This was so helpful! I am just beginning and you have kept this real. Other TH-camrs seem to have an unlimited budget for all this stuff, but this is manageable. Just subscribed!
Do you have instructions on how to mount wall mount backdrop thing? Thanks for this video. It's really helped my husband and I set up our self tape studio.
I am so happy you kept ALL budgets in mind! Most people give 2 options and their “affordable” option would still be a bit pricey! 🎉🎉🎉 Definitely keeping this video saved!
Thank you for the video! Love the way you shot and edited it as well. Re setup - your house is beautiful and spacious, however in a tiny 1bdr apartment where some non-acting work and living happens I find it hard to even find a place for a convenient setup (Vancouver is dark in the winter, my umbrella set is weakish in brightness and to use backgrop stands would take up a lot of space. I meant it might be possible with some effort but would have get it on and off each time to setup). For my wellness channel I do not use any backdrop yet although it might beneficial to improve the lighting setup. Also mics like Rode micro and even Deity duo do not seem to pick up sound well at a distance. Lav mic is what I usually use but it has a cord.
Thank you for all your great tips ! Since Covid, self-tapes are a must but thankfully getting better and better at it through researching videos like this. I do however, have an issue when casting needs a full body shot and/or a 360 turn. Really hard when your doing it alone and can't pan out on a self- timer. I also don't have a window to stand in front of and the lighting needs to be pulled back as to not get it in the shot. This makes this portion of the slate a bit dark. Any suggestions to in order to avoid this? Thanks you so much !
great video my friend I am currently working on getting some equipment the number to version that you mentioned I wanted to ask in your personal opinion would a vloggers kit be good to use for self taping?
Hi Will! I have a quick question. Do you put some basic make up on your face when you do self tapes? Thanks to the latest innovation aka iPhone, it shows all the pores, acnes, blemishes, cars and everything. Or do you have just perfect skin by nature?
I have accutane to thank for my skin, but if I need to cover a spot or two I will use a bit of makeup. So long as you don’t overdo it it’s acceptable. It also depends on the role.
I guess I might need a second person to start and stop my cell phone while filming or is there a way to do this on my own ? Thanks for your advices. The are awesome!
Hey man, friend of mine told me about your TH-cam channel. Glad she did. Admire your hustle and consistency ✊🏼 Super inspired. Really enjoying the art you’re making. Just wanted to reach out 🔥 The grind don’t stop, keep it going!!!
as an aspiring actress, I can tell you that your videos are very helpful and insightful ✨ thank you for that and also, good luck on your journey! hope to see you win an academy award someday :)
I'm recording my self-tapes on my android phone. This is not the issue. My question is I look so far away. Your body looks like a normal size. I move my camera closer to get a short from my waist up, but my head looks smaller. My camera won't allow me to zoom in or out.
Hey im 15 right now and im planning on auditioning for a tv series in the Netherlands but im a bit scared ill stress out and ruin my audition. Do you have any tips? (Its a live audition not a self tape)
Eric Erickson welllll editing is tough when you first start out (anything worth doing is), but I’ve found TH-cam tutorials for just about every question I’ve had. It shouldn’t be too bad.
Thank you so much for all the tips and tricks that you have uploaded! You are a huge inspiration to me as I try to start a career in acting. I really think you would do a great job as Spiderman!!! So you should try that! Thanks again💯🔥💖🔥💯
Really enjoy your videos. Very informative! And thank you for sharing the equipment you use! I love the backdrops. Is the gray color that you have the same as the link you provided? ‘Fashion gray’ looks a little darker. Just curious. :)
Hey Arla! I've started gearing my channel toward giving my advice and tips from film school and woking in the industry if you want to check it out! You mind find some things helpful
I've got the lighting stuff; now I want to know how to actually shoot it - a close-up look at which buttons you push - how to edit it, how to post it. I'm a baby boomer - this stuff does not come naturally.
Smellworthy I believe crushing an unarmed black man’s neck in broad daylight by a cop that thinks he’s judge, jury and executioner is worth bringing attention to both then and now. That is not how the law works. Imagine if he were your family member.
Will Westwater I agree it’s an atrocity and I’m in no way condoning it. I just didn’t see how it relates to your self tapes. They seem like separate topics. Sorry.
Hi, Will! Thank you so much for this video, it's really helpful, especially for someone like me who has glasses and is concerned about ring lights reflecting off the lenses. I have a question for you: I recently bought a phone tripod with a cold shoe mount so that I can record self-tapes with the IVISII G2 Pocket RGB LED Light (th-cam.com/video/rDw_FuRdTss/w-d-xo.html) to keep my self-tape set-up very small. However, I'm realizing that the light is quite harsh. Have you ever used a light like this? If so, do you have any tips on how to use them effectively, or would you say that an umbrella light set-up is definitely better?
Filming on 500$ equipment is not filming on a budget...Sorry, but someone had to say it, not all aspiring actors are as financially adequate as you are. Just something to consider next time you put the word BUDGET in the caption of your video. I'd be interested in how artists can do self-tapes without the expensive equipment. That's more useful. Best Regards .

How do people afford this?
How Is It Going? Like Seriously? Thanks

Drywall anchors and a drill are your best friend!
That room tho.. yawss love it!!
Could you please post the link to the backdrop rolls? And the mounting hardware for them? Thank you!
Just added the links! Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Hey bb! I've recently started sharing my film school and industry knowledge on my channel if you are interested!
Great info. Will be checking your other videos. Thanks
Where did you find the vinyl roll rack for the backdrops?
Do you ever have an issue with file size when emailing an audition submission video?
Amazingly helpful video
Hey Will! Thanks so much for the information. Is the size of the paper rolls 53x36 ft because I see a few different sizes on amazon?
What is that color of your backdrop?
good info will, def things that I am using now for my channel
Do you have a clip how should I find an agent?

Hi! Your Canon digital camera is currently sold out on Amazon- do you have another model that you recommend?
Can I use my greenscreen instead of a background paper?
Great tips 🌟 I like your blue backdrop too.
Hey, Will. James here. I'm so grateful for your videos and acting info and advice.

Nicely done, I've wondered about green screens and editing- I'm not a fan of editing- is there a easier way to do this?

My equipment is always linked in the description. I mention that in the video.
Hi! I have a question, do you recommend union or nonunion, Im trying to get into acting and dont know which one to chose. And also paid or not paid?
Watch my LA video for more info on the union pros and cons :)

Great content as always will!
Did you say get a tripod that pans you up and down? Tripods cannot do what you showed, can you be more specific?
This is so helpful! What camera do you use for TH-cam (not self tapes)? I’m just curious.
Canon 1DX Mk 2
I use a sony a6500 for youtube and it's a game changer :)
Thank you for the great tips and your high energy.
I'll work hard to get these stuff ...

Why is everyone calling their audition tapes "Self Tapes"? I'm flattered, but why not use your own name?
