The music scene in 98 was Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync. Madonna was a 40 year old new mom and she said f*ck the ‘rules’ and DOMINATED with Ray of Light! So risky and unexpected.
Actually Britney Spears only released her first single in mid of 99 and so did Christina Aguilera. NSync had their first US TOP 10 song in '99 and Backstreet boys had big hits in '96 and '99 but not in '98. In 1998 was all about Titanic Celine Dion song, Madonna (this album sold over 18 million copies!), Janet Jackson ("Together Again" was the biggest hit of her carreer) and a couple more things (but not much more global). Madonna never went anywhere since she started having TOP 10 Hits in 1984 and during 1998 she had another 2 TOP 10 Hits with "Frozen" (#02) and "Ray of Light" (#05). But in 1997 she had a TOP 10 with "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", in 1996 with "You'll See", in 1995 with "Take a Bow" (#01 for 7 weeks), 1994 with "I''ll Remember" (#02) and "Secret"(#03).... and in almost all years before since she started her carreer. Before it was more regular some 40 yo woman to have TOP 10 Hits (Tina Turner, Cher and other artists did it as well before Madonna).
@@nunogouveia6458 1998 was also the year of The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill (by Lauryn Hill) and Destiny's Child's first and self-titled album. And also Brandy's Never Say Never was huge.
This is Johan Renck's masterpiece in the remastered HD quality it deserves. Needless to say Madonna is in a league of her own. The red kimono was designed by Jean Paul Gaultier and was also worn at the 41st Grammy Award performance of the track.
I’m so happy Madonna did this in an era where no one misunderstood the cultural homage and made a big deal about it tearing her down. This really is a masterpiece. I remember how much I loved it watching the premiere and thinking “wow that was nothing like the song suggested it would be”. So genius.
I wish people would appreciate this. It's a Cultural "homage" not this negative cultural appropriation BS narrative being pushed. Its like appreciating the beauty of a flower, there's no ill intent intended whatsoever. Just love towards something you lay no claim over.
@@Jasonmascelli of course it is. Madonna was obsessed with it at the time and incorporated it into her art and personae. She watched Anime like Perfect Blue and read books on Geisha.
When I was very young Nothing really mattered to me But making myself happy I was the only one Now that I am grown Everything's changed I'll never be the same Because of you Nothing really matters Love is all we need Everything I give you All comes back to me Looking at my life It's very clear to me I lived so selfishly I was the only one I realize That nobody wins Something is ending And something begins Nothing really matters Love is all we need
I've often found that people who say theyre not huge Madonna fans is because they have just heard a couple songs. The deeper you get into her catalogue and persona the bigger respect for her as an artist you get. Unfortunately she faced a lot of ridicule from the media due to sexism and so a lot of her critique is still pervasive in people who write her off on that basis. Luckily I think as the newer generations keep rediscovering more of the pasts female artists like with Kate Bush and Stevie Nicks, Madonna will continue to be more respected as the true artist, intellectual, feminist icon and trailblazer that she always was.
I wonder - why do idiots always have to put the preface "I'm not a fan" before commenting on Madonna, yet they never do the same for many other less talented, less artistic, less interesting, less challenging artists? Why?
Once may or may not be a fan of Madonna. However, no one can deny the woman is a living legend. Creativity. Talent. Courage.... no one dead or alive is and may never be compared to her. Amazing.
The Era "Ray of Light" is Iconic in the history musical of Madonna. The Sounds, The Customes, The Voice (the best in alls album of her), The Videos. The Influencial in other Artists. Great Job.

Not only was Ray Of Light one of Madonna's very best albums, but it also spawned some visually stunning videos. Nothing really matters is definitely one of them! The jerky dance movements are so mesmerizing. Can't wait for the reissue of this brilliant chapter of her career.
#MadonnaMarcouMinhaVida
This era of Madonna is my favorite. The songs and videos were absolutely on point. Great lyrics, great music, great choreography, great cinematography. Absolute fire 🔥
A visual and musical masterpiece. We are really in a higher pop level. Absolutely stunning Video & one of Madonna’s best songs ever. Thanks for the HD.
This video actually scared me as a kid. And my dad being Japanese also thought it was a bit frightening and he even told me yeah she actually had those elements there for a reason.
Senti um Amor tão grande por ela quando ela entrou, que desceram algumas lágrimas dos meus olhos, de emoção e alegria. E olhei pro Céu e agradeci à Deus (ao Universo), por uma de minhas ídolas estar no meu País.

madonna really showed her artistic and creative side during the "ray of light" era. there were no publicity stunts, controversy or any of that other fuckery she was so used to. i appreciate madonna when she is all about the music.
This album was the first time that way.. She tried to prove herself as a serious artist but she could not continue.. This album is the only one of hers..
Gorkem A don't forget "bedtime stories". it also focused more on madonna's talent than her publicity stunts. madonna doesn't have the best voice but on the "bedtime stories" album, madonna gave you some solid vocals especially on her ballads. the lyrical words and the R&B vibe on that album made it a masterpiece and probably madonna's best album.
I love how on this video she is so serious in certain sections but then towards the end she lets her hair down and you see the playful side which is/was the real Madonna
One of her best songs and her best music video ever. The crazy scenes, the set, her outfit, everything is so incredibly perfect and weird that after all these years I still see it and feel amazed.
For me it's Frozen, but this is a close second. But I like basically everything she did together with William Orbit. Those songs all sound unique and interesting even nowadays.
I agree, I have listened to old music such as Madonna and Prince today. There are tons of others over this past year and previous years in the comments doing the same. It seems the music industry is missing the talent and stars it once had and is producing music no one likes or wants.
I know exact what you mean. I was thinking the very same thing. I’ll never forget where I was when this came out. I had come to the end of an extremely painful divorce, and had escaped to the mountains to “lick my wounds” as it were. It was a very very snowy winter, winter of 1998, and I took such comfort and strength from this record!
I was just 9 years old when this album was released, and I must say this gave a good memories on my childhood years. This is the album i keep coming back. The album is undeniably beautiful - and I must say it was the top tier album of Madonna.
The madness of the visuals.. the sobriety of the lyrics.. brings me even more to tears today.. 25 years after first listening to and watching this epic song and its MV.
One of her most underrated and under appreciated great songs (only rivaled by Deeper & Deeper). Should have been a massive #1. Still fresh AF 🔥 in 2021 and beyond
I have always loved this song. The music video feels so clean and unique. No one makes video like this anymore. I’m glad she opened the tour with this song
This is my all time favorite track. It is so timeless, spiritual, liberating and empowerig. There is so much truth in it. You can't carry life's baggage with you to everywhere you go, but you can keep and carry love in your heart and mind regardless of where you are. Love travels and stays with you. It also motivates and energizes you and makes you overcome what life throws at you. The video is far ahead of its time. It is about making it through chaos and spiritual rebirth through love. As the fourth single from Ray of light album, its extended dance CD topped the sales chart as well as the dance club chart. It made it into hot 100, but didn't go all the way to top 40 because the radios were still playing the other tracks from the Ray of Light album. This song didn't get enough radio airplay that it deserved. It is one of Madonna's greatest tracks ever. I love her voice, especially on this track. Lets give this extraordinary gem of a track finally enough love and appreciation that it deserves by revisiting it again and again and by playing it everywhere.
That build-up though at 03:30 where the beat starts to go really hard and just when you think it's gonna climax into one big thumping beat, it dips and Madonna follows it up with mellow singing is simply what you would consider a genius musical tease - you want more but you just can't. And thus, you end up listening to it over and over again. It is effectively toxic and I am addicted to it.
A favorite part!!! Keeps on repeating that. Also, she and her team has the same addictive beat with The Power of Goodbye. After the part “I learn to say goodbye. I yearn to say goodbye!” Damn, the melody/beat is just addictively insane!!! Love these 2 songs!!! 😍😍😍
Fun fact, this video is recorded in sweden at the shcool of KTH, in the basement of the school roughly 25 meters down there is an abandoned nuclear reactor wich was swedens first nuclear reactor. The reactor was active from July 13, 1954 to June 6, 1970. The reactor is now gone but the hallways and big rooms are still left and gives of a creepy vibe wich made this video spectacular.
Madonna has many masterpieces to her name and this is definitely one of them. Right on top. Ever since I heard this first time many many years ago I knew I couldn't hear it just once. Madonna has incredible voice, lyrics that can move you sometimes and couple that with some unbelievable music you get a song that reverberates through decades. She is THE Queen of Pop for a reason. And she will remain there. Did you notice the subtle camera movements in this video? It will move left to right few times and I love that part so much. And Madonna in that red japanese attire looks great. She is an expert in making music videos. They don't make songs like this anymore.

Years go by and I have not seen anything like this song and video in reference to motherhood and how it changes the life of a woman, especially a woman like Madonna, she does not need to want to look like mother nature, a goddess with a crown of flowers, veils and subtle colors. Of course, I respect the artists who have done it, but Madonna is definitely another level, she is mature, loving, reflective, strong and confident, without ceasing to be avant-garde, the song stays in your mind from the first moment.

The music scene in 98 was Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync.
Madonna was a 40 year old new mom and she said f*ck the ‘rules’ and DOMINATED with Ray of Light!
So risky and unexpected.
Same happened with The Rolling Stones in the 80s.

So much art in every little detail
I’m so happy Madonna did this in an era where no one misunderstood the cultural homage and made a big deal about it tearing her down. This really is a masterpiece. I remember how much I loved it watching the premiere and thinking “wow that was nothing like the song suggested it would be”. So genius.
I wish people would appreciate this. It's a Cultural "homage" not this negative cultural appropriation BS narrative being pushed. Its like appreciating the beauty of a flower, there's no ill intent intended whatsoever. Just love towards something you lay no claim over.
Let’s not kid ourselves, nothing here is homage to any actual asian culture
@@Jasonmascelli of course it is. Madonna was obsessed with it at the time and incorporated it into her art and personae. She watched Anime like Perfect Blue and read books on Geisha.
@@Jasonmascelli and that is why we’re having this cultural crisis. People like you.

When I was very young
Nothing really mattered to me
But making myself happy
I was the only one
Now that I am grown
Everything's changed
I'll never be the same
Because of you
Nothing really matters
Love is all we need
Everything I give you
All comes back to me
Looking at my life
It's very clear to me
I lived so selfishly
I was the only one
I realize
That nobody wins
Something is ending
And something begins
Nothing really matters
Love is all we need
Hi. Madonna is fantastic. I consider this video to be her best.
"I realize that nobody wins."
How true.
Something is ending and something begins. It never ends. Just an endless loop.
Not a huge Madonna fan. But songs like this IS ART. Gives you goosebumps.
Was this a CD 💿 Single⁉️
I wonder - why do idiots always have to put the preface "I'm not a fan" before commenting on Madonna, yet they never do the same for many other less talented, less artistic, less interesting, less challenging artists? Why?

Our Queen of pop in her prime. This and Confessions are among her best albums. The videos she did during this era were gorgeous.

Not only was Ray Of Light one of Madonna's very best albums, but it also spawned some visually stunning videos. Nothing really matters is definitely one of them! The jerky dance movements are so mesmerizing. Can't wait for the reissue of this brilliant chapter of her career.
#MadonnaMarcouMinhaVida

madonna really showed her artistic and creative side during the "ray of light" era. there were no publicity stunts, controversy or any of that other fuckery she was so used to. i appreciate madonna when she is all about the music.
+madonna is and will always be the queen of pop.
Luke Fondleberg madonna was controversial. She thrives off of controversy.

Can't believe this song and album is 20 years old... it sounds fresher than most of the trash on the radio today!
True...
ABSOLUTELY
exactly
She always has been ahead of her time. This album was a masterpiece
I agree, I have listened to old music such as Madonna and Prince today. There are tons of others over this past year and previous years in the comments doing the same. It seems the music industry is missing the talent and stars it once had and is producing music no one likes or wants.
I can't believe this album is 25 years old. This album was instrumental in my development into adulthood.
Mine too....
and now she’s opening her tour with this song.
same here...
This is music is so chic. You can play this song at a disco, and still can make people get up and dance. Bravo Madonna

I think this is my favorite Madonna video. The styling, the slightly off the beat dance moves, and the great lyrics...hypnotic!
Just like life.

The reactor was active from July 13, 1954 to June 6, 1970. The reactor is now gone but the hallways and big rooms are still left and gives of a creepy vibe wich made this video spectacular.
