Your neighborhood looks hilarious with your lawn being the only one that looks good
Thanks, Ryan - this is perfect timing! I live in St. Paul, MN and was just wondering how to get my lawn ready for winter. This video is great, as always. 👍🏼
And at the same time I've learned that the LCN has lost the main focus of what us viewers want to see. Keep up the good work buddy
I learned a lot from this video. It's foreign to me being in the southwest. You all are preparing for snow, while I'm excited to see my rye sprouting!
Lucky!
I'm going to try this, for the first time ever. I generally just use one shot of Scotts w/Halts & crabgrass preventer in the spring, and like you mention -- it makes the grass grow like madness.
Wow! October 10, and you had snow. I'm so glad that I moved to Palm Beach. I couldn't take it anymore. Your lawn looks amazing Ryan. I'll be tuning in to your music channel to stay in touch. Stay warm.
I didn't have any but in MN they did. You just never know the ups and downs of the midwest
Is there a soil temperature range I would look for? Air temperatures in the 70's daytime and mid 30's at night right now makes it difficult to know when to apply it and I don't want to miss my opportunity. Thank you.
Spot on, Ryan...working my fall plan now...pushing root growth & slowing bringing the grass height down. I'll hit it with fertilizer one more time in early November.
Great Vid Ryan, perfect timing! I am going with the Ammonium Sulfate 21-0-0 as that is the quickest release of them all!!! Also a note on Ammonium Sulfate 21-0-0, it will tend to lower your PH a bit so if you are already borderline low PH do not use it all the time. But it is a great fert for a single winterizer app! If you have a High PH as I do I use it to help lower my PH over time.
Yes all great info there. Thanks for the comment
So if your PH is 6.3 it would bring it down closer to 6..? Or closer to a ph of 7?
Yes so the 21-0-0 Ammonium Sulfate is the most acidifying fert meaning as you apply more and more throughout the year it will lower your PH. I am not sure by how much per app as I cannot find that info (I'll have to ask Matt Martin on his next live show). The other options Ryan mentions are not as acidifying, i.e. Urea based and Organic based N ferts.
Excellent video, you always have great content. You make explaining and demonstrating things plain and simple. Thanks for keeping up with your channel.
Ryan, I used to have a spreader like yours. I bought the Earthway 2600APlus. It was one of the best lawn care purchases I've made...those rubber tires make such a big difference.
I'll probably be upgrading at some point. The cheap one gets me by for now.
No way! That's exactly the fertilizer I bought! And I was wondering when to use it. So, perfect timing for your video. Thanks.
Glad to help!
I’ve been told that maintaining the ph of the soil is important to achieve a healthy lawn. So, to offset the acidity of the soil, when is the best time to apply lime?
Holy Roller do y know your ph? If not do a test. And you can apply Lyme any time. It’s not dependent onweather I
Mine is a new lawn but it’s been mowed several times in the front yard and probably going to mow side and back yard one more time. Only been mowed once. I’m still running sprinklers but thinking of blowing them out this weekend.
Menards is the best! Have a couple here in SW MI. Same temps as you. Sad to have to do my last couple mows. Cant wait for spring.
Your lawn is looking good Ryan. Pity about the winter over there ,I have a mild winter here 🇦🇺and still mulch mow once a week here in winter. Thanks for the update.😁👍👍
It's a tough 3, 4, 5...months
it was a real tough end of summer for us in Maryland. It would be 100+ degree days then nothing but rain and then bam - fall. I finally was able to dethatch my lawn (took away about 10 bags) and aerated it. Spread some seed out and then put on a weed preventer/fert - since it wasn't supposed to rain for a day... which then it rained. My yard is a real mess. Hopefully some of it grows in but I think I'm about a week too late. Next year I've got to put some drainage in that won't be fun.
I'm in Indiana and follow your videos and it's helped me out tremendously. I really appreciate it man!!
Hi 👋 Ryan just had my lawn fertilised for the winter ❄️ know snow ⛄️ yet nice 👍 video david ❤️🇬🇧😁
Too bad our neighbors don't participate keeping their lawns up. Great video Ryan.
Do you have to water the nitrogen?
You're the man Ryan!!! Love your videos.
I'm from Indiana when's the best time to fertilizer for the winter? I think u said something Bout wait till the grass stops growing.
Great info as usual. Thanks!
Hello, I live in Central Alberta , Canada, We get 2-3ft. of snow and temps can be -20*C to -40*c for long periods. My question is how short to mow a lawn and should any grass clippings or mulch be removed before getting covered with snow? Quite often I have snow mold in the spring. What is the best way to prepare the lawn for spring?
Hey Ryan as you know. I did reseed two weeks ago up here in Duluth. I did use some Scott's Starter Fertilizer. The grass has come up. Spot that I filled in are doing really well. The lawn has slowed way down already. I was thinking about doing the first mow in a week... maybe two weeks. Which I'm sure will be the final mow for the year. Should I worry about putting a winterizer down? Would it help that new grass with its root system? I just don't know if putting down a winterizer so close to a starter fertilizer is wise or not. Thanks for all your help.
I loved the video answers my questions, Thank you
Ugh totally missed my chance to put winter feed, hope my lawn doesn't punish me for it this next Spring.
man i live near calgary AB. We’ve had a foot of snow on the ground for about 3 weeks already!
Crazy!
A chinook will come!
If you are not going to have any rain what is the rule of thumb for the type of winterize you use? And is it slow release you want to use?
Ryan, I want to make sure I have a good balance of synthetic and organic fertilizers being utilized in my yard. I usually apply Starter fert in early Spring and Early Fall. What are your thoughts? I know you said that you don't like to Fertilize in the Spring. Should I swap the early Spring app for a late Fall application? Is there another time of the year that I should use synthetics?
If I was your neighbor, I would treat my lawn exactly the same as yours👍
What if you would use a light application of lime instead to improve uptake of nutrients already in the soil? If it's storing the N to be used in Spring, why would it not use that for leaf growth? I should add I have very sandy soil here, last fert app was late September.
Nice job and it’s clear you know you’re stuff. I’m mostly organic now (except for a single annual synth pre-emergent application). Any reason you recommend a quick release synth application this time of year? What’s that based on? Temps?
Correct that in lower temps organic products like milo don't work as well because the activity in the soil that breaks down the fertilizer is much less in colder temps. So here a synthetic fertilizer acts quicker and works well.
Hey Ryan, great channel,I overseeded my lawn in Charlotte with Kentucky bluegrass.its growing great in most places, and I've cut it a couple times.should I just keep watering and cutting till it gets really cold?thanks
Just layed new Sod 3 weeks ago. Should i be doing anything for the winter right now?
I'm looking at either a 32-0-10 or 10-0-20 for a fall or winter fertilizer in the Chicago area after an overseeding around Labor Day. I'm hearing that Potassium is more important for root growth than Nitrogen. Which would you go with?
Can I use the winterize with weed and feed? Is the weed and feed even necessary right now or wait? Also when would be a great time to reseed or over seed the lawn to get more grass? I have St augustine and yes I'm a noob to lawn care.
Hey Ryan. How low should the lawn be cut for the last cut before leaving it to winter?
Would cutting it very low minimize thatch next spring, or does that not matter?
Thanks
Cut 1 notch lower than normal. That's all. I've done that for 5 years and its been working very, very well
I would like to know if I should use humic acid now in September (Minnesota) or wait for spring. Thank you love your channel.
Ryan, we’d love to have you over at the discord, hell ya brother!
Chris Voit do u have a link of the server?
Reayly helpful thanks 🙏
When we going to see you use the Green County products? I'm a believer man , You be glad you did! Great video as always
I'll have a few different things I will be trying next season
So when temps Hoover in the upper 40s for a high temp of the day?
should I wait to add topsoil this year or should I wait until next spring?
We winterize just before temps stay below 32 degrees.
Can you recommend a slow release nitrogen fertilizer for winterization that don't need watering?
Thank for the video Ryan. Hopefully we have some more time to enjoy the grass here. I have been looking at some fall fertilizers and in your application for winter i’m wondering (as a newbie) what about the P-K part for the winter. I thought this strengthens the root system and helps against disease. I even see some fall fertilizers with 0-14-28 ratios with this focus
There's differing opinions. I'm sky high on P right now so I don't need any and high doses of potassium late in the season have sometimes shown more pressure from snow mold. I have never had problems with snow mold but I hope that continues to be the case.
Do you have to water the fertilizer that you purchased from Menards?
Question … my fall over seeding didn’t get me desired results. Is it too late (Sep 28 eastern Kansas) to throw down another overseeding?
I have the same Scott spreader. What setting did you use?
Living in Georgia I have a concern, my front yard has a mixture of Bermuda, zoysia and tall fescue. Do I go with a liquid fertilizer or can I still use granular for winterizing ? FYI just bought the house.
Is it ok to over seed at the same time as fall fertilizing?
I got an open bag of starter Fert. 24-25-5 and says 3lbs per 1000 with rotary at 3.25 setting. Maybe I can cut in half or is that too much Phosphorus?
Today was the first day for temperature in Atlanta to drop to 50 degrees sure is nice to not sweet being outside. High was 70...
Can I possible keep my cool season grass growing through winter if it doesn't snow?
I got a perennial rye grass and planting Kentucky bluegrass under my deciduous trees... waiting for the more leaves to fall before I start reseeding... and tall fescue GCI turf blend for my front that I just planted last Sunday already germinated in my open area....
Thanks for video....
Look for a product called Roots Fe8 it's a liquid concentrate.
I need to find a local source of ammonium sulfate. Just got results of a soil test on the 9th. Very high p & k while the n barely registered. Also a pH of 7.2. I'm thinking next year only two apps if Milo because I just don't need the extra p. I had my son put down the same 20-0-9 from Menards today you talked about in the video.
N on tests can be all over the place just depending on what was happening in the soil at that very moment. However I think you're right to look to add some other nutrients and back off the P
Thanks Ryan. Great video as always. Didn't know about the quick release preference for fall. When do you use slow release?
slow release is good for most applications if you're not doing consistent smaller doses of fertilizer. So one in spring is great with slow release because it doesn't force so much growth all at once.
Thanks Ryan. I appreciate the clarification. All the best.
does one areate first. then put fall fertilizer down?
How do you get that checker board look?
Love your videos first of all... Keep up the good work.
As far as I can tell the idea behind winterizer fertilizer comes from a study made by Cornell University.
Do you happen to have a link to the study?
With regards
Anders from Denmark 🇩🇰👍
Do you use a drone for the high up angles while filming? Super cool to see the lawn compared to neighbors, keep up the great work!
Also my yard has mostly clover and crabgrass problems with some Kentucky Blue Grass mixed in... Should I use the pre emergent that you use tanactin I know that's the foot itch company I can't remember the product that you're using, or should I use the 65PRODIEMIN?
Thanks for all the great videos this year! What is your opinion on winterizer weed and feeds? Do you prefer to apply your own pre-m with a separate fertilizer?
I typically use fertilizer as fertilizer and do any weed control as a separate application so I can be more targeted.
Hey, Ryan great video... what kind of pressure emergent can you use with seeding in the spring? I missed my window to winter fertilizer this year but got most of my leafs cleaned up. Also can you recommend a decent blue grass mix seed?
There's a starter fertilizer from Scott's that has a weed pre-emergent in it or you can buy a chemical called Tenacity and spray it. I get seed at Seed Super Store online.
Very well done, Ryan! Always good to be prepared.
Thanks Ryan I never put down fall/winter fertilizer before and was wondering when was best, Milorganite recommends late November but that seemed kind of late. And it doesn't have K so wasn't sure if I should use it or not. Just ordered Scotts Winterguard from Amazon and will wait for temps in 40's.
Cool. Milorganite calls that their dormant feeding because really it actives next season as things come out of dormancy but I would rather use something that can be available to the plant right away.
We hit in the 80s here in PA this week. Back to fall next week.
Wilhelm Shultz ....”I see NUTH~ ING”😂
Hey Ryan, thanks for the video. Any chance you might be able to speak to some of the other considerations for winterizing your lawn besides fertilizing? For example, should my last mows before snow be keeping the grass long, short? Does it matter?Any other things like that would be super helpful. Thanks again for the great videos, really, really helpful.
Sure...begin to bring your grass down a couple notches from where you normally mow if you can. Essentially just try not to let it look shaggy or be too long to where snow can mat things down and cause the potential for snow mold. Other than that it's just mow regularly until things stop growing naturally, and that's about it.
Awesome Ryan, thanks!
Thoughts on leave mulching vs rake and dispose? Live in a mountain with a ton of trees and leave removal is crazy annoying. Generally I run my mower on mulch setting and then a second run with bag to get some off lawn. What do you think?
Leaf* gotta love autocorrect
I mulch them into oblivion if at all possible
Used the fall turf food two days ago and only used roughly enough product to cover 6000 sqft equally over my 7200 sqft lawn. Used my spreader with less than the recommended bag rate and now I’m seeing some yellow grass tips. Any thoughts? I’m in WI with temps in the mid 40s now.
That's usually a little bit of frost burn. I'm assuming with temps in the 40s you are getting frost at night?
What is your watering schedule & would “milo” work great for fertilization?
Milo does not work as well in the cold that we are running into in the mid to late fall. That would be the reason I recommend synthetic fertilizer at this point.
Hi Ryan, was wondering how you get the different colors when you mow? Diamond shape or stripes, your lawn is dark and light.
Just search lawn striping and one of my videos should be the first one in the search results where I explain it
did you get some snow last night?
Can you winterize even if it may need aeration, but can't get it aeration. 10/10/2020. Thanks
I’m living in texas so don’t know when is a good time to fertilizers for my lawn ? Thank you 🙏
I live in Texas too. We don't have a consistent season haha.
Hi, my lawn never gets fed. I want to start somewhere. I live in southern CA, and my grass is yellow with a little green. Not a lot of bare spots. So the temperatures are in the high 60's n at the end of this week they're trending up. What can I do now to help it turn green for the spring or at least feed it properly? Thank you
I have a free guide and more info here that might help you simplelawnsolutions.com/blogs/news/ryanknorr
What number do you put it on weed spreader
When you winterize the lawn with fertilizer is it also good to use a combination fertilizer weed preventer?
I don't usually use the weed control fertilizer as I like to take care of any weeds by targeting them with spraying. However, I also have very few weeds at all so it's not really needed in my yard.
i live in ontario canada and it was hot enough that folks had a/c on.
Can i add grass seed and a small amount of starter fert to this process? i got started a little late. Dethatched and aerated my lawn. Now i want to put 15lbs of Milo per 1000 on the soil along with seed and a small amount of fert. is that too much? Its oct 18th now in the midwest.
The seeding is too late at this point if you're in the midwest. Of course you can always gamble and try it but if I were using expensive seed I would wait. Otherwise fert will help a lot too on its own.
If I just layed new sod in mid September the grass is taking well. How soon after new sod is a winter fertilizer safe?
If you put sod down in September, you are about 45 days out. Fertilizer should be good to go anytime now. Just make sure to water it in or apply before rain
Hey Ryan - can I use my EqualizOrr for winterizing? It checks the quick release box but unsure if it’s the right fit for winterizing.
Not enough N going down for something like that. I would use ammonium sulfate or urea and water in
How do you cut it to look like squares
I have some weed and feed, not really interested in buying more fert for this year. Can I put that down? Also, I did a little overseeding.
Have you mowed the new grass a few times? If so then yes you can
Not yet
You should do a vid on final cut height for winter. Heard short, long, medium... in lost. (KC area)
Do you have fescue?
@@ryanknorrlawncare rye and some blue grass. I think it was sod that was fescue originally but 2 seasons of overseeding it thik its more rye and blue grass. Its been overseeded with "Estate Mix" from the Grass Pad down here in KC.
Then you can bring it down a few notches from what you normally cut no problem. Just have it looking tidy and without grass long enough that it can lay over on itself easily. That's just to help prevent snow mold.
Hey Ryan, it’s in the 20-40 degrees here. Is there anything I can do for weeds in the winter?
I read some weed killers don’t work below 40. I’m hoping to use something a little more environmentally friendly but in the end I just want to get rid of them before spring
Not really at this point. The soil temps have to be higher to where they are actively growing.
@@ryanknorrlawncare thank you. Can you tell me at what temp I can start to kill the weeds and with what? Sorry if u have a video for this. I can look at it.
I’m new to having a lawn. Paid a lot last year and don’t have the money this year.
Appreciate the help. Your videos are done well.
Would you suggest the Scott's max green? They have a crazy sale at Home Depot for them.
Yep
GreenMax is one of my favorite fertilizers. Dropped some yesterday.
Yes---I had never noticed it before & last week -- bought 19 bags at $4.30 per/bag.
Now I have between 10 to 15 years worth, if I only use one bag per each fall app.
I have the label here in front of me from the pallet of 35 bags at Home Depot.
I normally use one app in the spring & one app in the fall, with Scotts Starter Fert
at $42.73 with Military Discount from Lowes. That's 85.00 per year plus 3 apps
of Miloganite,so I just cut my cost in half buying the Green Max.
They say it greens your lawn in 3 days, well it rained & mine is outstanding over night.
No one has darker green lawn in the entire city but me & I did 4,000 sq ft with 4/5 of
one bag.
Those 19 bags were $73.53 total--less then my usual two bags per year of starter fert.
Thanks for the timely tip. I got a great deal at Lowe's on Scott's Winterguard. Put it down today. Are you gonna insulate your shed? Some insulation and electricity and a ceramic heater and you can hang out there most of the winter.
I likely will in the future but not this year
Are you still going to make videos in the off season? (late fall & winter?) Maybe do Q&A videos.
I'll have to see what I am up to during the off season
Wow! I hope you dont go radio silent til Spring. Your videos are awesome.
@@ryanknorrlawncare Seconding ArmyFtBall's request. I'm in So Cal and would love to see some additional content during your off season. There is no o off season in So Cal and I've learned a lot from your videos.
Some people like other content and some don't if it's not lawn related. We'll see. I have another channel of my creative work that I might do more with over there.
So, I live in Missouri, and I just over seeded and put down some Milo and starter fert (Scott's)
I see 40s coming in pretty soon.
How long do you think I should wait after laying my starter fert.
2 to 3 weeks OK?
That should be fine
Is this different for different grass types? DOC claims that you wouldn't want to push growth when the lawn is going to go dormant. 🤔
This is for cool season grass
Can you do this by with a hand tool to spread the seed?
you need a seed.spreader
Does the winterizer from Menards need to be watered in? All of my hoses have already been put away.
Preferred but doesn't have to be. If you can apply before a rain that would be best case.
would the last fert app be a good time to put some humic dg down as well
sure and you can use that anytime really
Hi,
Is jobe’s organic lawn food hood for fall fertilizer? It doesn’t say ‘fall’ on the bag. But it’s content are 10-0-2..
That will be more of a slow release so I wouldn't use it too late in the season
1st time homeowner. Southern Indiana. Lawn looks like s***. Lots of weeds. Is this a good time to try to kill all the weeds? or should I just wait til spring?
It's getting a touch late but you can still try this season and see what happens
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care Thanks Ryan. How effective will liquid be if aeration is needed? Should I wait until its aerated? Love your videos and keystone light also ;)
Great advice!! Umm soo.... are you going to share how to “mow your snow” videos for the winter?? Lol I don’t know how we go for so long without lawn updates
I am not sure what winter will bring this year. I'm not ready yet!
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care lol we shall see
thanks for the great video Ryan! I'm gonna stop by Menards and pickup the same stuff. do you recommend having this watered in after application or just leave it?
Watering in activates things faster so it's always preferred
Just read from the LCN that you could also use Walmart's 10-10-10 Fertilizer. would you think that would be better than using the Menard's product?
Heard that nitrogen is very mobile in the soil, how can it be stored to be used in d spring, don't get it,can you pls explain further?
Quick release synthetic goes directly into the grass plant
When do winterize in central Texas where the temps are still in the 90's in mid October?
You likely have a warm weather grass. I imagine Ryan has cold weather grass. It may be a very different process. Look up "USDA hardiness zones"
@@dam7196 I have St. Augustine grass.
@@greggrimsley5337 that's some thick stuff! Definitely a warm season grass. I can't help you there. Sorry buddy.
Do I have to fertilize???
