Lyrics:
[Spoken intro - LaWanda Page, RuPaul]
Once upon a time, there was a little black girl, in the Brewster Projects of Detroit, Michigan. At fifteen, she was spotted by an Ebony Fashion Fair talent scout and her modeling career took off
You better work.
[Chorus - RuPaul]
You better work
(Cover girl)
Work it, girl
(Give a twirl)
Do your thing on the runway
Work
(Supermodel)
You better work it, girl
(Of the world)
Wet your lips and make love to the camera
[Hook - RuPaul]
Work
Turn to the left
Work
Now turn to the right
Work
Sashay, shante
[Verse 1 - RuPaul]
It don't matter what you wear
They're checking out your savior faire
And it don't matter what you do
Cause everything looks good on you
Supermodel
[Chorus - RuPaul]
You better work
(Cover girl)
Work it, girl
(Give a twirl)
Do your thing on the runway
Work
(Supermodel)
You better work it, girl
(Of the world)
Wet your lips and make love to the camera
[Hook - RuPaul]
Work
Turn to the left
Work
Now turn to the right
Work
Sashay, shante
[Verse 2 - RuPaul]
I see your picture everywhere
A million dollar derriere
And when you walked in to the room
You had everybody's eyes on you, supermodel
[Hook - RuPaul]
Work
Turn to the left
Work
Now turn to the right
Work
Sashay, shante
Work
Turn to the left
Work
Now turn to the right
Work
Sashay, shante
[Outro - RuPaul]
You better work
Work
Work
(Supermodel)
You better work
Work
Work
Work
I have one thing to say:
You better work
#TommyBoyRecords #RuPaul #HipHop50
I think it should be pointed out that this was released like 26 years ago and RuPaul still looks exactly the same. Fierce.
Tanya Phillips bc he works it
Im my opinion, even better. He's like a fine wine.
Andrea Bursey he is! All the good ones are gay, not that I’m attracting any celebrities but if they were to appear at my 🚪 that’d be awesome 😂

Love your videos! ❤
OH FUCK YES
Lol what are you doing here? Are you a rupaul's drag race fan??
The fact that Trixie played this to walk to, and completely forgot how it starts will never stop being funny to me
Well, she did imitate her on All Stars 3 and well, we as fans of Trixie Mattel have told her it was funny on the internet. So, we are to blame! We are the drama! 😂😂😂😂😂
So you came from that video too 😂
AND I FOUND THE VIDEO LMFAOOO
Jujubee mouthing: BLACK GIRL?
My daughter made up a dance to this song and I forgot about the beginning and immediately thought of Trixie. I was in tears
Kurt Cobain said this was one of his favorite songs to ever come out of 1993.
Seriously
Nirvana was on Rupauls Christmas special wayyy back. I think early 90's.
That's true, Theres is a picture with his daughter his wife And Rupaul together
Brett F. Kudos to Kurt Cobain!!!!🙏🙏🙏🙏
@@brett8460 That photo of RuPaul holding a crying Frances Bean is amazing.
How brave to be doing this way before drag became so mainstream. RuPaul was truly a trailblazer.
He looks like young Tyra Banks. With such boby it is not strange that he became drag.
Body I mean
HinHwood shit as a kid in the 80's this was normal and fun!!!
Oh, it's so brave to be a clown LOL
@@божьякоровка-ш2и You should get your eyes checked.
The kids dont know what Prime RuPaul was capable of...
She is THE Drag Supermodel that broke the mainstream glass ceiling. The Lingo, the Attitude, the Height...just out there in full daylight talking to people - black, 7 ft tall, no care in the world.
All the challenges on Drag Race represent parts of her career. Design: Making her own stuff in her Punk-Beginnings. Rumix: Releasing Music. Improv: Having a talkshow. Acting: Being in movies and tv shows. Advertising: Building her brand and selling merch. Girl Groups: Her Punk Band in the 80s. Comedy: Creating memorable catchphrases and hosting. Even if she is not that involved anymore, the challenges gives the contestants the tools to do it all.
EXACTLY 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I used to see Ru all around LA back in the day always smiling always friendly ❤
RuPaul is a HE!
I've loved RuPaul for at least 25 years ❤ ❣️🥰
I have never really thought about it and you are so fucking right!!
Producer: how many outfits do you want?
RuPaul: Yes
lol asking a drag QUEEN how many outfits is like asking a guy who has a underwear fetish how many jockstraps do you own 😂🤘
Lol 😂
Daniel Diego 😂 dop3 song though
Hahahahaha
Daniel Diego,that didn’t exist in 1993.
93 I didn't even knew what "gay" meant and Ru was already rocking drag on new york streets at daylight. Ru is amazing.
1993, I was 19, out, and had my first real boyfriend. I REALLY miss the 90’s. Ru was SO MUCH a part of that early 90’s visibility movement, and brought unprecedented glamour everywhere. FIERCE.
I wasn’t even born yet, and Ru was already taking the world.
@@sweetmacy2203 i cant even believe how scary it wouldve been to be a drag queen in 1993. especially named "Monster" haha

You can tell Ru was in the midst of a global takeover.
It doesn’t matter your gender or preference. This song will make you feel *FABULOUS*.

Damn right.
Hell yeah
🙂👋hi there true
Yep!
I need the children to know that when this came out it changed EVERYTHING! Grandma's were asking questions and loving it, Uncles loves it, Mother's were looking like...well duh it all makes sense with my son now. It was really a moment. Rupaul changed POP CULTURE forever!

Kurt Cobain got the joke, RuPaul was originally just a parody of the subculture. People latched on so seriously that it exploded. Not knowing, it was originally just a joke.... sorry

_They are a drag queen. The queen of drag actually. They have a show called "Rupaul's Drag Race" I recommend it. Is super fun to watch!_
I love how Kurt Cobain said this was his favorite song of 1993
I'm a lifelong rocker and metalhead, but this song is a FUCKING banger
respectfully thats hot
100 percent on board with this.
You can't be serious
People have no idea how much respect he gets from the rock scene. Especially with the punk scene.
@@Deemememe
RuPaul was a feature in the club kid scene in the early to mid eighties, and would frequent punk scenes. There are numerous home videos of him in the dilapidated buildings of NYC at the time, hanging out with scene and punk kids coming down from their buzzes.
Rupaul put this out in 1993 just think about that for a sec
pmwedoable and to top it off on a hiphop label!
In 1995 I worked in a LensCrafters and this gay guy I worked with would blast this song and dance around the lab making glasses. Lol he was great
OMG... just had this reality check....faaaakkk.
pmwedoable I believe it was this single of Ru’s that was Curt Cobain’s favorite song of the year.

I'm a photographer. I always play this song when working with the kids for magazines. Gets them in the mood quick especially when I do the "sachey chantey" part they laugh and have so much fun we all forget it's a photoshoot lol. Love RuPaul!!
It''s actually sashay, shante!
I would say it's "Sachez chanter" which is French for "know how to sing". Although written "Sashay.." A very clever use of names 😅

This is one of those happy songs. Never gets old.
Rupaul’s confidence amazes me.
I love watching old videos from the 80s they are raw unedited. 5th ninth avenue youtu e channel has all of Nelson's tapes. Nelson was a best friend to ru and the only one vlogging back then in that style. One of the first selfie vloggers. Anyway there's a lot of videos of Ru back stage before a lot of first performances as well gay prides to anything. Before the digital Era started to take effect.

At the time - I was 19 and living in Pittsburgh in an apartment, and when this would come on MTV my neighbor Danetta would run down the hall and get me to come watch (they had cable). So many good memories, and this song was in the clubs for a good 2 years after. RuPaul can do anything and make it good. He's a born entertainer, and by all reports a really decent human being. Thank God for RuPaul Charles. :)

This song sealed her fame, she was on top of her game and on her way to fame. Saw her perform this in Wash. D.C at Tracks.💥
*Him
Rupaul is a gay man. He is not a she nor does he identify as trans. Infact he doesn't do drag unless he is paid and doesn't really care about doing it for fun. He's amazing
Going to drag shows in the 80s and 90s gay men used to refer to the female impersonators, drag queens, female illusionist, ect, when they were in drag as her, girl, she, or wasn't her performance great, we even called each other Mary, like oh mary get real, so lighten up you snow flakes, Rupaul is an icon, and he earned it, and he would take it as a compliment. 😜

0:54 I don’t think RuPaul has ever worked a look better than that. The makeup and style was on point. That striped dress is on point.
Well David Bowie was the one who brought drag to main stream when he appeared in the Midnight Special. But Ru did so much better!
Ru was rocking lace front wigs before we even knew what they were!!
Honestly, Ru started the trend of women wearing heavy makeup and runway looks in music videos. Before Ru it was baggy jeans, fitted caps, sneakers or athletic gear.
Haha righr
I thought that very same thing!
@@stellabellafontay9366 No hun you're wrong, Ru did not start the trend of women wearing heavy makeup and runway looks in music videos!! It was all the before. Like George Micheal's - Too Funky video came out 1990, 3 years before this video, Madonna's Vogue too and many more. Ru was inspired by them all.
Wass : RuPaul inspired by Madonna?! Girl, get out of here. RuPaul has been wearing makeup for decades. That has been her career. Madonna was a pop star; started many trends and extremely successful. However, RuPaul made up his own rules.
When watching this, all I can think about is the backlash Ru Paul probably went through to make this video/song happen during this time. It had to be EXTREMELY difficult.
So much homage goes out to Ru Paul for this movement!
Not really, there was no backlash everybody loved it. There may have been difficulties getting it made, though.

The best part of all this for me is that RuPaul is recording with Aunt Esther, a legend in her own right. It's an incredible song to begin with, but this just makes it that much better. And they say you can't improve upon perfection...

Jor Dan Oh please, religious people LOVE to crash Pride and such. I’ve seen that, in person. Sit down.
@Jor Dan My whole family is christian, you're the one who doesn't know what says
Depending on where you live the public opinion drastically changes. And there is people who have to deal with their own family discriminating them. Same! 86' so I would have been 7 when this came out. My parents let me stay up late to watch RuPaul on Arsenal Hall Show
@@Secondhandlegs yes I was born in 86' too! But I had sisters that were 6 & 10 years older than me so I got meshed into late 80s early 90s teen life. So since putting this song on the other night I've put it on every time I do my make up now, kinda helped pull me out of a frumpy mom slump. Also should be mentioned that I made the original comment above under my husband Hectors account, didn't realize until after I commented that his TH-cam was logged in on my phone 🤣was too lazy to delete, search for the song and rewrite under my account. But yeah. I've been in such a slump in the last year and finally realized that I hadn't done anything for myself in over a decade. Been messy bun mom in sweatpants, no make up, no nothing ...
