I honestly feel like Erotica is Madonna's most adventurous, artistic, and original album. It was the one that didn't seem to be focused on hits and catchy tunes. And, despite the ode to Dita Parlow that is the opening track, I also felt this was the one album where Madonna focused more on being a musical artist rather than all the gimmickry, controversy, and channeling of the past models and actresses that has made her so famous. This was her step away from pop-video-MTV-generation entertainer to a deeper more soulful singer. Although I like pretty much everything she's ever done, I feel like True Blue, Erotica, and Ray of Light are her most original works. I wish she would have done another like this one.
Astaroth Grey Madonna's music has always been a lot of fun. Mostly, it's been an ode to pop, dance, and post-disco acts that came before her. But, there were times when a little bit of artistry shone through, with the help of Patrick Leonard and Shep Pettibone, and Erotica, along with Ray of Light, are the two instances when that happened. I've always enjoyed Madonna for reviving sounds made famous long ago, but when I really feel like hearing something diverse and original from her, it's this and Ray of Light--her two pieces of art in an otherwise commercially driven career.
The Black Hat Writer I think she also did a great job in "Bed Time Stories" that was terribly underrated... I love Erotica and I would say that BOTH Erotica and Bed Time Stories are the best of her career...
Edik San Agree with you there, Erotica and Bed Time Stories, then perhaps Ray of Light, not loving the stuff she's produced since Ray of Light, the latest album is crap.
Ray of light was also very nice indeed. But I still like the some material of the others cds since Ray of Light. Is clear that they were made to make money but anyway I like some tracks, not the full albuns as before. She still trying to be on top, unfortunatelly not with same quality as before but Madonna knew with time that what sells is not quality otherwise Bed Time Stories would be her best album of all her career and it almost not sell... I belive she is now focused in let a good money in the bank for her kids and to introduce them in the artistic world so this is why playing with Nick Minaj and etc... but who would not like to have fun with the kids and leave them safety for the future? ;)
I think Madonna's "Deeper and Deeper" was copied from La Toya Jackson's hit "Could This Be Love We're Making" released the year before (1991). Do you hear the similarities too?
This video is incredibly deep in visual metaphors. I’m not a Madonna fan but this is one of the best videos ever made. Her father keeping her away from the pleasures that he himself is drawn to. Losing control and cutting the cord at the end. She truly is the amazing.
I always thought she must have been inspired by the Paul Morrissey movies from the late 60's and early 70's. I don't think Udo is her father in this story. I think she has a daddy complex and was always longing for his love and devotion but he is a slave to his art. The symbolic gesture of him cutting the balloons is merely to free her of this puerile fantasy she still has of him.
A masterpiece!! This whole album is amazing but this song STILL is a JAM all these years later!!! I dare you to listen to this and not move!!! In 1992 I was a scared, Gay, teenager finding his way in this crazy world and this album was the soundtrack to my coming out!! It will always hold such a special place in my heart!! I am almost 43 and still a huge Madonna fan!!! All Hail the Queen!!!
For me, this is a tired Shep Pettibone. Kind of boring and sort of a VOGUE Copy cat. I am super fan of Madonna's Vogue and Rescue Me,. However, for some reason I have not been able to understand after almost 30 years, Deeper and Deeper never caught my attention at all. The one song from Erotica I really adore is Rain, specially for its INMACULATE VIDEO; the kind of music video Madonna fans expecet from our queen.
R.I.P. Seymour Stein 1:47 the music executive who launched the careers of some of my favorites as Madonna, Talking Heads, Cure, Depeche Mode (the last 2 in America)
Deeper and Deeper is one of the most complex Madonna videos, where she plays Andy Warhol's muse, Edie Sedgwick, and her transition from a naive person to someone with malice, the innocence is represented by the balloons M carries around and as time goes by they all get popped up
I'm still trying to follow the exact storyline in this video - I love it, but in many ways it confuses me (I still don't understand who the guy at the beginning going "Beware!" is supposed to be... a cult leader?).
Udo Kier from Warhol’s Flesh for Frankenstein and Blood for Dracula is the spiritual guide in the video. Holly Woodlawn, Jackie Curtis, and Candy Darling are also referenced in the video. Sofia Coppola and Deb Mazar are Madonna’s girlfriends in the video. Her label boss at the time, Seymour Stein, has a very quick cameo in the club scene.
I think she regrets it. Y'know with the overall softer approach on the sexualised club aesthetic on 'Bedtime Stories' and finding spirituality with 'Ray of Light' and 'Music'.
I would agree with the exception that I would not say "one of the greatest female artists of all times". Maybe future music lovers will name another female singer as "the greatest of all times".
One of my favorites! I will never forget the first time I listened to this album. I was driving on a 6-hour trip, and I played it over & over & over again. Thank you, Madonna!!! xxo

This was filmed in West Hollywood in 1992 my sister was an extra in this scene.....During the same time of the Sylvester Stallone movie with Sharon stone....they filmed it at R mar Los Angeles. Great underrated video. I miss this madonna.
I miss this Madonna too. In 1992 Los Angeles, restaurants and clubs were only considered cool if Madonna went there. I've never seen that level of star power since, although anyone can be famous now.
How has Madonna only got 7 million subs? She's Madonna for heavens sake. What a great song this is, proper pot boiling 90's pop. The entire Erotica album is superb. Great groove, total Goddess.
This was a magical Madonna era! I was 22, and it was the height of the supermodel craze, 70's style had a resurgence, the runways were filled with this fashion. Me, and my friends used to go to the thrift stores, try to recreate what we saw on videos like this, MTV's house of style, etc., then go to the clubs. It was also around the same time her (scandalous) Sex book came out, and her film Truth or Dare. There was no one bigger at this time in my opinion!
I am sooooooooo sorry for the "nowadays" kiddos... They will NEVER know what it is like to be part of the generation who continuously were gifted with Madonna´s MASTERPIECES record after record after record after record. We were so spoiled! Thank you MamaMadonna!
Happy to inform you that some of us grew up listening to old music in CDs with our families, I listen to Madonna from time to time cause her songs are s bop!
I'm a full blown Gen Z, however my Gen X dad actually introduced to Madonna's music (however he just likes her earliest music like "Everybody", not so much the most explicitly queer and sexually liberated songs). That being said, I have a huge respect for Madonna, despite not being close to a "fan". I'm not sure if this is a hot take, but I even prefer Madonna's music than Lady Gaga's, despite the latter's music being arguably more "of my time". I think we'll keep talking about Madonna well after she's no longer in our physical dimension.
Madonna has sold more than 250 million albums and 150 million singles worldwide and is recognized as the world's top-selling female recording artist of all time by the Guinness World Records! But her social and cultural impact is more important than album sales... She's not only a singer or dancer... She has had a profound influence on pop culture! Woman who changed the world! I haven't heard this song in years. Why its not on the radio more ill never know. Its pretty timeless and sounds just as good and current now as back then.
I believe that the 1990's represented a peak in musical creativity and balance in the music industry. The quality of production is superior to anything that is out there right now. Although this track is very underrated, it is a classic. It is one of Madonnas darkest and most poignant pieces of work.
Interestingly I was told by a guy who worked and played in the music industry pretty much the same thing. He was a guitarist in rock/indie band and said to me 'enjoy this era because that's it. Its peaked everything has been done and there is nothing else to come'.

Deeper & deeper and deeper and deeper. Sweeter and sweeter and sweeter 🎶🎵🎶🎵
Best Madonna song EVER and I love most everything she's done. I used to dance every time this song hit.
The Black Hat Writer I agree
I belive she is now focused in let a good money in the bank for her kids and to introduce them in the artistic world so this is why playing with Nick Minaj and etc... but who would not like to have fun with the kids and leave them safety for the future? ;)
This song never fails to bring deep emotion and excitement to the senses. It never ages. Just amazing!!!
You're right my dear
Madonna put her whole club youth joy and journey in these track & mv.

This video is incredibly deep in visual metaphors. I’m not a Madonna fan but this is one of the best videos ever made. Her father keeping her away from the pleasures that he himself is drawn to. Losing control and cutting the cord at the end. She truly is the amazing.
I m also not a madonna fan but little of people like us undestand the sense of this video.
It is a classic like open your heart
I always thought she must have been inspired by the Paul Morrissey movies from the late 60's and early 70's.
I don't think Udo is her father in this story. I think she has a daddy complex and was always longing for his love and devotion but he is a slave to his art. The symbolic gesture of him cutting the balloons is merely to free her of this puerile fantasy she still has of him.
@@softbatch1 For me Udo plays Andy Warhol because him at the same time representing for his "troupe" a Father figure...
Drops la Isla Bonita in the middle of the song
Very nice song, and Erotica is (probably) her best album!
Erotica is one of her most creative and most provocative eras. There is deep mystery in the entire album. Great piece of art.
Yep ..
Very conceptual album.
Shep Pettibone did a fantastic job with this song. It is one of my favorite Madonna productions.
I agree and some of the best Madonna songs are really a Madonna+Pettibone composition.
Madonna produced it too. The flamenco section was her idea.
Yep, like that whole album. My favourite. 💋
@@juankyrodriguez973 yeah this song is like madonna's interpolating herself into her past hits. Still, the video and song are attention worthy.
R.I.P. Seymour Stein
1:47 the music executive who launched the careers of some of my favorites as Madonna, Talking Heads, Cure, Depeche Mode (the last 2 in America)
Deeper and Deeper is one of the most complex Madonna videos, where she plays Andy Warhol's muse, Edie Sedgwick, and her transition from a naive person to someone with malice, the innocence is represented by the balloons M carries around and as time goes by they all get popped up
Where's Joey Stefano? I do not see him.
I'm still trying to follow the exact storyline in this video - I love it, but in many ways it confuses me (I still don't understand who the guy at the beginning going "Beware!" is supposed to be... a cult leader?).
@xPixiex xGothiskx Wow. In gay porn movies he seems like a different guy. Are you sure?
@xPixiex xGothiskx I know that he's in the video. The problem is that I would never recognize him like that, with the wig.
The Erotica period was Madonna at her best. I really hope she devotes enough time for that time period in her upcoming movie.
I think she regrets it. Y'know with the overall softer approach on the sexualised club aesthetic on 'Bedtime Stories' and finding spirituality with 'Ray of Light' and 'Music'.
Movie really? Had no idea
@@somebraveapollo8211 judging by the way she went back to being sexual in the 2010's, she got over it.

Madonna is definitely one of the greatest female artists of all time. I grew up listening to her songs.
Yes indeed
I would agree with the exception that I would not say "one of the greatest female artists of all times". Maybe future music lovers will name another female singer as "the greatest of all times".
One of my favorites! I will never forget the first time I listened to this album. I was driving on a 6-hour trip, and I played it over & over & over again. Thank you, Madonna!!! xxo

@@topherinhawaii yes totally! Now a lot of house music from that time sounded similar so I don't know if Madonna actually copied Latoya. Both songs are great! 👍
Had there not been such controversy during the Erotica era, this would have been more than a top 10 hit. Think it could have easily been a #1 smash. It still sounds so good today and wouldn’t feel out of place at all on today’s Top 40, IMO.

There was no one bigger at this time in my opinion!
supermodels existed before the 90´s

I believe that the 1990's represented a peak in musical creativity and balance in the music industry. The quality of production is superior to anything that is out there right now. Although this track is very underrated, it is a classic. It is one of Madonnas darkest and most poignant pieces of work.
