Happy Easter, everybody! Hopefully this video marks the comeback of regular uploads on this channel. Things appear to be returning to some semblance of normalcy for me, so a goal of mine is to return to having weekly content on this channel, be it a Flashback episode, a live stream, something different like this episode, etc. I'm also still working on the next "big" episode for the main channel, but it's taking forever because it was just a big undertaking. Anyway, enjoy!

Great video, Chris! I’m glad you mentioned the popularity of sports games on the Genesis. There was approximately 190 different sports titles(depending on whether you count racing, pool, bowling etc. as a sport)...
It was fun to “hang out“ with you upstairs and listen to your perspective on the genesis library :)

Monster World IV is in my next 10, possibly next 5. One of the most polished Mega Drive adventure games I've seen. I like the way this video was divided between the top 25 getting broken down 1 by 1 in detail before going into your personal favorites.

MUSHA is actually also an acronym in Japan, the "Metallic Un Super-Hybrid Armour" is taken right from page 4 of the Japanese manual. For whatever reason they just decided to put that on the cover in the US (PAL never got an official release, the poor bastards).

I guess what was popular in the UK is not necessarily the same as in the US, but a big one for me growing up was micro machines turbo tournament (and TT 96), which had the extra controller ports built into the cartridge - we were always bringing our controllers round to each others houses to play 4 player! I'd also have dynamite Headdy as one of my favourite platformers for the system.

It’s not my usual type of game, but it really drew me in because of its similarity to Star Trek. The interaction with aliens was my favorite part. The manual gave hints about which species to be nice to, and which ones to talk tough with. Fascinating game, and very replay-able.

48:43 It was titled as Buck Rogers, because it takes place in the Buck Rogers XXVC universe, which was created by TSR in the 80s. Was actually a big fan of the SSI games back in the day myself, including Countdown to Doomsday, and Matrix Cubed.

I think you're spot-on about Road Rash. Desert Strike / Jungle Strike could be another. The games have texture, like that is what the Sega Genesis could paint on a canvas. Of course, there are games that do a way better job--plenty--however, an outsider looking in would see those EA and Atari ports and think, yeah, the late 80s arcade is in the home with Sega Genesis, and they all have grit.

Tactical RPG is something similar to Military Madness where each character/piece has a certain amount of steps, and then they can choose to attack any enemy close by and in the range of their particular attacks. For instance, characters that wield swords have a short range attack, often only able to hit enemies in front, back, or to the left or right of them. Archers have a longer range, but often can only hit enemies front, back, and sides just an extra block past the range of the sword fighter. Magic users have the longest range, even some can hit diagonal enemies, or a cluster depending on the magic and how a particular game's magic system is setup. Tactical RPGs can be American and Japanese. Probably the most notable American Tactical RPG series is Heroes of Might and Magic. It has a side view instead of top-down, but similar tactical principles apply.

I rented Desert Strike about 4-5 times for the Genesis growing up. My grandparents would always take me to the video store too late in the evening and all the new and "popular" games were gone, but Desert Strike was always there sitting on the shelf. It was never my favorite but I wasn't about to turn down renting a game for the weekend. My mom never let me rent games because rented games would give my Genesis a virus. Thinking back, I'm sure this was just her way to get me to stop asking.

I feel like sports, fighting and especially racing games are the biggest beneficiaries of improved hardware. Higher framerates, smoother animations, 3D graphics and greater visual fidelity remarkably improve the playing experience for those genres, so much so that the games on older hardware just feel archaic.

I can see what you mean about Road Rash. I think it's a combination of the visuals, the sound (which I assume was GEMS, or at least it sounds like it to me), and the ATTITUDE. Obviously there are games that do any of those three things better (or more memorably, at least), but Road Rash is a good example of all three qualities. Plus it just feels very representative of the "average" Genesis experience; the more iconic games like Sonic or SoR can sometimes feel like outliers just by virtue of being so much better than most of the other games on the system.
It's not a good game but, for me, Eternal Champions kind of does the same thing. It's just so incredibly "Genesis" somehow.

    • @duckfield2520
      @duckfield2520 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Road Rash was definitely not GEMS. All early EA games sounded raw like this.

I know you probably won't care about this but Disney does put out like 8-10 minute cartoons of micky mouse nowadays. The wonderful world of micky mouse is what its called. The first season premiered in November of last year and that series is a sequel to another set of shorts that ran from 2013 to 2018. And all of that is easily accessible through Disneys streaming services, as well as the free one aimed at kids.
Disney is still doing stuff that I'd imagine plenty of kids know who micky mouse is lol.

I wish you would have also called out on Castlevania Bloodlines that he character can choose to go to different than what the other area can. Belmont can attach his whip to the ceiling and keep swinging across which can take you to knew areas and the same goes for Eric. He has a power jumó that you can use when you crouch and it allows to you go to levels you cannot with Beltmont.

I feel the same about Ecco the Dolphin - I'm both surprised and not surprised when it does or doesn't show up on best Genesis games lists. It definitely is a flagship Genesis game, and it deserves to be remembered as iconic to the system as Sonic, Shinobi and Street of Rage. It is a great game. It's completely unique and well designed, and Ecco plays and feels how a dolphin should... but... it's super difficult. Not to mention it feels incredibly bleak, and as great as the soundtrack is, it reflects this tone. Add to that maybe some kinda subconscious anxiety about constantly having to worry about drowning; Ecco's screams when he takes damage; the themes of being lost and that feeling of loneliness. Then there's the unexpected sci-fi plot. Objectively it should be a top 25 - easily top 50, at least. But, subjectively, I can see why it doesn't end up in a lot of people's favourite experiences.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the high point of the Sonic series in my opinion. Sonic 2 has some of the best levels, but it also has some of the worst (mainly in the second half of the game). Sonic 3 is just balanced so well in terms of platforming, high speed, and exploration.

Sports games are like flight simulators: Their focus on modeling a real world activity as accurately as possible means they get rendered obsolete all too easily by advancing technology. This is why the 8 and 16-bit sports games still worth playing and talking about today are the deliberately unrealistic ones. Mutant League, NBA Jam, Punch-Out!!, Tecmo Bowl, etc.

Yeah I don't understand why Twin Hawk and Twin Cobra weren't included in the Toaplan Collection.

Well if you think about it.. I’m the 90s it took longer for movies to come out on VHS or DVD later. Now a days a movie will be on a streaming service at the same time it’s in theaters…. Wasn’t as instant back then. So the tie in had more of a chance.

I love SoR3 it’s one of my favourite game for the Sega mega drive / Genesis. I think the reason why they added the energy bar for the weapons is because you can do a special move with the weapons by tapping forward forward plus attack button

The reason why they could release a video based on a movie a year later was because of how long they took to come out on video back then.

Sonic 2 actually came out on Tuesday, November 24th, 1992 in the United States, since it was known as “Sonic Tuesday”

@@CGQPlus I was working at an Electronic's Boutique at the time, and oddly enough the release got botched because stores started selling the game on Monday. So we got a call from HQ to nix the street date and to start selling the games immediately.

01:07:50 I don't mind either I use the d-pad or analogue stick, whatever works for me works for me, I'm more of a hybrid type of person. Some games I use d-pad, while others I do it through analogue sticks.

Really cool concept. I'd find it hard to leave Master of Monsters and Quackshot out of a top ~20-30.

I never bought desert strike because I thought they were boring when I was younger but now that I'm more wiser and watched your review just now!! I think I missed out!!! I have a genesis and I saw one or two at noble games a few miles from my home, and I'm definitely going to pick it up!!! It's so different than I thought it was! It seems like a good game to relax and play!!! Blow up air fields pick up hostiges and find fuel and armor!! It's so Cool!!! You can even shoot little tiny soldiers walking around!!!!!! Wow thanks!!!!!!!!! 👍 Oh and it's only like $3.00!!!!!!!

The only drawbacks of shooters on Genesis, most of them only offered single player option. So, my friends and I played more sports games and side scrolling beat 'em up.The only time I played MUSHA and Super Monaco GP because they were in the same 4 in 1 package, that sounds like a good bargain nowadays if you can find one at decent price.

Great list I would only have one numbered entry per game though just because there’s a lot of great games some underrated jewels too. My top ten would look like this
    10 toe jam and earl
    9 shining force
    8 vector man
    7 comix zone
    6 golden axe
    5 midnight resistance
4 street fighter 2 special champion edition
    3 Gunstar heroes
    2 Sonic the hedgehog
    1 streets of rage 2

With regard to those that aren't on the list ie. Sports and Fighting games... my educated guess is that people probably don't think about them much because they weren't exclusives and ported elsewhere. I know when I typically think of best Genesis games, the exclusives come to mind first.

Great work Ian with compiling the Genesis list! Sounds legit, as odd as some things are.
I too was surprised by the complete omission of fighting games. Even if modern gamers may prefer Street Fighter II on other systems I thought for sure there was nostalgia for Mortal Kombat II.
Nice list of next ten, Star Flight is one I’ve never played. Sounds really interesting, will keep my eye out. My own contribution for a next ten would be Wiz ‘n Liz. It’s kind of a platform game where there are no enemies or hazards on the levels, you just try collecting as much stuff as you can and avoid letting the clock run out. A frantic game that plays like nothing else I’ve experienced.
