Hi James, my first car was a Mini too. I was 17 in 1973 and I bought a 1963 B reg 850cc with push button start on the floor and a gear stick that felt a yard long with two or three bends in it. I Hand painted it Blue with paint that won't show brush marks (liars) and White Starsky & Hutch go faster stripes each side. Had to ask friends to get out going up steep lane in Clent Hills for 50yds and drove home (Birmingham then) from Bournemouth as it was too hot (after 7 days) with my now wife of 38yrs with the heater on ALL the way home as the temp guage was going off the needle - HAPPY DAYS!
My first car was a 1992 Vauxhall Cavalier SRI 8v, what a time! 18 yrs old, 2.0 136bhp but felt like a million. £1,500 to buy it VERY second hand and £1,800 to insure it 3rd party.. madness but some very good times were had
Just bought my first car a few months ago, a 2005 black Mini Cooper with a white roof - love it to bits. Nice reminder that if James started at the same place as me, then hopefully I’ll get to drive the same caliber of cars as him in years to come, nothing is out of reach!
First car was an astra van circa 1988. My dad sprayed it in whitewash and when I hit a gate post we got a sledge hammer and sorted that dent. Excellent car to learn and play about with. Still remember my first drive after passing my test. 20 years later and 23 cars later I took my motorcycle test and enjoyed the speed of 1000cc plus bikes. Never underestimate the thrill of driving. Hope that's never taken away from us. 😀
Collecting my new mini cooper JCW kit fitted inside and out fitted.... today... Sooo excited this will be my second mini to own... Love these little cars...
MINI's are great! My first car was a 2005 MINI Cooper S and I can still hear the sound of the compressor whining through the interior. Moved on (to a M135i) since then, but a MINI will always have a special place in my heart. If I'd ever have the luxury of owning multiple cars, a MINI would definitely be in the garage! Have fun on your hot hatch trip!
My first attempt at passing my drivers failed miserably and I felt absolutely horrible, shortly after I retook the test and passed. I can still remember that blissful moment where the instructor said I had passed. Right after, I met my gf to tell her the news and she literally had tears of joy, she was that happy for me. I don't think I'll ever forget that moment
I'll never forget my first drive. I was just driving to collage but I loved the fact that I wasn't being judged anymore. Nobody was sitting next to me with a clip board, counting how many times I check my mirrors or if I was holding the wheel right. It was freedom!
Passed my test a month ago, nothing better for me! Having my own freedom is amazing and no I’m not in a fancy car, a 2004 Renault Megane to be truthful but I love it. Great video MR.JWW
there is so much i can relate to when you say driving alone in the car to wherever you wish to is just one of those precious personal time we can get in this fast-pace lifestyle. For me, I would occasionaly park the car and just sit in the car with the engine off and that time of the day is just so calm that you wouldn't notice how fast time flies by.
I have a Mini JCW F56 and it is an awesome little car. My car has the bluetooth exhaust the salesman talked about and it sounds like a little touring car or rally car. SO SO much fun! You will love it James.
I have fond memories of my first car - 1992 Subaru Justy 1.2 GLII 4WD which I past my test in. Having my first car, I could go where I wanted, listen to what I wanted - I have a real sense of freedom.
My first car was a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 250 hp 290tq front wheel drive with straight piped exhaust. You could hear me coming from a mile away. Heads up display, faux leather seats and a big four door sedan. It was loud, shouty, comfy and it felt like it could go 300mph. First cars in the first years of driving is the best feeling in the world. Nothing but freedom and trouble.
My first car was a 1978 ford fiesta 1.1 ghia! It was white with fakes wood inside and I loved it. I used to go driving for hours on my own, I maxed it on a dual carriageway and did hand brake turns in the snow. It was a bit of a heap but I loved it!
Wow, James. Hearing your '1st Car Story' takes me back to mine n' all those same feelings. The freedom, the time alone, or with friends. And your comment about your 1st accident, so true! You learn SO MUCH from all those 'first's', in each of our lives. They shape us. For me it was an older model Honda Accord, manual. Such good times! Thx for this one, mate.
I have had the pleasure of owning 3 Mini Cooper hatchbacks. My husband got me the R60 for my 3rd year anniversary because I am obsessed with these cars. I am loving the bigger car. I till own my 2005 which need a lil bit of work. I just need more room. My husband never gave the car much thought but he loves them now. I can't keep him out of it!
AP MHIYT I agree man, for me the front is a bit excessive and it could do without all the fake grills in the back, not to mention (from viewpoint of the front) THE FRONT LEFT SIDE GRILL IS FAKE BUT NOT THE RIGHT?!?! WTF ASYMMETRY?!?!
I learned to drive and passed my drivers test in a Mini. It is such a fun car to drive making it a really good car to enjoy every second of learning to drive!
I just bought a mini and it does put a smile on my face every time I drive it. And everything you said about the first car is so true love the video thanks.
That’s cool! I bought a Golf GTI Clubsport couple of months ago and it’s one of the best cars ever for daily use! 👍🏼👍🏼 Enjoy the Mini and have fun driving around the UK! 🙏🏻
Can't believe you uploaded this topic on my birthday! This made my day James! As it is my birthday my dad promised to take me on a parking lot (empty bug surface of course) and teach me how to drive a manual at 15 years old! We took grandmas 2015 Peugeot 208 as dad's btw is an automatic, and that car put a smile on my face when I shifted to 2nd gear for the first time in my life! I loved it! Can7T wait for more hope hatch videos from this tour!
Hey James. I passed my driver's test with my Mom's Toyota starlet in Uganda, which was a 4 door hatchback. However, my own first car was a 2 door hatchback Proton Satria which I had in Malaysia. I've had very similar memories with that car, such as driving about with friends, my first crash, numerous road trips, turning down the music to figure out what the unfamiliar noises were, late night trips to McDonald's for a snack and so much more. Sadly I had to sell the car after just one year. Memories of the first car are the most special ones....
I had my first few driving lessons in a mini cooper, was a hell lot of fun but not that reliable. now I´ve got a 2016 vw beetle and I love it, for a 19 year old its just perfect
I've just passed my test, 1st time pass so even happier and it's such a good feeling. Now I truly feel mature and like an adult knowing I have the potential to drive myself anywhere. And the test was actually fun as most of the test route was on carriage ways and driving at 50/60 rather than city 20mph and the examiner and I had a great conversation the for the full 40mins
I passed my driving test almost 3 years ago and my first and current car is a VW Up. It's got 65 bhp so you really have to wring its neck to get some speed out of it but it is a fun car that likes being driven in a sporty way. Hopefully once I finish uni and get a job I can start saving up for my first sporty car and I'm fairly certain it'll be a hot hatch so very excited to see the content from this tour!
Really enjoyed hearing about your first car, got me reminsicing over my 1.2 Corsa i started with! Only had my new car 2 months or so now, but when i see another blacked out Corsa like the old one i always smile a little at the memories of it!
My first car was a mini too, but as I'm older than you guys, mine was a rover mini, 998cc of mayhem! I loved that car, even with its problems, like not really wanting to start when the weather turned cold.
I passed my test at the start of this year, and I remember how absolutely ecstatic I was on the way back. Sure, my car was only a little 1.6 Micra but on that day it felt like nobody could be better off. It gets better though, learning more about the car's behaviour, it's character and even it's downfalls as you add more miles to your tally, in my case on the back roads on the University run!
It’s been 3years since I’ve taken mine (in Portugal we’re required to be 18 in order to drive) and I still remember it like it was yesterday Just two hours later I took my C3 to the hills with my grandpa in order to drive on the mountain-side roads that I’ve known since I was a child.. The C3 is now my daily for Uni and I still love it to death (beside its countless and I mean countless cons) thanks to the spec my grandfather chose and the fond memories Also love my father’s Civic, a true driver’s cars for its price-point! FK2 Sport I plan on keeping the C3 forever in my garage. Means the world to me and I hope to someday teach my son/daughter how to drive it just as my grandfather taught me in it
I drive a 14 year-old Renault Kangoo. I can bring along a football team and dozens of fans or just casually 52(!!) crates of beer. Had the best memories with the worst soundsystem, the most comfortable gearbox in the world (I've driven about 35 cars by now, it's still my favourite!) And I always enjoy getting back into it. Now that's a memory I'll never forget!
My first car is a 2014 Citroen C1 Airscape Flair. I only passed in February though so I am still driving it, however I love it and don’t want to ever give it up.
Amazing video man! Got my license in September. Actually just bought my first car about a month back. Guess what! It's an R53 Cooper S John Cooper Works! I've never smiled as much in a car as when I'm in that beauty. It's just got so much character! That compressor sound is literally addicting
I passed my test august last year and my first car which I still have was a silver 59 plate mini cooper D which the big 17 inch cooper s wheels and the air con and it's great, which I have now de-chromed mostly, window tinted and a spoiler extension and I remapped it too but it is literally perfect I love it my smiles per mile are all of the smiles it makes me laugh and smile and it is great especially when you pull up next to a car with a much bigger engine the car is much bigger and then you just dissapeare ☺️👌🏽 it's great
My very first car I bought just after i got my licens, was a Fiat Cinquecento Sporting. Especially the "sporting" is important! It was red, got red seatbelt and got sport-seats that were checkered. In danish tax- standards, the closest i could get to a Cooper. It was fun and raw - a real gokart with 54hp. It was laughter for almost 800 km - before everything went wrong.. A chaotic dream - or nightmare - of a first dream car. But I still loved that car for the personality. It was so much more special than the yaris I am driving now, even though the yaris is the best and most reliable car I could imagine. I totally get the feelings you got for the mini!
Me too... I didn't go down the John Cooper Works path, I have a Stage 2 Mini Madness upgrade, sports exhaust, H&R suspension upgrade, wheels / tyres, big brakes etc. It wins my smiles per miles award and it takes a determined M3 to beat it in a stop light grand prix. I've never owned one so possibly a GTI comes close, but the best pocket rocket available in North America.
My first was a 1993 Jeep Wrangler YJ. My grandmother started teaching me to drive stick when I️ was 12, and promised that if I’d learn, she would give it to me. She kept her promise!
I'm in the process of learning to drive, been driving for over a year with my permit and about to get my license soon, pretty exciting! I'm learning in my dad's 2016 VW Passat, it's a real nice car 👌
James I'm so pleased your experiencing what I do everyday! I was fortunate to buy the very 1st demo car from our dealer so it had everything bar self parking and sunroof. Heads up display is brilliant but the Bluetooth exhaust switch is a must!! I normally change cars every 6-8 months but I've had the JCW nearly 2 years!!!!! Enjoy your road trip. PS. the manager at Mini told me, if you get over 30mpg I have to bring the car back, as I don't deserve to own a JCW. I get 22-26mpg :-D :-D
Great stuff James! Passing my test feels like a long time although it wasn't THAT long as it was 2011. I passed first time with just 3 minors and my first car was a 2001 FIAT Punto ELX with a naturally aspirated 1.2 litre engine. It was good fun to drive (when it was working) and I too, had that cassette tape with the MP3 attachment. After around 9 months of having the car, it kept going wrong so in the end I got a brand new Renault Clio. The Punto was meant to be part-exchanged, but a week before I was due to pick up the Clio, the power steering went on the Punto. As a result, the dealer offered me next to nothing. So in the end I sold it privately and rather bizarrely, a chap came all the way from DEVON (I live in South London) to buy it, knowing that it had now power steering... I think I sold it for £350 in the end. I would love to know if it's still on the road, I still remember the numberplate, so when I see an old, rather battered Metallic Grey Punto, I always check the plate out of curiosity.
My first car was/is a Audi S3 8L, and I feel exactly how you described it. So many memories, so much fun, so much to learn about the roads.. amazing experience and hopefully the start of some real petrolhead-activities :)
+Mr JWW James, that's awesome. You could set up another road trip to the southern hemisphere mid winter with TH-camrs. it's summer there, as you know. That would be pretty cool too. Maybe Argentina and Brazil... go meet Massa, Piquet, Senna, Barrichello, Castroneves, etc. They used to get together and go-kart every year with Schumacher.
We have a 3 door hatch Cooper S in the same colours, awesome car, and I had an original Mini Cooper S in black in the 80's... (we also have a Paceman Cooper S and did have a Clubvan)
Ahhhh start learning to drive in mid March..... in my families mini from 2005 I believe.... white mini JCW. I can’t wait and happy to see mini being the car of choice 😝👌🏼
I love driving, I have a reliable Skoda Fabia - learned so much about driving and the roads in it and it is a magical experience, the dream is to own a Focus RS or a F-Type one day for cutting about the amazing Scottish roads
This salesman is absolutely brilliant. If everyone showed that kind of passion for their jobs the whole world would be happy.
Salesman knows his Mini's. He is very passionate about it.
how fast can the salesman talk, my god
Looks like he's had 7 cups of coffee this morning
0 to 60 words in 5 seconds. Lol
A true northerner
It’s so you can’t take in the T&C’s lol
Or a few nose beers
Currently learning to drive and loving it a lot.
Mini JWW!
thought the same
Passed my test last month, great experience and the feeling of freedom is so good!
MINI JCW = MINI JWW
Great video as always James!
HERO! Choosing the best option for your trip!
My first car is a mazda miata from 1991. Love it, drive it everyday. Can’t get rid of it. Don’t wanna lose it. Love your work james!

He was talking so slowly! What are you guys on about?
R1Z1 yes but your a knob
Probably explained all that more than 500 times now... He would be a great auctioneer.

James talking about the aux FM transmitter like it is a million years old, while Sam is still doing that today in his 360!

Nice to hear that your first car was a Mini too. I just bought my first car, an F56 Cooper S with JCW aero kit. I’m collecting it this Wednesday.
JCW is so grateful that can absolutely catch all people's attention.
not such a huge fan of this generation of minis, but if you enjoy it, i hope for a fun trip! waiting to see your videos along with Paul's and Sam's !
Everyone saying he talks fast, I understood every word. Passionate brand, passionate sales people.
I learned to drive and passed my drivers test in a Mini. It is such a fun car to drive making it a really good car to enjoy every second of learning to drive!
I just bought a mini and it does put a smile on my face every time I drive it. And everything you said about the first car is so true love the video thanks.
First car was a Seat Leon and i made 150k km in 4 years, so many stories with that car! Took me everywhere and so reliable !
So good when you guys do videos like this. It’s often more interesting seeing cars that I may probably be driving in a few years after uni. Keep it up

I just passed my test and have a lovely Mini Cooper 2003 so much fun to drive! Feels like a proper little sports car :)
MINI represent!
I just switched one of my cars to a JCW! Love the popping noises, fun little car, steering isn't bad
I drive a 14 year-old Renault Kangoo. I can bring along a football team and dozens of fans or just casually 52(!!) crates of beer. Mini for my first car, absolutely amazing, so much fun! Passing your test is complete freedom
you're gonna love the jcw. I've driven them a lot recently and they never disappoint
Started driving 1 year ago. Have a 2012 corolla with broken suspension bad handling and very bad tires but I love it

Yes, i own one as well, so much fun to drive, and exceptional driving with this pocket rocket!

I'm currently learning to troll... And I'm loving it. In already building up great memories
JWW and STG, yes. with SOL, no. Nice video m8.
I passed my test last month and have the same generation cooper as you had. Love the car!
Actually bought my first car a couple weeks back and passed test the other day :) so now I am a proud owner and driver of a Audi TT :)
I'm in the process of learning to drive, been driving for over a year with my permit and about to get my license soon, pretty exciting! I'm learning in my dad's 2016 VW Passat, it's a real nice car 👌
I got a chuckle out of listening to the conversation about how rough the audio was in years past. My fist car only had AM radio with one speaker.
Awesome car!!! Anyone else amazed by how fast the guy from Mini spoke? xD
Awesome video James, really looking foward onto this new adventure!
Been a huge fan of the mini. My dad used to have a mini cooper in the same colour as James’s.
Got my test on the 18th of December. So excited 😁
Im learning and really want a JCW in the future ! Have fun all
Paul, sam and james are actually the next top gear
I'm learning to drive in a Mini Cooper and now I really want one!
I'm still about 5 months away from being able to drive, but I'm definitely looking forward to it.
Yes mrjww we need more hothatch content.
I love driving, I have a reliable Skoda Fabia - learned so much about driving and the roads in it and it is a magical experience, the dream is to own a Focus RS or a F-Type one day for cutting about the amazing Scottish roads
Woah I'm really fast this time!! I know its going to be great video as always James. Keep up the banging content!
