  • This is not only the reason why winterizing a lawn is necessary but more importantly, this is how to winterize a lawn the smart way...or dare I say, the correct way.

    So many different theories out there on winterizing. I have a bunch of Lesco 24-0-11 that I didn't end up using this season, so I'm just gonna throw that down as my winterizer this year. Do you think it's okay to go a little heavy with it?

    You're doing a wonderful job and we are learning so much from you. You are my go-to for natural and organic Lawn counseling!
    I have something I would like to run by you and perhaps it is as simple as a response or you make a video about the subject. I have been experimenting with human urine on my lawn and have been getting pretty good results. I mix it 5 to 1, use a large 55 gallon barrel, and drop a small pump into it and apply it with a garden hose. I've done it about three times this fall as my nitrogen boost for my root growth and prep for winter. Do you think you could talk a little bit about the subject? I'd like to know what you think of it, what it does and doesn't do, and how to do it properly, and when.
    Thanks for everything, Dan in Northwest Ohio.

    I had a problem with my fescue laying down, last week I started raking in the morning while the grass was damp, then I would cut in the afternoon, I did 4x last week cutting at 2.5 on the 5th cut I made a mistake and cut at 2in , I like the way it looks nice and even no more laying down grass, I applied ammonia, we had a good day of rain Sunday the weather is still warm, a few bare spots and brown spots, I'm going to try to spot seed, I live in the NorCal Bay area.

    I just use Milorganite and only Milorganite is that bad for my soil. I can’t remember where I read that your lawn may get “addicted” to Milorganite if that’s all you apply year after year. Great video and thanks for sharing.

    I've started some lite doses of organic fert now, not really to get a lot of top growth, but just to keep my soil microbes and fungi as active as possible to break down all the tree leaves that I mulch in .... pretty much by the time the ground freezes/snow cover I'd want those leaves 'eaten' by the soil, so I keep mowing, sometimes every day as the leaves fall - it might seem excessive(as I'm not really trimming grass growth) but I feel that it is way easier than raking, plus it keeps the yard looking way better and allows sun and air to get to the grass blades in the last days before dormancy
    I guess dried leaves don't really have a huge amount of nutrition left in them(I think only green leaves still have nitrogen?) just some micros, but there must be some carbon, and I feel directly sequestering that into the soil is better than doing the city 'leaf pickup' which much of that will escape back into the atmosphere when the city lets them decompose in whatever/where ever/if they compost them

    Was just thinking of doing on last fertilizer push and watering before temps dip down below freezing this weekend...not sure why but gonna get real cold at night here in the high desert...but will bounce back the following week to about 40s...

    Always enjoy the retro videos Brian! Pertinent no matter where you are! I overseeded but am reluctant to fertilize for fear of slowing down the seed production. Would Scotts Fall lawn food be okay to apply?

      that's crazy! we're barely hitting 70 right now but we do have another 80 in the forecast this week. I'm still wrapping my head around the weather where I live now. Last year we were in the 20's overnight in Oct before we moved and now we never really drop below 40 at any point during winter. Weird.

    Thanks for another very informative video, Brian! I have one bit of advice to ask related to this, though I think I know the answer given one or two other videos you have done. I have an unopened bag of Milorganite. Could I use this for winterization, or should I wait until the early spring for that (and use something like Scotts Natural Lawn Food instead)? And a related question, what exactly do you mean by 'early spring' for someone who lives in New Jersey? Do you mean like mid to late March to apply Milorganite?

    I have a cool season lawn in the great lakes area. The current winter forecast gives us good odds of a warmer and drier winter. Right now we have some wild temperature swings (frost Yesterday, 70 tomorrow). Does any of this change what I should be doing to winterize my lawn?

      It's all about soil temps, track them manually with a soil thermometer or online with Greencast Soil Temp maps (Google it). This video ca give you more context on temps and fert in the lawn th-cam.com/video/HSFHGc4anZo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=YA6qpJTS_28-7PCM

    I would not put down an organic the late in the year that is a waste. You need heat so the microbes can break it down. It won't be available in early spring either not warm enough yet. You are better off using a synthetic in the fall just back up when you normally winterize. I use Ammonium Sulfate mid Oct at the latest at a medium rate about .5 lbs per 1000.

    Would November be a good time to put down Sea Kelp products?

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'd say if your soil temps are still in the upper 40's go for it but below 45 might not be worth it any more. At that point wait till end of winter when roots are looking to start growing again

    So, you seem to suggest organic works better. However, I just put down some Milorganite on the lawn in October and they seem to NOT breaking down at all. It actually seemed to have become a little like fungus on the lawn. So not sure what to believe anymore! 🙈

    I Could not have done a better job winterizing in terms of time, I cut short just shy of scalping and then threw down a load of slow release fert 24-6-17 or something like that and it snowed like a foot the very next day and its still snowing

      @TurfMechanic  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow, a foot in late Oct! You're in for a long winter! 😂
