with the fundamentals on camera. If I started with the on camera audition class it would be too fast for me to learn everything without the fundamentals.
They also offered me to come around for free and watch an on cameraclass.
The fundamentals would be taught in a group of max 12 people (6x 3hsessions) for around 400 CAD
Are they maybe right to start with the fundamentals or should I insist on taking the auditionclasses directly?
I appreciate ur answers and wish u good luck 🍀 😄
I’m glad ur sharing ur knowledge with us 😄
Cheers
Franky either way! I think it is up to you. I wouldn’t stress it either way.
TheWillyDubz alright buddy. Thanks for the reply 😄
Very helpful video!
Suuuper helpful!! Thank you so much!
Really enjoyed very helpful
your the best ! Truly ! I am an intro level actor , ILL BE SURE TO SAVE AND SHARE .
Thank you so much for this ❤️
Thanks this was helpful. Can you help out with a quotation marks. How to use them. Thanks in advance
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Helps that your gorgeous , young and talented, But I enjoyed your presentation, lots of great info.
Can you tell me how do you remember lines
Kevin Hebrard a mix of repetition and knowing the story. I wish it were easier, but it is just straight reps!
Hi Will 👋🏻
Thanks for the good content. Keep that good work up man 👍🏻
I just have two questions.
I want to become an actor too. I’m actually in Vancouver and I need to make Headshots. I gained 5 years experience in school theatre but I have no on camera experience. Do u think it is necessary to take a cameraclass if I want to audition for some student projects?
How much money should I spend on my headshots?
If yes how many classes should I take?
I really appreciate ur work 😄
Thank u very much and good luck for u 🍀
Franky watch my How to Move to LA video. It answers all of those questions. As for a camera class, I would look into taking an audition class with a camera involved. It will make you aware of just how little you have to do on camera as opposed to stage work.
Thanks for that quick reply and your suggestions 😄
I just have still one question 😂
If I’m gonna audition for a student project, do they take people with just one camera class on their resume?
I just have no idea how many camera classes should be on ur resume if u want to take part in a student project.
Thank u 😄
this for beginner, beginners!
Hey, Great Video!! loved it. if you could do a video on how you memorise your lines and the techniques you use to memorise long monologues would be great and so helpful! :) keep up the good work love your videos!
