    To me, the chipping and pitching or finesse wedge zone is all shots inside of 30 yards. The wedge zone is from 30 yards up until you hit your full pitching wedge.
    I prefer you to hit these shots from 30 up until your full sand wedge with one club. I use my 56 degree sand wedge and I'll use that one club on every shot from 30 up until 110 yards. To keep things simple, I also like to try and swing at one speed. I like to have one speed or one tempo, so the only thing I'm changing is swing length.
    I start using a “spot” once I get to 40 yards. For me, from 40 yards my hands go pocket-to-pocket, 50 yards is hip-to-hip, 60 yards is just above hip to j ust above hip, 70 is rib-rib, 80 is chest-chest, 90 shoulder-shoulder, 100 for me feels like ear-ear, and then 110 is a full swing. When I say those spots, it doesn't matter if they actually go specifically wherever I'm saying. The point is if I have 50 yards, I can think hip-to- hip, and the ball goes 50.
    Let’s talk about the setup pieces with the wedges. Your feet will be closer together than full swing - to the point where your heels are almost touching. From down the line , I get closer to the ball and I grip down compared to normal. I also prefer to have the club face slightly open so I can utilize the bounce a little bit more than normal. As I get longer, as the distance gets farther, I will gradually widen my feet. I will get slightly farther and the shaft will gradually lower. I'm not measuring that outwards, I want it to be mostly a feel thing.
    I would say you have a normal amount of hindging when you go back. I wouldn't go fully unhinged. I wouldn't be trying to add a ton of hinge. I would have a gradual from zero to however much you want as you go. There's not a perfect ratio for the hinge amounts.
    With this wedge system, we're going from a 30 up until your full pitching wedge. So sand wedge only goes 110 for me and my pitching wedge goes to 140. I have pitching wedge swing lengths that go 120, 130 and 140.
    The other piece we have to keep in mind with wedges is trajectory control. Now, for most people watching this, having one baseline shot, one trajectory, one club is good enough from a scoring perspective. Unless you're shooting seventies or better, than one swing is the best philosophy.

    This is solid gold. 30 to 100 yards has been a dead zone to me for a long time. I have never felt so good about a practice session with my SW as I did after this. Will definitely be working this drill into my regular practice rotation

      @@CogornoGolf I just started playing in May and you have helped me big time, I just played this morning and shot a 98 at a course that I never break 100 and I used my Pitching Wedge for 30 to a 100 yards and just used the method u use and it really helped. I normally would have changed clubs in between those yardages but today I didn't and shot my lowest score!! U da man!!!

    Eric, I started rebuilding my swing two years ago with a hand full of lessons and using your position drills with chip stick, hanger etc. my average score then was around 105 last year after working on your drills was around 96 I continued to do your drills in a net all off season. I just had the best score yesterday with an 84 and with out losing a ball and out driving my playing partners by 50-80 yards. I finally understand the positions of my swing. Thank you so much. Time to dial in my short game I had a hand full of long puts due to bad pitch shots.

    Coming back into the game after 15 years off - I stopped playing right after I started breaking 80 regularly (long story). I was self taught so I figured I'd search TH-cam (which didn't exist back then) for quick instructions and refreshers. After finding vids from several online instructors, I came across your channel. As a teacher/trainer myself (unrelated field), I can appreciate clarity of message and organization in the instruction. I must say you are excellent, the best I've found so far. I've already looked at and implemented several of your instructions and tips and it has made it so much easier to find my game again. This wedge system is different than what I used back in the day (it was based on a clock system from a real life paper book that I actually had to read, in the real world, like physically in the hands!). The body position w/ constant tempo is far superior - it is just simpler and easier to repeat. Can't thank you enough for your instructions. Keep it up.

    This is the best short game help video I've watched. I was able to put it into practice after one trip to the range. From now on, I'm spending much more of my range time just dialing in my wedge distances with one club (56 degree wedge). This has saved me more strokes than any other tip video. Thanks, so much!

    This is gold. My system is incomplete - wherein I have half swings and full swings for all 4 of my wedges (60, 56, 52, 48). I know the carries for both half and full swings - but somewhere in between is where I tend to get lost in the dark and just play it by feel. This system - one club - but with designated end points seems to make so much sense that I'm actually disgusted with myself for not thinking about it sooner. Thanks for the tip Eric - will surely try this at the range tom. Keep up the good work!

    Best golf instruction content on TH-cam, as always. Getting exact numbers without Trackman is obviously tough, plus range balls aren't exactly pure. Should we take any sort of +/- yardage into account when using range balls?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. Depends on the ball. We have range balls that are not limited flight so they go the same, but obviously over time some wear and tear. Limited flight balls typically 70-80% of normal distance based on balls we have had. How much comes off bc balls are beat up? Probably some, but I have used them for my wedge practice going up and didnt seem to mess me up.

    As a high-handicap, this system intrigues me. The Peltz system has too-many moving parts for me. Would you consider these "pitches"? I find it confusing when writers and instructors use the same term for both less-than-full swing wedge-shots AND pitch shots less-than 20--30 yards out. In my mind;
    CHIP less than 5-yds with a putting stroke.
    PITCH 20--5 yrds with an abbreviated swing and bump-n-run shots.
    APPROACH (Wedge?) 70-20 yds as you're describing here.
    SW 80-yds short-iron swing.
    PW 90-yds shirt-iron swing..

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      tedbnnj that’s cool..it’s really semantics..all terms we made up. To me everything inside of 30 is a chip shot, 30-100 wedge zone. We can use whatever words we want

    Thanks Eric. I've been working on the Dave Pelz system, but I'm finding it too complicated to use on the course. By the time I've calculated the wedge and the hour on the clock to take my backswing to, I've lost all the feel for the shot itself. I'm going to try your system and save my other 'non-standard' wedges for special situations. I think you're right - for someone shooting 80 to 90, one wedge is going to be a lot more comfortable and effective.

    Awesome video Eric, one of your best!
    Your explanation of the release pattern on low and high shots were really nice. Haven't had the chance to really practice wedges this year so looking forward to do so.
    I learned to love the wedges after reading Dave Pelz's short game bible years ago. I used the 7.30, 9.00 and 10.30 o'clock system with four wedges and I think it's very similiar to yours (I mainly only used one or two wedges when playing). I really prefer your system to for example Tiger's who uses trajectory to determine how far the ball goes.
    I would really stress to the audience the importance of having a shag-bag and your own balls and practice off short grass. That will maximize your results and feedback.
    I used this drill that I still use to find the correct use of bounce on the wedges. I start of the fringe on the practice green where you are allowed to hit chip-shots and then I set up for a pitch and make really really slow but full swings (carry might be max 20-25 yards with lob-wedge) and try to take the ball as clean as possible using the bounce. My thought here is to only take the ball using the bounce and to hit it low on the clubface rather than high up. When you successfully hit these shots it almost feels like your club becomes a lacross-club and you trap the ball on the clubface during the swing. The result is a flight that looks like slo-motion and is lower than normal with decent amount of spin. When you master these short ones you're ready to hit longer shots trying for the same sensation (but with normal swing speed this time). This is why hitting of grass is of crucial important since you can hit pretty poor shots on the range that turns out decent.
    One final secret tip I got is to buy a piece of plywood and make a tiny hole so the ball stays on the board. Try to hit wedge-shots from it. You will learn how to use your bounce and how the feel should be. This will also lower the flight. I don't advocate really low trajectories as standard but in my opinion, for maximal control on the wedges your flight should be lower than a normal shot without trying to manipulate for the best control.
    Sorry for the long note but wedges is definately one of my passions!
    Keep it up!
    Viking,
    Sweden

    I am eager to work on this system, which makes perfect sense to me. Q: When I make a full swing (R handed) my left shoulder takes the club back, when the back swing is complete, I fire my right hip to the ball. Hence, I am NEVER thinking hand position and my legs are doing all the work. Of course when I putt and chip (30 yards in), my hands are doing the work. With this system (hand positions), are you using your chest or shoulders to move your hands or are you strictly focused on moving your hands?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jeff
      You are still using your body to generate the motion.......but you are aware of how far back your hands go at each distance....
      You can still have your body lead but be aware of where hands are....without the hands leading. Just aware

      Lob wedge....rarely ever.
      Gap wedge when I need a lower trajectory for a back pin or full swing 120 yards.
      My Gap wedge I hit 120 yards....so I'll also use it from 110-125 as needed.
      I do not use gap wedge for this distance 30-100 unless it calls for a much lower trajectory that I dont want to do with back pin....its rare. Like a back pin into the wind for example

    New to your channel and have been learning many things to improve my game from your awesome videos. For wedges, do you still try shallow the club or maintain single plane? Does this depend on swing size? Thanks for your dedication to improving the game!!

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for being here, Brian!
      Less shallow with wedges....more single plane.
      The shorter the swing the more single plane, the longer the swing the more shallow.....keeping in mind the shallow is VERY SMALL change under backswing change.

    Lovin the videos. I got a few questions...
    1. With the setup position, the flaring of the toes totally helped me, but I was wondering if you are also slightly open in your stance and your shoulder?
    2. With wedges, you said that it's better to be outside your hands, and this has done wonders for me, but on a ear to ear or almost full wedge shot, is it still outside your hands? Is this only for GW, SW, and LW?
    3. PW. With the PW with less bounce, is it still outside the hands or do we go back to a normal iron swing? Do we release it normally or do we swing left with the body turn?
    I really like learning the mechanics of the shots so I hope you can clarify.
    Your videos are awesome!!

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!
      1. Most players slightly open with everything, yes...not just feet.
      2. As the swing gets longer, its less important to be outside as you have more time to make up for it and you are also gradually aimed less left.
      3. PW normal swing

    Hi. I really like this video and can relate to using the same wedge for multiple length shots. It does make me wonder, though, what you recommend for a 10-15 handicap golfer as far as which clubs he should carry. For example, if I can use my 54 degree wedge 80-90 yards, then do I need a gap wedge or should I go straight to from there to pitching. I know a 58 or 60 is a specialty club that maybe should stay. But carrying this throughout my bag, I have issues as well with the top end of my clubs. I am 69 years old and hit my driver only 215-225 anymore as my swing speed and ability to turn have slowed down. I also hit my longest iron which is my 5 iron only about 165-175 any more. Do you have any suggestions on filling that gap? Do I really need to carry 14 clubs anymore? Also, in some lessons and fittings I have done, they keep pushing me to lighter regular or senior shafts. I understand that, but then I lose feel of the club head when the shafts seem almost whippy so to speak. Is there any argument for someone like me still using a stiffer shaft as I always have? Anyway, I know I am asking you for a lot here, so please forgive me but it is hard to get advice from someone you have confidence in. Thanks for whatever you say back.

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Charles!
      The short answer is the answer to all of your questions is going to get a club fitting with a good fitter to see 1. Should you fill the gap? and 2. With what?
      I would just be guessing but they can test all of things and give you what you need.
      All the best

    Would you recommend opening the stance at all or would you say it’s better to stay square and adjust the width of the stance?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good questions.
      1. Stance should be open with wedges primarily through the lead foot being flared.
      2. Stance width should start very narrow (heels almost touching) like chipping. Stance should gradually get wider as the distances get longer.

    • @desean3402
      @desean3402 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eric Cogorno Golf so stance is open slightly and as I start to widen my stance I also keep opening my feet/hips/shoulders. Or is just the left foot flare enough? And last question how are you able to shallow the club with your short wedge swings because it always feels to me that I don’t have enough time?

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. Stance is slightly open for all wedge shots. Gradually less open as you work into full shots. Foot flare is enough generally but experiment and see what works best for you. I have lots of players who are varying degrees open with wedges.
      2. Shallow club same way with full swing....but less relevant with wedges IMO

    Hi Eric,
    Thanks for introducing this method to us rather than the clock hands. But for different lengths, do you just alter your swing length or is it the speed too? if we have a loose grip, it is almost impossible to generate speed through faster hand movement? In that case is it the case that all speed is generated by a faster hip rotation? Thanks

    • @CogornoGolf

      @CogornoGolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Dennis!
      Well the answer is YES....of course you need to square the face...
      But I think that you are talking about is do you need to FEEL like you do?
      And that simply will not be a YES or NO answer for everyone.
      If your face is to open.....then YES you need to actively do it. If its already square then NO. IF its too closed then you need to actively STOP it from closing.

      50-60 yards with wet turf is one of the hardest shots in golf.
      no magic...
      You have to hit it perfect. I would play ball back and make sure you get ball first contact. Probably lower than normal trajectory.
