In all honesty I really like the unbalanced team dynamic, and I mean that in the sense of their own abilities. Like they all work together very well, but it's clear that certain members can only pull so much weight given the situation. Yeah we don't see a lot wild team dynamics lately either works or not its still interesting to watch. Yellow girl is the range, reaper is the tank, red guy is the knight, and red girl is the melee/wolverine.
This seems like something they could honestly flesh out a lot more as they go on, right? I know they don't have voice acting and doing that is hard, but it'd be really fun if they could get a story going where, say, the red girl can get frustrated at being weaker than the others and get reckless or something. It'd be way easier to tell that story with dialogue, but even without it, I feel like something like that could be really neat to do. One other thing I'd want to see is the start of some form of plot to things, right? It's fine to just be fighting Grimm, but if they could get a little continuity in or imply they're trapped in a special place or show them getting something after defeating the Grimm then that would go a long way to letting them turn this into a real story. I don't think you would need much to do that, but it would open up a lot of intrigue that they could work off of.
And like, in the world of remnant. Aren't they pairing up students who are still learning? And people learn at different speeds. It's very interesting to see such a team that has characters that seem stronger than others to an incredible degree. They had that with Pyrrah's team, but they kinda lost it.. just a little.
It’s honestly sad how we haven’t gotten more grotesque or scary ass Grimm Design. These are supposed to be monsters, lean into that like Raxacory does. The Grimm have no sense of danger, these Grimm do. The more intense design, the more I actually feel threatened by them. If you wanna see some animation where the camera is used in very good ways, I recommend the Gilded Guy animations. He does mostly stick men animations, but they have so much personality and story in every single fight and animation. For first watch, I recommend the Slush Duel then the Gilded Guy story animations.
I'm still not over the atmosphere from this animation, the freakishly gorgeous Grimm designs, all of it is just the most nightmarish chef's kiss you could ask for. (edit: I meant the final trailer, lowkey didn't actually even know the older ones existed, so grazie Critter!)
It's really great to see imaginative monster designs. RWBY has a few gems like the Hound and the Apathy, but far too many are just dinosaurs covered in black goop. THIS is the horror element the show needs to make its antagonists feel scary again, and RT should hire Raxacory just for that.
As an arachniphobe I can say the giant tarantula grim is really good but I would have run from my computer screaming if it was thinner and sharper like a giant black widow

Honestly, it kinda reminds me of....I believe it was called "Void Stalker" (?) from The Secret World. It was this large, vaguely spider-like looking Thing, made out of black Slime, with these really thin, long Legs, and a Mouth full of Tentacles. I could never bring myself to willingly fight one of those Things because they look so creepy! And TSW was a Game where you fought against undead Octopus-Women and giant Moth Creatures in the first Town you enter!

I thought she was a fox for the longest time, and I love foxes more than squirrels but squirrels are still adorable and deserve more screentime. 9:20 I believe it's a "Fuuma Shuriken" 11:28 That's such a cute detail it almost overrides the overwhelming terror of these "Grimm"! Definitely the one that f***ed up the one girl's legs. That entire sequence was unnerving even just from this review. I found the Sunrise trailer for myself a while back, but the designs of the Grimm and the characters besides Dawn turned me off of watching the rest. Kinda gonna have to avoid them and future entries in Team DARK's future now. I just personally am not very fond of things that are too dark and edgey, especially when it goes out of its way to be as terrifying as possible. On a note more related to Dawn's design, details like tail movements are why I personally prefer animal characters to humans, even and especially when working with them myself. They force you to spend more time on your animation and drawings, but detailed tail movements are so great for expressing your characters' emotions even when the camera isn't on their faces and they're extremely cute on top of it! Additionally, they open up a ton of possibilities for combat and traversal animations, such as smacking the opponent with them, using them to keep your character's balance even when they do things that any human would fall over trying to do regardless of their grace and agility, or in some cases (like monkey tails) the character can grab things and swing around using their tail. And honestly? In my (admittedly very very limited) experience, tails aren't much harder or more tedious to animate than fingers.
Those grimm designs are great so glad I saw those animations before you covered them like the nightmare grimm is incredible. also adore the little details on the tarantula where it is mostly armor but the joints are unarmored as to allow freedom of movement.
I actually love that the fights in this have stakes. Like, Dawn's blade is shattered and Ash's legs are broken. And at the end of the nightmare animation we can really see how much energy Wraith has spent.
I know I'm late to the party, but giving the Grimm a Lovecraftian vibe was a stroke of genius. Really made them feel like a huge threat. But the real kicker here is the progression of the artist. Raith being the first animation and arguably the roughest turning into an honestly awesome living blender just makes me want to try my own hand at it.

I actually think it's an interesting team dynamic that there's an obvious gap in the team's skill levels but I definitely agree that Krimson feels more forgotten about than having been intentionally written to be out of the spotlight.
I really like how you analyze stuff, especially designs. I wonder if you'd ever consider analyzing vtuber designs with their rising popularity. I've seen so many unique and inventive designs and I'd love to see a breakdown on what works and what doesn't. Of course this is just a suggestion, I'd love to see just more desgin analysis in general cause I really enjoy watching you do so. Love your content and can't wait to see more of your stuff.
I like the idea of Team DARK being a team of skilled Huntsmen who Ozpin sends on secret missions hunting down monstrous Grimm. Like Oz has RWBY/JNPR (and formerly STRQ) being his main 'save the world' teams. but DARK is his secret team that that nobody knows about because what they face is... well, it's not going to help achieve world peace to say the least. With what little we know about DARK, there is alot of mystery, particularly in Raith, as if his existence is hidden in black ink.

One of the things that I noticed about Crimson is that his armor may be specifically designed to blend into his surroundings, which would make sense for hunting Grimm. Being harder to see is never really a bad thing when your prey can rip you apart if you aren't careful

And Dawn are the most different because they're closer to each other than the others. Like maybe she helped him with something in the past. This and all the fan animations just prove that Monty’s style of how to animate fights is still influential to this day. The way that certain heavy hitters are able to take down enemies on their own while others have to use teamwork to get through enemies is a nice touch

I feel like the four-hunter dynamic kind of hurts a lot of fan material; anyone who wants to throw their hat into this universe needs to come up with four OCs to get into the official systems of Remnant.
I feel like poor crimson could use a sawn off. The visual of a guy casually walking into a crowd of monsters and just no-sell their attacks while blasting terminator style would be both funny and cool.

It really feels like the creator might be playing favorites with Raith when he outshines another character's trailer in both design and choreography and does the most work in their first chapter as a team. Given how ridiculoisly edgy he looks compared to every other more grounded design, it really makes Raith feel like a "Coldsteel The Hedgeheg" level of self-insert OC.
I would like to animate my own rwby short one day, if given the opportunity. I already have some characters I have. While I have distanced myself from the Fandom, I do enjoy fan made creations such as animations, and even that Adam vs raven Manga
I could easily see this taking place in a post apocalypse Remnant where the Grimm have overrun nearly all of humanity, with few spots remaining for them to be safe, and even fewer teams. Team DARK is one of them: Krimson is like an honorable samurai or knight of the group, in regards to the latest trailer, and I think he may be supposed to come off as stoic and controlled, but yeah, needs more stuff to do and characterization, because he's really bland. Dawn is more of the heart of the group, keeping everyone together and trying to provide support to them all. May or may not have dealt with racists, but doesn't care, she has people to protect and a world to save. Ash is the fiery, punky badass chick who's also dealing with the grief of losing a very close loved one in the past, she sometimes annoys her friends with her more revealing outfits, but she doesn't care. Despite her punkish and fiery demeanor, she can be quite caring and loving in a calmer scenario. May or may not be bi. Raithe has the most traumatic backstory, as the reason he covers himself up from head to toe is because he suffered from immense physical trauma and injuries from a Grimm attack in his past, the likes of which took away the people he cared about. Ever since then, he lived for one thing, murdering Grimm, killing Grimm. Before he became part of the team, he was a lone wolf who didn't care if he lived or died, as long as he was taking Grimm down with him. It wasn't until he became part of the team that he found other people to live for again, and ever since then, he's vowed to make sure they live. Possibly the closest to Dawn, given that her telepathy may have let her see his past, which he likely allowed, possible romantic interest, although he probably wouldn't pursue it due to viewing himself as a freak and because of the Grimm. He's lightened up, but like the Goblin Slayer is with goblins, probably doesn't know what to do with his life outside of murdering Grimm, but he's getting there.
I gotta say, by the time the first actual episode of DARC drops, the combat is actually on the level of Volume One RWBY combat, or at the very least, the trailers.
If Original RWBY is Sonic, and 30 Days is Shadow, I feel SLVR is, uhh, Silver, haha! And DARK is more Gerald Robotnik instead of Doom's Eye. SLVR is kinda just RWBY but we don't know that much about it. DARK is dark like 30 Days, but unlike 30 Days where it's purposely being more violent, hence edgy like Shadow, DARK is more trying to survive in an unforgiving world of monsters trying to kill you. Now I'm writing this, I just realized, DARK doesn't really have any people fighting each other. Everyone's too busy with Grimm to care about factions! The actual world is more like an AU of Remnant instead of actually taking place in it. Like, compared to everyone else, I can _see_ the danger and possibility of anyone dying in DARK's vid. In fact, watch Raxacory's newest vid! It examples everything I just said!
I gotta say I hope Raxacory does more with Crimson. Because I was really sad that he change Crimson design and weapon from a Shield and an Axe to just a sword
To be honest, my personal critique is that the team seems very unbalanced. Raith is very much anime-protag levels of powerful and yet he's put on screen and compared to the other three, who can barely hold their own without him for very long. It seems that Raith is meant to be a solo character while everyone else acts as a way to go 'look how powerful he is! these three couldn't even put a dent in that and he just chopped its head off!' which doesn't work well with the RWBY team dynamic (each of these characters are strong but together is where they shine best). really, I feel it would work better if DARK was just a duo with Raith and someone else and they played off each other better or if Raith was just powered down a hair.
If this team were canon, they could work as an elite secret Black-Ops huntsman team made to handle missions that are too dangerous for standard Huntsmen and Huntresses to handle. Also I think that other girl in Ash's trailer might've been her sister.
I have to agree with Crimson being my least favorite. I don’t mean to sound rude when I say this but he feels like a copy-paste of Kirishima from My Hero Academia. Kirishima literally goes by “Crimson Riot”, has a similar red, spiky hair design, and Crimson’s semblance seems just like Kirishima’s quirk (where Kirishima hardens his skin to be very durable) as his aura envelops him to become sturdy and durable.
No, because we wouldn't have "Well maybe we were just tired of being pushed around!" Or, Penny reveling she's not a real girl. Or "Do you believe in destiny?" Or Nora and Ren 's heart to heart when they see the Knuklavee again. Or Ilia admitting she loved Blake. Or The Apathy arc on Brunswick farm. Or Ruby and Qrow talking about Summer. Or Penny's "I love you Dad."
Animations still in the early days of one's work really emphasize how some of the most important parts of animation aren't noticeable until they're gone. Clean, snappy movement and good weighting is absolutely crucial to a really good fight, but we only tend to notice (without looking for it) when it's done wrong.
You could always look to Bloodborne for inspiration they have have plenty of grotesquery. Like the bloodstarved beast. The one reborn (I am thinking that the corpses are still arguing which one should be Arse)

Here's something I wonder about these fan animations: do they have fairytale inspirations or is it just cool characters in combat?
It really feels like the creator might be playing favorites with Raith when he outshines another character's trailer in both design and choreography and does the most work in their first chapter as a team. Given how ridiculoisly edgy he looks compared to every other more grounded design, it really makes Raith feel like a "Coldsteel The Hedgeheg" level of self-insert OC.

I'd say raith gets the most moments as he's maybe the most experienced and/or senior member of the team while not being the leader.
Bruh, Krimson is the Yang equivalent for team RWBY… Always an afterthought.

I would like to animate my own rwby short one day, if given the opportunity. I already have some characters I have. While I have distanced myself from the Fandom, I do enjoy fan made creations such as animations, and even that Adam vs raven Manga

I could easily see this taking place in a post apocalypse Remnant where the Grimm have overrun nearly all of humanity, with few spots remaining for them to be safe, and even fewer teams. Team DARK is one of them:
Krimson is like an honorable samurai or knight of the group, in regards to the latest trailer, and I think he may be supposed to come off as stoic and controlled, but yeah, needs more stuff to do and characterization, because he's really bland.
Dawn is more of the heart of the group, keeping everyone together and trying to provide support to them all. May or may not have dealt with racists, but doesn't care, she has people to protect and a world to save.
Ash is the fiery, punky badass chick who's also dealing with the grief of losing a very close loved one in the past, she sometimes annoys her friends with her more revealing outfits, but she doesn't care. Despite her punkish and fiery demeanor, she can be quite caring and loving in a calmer scenario. May or may not be bi.
Raithe has the most traumatic backstory, as the reason he covers himself up from head to toe is because he suffered from immense physical trauma and injuries from a Grimm attack in his past, the likes of which took away the people he cared about. Ever since then, he lived for one thing, murdering Grimm, killing Grimm. Before he became part of the team, he was a lone wolf who didn't care if he lived or died, as long as he was taking Grimm down with him. It wasn't until he became part of the team that he found other people to live for again, and ever since then, he's vowed to make sure they live. Possibly the closest to Dawn, given that her telepathy may have let her see his past, which he likely allowed, possible romantic interest, although he probably wouldn't pursue it due to viewing himself as a freak and because of the Grimm. He's lightened up, but like the Goblin Slayer is with goblins, probably doesn't know what to do with his life outside of murdering Grimm, but he's getting there.
I gotta say, by the time the first actual episode of DARC drops, the combat is actually on the level of Volume One RWBY combat, or at the very least, the trailers.

I feel SLVR is, uhh, Silver, haha!
And DARK is more Gerald Robotnik instead of Doom's Eye.
SLVR is kinda just RWBY but we don't know that much about it.
DARK is dark like 30 Days, but unlike 30 Days where it's purposely being more violent, hence edgy like Shadow, DARK is more trying to survive in an unforgiving world of monsters trying to kill you.
Now I'm writing this, I just realized, DARK doesn't really have any people fighting each other. Everyone's too busy with Grimm to care about factions! The actual world is more like an AU of Remnant instead of actually taking place in it.
Like, compared to everyone else, I can _see_ the danger and possibility of anyone dying in DARK's vid. In fact, watch Raxacory's newest vid! It examples everything I just said!

Among all of the rwby fan made trailer which of them has the better character design in your opinion critter?
To be honest, my personal critique is that the team seems very unbalanced. Raith is very much anime-protag levels of powerful and yet he's put on screen and compared to the other three, who can barely hold their own without him for very long. It seems that Raith is meant to be a solo character while everyone else acts as a way to go 'look how powerful he is! these three couldn't even put a dent in that and he just chopped its head off!' which doesn't work well with the RWBY team dynamic (each of these characters are strong but together is where they shine best). really, I feel it would work better if DARK was just a duo with Raith and someone else and they played off each other better or if Raith was just powered down a hair.
The stampede... Is it just me, or did it sound like a chip bag being shaken up? XD
If this team were canon, they could work as an elite secret Black-Ops huntsman team made to handle missions that are too dangerous for standard Huntsmen and Huntresses to handle. Also I think that other girl in Ash's trailer might've been her sister.
I have to agree with Crimson being my least favorite. I don’t mean to sound rude when I say this but he feels like a copy-paste of Kirishima from My Hero Academia. Kirishima literally goes by “Crimson Riot”, has a similar red, spiky hair design, and Crimson’s semblance seems just like Kirishima’s quirk (where Kirishima hardens his skin to be very durable) as his aura envelops him to become sturdy and durable.
If we don't get more of these, I'm going to destroy this damn planet!

Animations still in the early days of one's work really emphasize how some of the most important parts of animation aren't noticeable until they're gone. Clean, snappy movement and good weighting is absolutely crucial to a really good fight, but we only tend to notice (without looking for it) when it's done wrong.
I honestly think if you doubled the speed of the first video the animation would probably look a lot better
