I've heard several versions of this particular piece, but nobody plays it like Joel. Every other version I heard doesn't breathe as naturally and beautifully as this one. Joel is a true master.
I was taken by this piece some forty years ago when I heard Quarrington play it. This sensitive and lovely performance is well supported by the pianist too. Suitable for a cellist too I always thought. Are their really 26 idiots who put thumbs down on this.
Dear Joel, you are "THE MASTER", Gary "THE GENIUS", TOM "THE BOTTESINI of the DOUBLE BASS", Catalin "The Paganini of the double bass". It's a Joke, naturally !!! But I think all you I have mentioned have given a NEW DIGNITY to the DoubleBass. Thanks all for your Efforts and "GENIALITY"!!! This your Elegia is so sensible, full of passion, great bow and phrasing. Surely The Best ... !!! An amazing performance under every point of view. Also philological. You crescendo are fantastic. My best and best compliments for you ARTISTRY !!! Vito.
When I heard his Elegy No.1 in CD, I fell in love this tune. I bought a lot of CD of this tune, some of them were played by very famous player, but Jole Quarington is the best.
I find it astonishing that he plays it on a bass tuned in fifths but it was written for a "normal" fourth-bass, it sounds so well balanced (tuning in fifths is superior to fourths in my opinion, I do it as well).
Bottesini other than being a bass player even if he wasn't is a really good composer usually I find myself not liking many pieces written for bass by bass players but Bottesini is an exeption and a truely great composer if this was written for violin it would likely be much more famous however would not nearly be as good. All in all compositions like Koussevetzky concerto and Dragonetti are in all means ok compositions really just meant to challenge the bass player however this is sublime.
+Everton de Oliveira Ferreira Bottesini was a master, but that has nothing to do with Jaco. Different instruments, different music, but both world changing virtuosos.
It is written in C-major because of what's known as solo tuning. A solo-tuned bass i tuned up 1 whole step, from E A D G, to F# H E A. For solo tuning, you write everything as if the bass still was tuned E A D G, so it's written in C, but sounds D-major. Joel Quarrington however tunes his bass in fifths; C G D A, like a cello. It has many advantages.
A bit late but you could, here he is using solo tuning so everything is a major second higher than written. Bottesini wrote for 3 string basses mostly and in this piece the lowest written note is C which is the lowest note of the cello, so it's possible.
Colin Hedges-Stoops actually, he’s in 5ths, so he plays it in D to facilitate the open A and the harmonics. He’s actually tuned just like a cello, and octave down.

Joel is a true master but if you look around there are other beautiful renditions as well.
After working on this piece for a few months I thought I was getting pretty good.
Boy was I wrong.
after 8 years how's the progress?
@@mason11198 :D
but can we talk about that amazing trill really quick. its literally perfect

No cello 😡
I heard from my teacher that he actually uses cello tuning on the strings
Such a touching piece, makes me cry..
Мечтаю сыграть это к 4-му курсу колледжа. Очень красивая и выразительная музыка. Браво исполнителю!
If it takes you 40 years that is ok too.
one of the best double bass player in the world
What a great tone, what great musicality. This is how you play the bass.
I haven't cried to a piece of music in years.
Then listen to his Bach.

My favourute performance of this piece.....
Beautiful work! Thank you!
Beautiful !!!!!!!
Great Bottesini, Great compuser, ans specialy this compositor
I have to learn this after Concerto for Double Bass in B Minor. I understand now what Giovanni Bottesini is to the double bass world... Mozart.
Zvuk secanja~divno!
Great player, great double bass, pianist and great perfomance!!! Bravissimi!

Amazing!
Very nicely played. Lovely phrasing and dynamics. Well done!

Bravo! Perfeito
Great! Elias Llampa played great like this!
oltre la perfezione

hi joel so nice when i first hear this i fell asleep sso nice and i found a piece of this but solo part only
just amazing.... really beautiful, Bravo!!
Muy hermoso!!!
I only know one performance more magical than this, but it’s more recent and hasn’t been released yet so all I can do is tease it.
Please let me know when it’s released!
Es genial!!!
Bottesini played and wrote music for a 3 strings DB tuned ADG ...
Супер!
This is the proof was not the Great Jaco, the first one to put the bass in evidence. Before Jaco, came Bottesini!
+Everton de Oliveira Ferreira Bottesini was a master, but that has nothing to do with Jaco. Different instruments, different music, but both world changing virtuosos.
Before bottesini came dragonetti :)
Yes!
I agree with you, but, even all the differences,in the end of day, both are basses.
You're comparing apples to oranges. As a musician who plays both, they aren't the same.
Wow, Great Inspiration an very Good Player, even if a BiT too flexible in tempo for me
@jifiPOP101
Id argue that the Koussevetzky is just as good in my opinion. One of my favorite peices.
¡¡¡whoa whoa!!! ¿why the rush?
Beautiful! Where can I get it in D? Mine is in C.

Thank you, 100th Viking. This explains a whole lot.
100theviking excuse me, can I play Bottesini's songs in E A D G tunning?
@@vasquezdavid7 yes
OMG
@jifiPOP101
Dragonetti concerto is an edouard nanny etude, just sayin'
@jifiPOP101
also, koussevitzky is great. don't be hatin'
Her mo so !
ㅎㅎ
Are you Mahler!?
Do you know if can I play this song with E A D G tunning?
you can but the piano will have to be transposed
DAVID VASQUEZ if you use yorke edition then yes and piano will be in orchestral tuning
You can also play it in C major rather than D major
any thoughts on this being played on the cello?
A bit late but you could, here he is using solo tuning so everything is a major second higher than written. Bottesini wrote for 3 string basses mostly and in this piece the lowest written note is C which is the lowest note of the cello, so it's possible.
I am going to learn this on the cello. Everything looks like it would transfer over great except maybe the harmonics arpeggios.
Colin Hedges-Stoops actually, he’s in 5ths, so he plays it in D to facilitate the open A and the harmonics. He’s actually tuned just like a cello, and octave down.
Even later, yeah, you could, but what really makes this piece for me are the 2-3 super rich low Ds that just wouldn't be the same on cello
I gave the music to a fine cellist friend of mine, one Alfia Nakipbekova, twenty years ago but, as far as I know, sho never took up the challenge.
