    If you’re on the course and you struggle specifically with thin chip shots, you need to learn how to use the bounce on the bottom of your club. Wedges are designed to give you a fail-safe method of hitting your shots. You don’t need to strike the ball perfectly to hit a good shot. The key here is you need to have the bottom part of your club interacting with the ground, NOT the leading edge.

    Interesting idea, you seem to teaching players to scoop under their chip shots, by breaking and hinging the wrists. Not seen that approach before.

      For mid to higher shots to use the bounce this is good
      Less so for low shots

    Hi. Should your left wrist be cupped or bowed? Or flat? And is answer the same for pitching?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tim!
      It depends very much on your grip:
      th-cam.com/video/S776LyvM6Pc/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/lxyLhDS_UrM/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/vGqZJjnDA0Q/w-d-xo.html
      You want the face less tilted down with pitching (more toe up)....again you will need to see what wrist angle you need relative to your grip
      th-cam.com/video/fqxIpUSaU2M/w-d-xo.html
      the simple version
      Weaker grip--more bow
      neutral grip--more flat
      Stronger grip--some cup

    Great video!
    I was very active like 10 years ago and back then almost everybody chipped with the ball back in the stance. I did exactly what you are promoting Eric and I have always been a great chipper. Your advice makes so much sense to me! I'm not sure if you adressed the wedge-shots but I applied the same technique and thinking using the bounce on all my shots within 110 yards and the results were amazing!
    Keep it up.

      Thanks! Me too. I used to go ball back, low spinner style chips and it was remarkably in consistent. A little better when I was practicing everyday but still far less predictable. When I learned about using the bounce it complete revolutionized my chipping!

    Hi Eric, I absolutely think your videos are the best. I’, struggling with my chips and pitching. I have been for about 6 months+. Can you describe the hand position on the take away. Thumbs up. I get the hinge discussion. Also, check your website. Some funky Asian web page pops up.

      Thanks for letting us know...will check it out!!
      I would start with a weaker grip.....with both hands.
      Thumbs pointing more straight back to have the Facebook neutral or slightly open...
      Dont need a ton of hinge for stock shot....more for higher shots

    @alanplummer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Eric, very nice video and straight forward as always. Thank you. Question, are you using the same grip as normal shots. Also, what about grip tightness? Thanks so much for the excellent videos and instruction you produce.

      Thanks, Alan!
      Good question!
      I like a weaker grip for chipping/pitching. Makes it easier to have face open and use bounce.
      Grip pressure neutral...more toward soft than firm for most

    Eric since I started playing again (last two months) I found myself with the chipping yips. I have never had those back in my playing days. I have worked almost every evening with every conceavable swing technique / swing thought and still find myself with the yips. In my playing days they called me the SandMan because of my sandwedge play...............I was able to use bounce or leading on command back then and work it like magic. It is only with the chip shot, not pitch shots. I find myself blading them across the green / or fatting them. As an example, last week I shot a 77 with 3 chilly dips and one bladed chip. It was very embarrasing during the beggining now I almost find it commical. Strange indeed.

    Hi Eric quick question I am being taught in the way you are showing ie using the bounce. However, there is one difference which is in the set up my feet are wider 12 - 18 inches apart with the left foot flared out and weight on the right foot, the ball is opposite left foot heal everything else is the same. Can you let me know what you think?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds fine...I like to have the ball position just inside right heel. weight 50/50 to 60/40 left is fine. Would have to see your move to give specifics but sounds like youre on the right track

    I know I'll be crucified for this but wotthehell... I practice this shot on our very tight chipping green (when no one is looking). I've been able to play the shot from hard pan and I love it from tight lies around the green for the consistent amount of spin I can generate. I would suggest that you could get more consistent contact by not hinging the wrists ... I'm rather old (ancient, actually) and my small muscles are just too twitchy so I try to eliminate them ... the feeling I have is simply rotating around my spine - no wrists, no hands, no shoulders. Love your videos and thanks.

    Short chip shots, little less hinge or maybe no hinge and keep a little cup to keep it neutral and expose the bounce? Seems like something to mess with and answer my own question

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha yes experiment...in general....
      Short chip shot if you're going low= less hinge short swing
      Short chip shot if you're going higher=longer swing, more hinge, face more open

  • @Dreama40
    @Dreama40 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Eric, i've been going back n forth between this method and the hinge and hold, with good results with both methods, but i have the occasional miss with both methods. With the hinge and hold i find i often get to steep and dig to much and will get the odd shot heavy, with the method you teach i find my occasional miss is a thinned shot. I have no way of uploading my swing etc but would appreciate your take on what may be going on if that's possible? I'm really wanting to find a method that stands up under pressure and one where i don't have those fat or thinned shots, which is why i'm floating between the two methods. Perhaps others have the same issues? I guess you've probably answered it in this video but maybe i'm missing something?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CogornoGolf Hi Eric, sorry for the late reply! I've been practicing your method for the higher chips, ie more bounce and it was these shots i was thinning under pressure! Seems i was not "THUDDING" enough! I've focused on being more aggressive with my club/bounce interaction with the ground and to me this seems to be the key to more consistent contact especially on those tighter lie shots when you have to get under the ball! As you said to Nolan don't skim, thud! Thanks again i think the penny has dropped...

      I used to be a decent chipper when I lived and played in a different town and was a member at a particular club. After moving to a wetter climate and joining more of a muddy based club (when it does rain) that has grass where the ball always sits down in the rough, I have become a mental midget when it comes to chipping. Fat them and thin them all friggin day because confidence is out the window. You become afraid of fatting them so of course the consequence of that is everybody's favorite shot ... the thin! There is a big difference playing soft tracks compared to firmer sand based tracks with great stand up tighter grass.

    Mr.Cogorno, I have trouble with my grip. If I put the grip under my left heel pad as shown by many teachers I tend push shots right. If I grip left hand neutral my shots improve. Your thoughts.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I want the heel pad on top....always. Hard to say without seeing your swing. If your heel pad is on the side of the grip (weak) and you put it on top (stronger) that in and of itself shouldnt make the ball go right.

    Love it, love it, love it!!!! Great explanation. Basically your saying RELEASE the club more in the downswing so that it exposes the bounce at impact more then the leading edge, so the club is more neutral at impact basically, cant wait to try it. Thanks so much Eric, cant get enough of your chipping pitching lessons!
