Your missing an important point though. E. Gadd noted in one of his conversations that Vincent Van Gore had the ability to make his paintings spring to life, and after you beat Van Gore's ghosts Luigi will say "Honh, only one of my creations is left, this cannot be!" Meaning the Van Gore you fight, is a self portrait by the actual Van Gore. Since Van Gore is a portrait ghost, and Van Gore had to be alive to paint himself I think it's safe to say that he painted the deceased family members as ghosts using the sculptures and paintings around the mansion, meaning that the portrait ghosts aren't actually the spirits of people, but the imitations created by Van Gore.

Wow That was My Theory too, It makes the most sense to Me. It doesn't seem like E gadd would just make up all The ghosts Past lives. I'm not sure if king boo Is a creation of Van Gore or not, Because Bowser is obviously not the original, so that makes two ghosts left for luigi to catch, unless king Boo created The Bowser ghost somehow but that doesn't make much sense. So what are Your Thoughts on Van Gore's Brush? do You think it has any link to Super Mario Sunshine?

    • @Celuan1999
      @Celuan1999 8 ปีที่แล้ว +58

Well in Sunshine, it's strongly hinted at that E. Gadd made the brush when Bowser Jr. says "A strange old man in a white coat gave it to me." And it's has the same insignia that Fludd has. I imagine since this takes place after or during Luigi's Mansion, that E. Gadd was fascinated by Van Gore's power and tried to recreate it, resulting in the Magic Paint Brush. Why he gave it to Bowser Jr. remains unknown. Perhaps Bowser helped "persuade" him.

Your forget the response the psychic ghosts said. That she said Mario bros defeated bowser a long time ago and she was suprise he was in the mansion. It only makes sense if you think about it that King boo actually is Bowser who was killed by Mario in their last fight. King Boo/ bowser is wearing his body as a shell. And with all the power King Boo/bowser. It makes sense how he can resize himself or do everything he did in galaxy. Tho at the end of Galaxy King boo/Bowser is revived when Rosealina Resets the universe . Bowser is Alive again and keeps some of the power he had while he was king Boo.

    Here's my theory.
First, let's get a better understanding of what a ghost is. Ghosts are usually defined as a person's spirit that is still tethered to the physical world due to some kind of unfinished business. This is hinted at in Luigi's Mansion as Neville's bio mentions how he regretted never finishing all the books in his collection, and Shivers' bio mentions how he's still looking for his master's will in hopes that his name was in it. So, for the most part, it's easy to assume that all the portrait ghosts have something they never did in life but wanted to do that's keeping them from passing on related to their lives in the mansion.
That brings me to the second point: the mansion itself. It seems odd that the ghosts were collected around the world despite having this mansion where they all seemed to have lived together. But, as we see at the end if this game, the mansion isn't real. It's some kind of spectral illusion which only recently appeared. That leads me to believe that the portrait ghosts created it when King Boo released them, as it was the source of all of their unfinished business that was keeping them tired to the living world.
So, why would E. Gadd want to turn them back into portraits when most of them are rather harmless without provocation? Is it just part of his twisted hobby? I think there's more to it.
In Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, each area has an aptly-titled mission where a whole bunch of ghosts invade the area and Luigi has to suck them all up, as the presence of such an excess of ghosts is causing the living world to become unstable with the threat of collapsing in it's entirety due to so many non-living beings suddenly existing within it. King Boo released a lot of portrait ghosts, and one of them, Vincent Van Gore, can create more ghosts. There's also all the boos. In short, there's a lot of undead roaming around such a small area. If it were to continue, it could cause existence to collapse, just like in Dark Moon.
Therefore, I think E. Gadd sees portrificationizing (his word, not mine) as a necessary evil of sorts to keep the world from collapsing. On top of that, even though most portrair ghosts don't show it, they have the capability to be truly malevolent, like Van Gore or Bogmire. Other's, like Mr Luggs and Miss Petunia, are prone to overracting to harmless pranks.
    E. Gadd likely realizes that keeping the ghosts as portraits is the best option, as it keeps the more dangerous ones in check and prevents the possibility of the world ending, even though it means trapping innocent individuals who, according to Lydia's heart scan, are all still fully conscious and aware even as portraits.
As for Chauncey apparently being born as a ghost...I dunno. Maybe it's code for him havimg been a miscarriage, and both he and the picture of him as a human were created by Neville and Lydia as a way to get back their lost child, which could be why they spoil him so much.
...Wow, that got dark real fast.

I mean all things considered it is pretty benign, like at worst being in the paintings is boring but it's apparently peaceful and relaxing so it's not that bad. And like maybe there's also a chance that if they're not in the painting they'll slowly get more unstable and dangerous over time. Maybe the reason the children are so aggressive is because they haven't learned to really deal with their emotions much and the strain of being in the living world but the adults have however it does still seem like it's stressful to them. Being the the painting probably calms them down as well so even if it's an imperfect solution it's a good one. Plus it should be mentioned that in the world of Mario paintings are pretty special, like it's not like they're actually confined to that painting, they probably have their own little world in it just like in SM64.

    • @captainkawaii666
      @captainkawaii666 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I agree with this theory for the most part, but I think that E. Gadd definitely has *some* kind of shadier motivation too, even if it's just as simple as "he wants to have a bunch of paintings with ghosts trapped in them cuz he thinks it'd be cool"

Bogmire contradicts all the evidence of his own existence. The fact E gadd doesn't make special note about him and already has a reserved spot for his painting suggest that he caught Bogmire in his travels. But that's impossible since he supposedly was created by the energy surrounding the mansion so he couldn't have existed until after the Mansion appeared. Why did E gadd have a spot for Bogmires portrait when there was no way he could have known of his existence until after?

Why I don't feel bad about catching most of the ghosts: they actually helped King Boo in capturing Mario and held the keys to keep Luigi from saving him. Most of em didn't straight up attack because they thought Luigi didn't have any way to see and capture them. A random thought from quite a few years later. Ghosts are made of some sort of psychic energy, something produced or emitted by intelligent life that hangs around and escapes in bursts when they pass away. Sometimes people leave behind an imprint of portions of their personality in this energy field creating ghosts but not ones embodying the whole person. For example Neville is bookish, Lydia is obsessed with her appearance, and Chancy is a fussy baby but they don't really have much in terms of personality beyond this one very strong trait.
Others like Madam Clairvoya who are already psychically sensitive can persist in their entirety after death and as mentioned are much more reasonable. Ghosts like the boos or Van Gore's creations are that same energy ordering itself based on lose emotions and other things bouncing around in the ever present field of psychic energy, with the boos in particular embodying a range of emotions but most only really display one. Bogmire and other spirits of that type are condense from fear, misery, or despair condensed into energy.
I would guess that the other side so to speak is a realm of psychic energy with very little matter while the normal world is a realm of matter with very little psychic energy. Interdependent and compatible with each other but separated by default aside from weak points in the barrier between them like the Boo woods or Evershade Valley.
That would make the portrait ghosts echos of people who were once alive held together by the abnormally strong energy of the Boo woods or wherever they originally came from. As we saw when disturbed they can be quite dangerous as mortals normally can't do anything against them while ghosts are free to assault others. That would make E. Gadd something akin to a mix of a pest controller and jailer for violent or dangerous spirits, keeping them alive but isolated where they can't actively harm the living. That and granting peace to the ones like Madam Clairvoya who prefer an isolated place without the constant influence of the ambient psychic field but can't move on traditionally.

Neville flings books at you, the old lady whose name I've forgotten flings objects at you, etc.) While the ghosts were probably human in origin, they've likely been caught and imprisoned for causing trouble, exactly like what the ghostbusters did.

I have a theory about this. I think that the portrait ghosts (Excluding Bogmire) were once a family living together in a mansion much like the one in Luigi's Mansion, but one day they all died for strange reasons. After they were ghosts, someone sealed them all in portraits and took them across the world. It just so happened to be that E. Gadd collecting the whole family, but King Boo freed them and built the mansion so they could be happy. So my theory states that King Boo wasn't trying to be mean, Luigi was interfering with what he had done.

In the Parlour, you can clearly see that the Artist Vincent Van Gore is the owner of the house, his picture is the one in the centre of the room. Then there is the Grandmother, Grandfather, mother, father, sister, twins, a baby. That parlor rooms and paintings throughout the house tell a lot about the ghosts in them.
in the 19th century, family and extended families lived in large houses together. The house is based in a style from that period.

    My Theory:
Vincent was a living artist who had the ability to bring his paintings to life. However, this had one flaw, they came to life as ghosts. They killed Vincent and, in garage sales, E Gadd found some of his old works. In his afterlife, Vincent kept painting, and soon foolishly created the one and only King Boo, who enslaved him into creating a mansion for a base. E Gadd soon discovered the paintings could come to life, so he invented a machine that reversed the effect, and once he did, he tried to get rid of them with garage sales.
This would explain the ghosts' existance, and the Random appearance of the mansion.
If there are any holes in this, please point them out. I haven't played LM in a while.

I liked to think of them as a family in a wealthy mansion. There’s uncles, aunts, cousins, and distant relatives. The parents are the owners, yet all of them once lived, and the home vanished to indicate its past foundation on the hill. King boo may have revived this historical place and people for his supernatural horror plan against Luigi, a mere mortal.

My thoughts are that certain ghosts when they were human, knew each other, the bust of the mother? The painter made that for her as a gift obviously, and never got to give it to her before he died, ALL of the ghosts in the mansion were unable to move on because of their deaths. E Gad I believe is capturing them BECAUSE of them being restless ghosts wandering around and such, because ghosts aren't human any longer, he probably doesn't feel much sympathy for them and decides to keep them in paintings so they don't scare people.

  • @KhakiCube

The descriptions for the ghosts could've also just been made up by E. Gadd. After all, it seems weird to think that toy soldier spirits and Bogmire were "real" people. The entire mansion and most of the ghosts were probably made Van Gore, E. Gadd even states that it only appeared a few days ago. It could also explain that there's no portrait ghosts in Dark Moon because Van Gore was caught and can't paint anymore of them.

    • @SwankyBox
      @SwankyBox  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's odd though because E. Gadd states that he has collected them over the course of his life (which is about forty years or so after he took up ghost research and left Thwomp Volcano - or at least that's just a guess as he was around twenty I believe at the time). I also assumed that since he sold King Boo in a garage sale, that he more than likely sold the portrait ghosts too. I'm releasing another video about E. Gadd in general soon, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on that one too when it is up next week!

the thing about king boo though, is he was never in a painting to begin with until the end of LM. he clearly states he holds a grudge against mario for all of the "trouble" he caused him in the past. i assume its a reference from him running ruckus through all the ghost house levels in super mario world. e-gadd only manages to capture boolossus (somehow) and thats when king boo and 34 other boos showed up and had boolossus and the other portrait ghosts freed. the mansion is created and van gore continuously paints more basic ghosts to keep e-gadd busy while king boo formulated his master plan over the next couple days before luigi showed up. ALSO, i figured out why chauncey's info says hes 1 year old yet was born as a ghost. and thats because chauncey was never alive in the first place! theres a hidden detail that says the ballroom couple is chauncey's parents. so i assume that they werent actually able to have a baby while they were alive due to fertility issues but still really wanted one. so with van gores ability to paint portraits and bring them to life, they asked him to paint them a baby and chauncey was painted as a 1 year old without him actually being born alive, thus being born as a 1 year old ghost just like the card says.

I know this video is 7 years old but whatever: My theory is that the portrait ghosts have been actual people who later then died, mostly because of their logs which even state ages and death reasons. Vincent probably only drew the normal ghosts you encounter.
And I believe that all these ghosts were caught previously by E. Gadd and King Boo just gave them a new home inside his mansion. E. Gadd talked about collecting the ghosts all across the world, and said he's "getting too old for ghost hunting" implying he was a ghost hunter when he was young.

If we go with the painter ghost theory, I like to think half of the ghosts that have bios that tell how they died in life were real people, and ones that don't were made by Vincent. And Vincent is the oldest one (minus the boos), so he's the most powerful. Powerful enough to make other ghosts, anyway.

my theory (I call this the 'family of paintings' theory) is that the painting ghosts are the dead family of Vincent van ghoul whom painted the 'before death paintings' of his family and killed himself to be with them. he became a ghost, but his family had not, so he painted the paintings of his dead family and brought them back to life. The paintings became canvasses when the ghosts left them, and E-gadd was watching when they left the portraits and wanted them for himself. He got rid of the WHOLE town the mansion was in by burning it down and waiting a few years to make everything look scary, but king boo decided it would be the best place to hide and used Mario's ghost (this is the Mario is dead theory) to make a portrait of him using E-gadds machine and hiding it in the mansion. King boo then teamed up with Vincent van ghoul to protect the castle from anyone that entered. E-gadd then tried to capture Vincent van ghoul and was stopped by the boos and lesser ghosts (all lesser ghosts were made by Vincent van ghoul). E-gadd decides to trick Luigi into doing it for him (the letter telling him he won a prize). Luigi succeeds (whole game) and saves Mario. E-gadd sells the paintings and becomes rich. Bowser becomes interested in E-gadds inventions and buys the magic paintbrush for Bowser junior (super mario sunshine) but E-gadd also creates flood to help Mario. After Mario beats Bowser junior, E-gadd becomes famous for helping him, and steals the painting ghosts back and releases them in the mansion again and helps king boo capture Mario again (so king boo wouldn't hurt him for stopping his plan). king boo then teams up with Vincent van ghoul and and possess bowser's dead body (Bowser is dead theory by Lockstin and Gnoggin) to invade the mushroom kingdom and control it. E-gadd makes Luigi go into the mansion angain and stop king boo.

Chaunsey is born dead, and every ghost were human before dying. Thier spirit stayed in the mansion because they did not finish things before going to the skies or they had regrets. By capturing them, you force them to go to heaven but they don't want it, that's why they're trying to escape, and some are trying to hurt you. But Madame Clairvoyance, as she can read the future, knew that Luigi might need her so she stayed, until she finished her mission. As she had no regrets, she wanted to go the heaven, this "peaceful place"

a lighter possibility is that an artist in life, possibly Van Gore's human form, enjoyed painting artistic interpretation portraits. At some point, the portrait collection was cursed (or the paint used to create them) causing the portraits to come to life as ghosts. Each ghost has no memory of their human counterpart, yet retains their personality. Either E. Gadd collected the paintings before or after being cursed and because the ghosts could not wander too far from the paining canvases, E. Gadd went to a secluded location where they would not bother anyone. The collection, in it's complete form, allowed the ghosts to instantaneously construct a mansion to live in. E. Gadd was fine with this, as long as the ghosts caused no trouble. Then enters king boo and his followers, including boo colossus. K. Boo then manipulates the easy to corrupt children and looks for followers in the older ones. Meanwhile, E. Gadd is busy inventing a ghost capture device in preparation for possible ghostly mischief. After K. Boo feels satisfied with his followers, he sends fake invitations to mario and luigi to come by. mario arrives first, and after discovering the place is filled with boos, he chases and contains all the grunts. when he goes to confront K. Boo, he traps mario in the painting after mario lets out a scream. E. Gadd, hearing the scream, takes he vaccum to the mansion to find a surplus of troublesome ghosts. This is when luigi arrives and the main story starts. Some spirits are fine going back and know they belong in the painting, but others refuse to accept it. The only reason E. Gadd told luigi to get all portrait ghosts is because he didn't know who was corrupted and who was not, so he didn't want to take chances. (For some reason, probably because of my love of music, i never found melody [the pianist] malevolent)

Vincent himself says king boo is the last of his creations, and boos have existed all over the Mario world long before Luigis Mansion, so it's definitely proof that Vincent's creations existed world wide. He's probably the only legitimate ghost in the entire series.
Another thing worth noting though is how similar his ability is compared to the brush bowser Jr uses in sunshine. As if Egadd learned the secret behind Vincent's power and replicated it.

I think it’s safe to assume that there was once a real identical mansion to the one in the game, The real Vincent van gore painted people as a living, he painted all over the world and encountered this family that lived in the mansion. This was in the 1800’s. He later passed away and retained his ability to paint but able to bring his old paintings to life maybe even the mansion. Sometime in the future, E.Gadd discovers the mansion and the portrait ghosts and captures them for his collection, including 15 boos of King boos posey. He exacts revenge on Egadd and releases the portrait ghosts, boolosous and captures Mario, but how he ends up under that sealed trapped door I have no idea. King boo somehow acquires a gem that allows him to also trap people in paintings. King boo himself is very mysterious. Where did he get his crown and gem? Why do both E.gadd and King boo have similar abilities. Did E.gadd discover a source of energy that allows him to make his portrait making machine work, same energy as Kboos crown gem?

You know that could be a good reason why the minor ghosts never returned in Dark Moon.
Because Vincent Van Gore wasn't making any new ghosts.

  • @StomachPlug
    @StomachPlug 6 ปีที่แล้ว

My take on it would be that Vincent Van Gore painted all of the members of some large wealthy family that lived together while he was still alive. His paintings were so amazing that people could swear that they could come to life. Upon the deaths of each family member their essences within the paintings either took on a life of their own based on the portraitee or their souls somehow migrated to the paintings. Either way, these paintings became known far and wide for supposedly being haunted and became separated when auctioned off.
    E. Gadd; being a scientist and occult enthusiast, ended up collecting the entire set of paintings as he scoured the world as a ghost hunter. He came up with the idea for the Portraitificationizer to capture the ghosts that he came across to keep alongside his art gallery of Vincent Van Gore originals.
Some time after the events of Super Mario Sunshine E. Gadd unfortunately came across hard times. Needing more funding to continue his future research projects after failing to get investors (he did send send the local monarch back in time where she was kidnapped by aliens after all, that's gotta do SOMETHING to your credibility) he decided to part with his Van Gore collection when he accidentally sold the King Boo painting alongside them, having forgotten all about it due to his absent-minded nature. That's what leads to Dark Moon happening.

I think that the book reading ghost does not challenge Luigi, I think that when you scan him you see his thoughts. He also thinks that you cannot see him, but you clearly can. He just does not know that Luigi can make him and his thoughts visible. What he probably is doing is just thinking to himself about how fortunate it is that Luigi (with his ghost capturing equipment) cannot find nor see him thus making him safe. It seems like the ghosts are unaware of E. Gadd's technology and what it can do.
You are totally right that capturing him is a crime. He is a sapient being and therefore deserves the same rights as humans. Imprisonment for no good reason is a violation to his human rights. Also, even though his thoughts (which Luigi does not have the right to read anyway, so there we have another violation) seem to challenge Luigi, they do not threaten him. And since they were meant to be private, they also do not really challenge him either. Self-defence and provocation can thus not be used as a proper defence for Luigi's behaviour. The only defence is that Luigi was coerced into down this by E. Gadd and the loss of his brother. I think that E. Gadd and King Boo are thus the major criminals, with the Boos being accomplices.
Even so, locking King Boo into a painting without fair trial is again a violation of his rights as a sapient being. Him not getting a fair trial is unacceptable (and no, a boss fight is no substitute for a fari trial), but his method of confinement also is dubious. His jail ought to provide him with the proper tools to re-enter society at some point in the future, unless he committed a crime for which lifelong imprisonment is warranted, but even then must his prison conform to the guidelines of humane imprisonment.

He wouldn't want their spirits wandering free to reveal the truth, so he captured them all. E gadd created the gameboy horror which includes the ghosts bios. He could have invented the stories. For instance, it tells us how some of the ghosts died. How could he know the cause unless they told him, or he murdered them.

I have to point out that "the other ghouls" do not simply just exist. While it has been forgotten over the years due to lack of attention to the detail, in Super Mario World for the SNES, the sunken ghost ship strongly suggests that the Boos are spirits of deceased Koopa Troopas. This is supported by the fact that the sunken ghost ship is very obviously one of the ships we seen in Super Mario Bros 3.

    Clearly, they are BOTH.
Van Gore was a traveling painter who would do pictures of any who asked him, leaving them the painting, after which he would move on. Unfortunately, all his subjects would die soon after being painted, after which their ghosts manifested near the painting.
His final portrait was a self-portrait, in an attempt to literally immortalize himself and his power. Unfortunately, after death he found that most his artistic talent was gone and all he could manage were crude blobs. Hence the lesser ghosts of the mansion we see him paint.

    I GOT A THEORY!!!
What if Egad killed every human in the INTIRE mansion because he was bored so he could bust ghosts, and he turned them into Paintings. Why else will Egad have a Ghost to Painting machine? Anyways he wanted to get rich so he sold them, and they some how got out and came back to try to haunt him, so then later Egad get’s Mario to get him in the mansion, and then he traps him in a painting because Egad has a Ghost to Painting Machine, Probably works the same for humans, traps him inside a painting calls Luigi to bust some ghosts, for a small problem (Cough cough that he created cough cough) and hopes Luigi dies in there and hopes Mario dies before Luigi can save him. And also he even makes Weapons for the, drum roll please! ‘’Buda Buda Buda’’ VILLANS!!! Will, kinda for the hero’s as well but, I think Egad wants people dead in a Evil Scientist way. To me, all the sums add up, Tell me what you think in the comments section of this comment.

Maybe the canvases are actually portals they need to "cross to the other side" and some refuse to do this because they are scared or just comfortable there.
And when they pass the portraits become just paintings, so that's why E. Gadd sold them, thinking they weren't harmful anymore, not knowing that the King actually found a way for not crossing and eventually escaping the portal.
That makes me wonder what Mario experienced when he was trapped in one of those paintings.

  • @ninetailsdafox3599

It confuses me that when Luigi checks Chauncey’s photograph in the nursery that he says it’s a photo and not a painting, although he was born a ghost. I guess that they either died being born or two ghosts had a baby. Van Gore probably didn’t paint the portraits, that would be overpowered. It says that Bogmire is a manifestation of the fear and despair in the mansion, but it just appeared. That contradicts the fact that he is quite strong.

I too am unsure as to why E. Gadd captured them. But, I do believe the idea that, at least some of them, were created by Van Gore. Of all the famous painters, why base one on Van Gogh? Perhaps, like the real world equivalent, Van Gore commited suicide from loneliness. But his spirit couldn't rest, and his desire for a family gave his brush the ability to create a family. I dont know why they ended up being captured by EGadd. But, I believe that when King Boo manufactured this mansion, he filled it with enough fake memories to give these ghosts a role to step into. By doing so, he gave them what they needed to truly become Van Gores family. In Exchange for this, Van Gore provided King Boo the army of ghosts he needed.
Kinda dark, but I can see King Boo manipulating someones desire to be loved in such a manner.

  • @jcdenton2187

I always assumed Chauncy's parents got busy as ghosts and Chauncey was born. But now looking at it, would Chauncy age after that? All the ghosts in the Mansion stay the age they died, so... only way that could make sense and Chauncey isn't a permanent newborn is if the rules are different for a ghost who is born and never died in the first place.
Man overthinking video games is fun.

Me, personally, I like to think that E. Gadd actually released the portrait ghosts in Eversahde Valley after discovering the effects of the Dark Moon. It's JUST King Boo's portrait that he sold, since obviously he didn't want to release him. Not the smartest move, but E. Gadd ain't no spring chicken.

I think the paintings would have been painted by Vincent when he was alive, then once he died somehow had the ability to bring his paintings to life ie. the paintings he did of the people, so they are spirit recreations of the actual family members & not the actual members, Chauncey could have been a creation by Vincent's own imagination hence why he was born a baby
it's a long shot but that's just a ME THEORY

I see them as nothing more then ghost of once living people being used to blockade Luigi from saving Mario from King Boo.
It's obvious by his attitude he doesn't care about any of them and only wanted to let them free to "Hinder" the player.

Hey guys,a few things I got to say. First off, I do think Vincent Van Gore created the portrait ghosts himself by order of King Boo. And two,I know what you guys mean saying you wish that there were portrait ghosts in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. I mean, the only thing we got close to something like these ghosts were the ghosts in the Scarescraper and the 3 sisters in the main story. I'm pretty sure that if we get a 3rd Luigi's Mansion hopefully the portrait ghost aspect will return, and if it does I like to have a bit more of an origin to the ghosts and more ghosts like a farmer or an explorer. Or even an FBI agent. If any of you have any ideas for what they could do for a third Luigi's Mansion like bringing back the gems from the 2nd game or what possible ghosts they could do for a second set of portrait ghosts, let me know.

found a cool theory down here in the comments that Chauncey could be stillborn (he was born but when he got out he was already dead) and the reason there's a portrait of him is because apparently in colonial times people made paintings of stillborn babies to remember them or just see what they could've been like.
