  • In this interview, I travel to Paris to meet one of the double bass world's most celebrated artists, the great François Rabbath. We discuss many topics including François' musical journey, his unique approach to the double bass, and how he developed his famous techniques such as the pivot and crab. Maestro Rabbath is celebrating his 91st birthday this year and his bass playing is still as fresh and virtuosic as ever. He is truly a treasure of the bass world and it was a privilege to spend time with him and learn more about his music and teaching. On behalf of everyone in the bass world, thank you for everything you have done for us and we wish you a happy and healthy 91st birthday!
To round off the video, we are joined in the studio by Sylvain Rabbath on piano for a performance of Night and Day by Cole Porter. Big thanks to Sylvain for joining us and sharing such a special performance.

There was a series of interviews with this remarkable man on the French National Classical music radio station France-Miusique this week. I found myself hanging on his every word! When you think that Monsieur Rabbath is pushing ninety-three. This takes away one's fears of aging.

This is a fantastic interview! I started playing bass a few months ago when I was 45 years old, and it’s great to hear him say that you can start at any age. 😆
It was also great to see how he holds his bass. I’m a short person with a big belly and short arms so I have to angle my bass to be able to reach the finger board at all. My teacher says it’s kind of extreme. Now I can tell everyone I’m doing the Rabbath technique. 😆

Best Rabbath video on internet! What a great guy. He's still rocking this big clumsy beast at 90! 😀This show that you always have to be open minded to the double bass and find your own way and don't always rely on methods from more than 100 years ago (although they are surely helpful). There are many ways to approach the upright and you have to absorb all of them and find your own way on the instrument. There is too much narrow-mindedness. Do you also have part 2 after the musical intermezzo? Or did that never happen? Thanks so much for this video Geoff!

Hi Geoff, congratulations on this wonderful video. I've been fortunate enough to follow François' teaching for over 20 years but his talk is still so clear and inspiring to me. I encourage all bassists of all styles to take an interest in this technique. Whether you do jazz, classical, funk, metal 😅 the pivot, the crab .... Can revolutionize your approach to the instrument. Hopefully your channel's audience can popularize this unique technique even more. And a technique only at the service of the Music.

What's about the story that Yehudi Menuhin met Master Rabbath. Before my injury, I use the pivot thumb for my left hand, but I am afraid to change my endpin, so playing A and E strings I needed to use my leg to move the whole bass, hehehe.
