This time on Flashback, we take a break from talking about computer games to get back to something that most people actually care about. In the spring of 1992, both Stuart and I got Genesis systems, and I learned a valuable lesson about economic inequality and how much better it feels when you earn something rather than having it handed to you. But the most important take-home message is that it takes a real monster to write a check out to a 13-year-old..

I was going to release this one tomorrow, but today is a holiday, so if you're sitting around with nothing to do until it's time to fire up the grill and/or enjoy some fireworks, here you go!

I'm a tad older than you by about ten years, buy I have great memories like you of the early 80s and 90s. PC gaming was all about simulation and console gaming was pure and simple. Miss those days. Miss an all cash economy as well. People are going to miss cash and it's anonymity.

The consoles also managed to perfect smooth scrolling a lot earlier than PC. Commander Keen and Cosmo were nothing like the Mario and Sonic games I pined after as a kid with "only" a PC.

Awesome video Chris! Without a doubt, my favorite video series on TH-cam. I remember the first time I saw the Sega Genesis. I was over at my cousin's house. We walked to his neighbor's house. His neighbor was playing Sonic the Hedgehog. I was blown away. The colors, music and the speed of the gameplay. I had to get one.

Awesome episode, as usual Chris! Your flashback videos always fascinate me. Thanks so much! Random thoughts: Your grandma sounds so cool. Texaco... Bon bons... PC speaker BLEEPS... Bunn O' Matic (the headquarters is less than 10 miles from my house)... So many memories brought back! BTW, the new mic sounds crystal clear.

I got the Mega Drive around Christmas of 1994, and it came with Mega Games 2. To this day I still consider that to be one of the best introductions I have ever had to a games console.

Nicely done at the end there. As far as I'm concerned, the plural of "Genesis" is "Genesis systems" as you said. The sales numbers reflect it, but Sonic was a brilliant pack-in game. A friend of mine got a Genesis for whatever reason and, after I had a chance to see Sonic at his place, I knew I had to get the system as well. I was on the fence prior to that. It was a very impressive game, and a lot of fun. My mom was really cool when it came to video games. Not only was she willing to get me video games from when I was quite young, she's the one who suggested we get some speakers to hook up to the headphone jack of the system. It sounded great that way. Good times. Thanks for sharing as always. I enjoyed listening.

"genesis systems" is valid, but we would also accept "Geneses" pronounced gen-ə-sees

In Golden Axe (in the camp fire segments) I always jump in the air and slash my Axe as when it freezes I try to capture the animation where it looks like there is about five Axes. Something me and my mate Simon always used to do and now I still do

Here’s something I realised about Golden Axe YEARS afterwards.
I think it’s optimal to play as the Dwarf and the Woman when playing 2 player (Dwarf best fighter, Woman best magic)
Then the Barbarian is best for playing solo (as he is an all rounder with medium magic and fighting skills)

I have this distant memories of me visiting my cousins far from home (around 8 hours by car) and going to his room to play Sonic the Hedgehog. It's amused me so much, first of all because he had his own TV in his bedroom, only high class (or upper middle class) family would be able to afford that in my country in mid 90s, and of course the Genesis (or probably Mega Drive looking where I came from a.k.a south east Asia) ,that's the first time Im seeing 16 bit system (I cannot remember did I already have NES clone or not at home) and felt flabbergasted. And then his older brother took me into his other bed room and he have a freaking PC there, then He play Monkey Island that made me more amused because it's looks like cartoon on TV. I still cannot forget the memories of it.

28:00 While I think the Sega Genesis has an interesting design, I think Sega's Dreamcast has the killer looks in the family. It's a compact four-player arcade machine which has clean style with noticeable flair upon study. Turn the DC to the side and notice the rolling wave which crests at the back of the console. Look at the symmetric studs around the CD door. The orange led triangle which complements the grey one on top of the door. It's a beautiful system.

HAHA the burning the Golden Axe's characters genitals/ass over that fire (plus trying to get the fire as accurately as possible under their genitals/ass) was the funniest thing I've seen on your channel!
My friends and I did the same sort of thing (on a bunch of games), but half the time it was just as much what was cool instead of what was funny (like we all used to always try touch to the level ending orb in Castlevania 4 while doing the 'so cool looking' airborne downward diagonal whiplash).

Going round to peoples houses and asking if they had any jobs a kid could do didn't really happen from what I can recall from my own childhood. But mainly because the person would just do it there self I think. Like certainly I remember knocking on doors as a boy and asking but I think the general answer was just "No."
I remember this one guy though who was blind. I don't know the severity of his blindness but because everyone knew his situation children would just exploit him and make up that his front garden needing tending to or agreeing to do work for him but then not doing it and collecting payment anyway. I want to be CLEAR here and say I had no part of this but kids for sure were playing the man for a fool regardless.
I remember striking GOLD one summer and this young couple had just move into a downstairs flat (apartment) and the dude called me over from the park and asked me how old I was so I told him. Anyway he went inside and had a very brief conversation with his girlfriend and there and then they offered me a job doing odd tasks to ease the burden on them moving in. Like they had me painting fences, moving furniture taking a load of trash away and this went on for a couple of weeks I think. Anyway the guy gave me something like £30 - £40 (and this was back in the mid 90's as well) which probably isn't that much money in retrospect but I was literally like 10 years old and I NEVER got an allowance. His girlfriend would often make me lunch and give me glasses of Coke but then it got to the point where they had no use for me so it was over as quickly as it started really.

You should've waited just a tich longer for that Rad bundle that included not only Sonic 2 but they threw in Sonic 1 absolutely free! Sonic 2 can julienne fries and fit conveniently in most tackle boxes.

  • @saratov99

Hey Chris! Why would you want to go for Genesis in 1992 if you already had 386 DX40? Seems like big downgrade to me. Going from Civilization, Dune 2 , Wolfenstein 3D, all those great RPG's and point and click quests to Sonic? I don't know man. Must be really into platformers. I lost my appetite for platformers very quickly after i got my first PC in dec. 1994. And by the way Commander Keen 4 and 5 plus Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion in my opinion are some of the best platformers ever. May be it would be wiser to use Genesis money to buy a sound card? Your situation is very close to my heart 'cause i was in the same position. In 94 i only had NES clone and since my birthday is in January i used to ask to combine presents into something special. So i asked for Genesis, but my folks got me a 486 DX2 66 and i never looked back. Console peasant died that day :)
