Profound to read the letters between St Jane de Chantal and St Francis de Sales. I recall a sister under the saint being shocked to learn the saint endured such darkness (dryness) in her spiritual life--darkness in the sense it is defined by St John of the Cross. The sister remarked that all she knew of the saint was a cheerful friendly disposition. Though consolations were removed, within detachment from all things worldly, the saint knew she must be a source of joyful inspiration for the woman under her charge.
