The level of "doing it right" depends on how much money a home owner has and how much they are willing to spend. People aren't spending $100,000. for a kitchen in a track home when the house can only sell for $350,000.
@@chrisanthony579 Always been my issue with his show. Agree with everything he stands for but I have watched some shows when the “fix” obviously would cost a fortune and there is no mention of how it all was payed for. These people received 7,000 from the case- that kitchen remodel cost many times that.
@@itomba I know sometimes the show gives stuff for free, often Mike will say something like "We gave you a free dishwasher" as they tore out the old one. Not sure what the home owners pay but I can only imagine it's a fraction of the cost. I know in one episode they talked about how the work was 200k, on a 300k house. In now way would that be worth it to most home owners. It is one the reasons the housing market is bad as it is. He showed me how they were changing it and then he showed me the upstairs bathroom….for years, there was always, what we thought was a leak, coming from the roof. NOPE! For whatever reason, he ran the bathroom vent right into the flat roof rafters!!! There was so much mold and black wood where the moisture was being pumped into a space between some 2x8s or 2x10s. We don’t know why. He was notoriously cheap and we assume he didn’t want to pay for the roof vent? Or maybe it was taken out when he fixed the roof? Next they should select a personal-injury attorney and sue the party that left the solvent in the water bottle. That boy deserves compensation for his fear and pain. Also, any expenses the family had should be reimbursed.
I don't know, they admitted they knew there was a mess and didn't take any steps to remedy the situation. How many kids randomly drink from containers on the kitchen top? I think they might not want their lack of supervision brought into question.

General contractor/remodeler for 35 years...Those cabinets look like cabinets that you assemble...They're always junk...Nice seeing the pro kitchen guys fixing it up! Looked sweet finished!
I heard of somebody who had their cabinet fall off the kitchen wall. That is something else that needs to be done "better than standard". Who knows who will overload their cabinets with too many heavy plates or cans of food? Make sure all cabinets are solidly anchored.
I can’t believe the company left that stuff in the water bottle, and the poor child had to endure that. The audacity of them not to even check on the child little alone to leave the kitchen like that and take their money.
decanting things like lacquer thinner into old water bottles is common place. However, it should have been labelled as per WHMIS and, especially in a reno, put away during the end of day clean up.
I remember when this happened maybe, oh, 15 years ago. I was appalled by the contractor not even calling to see if the kid was alive. All kids are stupid when it comes to drinking out of anybody’s or rather, everybody’s half drunk bottle of water or soda. My son used to drive me crazy. Now, after Covid 19, I don’t think anyone is drinking out of other’s drinks. Need to add THANK GOD FOR MIKE HOLMES! He got some money back for these kind people.
Most everybody, if they haven't destroyed their immune system by getting the unsafe and rushed jab, would have ample natural immunity by now, so why should drinking after each other's drinks, be changed or relevant now? Hard to imagine how any installers could be so incredibly incompetent or non-caring. Doors do not even open properly?
Just to remind the folks: Varsol is a white spirit/mineral spirit, aka Mineral Turpentine. It's used primarily as a paint thinner and used for cleaning oil-based paint off of paintbrushes. So glad that the family won the case against the contractor, and that Caleb lived through it all.
Mike knows what he is talking about I’ll give him that. There is one thing I wish he would do a show on. The challenge of dealing with impatient people that use the smallest flaws and use this to run down the contractors and the trades they hire. We don’t always get it right the first time and very often redo the work ourselves before we are done. I’m willing to bet that sometimes the trades put a customer at the bottom of the list because they just cannot completely finish the job faster than the customers demands permit and can get cash flow somewhere else. I know I sound like the kind of trades person that is being described in this video but there are always two sides in these situations. Do a video on that.
I LOVE watching Mike & his crew tear apart other people's screw ups, but I'm curious on this one: Normally he's so detail oriented; so why miss removing the base boards before putting down the floor tiling?
Glad wee one ok in the end. Nasty mistake from the installer. What’s that product you laid the tiles on…? I have tiles on MDF board. Cracking is a problem…
putting solvent into a water bottle is just plain stupid, it was bad that in this case the child was injured. But really it could have been anyone, not being familiar or in the know with the practice and ….
Kraft Maid cabinets are great stuff like 3 levels, I got the middle stuff solid maple everything, installed by a guy who knew what he was doing. Self closing drawers, all solid wood, great stuff
After one renovation he went into he called the city inspectors, who brought their engineers and ended up condemning the house. It had to be torn down and rebuilt, and Mike rallied his sub contractors and suppliers to yelp bring the cost down as the couple was struggling due to hubby recently becoming limited to z wheelchair. They built a beautiful 2 story flat roof home, fully accessible with a roof top garden. He gave the homeowners a copy of the walk thru inspection video and said he often does that as owners will take the previous contractor to court.
Fillers aren't a requirement next to a dishwasher as long as the spacing of the cabinets is correct and the dishwasher is set properly. As for the microwave, there is something weird going on there. Either the microwave is shallow or the cabinets are deeper than the norm. The door to most OTR microwave usually sticks out past the cabinetry. This is why it is critical when designing a kitchen to know what the dimensions of all appliances are.
Judging by the very low end cabinets, laminate countertops, and bad design, it’s obvious they also hired the cheapest contractor. Also, why was the boy left unsupervised in a construction area? There is more to this story.
Question, for the microwave installation with that bracket. What are you suppose to do, if the studs don’t line with with the holes in the bracket? Nail in a piece of wood into studs, and use that as your stud? But if you use a 2x2 the microwave comes out 2inches.
as a cabinet installer two questions if they are living in the house , are there kids and or pets ? safety is the only thing , clean the site at the end of day , tell them doors are just hung adjustments to come , the hardest part of any job is the last 10% but it’s always a challenge when they are living in it !

Mike Holmes is a unique and rare breed. He does things right, follows building codes and is very knowledgeable about safety and PPE. He always criticizes the idiots that causes hard working people to lose their hard earned money. There should be a law allowing him and other competent contractors to “NAME THE NAMES” of these crooks that have no business being contractors…carpenters, electricians, plumbers, landscapers, stone masons. There are laws on the books to stop this abuse, but why are the idiots still doing this over and over again? Well, off the record real contractors should have the freedom and the right to inform potential customers to stay away from known con artists. It would be a consumer PSA ad to warn about fraudulent contractors. Mike…keep up the good work. We need more like you, your kids and your partners in the construction-building industry.

$7500?? I know this is probably over a decade ago but still. Negligence from a company like that resulting in the poisoning of my son?! I would have cleaned them out and then again after Mike's after-teardown assessment.
They went to small claims court. That's what it said on the sign in front of the building at 7:23. So the judgement was never going to be a huge settlement. I live in WA state. I just checked. The limit for small claims in WA state is $10,000 in 2023. I don't know where they live or when this occurred, but likely they sued for the maximum allowable in small claims. Also, as taken from personal injuries web site... Most states' small claims courts allow personal injury lawsuits, but don't award pain and suffering compensation. So, since the damages to the boy were apparently not long-term or permanent, I suspect that as bad as the incident was, it was probably unlikely that it would result in a substantial settlement, so it was probably not worth pursuing in a big personal injury case. The financial and emotional cost and time involved with a potential lawsuit (to the family) was likely not worth the potential settlement amount. I'm not a lawyer, but I suspect this was the case.
Leaving the toxic liquid in a water bottle in the kitchen where a child could drink it is criminal level negligence & whoever did it should have been arrested, prosecuted, and ordered to pay restitution.
My hope is that the first company should be ordered by the judge to make a financial payment not just for the Kitchen they failed to do right, but for the hospital bills following the poisoning of the young boy!!! I think Jail is in order for leaving chemicals in a drinking bottle around anyone!! Thank God for this man and his sense of morals couple with strong work ethics.
Mike Holmes is a CLASS ACT!
The honey glaze cabinets look good with the stainless appliances and counter top coloring
Mike is the best at what he does great guy ❤
I used to watch Mike Holmes several years ago when I had a TV to watch! Do agree that Mr Holmes does know what he's doing and very very Professional at what HE Does do!
Next they should select a personal-injury attorney and sue the party that left the solvent in the water bottle. That boy deserves compensation for his fear and pain. Also, any expenses the family had should be reimbursed.
Nah. He's good...
@@243wayne1 fr fr hes fine people needa stop suing people
You’re whats wrong with society, people don’t need to be suing people for a mistake… the boy is fine he doesn’t deserve money for fear and pain lmao
I don't know, they admitted they knew there was a mess and didn't take any steps to remedy the situation.
How many kids randomly drink from containers on the kitchen top?
I think they might not want their lack of supervision brought into question.
OMG. Glad the boy is ok. I hope they got some major money out of the contractor
this is the second time i have seen a slate installer make the same mistake.never use vegetable oil for a sealer.when it gets old it becomes gummy and goes rancid.mineral oil is the best
Rock on Mike, You got the job done and its over the top again for that family.
Kid learned a valuable lesson don't drink anything unsealed and don't share drinks. It's something I was taught from a young age.
Done right, thank you!!!!
General contractor/remodeler for 35 years...Those cabinets look like cabinets that you assemble...They're always junk...Nice seeing the pro kitchen guys fixing it up! Looked sweet finished!
General contractor/remodeler for 87 years and I agree.
@@Tablesaw818 Ah nuts, my zero fell off...It's 350 years as a remoderler...
I wish I could mind-meld with Mike Holmes!!
I discovered Mike many years ago and changed a great many of my construction practices. What happened to their son in 100% negligent.
Level, square, AND plumb. Your killing me here.
The new kitchen is lovely, but that counter is gorgeous.
Get them Mike!!! The little boy was dying!!! I truly hope they paid for all the medical bills! Be kind to each other. Stay safe. Love to all
this was Mike's best crew!
I LOVE watching Mike & his crew tear apart other people's screw ups, but I'm curious on this one: Normally he's so detail oriented; so why miss removing the base boards before putting down the floor tiling?
This was back before he financed everything through his production company and had limited resources
@@SHKEKEKE Doesn't really answer the question though. But I think I figured i out....
Glad wee one ok in the end. Nasty mistake from the installer. What’s that product you laid the tiles on…? I have tiles on MDF board. Cracking is a problem…
Shluter Ditra (sp?) It's a tile backer to prevent cracking from floor movement. Get it at home Depot.
keep em coming
Well done the kitchen is look beautiful
putting solvent into a water bottle is just plain stupid, it was bad that in this case the child was injured. But really it could have been anyone, not being familiar or in the know with the practice and ….
Never in 40 years of kitchens and building have I ever seen 5/8 plywood on any side of a custom cabinet.
Mike when are you coming to Anchorage Alaska? Hundreds of 50+-year-old buildings with renovations on top of cast iron drain pipes and knob wiring.
This is insane, I can't believe how the kitchen company left that kitchen 😳, just denting the refrigerator alone is 3rd world stuff...
Ok, kept looking & barsol can either be a liquor or a chemical solvent. So glad the child is ok!♥
Judging by the very low end cabinets, laminate countertops, and bad design, it’s obvious they also hired the cheapest contractor. Also, why was the boy left unsupervised in a construction area? There is more to this story.
If you’ve got kids you know how fast they can move. Blink of an eye and they’re gone.
Nice work
I love how you went to bat for this family!
You are the best.
Man, would I ever like to get Mike Holmes to come do my kitchen. The people that built this house in 1987 did shotty work.
OSH tech told us on how the show raving on about home surge protectors by Sycom, and installing them on the show, turns out a recall on them as they were catching fire
The uneven cupboard doors would have done my head in
Uneven cabinet doors are an easy fix. Euro hinges are fully adjustable. The problem was the cabinets were not installed level and plumb.
One thing for sure, that kitchen will outlive the rest of the house!
OK Mike, yes there need to be more people like you all I’ve had was not people like you but one thing I’m learning by watching. Is it maybe I need to look at the peoples tools cause you guys have got some interesting things like that laser level thing I’ve never seen that before so that’s telling me something.
Go get them Mike. I glad the kid is ok. They know not to mess with you..
I think Mike Holmes of all of them, is my very favorite and I am hoping that next year I can buy a house and contact him to come to Houston to do his magic for me....hear so many nightmare stories and despite I like a lot of people I've seen on TV, hoping he will say yes. SO THANKFUL that baby was ok....thank GOD!
I trust my instincts! IMO he is a man of high standards! I recall how many bad mouthed my father, most couldn't stand in his shadow! Honest, thorough, talented and a tremendous commitment to
accountability! Rare qualities in this quick buck world! Good luck Mike!
I HAVE THAT MAYTAG SET IN MY GARAGE, STOVE AND EVERYTHING STILL WORKS..
8k? That’s way to cheep even pre-Covid. They did not know what they were doing including estimating.
WOW SUCH ANCIENT FOOTAGE
Mike you complained about the draft but didnt show the fix . I got lost in the repair process. Editing?
You should be naming this company! People need to know who the shysters are. They have lost their case so you can't be sued for showing them up.
Disreputable companies will change the company name so they can stay in business.😢
Kind of surprised they won so comprehensively considering the owner told them to leave.
After there son nearly died they should of gone after the company you don't put dangerous chemical in a water bottle 😢😅
I'm 5 minutes into the video and if I had not heard the husband speak a couple of words I would have thought he was mute.
He finally started talking later in the video.
I'd love to see a show where bad contractors are in court and losing.
When you read the headline it makes it should like Mike was being sued
I remember while i was building my house, i took a pee in my empty gatorade bottle and i closed the top. I left it on the floor until the next day and it cooled off.
My brother took a drink.😂😂😂😂
If there were only a small percentage of contractors who had Mike Holmes knowledge and work ethics!!
i cant imagine just seeing a random water bottle and drinking from it, idk my parents taught me to drink from your own bottle and your own cup because everyone has germs. still sad what happend to the kid.
Yeah really
Is there going to be a problem setting chairs up to the kitchen island with the staggered height between the wooden and ceramic floors?
Only thing I would change is the sink. A larger, square, dual side, and stainless. Though the sink they have is nice.
i had to look up what varsol is. it's paint thinner.
We had a problem with one of our young family members who would drink anything she saw in a cup. We were very concerned that she would poison herself.
Floor step up and no crown molding kinda kills it. Why not make the soffit shorter to allow for the crown and the top?
My hope is that the first company should be ordered by the judge to make a financial payment not just for the Kitchen they failed to do right, but for the hospital bills following the poisoning of the young boy!!! I think Jail is in order for leaving chemicals in a drinking bottle around anyone!! As for Mike and his crew, they deserve to be commendated for their support and outstanding work, the house could have burnt down for the faulty electrical work!!
After the ice storm here the contractors who worked in my home never returned my phone call. The insurance be very rude about replacing my 11 windows which froze inside and out.
