I know this sounds stupid, but I’m so sad about this, finding your channel has been one of the best things for me, being an older former skater who can’t skate any longer. All I can say is I’d do anything for you to be healthy again.

Okay enough. Let's help build from this how do we give him a place in his backyard to skate.
Also please understand this happened to me at 12. I woke up and my eyes where paralyzed. I saw horrible double vision. And I've been through this.

Dude, Dan, I am so sorry to hear about your lyme disease. I went through this journey myself, it took 3 solid years of treatment before I got relief. It completely destroyed my life. But I’m a living example there is hope. Aggressively treat this disease like it’s your F/T job. Lyme literate doctors are critical, antibiotics are important but so are a host of other things. Diet is huge, cut all sugars, including alcohol. I’ve learned a lot along the way, I know TH-cam comments isn’t a great way to chat back and forth but my socials are connected here if you ever want to reach out and just talk to someone who’s been there. Keep up the positivity and sorry again you’re having to deal with this.

Sorry you're going through this, Dan. I'm normally a lurker but just wanted to chime in and say how much I enjoy your videos and who you are as a person.
I don't have any experience with Lyme, but I have been dealing with chronic illness since 2016. Brain fog is my worst symptom but I also struggle with food sensitivities, fatigue, and joint pain. Have seen a few dozen doctors at this point and have found ways to manage my condition. But I'm still 'undiagnosed'. I actually appreciated the doc that was straight up and told me "whatever you have we might just not have a name for it yet".
I know you're a smart dude but based on my own experience, watch out for quacks trying to sell you expensive supplements and questionable procedures. After I couldn't get any answers via traditional medicine, I was desperate and ended up seeing some "functional medicine" doctors. I believe some of them can be genuinely helpful but IMO, there's a lot of pseudoscience out there. I've been told all my problems are due to anything from heavy metals to mold growing in my body to pH imbalances. They wanted me to take lab tests that were hundreds to thousands of dollars in addition to pushing their favorite (expensive) supplements.
Again, not saying that all of these people are trying to take advantage of others. For many of them, I think they truly believe everything they say. But when I was desperate and without answers, it was quite tempting to buy into the pseudoscience. Some of these people have good advice but all too often I felt taken advantage of.
There are clearly lots of people dealing with chronic illnesses where traditional medicine has no answers. Many of us (myself included) have had to deal with doctors telling us this shit is probably just all in our heads. But it's clear there is something physical going on with our bodies. It's been awful seeing people dealing with long COVID, but it helps prove the point that there's still so much we just don't have answers to. I'm hopeful for ongoing research, though.
To offer some hope, back when I started experiencing symptoms, my fatigue was so bad that skateboarding or biking was no longer possible. Through a lot of experimentation (mainly diet and some conventional meds), I'm back to skating and living more normally again. Glad to hear you're taking the time to address this and get some help. This shit sucks and I really hope you get better soon. We'll all be here for you either way, though.

One thing I wanna say is I appreciate that Dans videos include these really long cuts in an era where all content seems to move at hyperspeed!
Also that comment about "what if this is my last hurrah" really resonates. I think this is something a lot of pros deal with as they get older and I don't think it's easy for them. Many find other passions and projects and stay invovled in the skate community (like nuge and his spot burger she wrote!). never a pro myself but as a lifelong skateboarder ive found that as i get older I find new ways to challenge myself on my board and the skating doesn't get worse, it just that the focus changes. these are problems many people deal with and your honesty is beautiful.
I think you'll be able to ride your board for as long as you live my dude. Sending love

So as hard as it is, find gratitude for the enlightening experience Dan. The more you wrestle, the more you will lose. The blessing about being a skateboarder is that we all know about flow. You flow on a skateboard, but now its time to flow with life. Love and gratitude will heal suffering.

I feel this on a deep level. I've had 2 failed back surgeries, and I have a lot of bad days. I'm a guitarist and former skater, and there are so many days I can't even get out of bed.
I don't play guitar much because of the symptoms of my back pain and issues due to the surgeries. There are so many days where I just want to play guitar, but I can't physically bring myself to.
I've been pushing really hard this year to get healthier and to be able to get back to living a somewhat normal life.
I really felt when you said, "it feels like you're trapped inside this body that doesn't do the things it's supposed to or should be able to do." I've been living with chronic back pain and failed back surgery disorder for almost 20 years, and I still feel trapped inside this body and haven't given in or given up on trying to get better.
Hang in there, dude! You're a real one. And a trooper for pushing through this as much as you have lately and continue to post and make videos. Thanks for everything you do, and keep kicking this Lymes disease in the butt!

In my late teens/early twenties I was sponsored by a small team out of Santa Monica, but I lost my ability to skate due to a series of debilitating injuries. I completely understand the fears and soul-searching that you are being forced into. I fell into depression and drug addiction, but I did come out the other side better than before. I found a new passion that I love just as much as skating and I am now finishing a PhD in that field. Thank you for your candidness and honesty around health, aging, and skateboarding. I really feel for what you’re going through, having lived for several years under the fear of losing something I loved very much, so I just wanted to say thanks for all the stoke that you have shared with or inspired in others. You are a unique and undeniable presence in skateboarding, and I believe in my heart you will keep skating for many years to come. Perhaps not in extended sessions, but someday you’ll wake up, realize you are 50, and your feet will still be on a board doing some ridiculously creative and joyful shit. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up managing a team like Deville does? 🤨
Take care, my man. The universe has seen all the good that you’ve sent out into it, and it will find a way to give that back to you. 💜🛹💙

Sending you rainbows and positivity from OR! Dan inspired me to begin skateboarding again back in 2020, and to this day his videos continue to uplift me and get me excited to go and skate with or without my friends. I have family members with Lyme so I understand how it can change a person over time. All of your emotions are valid, and are a part of the healing process. You are stronger than you think you are. Lyme is a scary sun of a b@$*!, but as they say, "worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow. It empties today of its strength". With that, I encourage you (Dan) to continue to stay positive and practice gratitude for what you have right now whenever possible, even if the path to recovery may not seem to be linear all the time. I wish you the best during this chapter of your life. We will be here to support you along the way.

Love to you man. I hope things start looking up for you with this. Sorting out and juggling all of the insurance stuff is nuts. I’ve had some new “exciting” neurological, mental, physiological health diagnoses this year, thus the whole insurance game. And my job for the last 10 years just shut down. Fortunately my body isn’t fighting me back as aggressively as yours is right now, but severe persistent depressive disorder largely derivative of growing into my 30s hiding undiagnosed ASD coupled with a thyroid disorder that went unchecked for a decade of no doctor visits have me absolutely devoid of any energy and feeling more disappointed with myself and frustrated in general than I should most days. The doctor has been slow to prescribe medications because it was so long since I’d been to a doctor, nobody had any medical records for me anymore. We’re figuring it all out basically from scratch. I’m working through the grind with the doctor stuff, and slowly starting to find a groove again though. Don’t know exactly what I’m trying to say, but I hate to see you struggle, you kick ass, and whatever the future brings, I love this channel and I’m here for it.

I am 50yo, started skating in 1985, fell off in '95 and didn't return to serious skating until 2022... 27 years later. Two days ago, after not trying them since the early 90's I relearned blunt to fakie, blunt to disaster, blunt to 5-0 both ways and so on. And although I was dreading the days and days of bails I thought it would take to get them back... it only took 20 minutes to get them all true... and it has been that way for many tricks I used to have in 1990. So I guess, while I do not have Lyme (that I know of...) I'm saying there is alway hope. You got this, let's fucking go.

I don't even skate. I did for a bit at high school when THPS came out, but gave up after a while. But I still love to watch it, and I enjoy your channel a lot.
Wishing you the best in all this. God bless

I sometimes wonder if I have Lyme. I have been tested for it twice and both came back negative, but I have learned that testing negative does not always mean you don't have it. I definitely can relate with falling apart and just the feeling of loss when you can't think of a solution to help yourself get back to normal health-wise. I hope you get sorted out Dan, I really enjoy your channel.
It has helped me a lot lately, I've been going through a divorce and I can literally only eat when I sit down and try to immerse myself into your videos. Your channel has worked the best for that then any other. Thanks for that. There is something unique about your content.

Sorry man. It was 10 years for me. The slow progression to the bottom was something I never thought would change. I counted the summers up I thought I had left as I watched one slip by from my living room window. Spent all my savings and more on treatments. Finally I ran out of money and hope. During that time I went from being an agnostic to putting my trust in Jesus. I remember the last day I was sick. Attempting to put up a tent and gave up and sat in the car. The next day I was healed. 10 years it took for me to gain that trust. Even after I got better, every time I got a cold or flu I thought it was all over for me lol. But it’s gone. I went from not being able to drive myself and spending 6 months not being able to leave my house to this year hiking all 413 miles of the Oregon coast. Every step of that thru hike, I was so grateful. Keep in it. It isn’t forever.

Hey Dan, I feel you buddy. Ever since the “vid” I personally took my health and nutrition seriously. I believe that what you put in your body, is what’s received. That chat with the 40 year old dude sounds nice, but on a side note your channel is awesome and you and the Powell team are dope!

You've got a great heart my dude. I love the passion you have behind skating. I don't get to skate as much due to my bad feet so I understand the heartbreak you are going through. I've realized that skating is more than just skating, it's the culture behind it and the connections you make. You've left such a large footprint in the community, and you'll be a part of it regardless. Keep that optimism up man, you got this.

Homie, u got this, even if you have to shift the channel to a lymes disease coverage channel with some skateboarding to make you happy, thats fine, get the info out there, the people who need to hear it will find it, you said it yourself, you love skateboarding, your not gonnaa stop, so why resist regardless, yea its gonna suck, ye its gonna be hard, yea, but no one here is having a pity fest(not insinuating you put forth that), i was very unaware of the deeper risks of lymes disease, and now am way more aware and planning for prevention, thank you for that.
If you feel you can continue to help people through this blight, imo your doing alot of good with the platform you earned.

And thank you sharing with us, always mega grateful as a dude to see and hear other dudes talk about their health and how they are tackling it/struggling. Will be happy to see future uploads whenever they happen to be shared. Stay well king.

I personally have not dealt with Lyme Disease, but the only person I know of that got it did get better. I know it took about 2 years, though. Not great news, but everything can be better. I believe the doctors caught it about 2 months in. I don't remember how long it took for you.

My symptom was chronic inflammation in my knee and not neurological as far as I know. I went through multiple months of oral antibiotics however without any improvement. What finally seemed to help was getting a PICC line put in and doing daily injections. It felt pretty extreme but really glad I went that route in the end. Many sympathies, everyones experience seems so different and it felt really hard finding an experience Lyme specialist. Lots of ups and downs but I actually started skateboarding again (was a teenage skater) following my knee surgery as a victory lap. Still going strong today. ❤
