From my own experience 41 years ago now, when I went from the agonising-pain of a 'mega-colon' of ulcerative-colitis at the age of 18, to a total absence of pain that has lasted this entire time, I felt almost euphoric with the removal of the extreme agony of this stage of disease! The relief and happiness because of the total-colectomy is hard to describe. It's not such a complex operation, although of course it is a major one. Tried and tested surgery techniques are used and I came out of it feeling almost reborn believe me.
Incidentally I've used a (two piece snap-on bag with bag+clip and flange) drainable 'Convatec' (used to be called 'Surgicare') system for every one of those 41 years without problems. In total over that time I must have had no more than say a dozen 'failures' (one memorable one was actually at my Aunt's funeral, while sitting in the back of a limousine with 2 cousins - I had deliberately chosen to wear a check shirt just in case, and boy was I pleased I did!), probably no more than half of which were down to failure of the clip - the rest were either simply bending and causing a mini poo-eruption or not snapping the bag onto the rim of the flange properly.... I always use the snap-on bags as I've always found the rim of the flange-part (the part that sticks onto the belly and has the stoma-hole in the center) to give an excellent '1st line of defence' against accidentally knocking of catching the stoma itself within the bag of course. This rigid rim really does protect the stoma, especially against any waist-band etc that may slip over that area.....
Anyway, good-luck. - I've been (and of course still am) there and NEVER regretted tossing that huge angry monster that was my colon into the bin to this day..

I don't normally read or respond to ostomy sites but I came across this post and was amazed at how complicated an ostomy seems for many people. Everyone is different and what works for me may be a disaster for someone else but I thought I would share my routine hoping that it simplifies someones life. I have an ileostomy and I have been using one piece clip closing bags for over 50 years. I started with the Holister karaya seal belted bags that they gave me in the hospital and that has been my go to bag ever since. About 14 years ago I started using Cymed beltless bags some of the time when I was doing something more active. My output can be anywhere from total liquid to an oatmeal consistency. I can't say that I've had zero "accidents" but my average is about one every five years and is usually because of stretching the wear time too much. I empty often because I like the bag to be empty but also because it's so easy. Total time in the bathroom is about 60 seconds and there is no mess or residual output at the opening and it only requires 4 squares of toilet paper (double for one ply). I face the toilet, remove the clip and maintain the fold with both hands as I squat down and empty the bag into the toilet (also works if seated on the toilet which was how I originally started but I prefer to stand and my naked butt hasn't touched a toilet seat in 50 years). I squeeze out as much as possible with the first two fingers of both hands stopping just short of the end to avoid getting output on my fingers. Then I use two squares of toilet paper folded over the end to remove almost all of the residual output in the end. Final step is to open the end with my left hand (just like you do with a plastic bag), wrap a square around my right hand index finger and stick it in the end to wipe enough clean for the clip. I repeat the final step with the forth square and put the clip back on. Quick and clean. Works with any consistency output. Works best with a clip bag because the velcro and other attached closure devices make it hard to open the end with one hand. Early on I had a clip open accidentally so started folding the end up and using micropore tape to attach the end to the front of the bag (except when sleeping). Never had another failure while taped and it was more comfortable because I could adjust the length of the bag depending on what I was doing.
I did a lot of experimenting in the first two years after surgery but quickly learned that I could do anything after that I could do before with the added benfit that I could eat almost anything that I wanted.
Hope this helps a least one person.

I’ve had a colostomy for a little over a year now. I COMPLETELY agree that non-drainable is the way to go. So much less mess. Another trick my ostomy care provider shared is to use olive or avocado oil spray in the bag. I find it’s WAY better than ostomy products and it’s much less expensive too.

I appreciate how honest and upfront you are Maggie. Btw. I’m with you on clips. Had a full bag burst open because the clip broke once. I love the velcro hollister one piece convex bags. And don’t sell yourself out on cleaning ability. You did better than the nurses I’ve had. Every hospital I’ve been in when the nurses would help with the ostomy care, they always did just the minimum wipe and my bags would end up so stained and shall we say not the freshest smelling. I feel keeping the bag opening as clean as possible is as important as care of skin.

Hi Kelly, I have just commented on the same thing on the main comments page. I have a velcro bag and agree the opening should be kept as clean and as sanitary as possible which is why after cleaning the opening twice with toilet paper I then use detol all-in-one disinfectant spray on more toilet paper and clean the area and if I think it needs doing again I will. I never spray directly onto the bag. 😊

You are most definitely not alone. I had my emergency ileostomy done 3 years ago to save my life and the trauma of it all really took its toll on me. I'm now in a place where I'm happy to talk openly about my experience, especially post surgery, trying to find products that work for me...etc . I must have tried every type of one piece drainable pouches out there and have only just settled on one that suits my needs. It also had a major impact on my mental health and I'm much happier now for being able to talk about it. There are plenty of online support groups, depending on where you live, and please don't ever ever think that you are alone on this journey. I know it can be hard when you're feeling so ill all the time, have no energy, have drs that dont listen, having to take meds that make you feel crappy, but we are all here to stand by your side. Hi Maggie, I am a new ostomate and still navigating this world. Your videos are lovely because they are so practical and you have been there. I believe there is an error in this video that I just solved for myself and the fix rocked my world. The Coloplast pouch has one magical move that you did not show. I read the teeny tiny, xeroxed-too-many-times directions that came with the pouch and tried to see the illustrations and still could not understand the purpose of the two dots of Velcro on the back side of the rubber spout if you are going to roll the end forward like an envelope. The answer is that you start by Velcroing that last rubber piece backward to its matching dots after you unroll and before you begin feeding out effluent. This makes the funnel part firmer for squeezing open like a milk carton and THERE IS NO flimsy SPOUT to have to clean off as you did in your video, which always gets effluent all over. So fold the first section backward on to matching dots FIRST, before you squeeze funnel open and start dispensing effluent. After squeezing everything out and closing the funnel flat there is only one wipe needed along edge where all 4 ends are stacked, or two if you are annal. (I personally am post annal.) Only then do you unstick the two dots and fold the (clean) first envelope flap forward. I was so depressed that this process would always be messy and involve lots of toilet paper. Not so. Coloplast should revisit their directions because this design is genius unless you do it wrong and have to clean a spout. I hope this helps someone. Keep doing such great work. Your husband is a lucky man. Dorothy

These videos should be shown and given to new patients. So informative for the families as well. I knew my grandmother had this but I never helped her, I felt inept and other family members were already helping her. In the 1970's, our family didn't talk about medical issues ever. So I never understood, I have learned so much and I have always been open about all my own medical issues with my children. Nothing to feel ashamed about, being open is informative and we even joke around to ease the situation.

I'll always remember him fastidiously wearing nitrile gloves and being conscious of the potential of infection. I had some accidents while he was with me and I can't even remember now exactly but we both took them in stride. It's a learning experience and it's great to have resources from folks sharing their experiences with such great delivery and with humor. She always needs help because of dexterity problems. We had a stomal therapist but she never told us about all the different products. I know this sounds ridiculous but my daughter(who has an amazing sense of humor through all this)and I would start to laugh about the trials and tribulations of bag maintenance. One time out at a restaurant she looked across the table at me and said, "you know, there is something positive with this because I dont have to get up and rush to the bathroom!" Silver lining lol. Love the demo with the oatmeal, so on point! Definitely going to look into the non drainable bags, my daughter is also very short waisted so they look like they would fit better. There are 2 Velcro dots on the back of that tab that allow you to fold it back out of the way before you let the contents out. It makes cleanup a lot easier. I’ve never had issues with leaking.

I noticed you didn’t fold the flap back on the Coloplast before emptying it. That will help emptying that bag tremendously. (side note: I found that the adhesive is different on the flat wafers and the convex, for whatever reason I react to the flat Sensura Mio wafers, but not the convex ones.)
I use 7 squares of TP when emptying. The first 3 are folded 2x & I use that to do the initial swipe in the end (with it folded back, that’s what the small velcro dots on the back of the outlet are for on a Coloplast drainable), the next two folded in half are to get the bits the initial wipe didn’t get and the last 2 folded are to get everything perfectly clean. Have never had a leak or output on/around the outlet in the year+ and two different ostomies. I find taking the bag off much messier & more difficult to manage. Also so much more waste.
I also use the Coloplast Brava lubricating deodorant to help output exit the bag easily & more cleanly.

I’ve had exactly the same problem with the Velcro ends of drainable pouches - leakage and output getting stuck in the Velcro no matter how careful I am while emptying. So once I found Coloplast’s one-piece closed end “mini” pouches, I was super happy. No more leakage, no more crinkly plastic noises, no more bulky stuff under my clothing. I’m quite petite and short waisted, so regular sized pouches ended up hitting my thigh. Not fun in the heat of summer.
I have a colostomy, so I obviously have different output type and volume and different concerns about wear and use. My output is usually paste-like and tends to pancake if I don’t use the right pouch and lubricant. I don’t have these problems with my current product.
One thing I want to point out about one-piece close end pouches is that the adhesive used is much more gentle than what’s in two-piece systems. That’s because the pouches are intended to be changed much more frequently - daily or even more often. That’s why I started using this system since my peristomal skin was getting kind of beat up with the flange.
The most important take away for me is that everyone’s ostomy and skin are different, so what works for me may not work for you, and vice versa. But I 100% agree that managing your ostomy output in a public bathroom is not the best experience no matter what system you are using. Just. Eww.

I think it's great that you as a non-ostomate are watching Maggie's videos. It really helps when we come across non-ostomates who have some awareness. Most people haven't a clue about it. Many years ago in the early years of our marriage my hubby helped an elderly man at our church who was a very private person and not coping well with a colostomy because of colon cancer. Little did he know that several years down the line, I would get an ileostomy. He was already fully aware of what it was all about so he wasn't a bit fazed, and after my initial surgery, asked if he could be present when the stoma nurse was giving me my bag changing lessons, so that he could help if I needed it when I got home. He has been so supportive throughout, often picking me up in those early days when he found me sobbing in the bathroom because of yet more leaks - it's quite a learning curve, and he's always been there for me. I think his early exprience helping that gentleman prepared him. You never know when the knowledge you have picked up from Maggie's videos may come in useful in your own life - either if you end up with an ostomy, or a family member or friend has one. Cudos to you!!

OMG!! This video was the best
My wife just received her colostomy and I've watched hours and hours of TH-cam trying to determine the best devices and processes for her.
The surgeon's office preordered a take-home starter package that, not only, seemed lacking in the comprehensive number of items we'd really need to make this work, but also stuck us with one-piece, drainable bags that I quickly determined wouldn't fit her needs.
Just as you noted in your video, she has dexterity issues, and can't work the Velcro or clips very well.
So just this morning I ordered a completely different set of devices, using the knowledge I gained from my own TH-cam investigations.
Your video completely validated my decisions, such as going to non-drainables (two piece).
I didn't even consider that non-drainables were drainable!
WOW. That should save us some money.
    Thanks again.

My reason is: I feel so much cleaner with these bags, they are easier, you just pop them off, disposal, and pop one on. So so easy and clean. I also use coloplast sen sura mio deep convex one piece. It's a pain emptying, cleaning and I find this disgusting, that's just me. So when I can I use the non drainable Hollister brand-love love love these bags.
Keep up what you do, you are a trooper and a joy to watch

I use the Coloplast Sensura Mio bags - the soft convex version, and I find them super-easy to empty and clean the opening with toilet paper. My output tends to be thick and I always use some lubricating deodorant liquid which helps. I fold up the bottom and tuck it in, and stick it to the Velcro piece. I love the fabric these bags are made of. For a while I tried some Salts ones which I saw at an open day and loved the closure, but they always leaked on me! Back to the Sensura Mio.
I have 2 different toilet papers in my bathroom - the decent soft stuff for normal use, and Kermit has his own which is super cheap and he doesn't mind me using this on his bag lol!
Here in the UK most people seem to use one-piece bags. It's what the stoma nurses seem to recommend - I wasn't given the choice. I think it's probably a cultural thing. Managing perfectly well with a normal drainable bag, it seems a bit pointless to have a 2-piece in my case. I find "less is more" and Kermit and I have got our routine down to a fine art now. I do have to change his bag much more frequently these days as I am still waiting for the 3rd repair to my parastomal hernia (long and very tedious story involving NHS woes - everything always gets blamed on the dreaded C-vid...) so I'm changing about 3-4 times a week because of frequent pancaking. We live with it and just have to get on with it!

Take care what and when you eat. I use two piece bags which ate eadier to clean if in a fix.
Very few people are aware that I have a "bag". Having ond does not turn you into a sideshow.

This was a very realistic way of showing these bags. I use the first Hollister bag with the clip and I turn the plastic inside out all the way until I see the output. It is easy to keep clean that way especially if you put the clip as far as you can down when you begin. Then I use a flushable wipe on the end and unfold the clean part and reclip. It seems better because nothing has touched the last section. I am not fond of the feel of the clip but it works.

Well done - very wise of you to prepare yourself as much as possible in advance. I joined a forum (the ostomy board on the Inspire site) as soon as I knew I was getting Kermit (my stoma). My surgery was delayed for a whole month and during that time I learnt so much from fellow-members of the forum and I was a lot less scared when the time came for me to be a fully paid up Gutless Bag Lady lol!! Yes, it's scary - so much is fear of the unknown, and I have to be honest, it's a learning curve, but believe me you will get through it and end up as a pro. Just seen the date you mentioned - you will now be in those "early days" - I do wish you well. Just remember that you are not alone and that many have trodden the same path before you and come out victorious on the other side.
My ileostomy was also for colon cancer, following my whole adult lifetime from my early 20s up to my early 60s suffering from ulcerative colitis. Getting Kermit wa liberating, once we'd developed a decent working relationship together! I have had numerous problems since with hernia problems etc. but a lot of that is probably due to muscle weakness from another condition I have, and also my age (I have just turned 70) and I also used to be quite overweight.
By the way it really helps to give your stoma a name. Treat him/her as your little friend and be grateful that he/she saved your life! There's nothing you can do to change the fact of the red blob on your belly, but everything you can do to change how you think about it!! I look on Kermit as a badge of honour, a medal won for a successful campaign!
All the very best to you as you begin your ostomy journey!

Hi Maggie, I have a velcro bag, and when I empty it, I wipe with the toilet roll twice with 4 pieces of paper, each wipe the third piece I spray Detol all-in-one disinfectant spray on to the paper and wipe/ wash the opening of the bag and if I feel it needs a second wipe I do that as well. I never spray into the opening of my bag and, only always, onto the toilet paper. It is something I have always done. If I don't, I don't feel the opening is sanitary enough for the next time I need to empty again. If when out and about, I use baby wipes and dispose of them in a sanitary bin.

I’ve NEVER had leaking from the Velcro end… I use Sensa Mio brand. But I do FREQUENTLY empty my pouch… never used the clips.. ( I tried them & didn’t feel secure.) I use a big gulp cup to stand & rinse my pouch. If I’m out( traveling, etc.) I have a collapsible cup in my car & purse. If u rinse a lot, no need for the Toilet paper. Rinse & rinse again & again. With some body wash squeezed in the end of pouch… works like a charm.. u showed the Velcro Sensura Mio that I use. The watery output can be the worst. I stand up & face the toilet & carefully rinse. When I’m at home, I use a plastic orange juice bottle filled with very warm water & body wash to rinse & rinse, until clean.. I don’t like taking the pouch completely off( messier). Much Easier to rinse from the bottom. I move the pouch around on top( if I need to dislodge some output) & keep rinsing.. when finished, I wipe off end of pouch & sprinkle some powder inside( to keep it smelling good & a bit dry & a few drops of scented oil…).. ( I rub the oil around & even up by the vent at top, to keep odor under control) not taking the pouch off constantly, makes it easier to keep from making it messier than necessary. I can look thru the window to see when I get the ostomy bag completely clean. I want to always be as clean as possible!! I hope these ideas help.. oh yeah, someone said tic tacs, altoids( best) & rinsing with mouth wash also can help dispel odors.. I’ve used all at various times… very effective( but the odor eliminator liquids u can get from the companies) don’t really help much at all… thanks for your videos & ideas!!!

    • @amymyers79
      @amymyers79 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@joeindustry I switched to non drainable for all the same reasons Maggie talks about in this video. Plus - my stoma was situated a bit lower on my abdomen, nearly the same level as my belly button. Right where my pants would usually sit. Because of that and the fact that my output on any given day could be anything from pure liquid to super formed (when I get dehydrated), I could not tuck my bag into my pants, nor could I wear high waisted pants. Too much pressure on my abdomen and stoma. Both of those things are leak-city for me. I wore straight leg relaxed fit black yoga pants every day for almost 5 years. Wearing a nondrainable pouch helped because it is not as long as drainable pouches and I had more luck being able to hide it underneath a tunic length shirt. It also just felt "cleaner" somehow.

Hi Maggie I use a two-piece Hollister 18193 bag with a Velcro closure and a clear front so I could know what's going on with my ileostomy-most of the time I tend to have a lot of liquid with the 18193 Hollister Velcro bag I can have mine full of liquid and once I learned how to roll it up very tightly and make sure that the Velcro is very secured. I have not had any leaks and that's with my bag full of liquid so I just wanted to pass this on to other people to try this because it's an extra long bag with a lot of Velcro, so it ends up, sealing up the bottom better than the shorter bags I've used in the past. I tend to like the longer bag because I can fold the Velcro into the upper band of my pants and let the rest of the bag stay outside of my pants and where I wear loose shirts it is covered up much better if I don't have the ability to empty my bag All the time - since the front of the bag is transparent, I use a cover, called a "Stoma Cloak" that allows You to keep the bag close to your body by using the the holes in the stoma cloak and put them over the ears on the side of the bag (if you use a stoma belt to help keep the bag close to your body. In addition, I add a piece of Velcro to the top of the stoma cloak and add the reverse piece of the Velcro to the flange (skin barrier) that's on your body to keep the top of the bag tight to your body. The other device that I found can be really Effective at keeping your stoma bag close to your body when you really need to (such as when you're going to the beach) ls the "Stealth Belt" it is pricy but works well as long as you do not put it on to tight (I had it pancake and blowout one side had a very bad time, so just remember that if you decide to get one (it's probably the best way to hide your stoma bag!) Please share this information - it's what I have learned from having a colostomy, and now an ileostomy over the past 10 years - , I have tried many things (I am a retired engineer, lol) please pass this information on, I hope this helps some of you folks!

Hi Maggie. First of all...I Love you!! We share very similiar stories...Im just 20 yrs older and have had my abdomen opened 6 times (think im going to tattoo it into a zipper for next time haha)...4x for original colorectal surgery, then the take down...j pouch for 20 yrs, hysterectomy...and last year because of blockages, they gave me an iliostomy and I'm healthier now than ever! Well, except for the permanent weight loss since I'm high output and short bowel. My daughter is your age and is now experiencing issues relating to Ibd, and she's afraid! She even mentioned the other day she watched one of your videos...haha! She adores you!!
Think I'm going to try the non drainable...been thinking about this for a while and I like a low profile, like my clothes to look good and I empty very very often anyway and hate it between my legs! Ugh! Thank you for doing this video! It's helped me realize what I need to do. My youngest is getting married in August..geez, all three kids married in 11 months!! Insanity!! The first 2 I found out about while I was in the ICU last March! Had to recoup REAL quick!! My iliostomy has really changed my life for the better....not sick anymore...yes, even with a j pouch I was really ill! This time around, 20 yrs ago, there wasn't any ostomy awareness....its such a blessing with all you young people showing the world what it is! Thankyou for that!! ❤️

I drink a gallon and a half a fluid alone at minimum every day plus my "solid" food. Another words my out put is around 2 gallons a day. Not even a big deal to be honest. I also change me bag every other day using isopropyl alcohol and Bounty paper towels. I taped my bag on and wear belt because I'm extraordinary active and can shower daily or even swim without having any precautions other than the tape in the belt that I wear. I can do anything and everything I used to do before maybe besides Sonos and hot tubs.

Don’t you worry about output while the bag is off? I also got an Ileostomy and have liquid output & if I have to click my bag off to replace it (due to the one I’m wearing leaking) my stoma tries to make it as hard as possible the little a.. !!!!!?????!

    Hi Maggie,
Thank you for this video. I feel very validated about the Valero leaks along the edge. It has been very frustrating having the output leak on my clothes. That said, I am curious about what you do to when you take off your drainable pouch. Do you put something over the stoma to prevent the output from leaking all over. I guess that’s my fear as I have a very active stoma.
Thanks again!!!! Appreciate your content. ❤️❤️

Hey Maggie, have you ever tried to apply your barrier ring (i use holister) directly to your trimmed bag? This way you can mold it all the to a perfect taper or to even create a thiker layer of gasket say where your abdomen may have a dip (abb bulge in my case)? I also use the Hollister barrier wipe on my skin after cleaning with isopropyl alcohol using a blow dryer to dry the barrier quickly as well as heat the bag and make it slightly more pliable and so it bonds. I'm really curious if you hurt other people take care of me this way or if you feel like any of these techniques although crude may work better

I use two of the wax(?) barrier rings because of a dip by my navel(& a little of the paste) to build up that side, so my pouch doesn’t come loose or pull to the side… I also use a hairdryer to make the rings a little more pliable & stickable. I cut the first wax ring in half & form a Y-shape for the dip side, then some paste( not much) & then a complete wax ring on top of that..to make it even & flat for my pouch & flange. I also cut my flange ring to the size of my ostomy & make sure the wax ring shows ( just a tiny bit) inside of the flange edge) & press them down firmly so I don’t get any leakage underneath. You have to be careful that none of the (?) mucus coming from ur stoma gets under the wax ring or flange when ur applying them or they won’t stick well! ( I dab my stoma before I put on the rings to keep them dry…) I hope that helps.

In theory I would love a non drainable bag but my ileostomy is so high and so liquid it just wouldn’t be realistic. I empty 10-12 times per 24 hours right now right now it is so high output I would worry about it shooting off while I took off a non drainable and emptied it

I use disposable pouch liners. If I’m out, I do like you but if I’m home or at family members I have liners with me and 1 extra bag and I alter between 2 bags. My stomach always drains so I have to pop another bag in place right away

It’s hard to tell what you’ll react to. I react to the flat Coloplast Sensura Mio wafers, but not the convex ones. The best thing I was told was to get samples of all the major manufacturer bags (in the US it’s Coloplast, Convatec & Hollister. In the UK, EU & AUS there are more options) and cut off some of the wafers and wear the small patches on your abdomen for a few days. It’s a way to test if those particular wafers are reactive for you.
Once you get the bag, you may find different issues. I get blisters from Hollister bags in a certain area where my stomach creases, but if I cut that part off, it’s ok. I can’t use hydrocolloid extenders for the same reason, so I use Trio Ostomy’s silicone ones. It’s unfortunately trial & error, but planning ahead some can help. Good luck!

I was very worried about allergic skin reactions as I am very allergic to some adhesives. I have had my colostomy “Wendy” for a year and have had no allergies to it! I can use any brand and type of product with no problem, maybe you can too!
