OSTOMY LEAK PREVENTION | HOW TO AVOID BAG LEAKS WITH AN ILEOSTOMY OR COLOSTOMY | FLANGE EXTENDER

  • I am 7 weeks post op and have started getting some bag leaks. This is mainly because I have started exercising and this has disturbed the stickiness of my ileostomy bag to my skin.
    A few blow outs later and enough is enough!
    In this video I share what to do to prevent ostomy leaks, stop your stoma bag from leaking and how to use a flange extender or elastic tape.
    I am using the elastic tape product from Coloplast.
    I hope this helps! Please like and subscribe for more Ostomy Care tips and videos.

    Thank you for being so open and explicit about this. I’m new at it after being diagnosed with colon cancer and surgery. I have a temporary bag while my colon heals and back to normal, hopefully 🙏. Thank you.

    Something that's worth trying and works well for us. Before peeling the backing from a new bag thoroughly warm the flange and adhesive with a hair drier. This increases the "stick" of the adhesive and, possibly more importantly, when the flange is warm it's much more flexible and follows the contours of your tummy more easily.At the same time gently blowing around your stoma ensures it's absolutely dry and, again, warmer skin means better adhesion. Costs nothing to try, may work for you, and nothing to loose if it doesn't. Thanks for a great video; stay safe and well

    All I xsn say is thank god for you 😀👍 I had colostomy in March during bowel cancer surgery. First few months were OK but I've been having real issues with leaking
    Saw this video, spoke to my stoma suppliers, they sent me some samples. I tried then and i haven't looked back 😀
    Oh, and I love your positivity. I wish I could accept this in the same vein as you seem to have

    I had the sort of opposite problem. I was leaking and having blowouts constantly when I first got my ileostomy. My ostomy/wound care nurse was amazing. We worked together and found that barrier rings, barrier extenders, extra sticky adhesive spray and an ostomy belt were what I needed. Now I have a routine that works for me, though I do still have leaks. I try and pay attention if the ostomy gets a bit smelly or becomes very itchy. And hy tape works too for when extra security is needed like at the filter spot where the pouches tend to leak.

      It can sometimes take a while to find a routine which works for you and can be a frustrating process. Glad you have found what works for you and hopefully you are having some relief from the leaking and blowouts! Thanks for sharing! x

    From my experience, once you have breached the primary 'seal', those extenders and those fabric extensions are not keeping output from your skin. You've breached the primary, output is getting to the edges underneath IT, so, time to change. My output seems to occur mostly in the early hours of the morning, anywhere from 12:00 a.m. till empty. I usually awaken by 2:30 and typically have to empty about 2 or 3 times right away. Leaks happen at these times. When they do, you hope that the 'safety flanges' have done their job and you don't have too big a mess.

    I'm so jealous! I haven't been able to keep my flange on for a day before I started taping it all back up. I'm post op 10 weeks now. What you have look like Brava strips (hydrocolloid) used for wound care. You put them over skin break down and it allows them to heal properly and it keeps the moisture from your wound (ie blood or other fluids secreted from your wound) away from the flange so it doesn't leak. If you're having trouble keeping the barrier on, try AllKare Barrier wipes after your standard barrier treatment. That stuff works until you get a wound as it burns. I started getting pyoderma ulcers (its a Crohn's disease issue) and they bleed when you move which then cause the device to fall off. To fix the pyoderma, you go back on the biologics (Stelara). Its been a fun 2.5 months :(. I want to exercise as 3.5 years of high doses of prednisone have caused me to put on nearly 80 pounds and now I can't move without being afraid everything is going to fall off and hurt :(

      So sorry to hear you are struggling with this. It can be tricky as everyone is so unique and what may work for one person may not work for another. Have you got close support from your stoma nurse?? I’m guessing that will be really important in helping you improve your situation? Sending healing xxx

    i am almost 1 year out with pee pouch and i remember the days of leaks and nurses coming in. I started doing my own kits last september and I have had only 2 leaks. my fault i rushed.. I recommend using either a slim eaken ring on the flange or a dab of paste which is like caulk...it is not adhesive and the best recommendation for active people is use a belt that attaches to the wafer and is adjustable and it gives the added pressure to hold the wafer against the tummy as tight or loose as you like.. I have put kits on with no ring, no past and it lasted 8 days... with belt.
    good luck

      I use the ring too between my skin and the flange & no more leaks during the day???Hallelujah!!! I also use the belt!! Just gives me that extra peace of mind. Now can we talk about blow outs while sleeping!!??? I’m still trying to figure how to control the mess!! Thanks for posting this!! Very hell helpful!!!

    I've been using Hollister about 4 yr now. Tried all different brands at the start but settled with Hollister one piece ileostomy drainable. Here's the problem I see with your situation. If the waist is leaking to your outer ring, the pouch has already failed, and if you catch it with the outsode strips the leaked material is now in contact with your skin under the pouch. Do you use barrier ring? If so, that's failing first. I use barrier wipes before the barrier ring then the pouch. Another trick that works great is to warm up the ring and pouch before applying. Also with a hair blower I warm up my skin. Now everything is dry and warm. Put it all on. Hit everything with another warm up, hold it snuggly with hand fire about a minute. It's stuck ! I change couple times a week but they will go longer.

      We've never made it past 1.5 days. Same problem. I see what she's saying about those microfolds in the barrier tape though. Then the blowouts. I wondered about that too. They gave us a couple of those extenders. I will try that. The smaller tapes don't seem to have that problem. But I will try it.

    I have an ostomy pouch and do use a barrier extender. My problem is that my body produces a lot of excess mucus. Sometimes it gets beween the barrier and the skin and the mucus then travels to my navel and then it leaks.

      Fixadent?....to fill in the creases/crevices in your belly that cause leaks? Genius. The expert ostomy nurse made no mention of that technique. She would cut a section of an Eakin coadhesive pad and roll it up into a small roll...kinda like a "small tootsie roll". She would carefully stretch out the belly cracking place the roll into it to fill the space. This was yesterday...so far, so good. But if we have trouble, we'll try some Fixadent to fill the crack/crevice that seems to be a source of the leakage.

My recover took a while and I tried a few different products until I found the right combination. The internet and TH-cam ideas are a good source of information and suggestions. Hang in there and good luck with your surgery. Where are you having your surgery and is it a permanent colostomy or ileostomy? I’ll keep you in my prayers.

    If you don't mind, could I put my 2 cents worth in again? Also, would it be alright if a make a brand name suggestion and their number of a particular bag? I have tried samples of just about every brand of bag, on the market, and have always went back to the bag I would recommend, after trying all the others. Also, I have tried the tape extenders with the Coloplast samples. I must be allergic to the adhesive, but the extenders gave me a rash, and when I took them off, they were stuck and very difficult to get off, and removed a small amount of my, already broke out skin. The adhesive barrier plate had also leaked, very badly, out to the edge of the extender, almost all the way around. This was all after one night and a day.

    • @gutmylifeback7926
      @gutmylifeback7926  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @wmden1
      @wmden1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Hollister 8551 one piece, drainable, bag, has the extender, border tape, as an integral part of the bag, as do most of their premium bags. I am pretty sure less expensive than buying the extenders and the bags separately, and are easier to apply to the stoma area . They also have a more secure closure, in my opinion, which sticks all the way across the neck of the bag, not just on the edges of the bag. They are a good, strong bag, and the barrier adhesive is the least irritating to my, I guess extra sensitive skin, of any I tried. That is just my experience, in my 4 years of stomahood. If it would help any who might have some of the same problems I have, I would be happy.
