[Coury] Its so interesting to see things divided up like this. As a kid, the gaps between some of these game's release dates seemed so huge. In my mind it was years between sequels. But really, they were crazy close to each other.
The Sega black with grey grid motif was so great. The whole esthetic of the model 1 Genesis line is second only to the Neo-Geo in my opinion. It bugs the hell out of me that they just abandoned it after a few years. So much so that I started designing my own custom black/grid covers for my modest collection. I like how you have them on your shelf, it looks great.
This was fun. It was like hanging out with an old friend. A shame about giving your collection away, but the reasoning behind it, to help out people going through rough times, is very nice. I'm not into golf, but I enjoy video game golf. I tend to prefer Mario Golf, Hot Shots, Neo Turf Masters and that style, just for the extra-fun presentation. But golf makes for good video games. Sega started using those cardboard boxes late in the life of the Genesis. I think Comix Zone was only ever released in that style box. As for Street Fighter 2, it's not so black and white as to which is better. Between SF2 Turbo on SNES, SF2 SCE on Genesis, and even SF2 CE on PCE, each version has distinct advantages and disadvantages. I think a case can be made for any of them being best. The SNES version, which is the one I actually had back in the day, is my least favorite. I think it plays ever so slightly worse than the others(controls seem less responsive making combos less consistent, in my opinion). The bigger problem is that the music is very spotty. Some is good, but some can be very bad. Ken's stage theme is quite horrible to my ears, and I've seen that brought up as an issue elsewhere. I don't want to ever hear that version again. I like the music better in the Genesis version. Obviously, the Genesis version has scratchy voices and color issues, but those don't bother me much. However, the Genesis has the most detail and effects in the background of the three. The PCE version is very nice with great color and clear samples, but flat backgrounds and music that I consider decent. There's a thorough comparison of the Genesis and SNES versions on Atari Age. Some of the odd music choices on the SNES really are a deal breaker to me now that I have more choices. As someone pointed out, there's a rom hack to fix up the voice samples a bit. There's also a hack that reworks the color palettes a bit too.
I remember selling my NES and all my games to get a Genesis at launch. I was all about upgrading and the Genesis had me hooked with its graphics. I was 14 and couldn't care less about the NES anymore. I was ready to step up. I owned every launch title at some point, stores were still letting you exchange games back then and I was trying them all out.
51:40 Neat Game Pro book. I've not seen that before! Its using the same cover art from GamePro Issue #7 (February 1990). I like the art of the early GamePro mags.
55:55 I love the launch model Genesis! That's definitely the best one to own cover. Just as with the first Genesis poster, they have the Mega Drive version of the Altered Beast cart on the cover. Oh, and the unreleased TeleGenesis modem, shown on the poster but listed on the back of the system box.
Awesome! I started doing this with mine a while back. I love the original black grid style with smaller logo. I wish they never changed that. By the way, I'm not sure if it's common knowledge, but while doing some research on release dates based on my receipts, I noticed the UPC numbers follow the order of release dates, mostly. They definitely match up to how I bought most of the early ones. I'm not sure why some are 10086 011xx and some are 10086 010xx. Perhaps they were meant to be released on the same day? Anyway, this also seems to minic what SNK had done with Neo•Geo AES releases I.E. NAM-1975 (first ever release) is code NGH-001, 2nd game is Baseball Stars Pro NGH-002, and so on. Heres some examples of Genesis UPC numbers: 10086 01100 is Altered Beast (08/89) 10086 01101 is Super Thunder Blade 10086 01002 is Ghouls N Ghosts 10086 01102 is Space Harrier II 10086 01103 is Super Hang-On 10086 01004 is Zoom! 10086 01005 is Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle 10086 01105 is The Revenge of Shinobi
Batman was the first game I ever imported for my Genesis. I have a feeling many others did as well, after seeing it in an EGM preview. It's strange that Sunsoft used NES version Batman screen shots for the back of the USA Genesis box.
Nice video. I have my Genesis games in chronological order of when I first played them back in the day. :) Also, that beautiful Genesis 1 box is the launch one. It's the same one I had.
I take notice of Genesis spine art too. My favorites are those out of the ordinary designs that start on the front cover and wrap around to the back side like Cool Spot, Streets of Rage 2, X-Men; or those which use the border color / pattern around the front or back cover art and wraps around to the spine at least. A lot of Konami games did that, but Taito does it as well.
I was really excited to see that this video was over an hour long. I enjoyed every minute of it and I'm sure I'm not the only one who would enjoy an "eight or nine-hour long" video of yours.
I dig your Genesis collection! That's all I played from 1st grade to 4th grade, so it's one of my favorites today. It looks like my Genny collection is comparable to yours in terms of quantity (60-70 games I think), but yours has way more complete boxes and manuals. They look really great on your shelf. BTW Splatterhouse 3 is stupid expensive these days. Sub-$100 CIB would be a bargain.
Since these games hail from the pre-world wide web days. I mostly used Usenet posts to nail down approximate release dates. For the PS4, it should be exponentially easier.
Great video. I'd like to see more of this content. After watching this video, I am tempted to reorganize my movies and games in chronological order. I've always used alphabetical order, but I'm open to giving my organization a shakeup. It may only last a short time, but I think it would be neat.
Separate comment, because it's kind of amusing. When my wife was young, she had a Master System because my father-in-law got it on clearance. Great Golf was one of the games they had. Her younger brothers and she would fight over that game because they'd always hit the game out of bounds because it made a funny sound. She still gets riled up when one of them bring it up, you know, like 30 years later.
I've now watched this video about 3 times. The nostalgia is strong with it! You were right to stick Revenge of Shinobi in with the 1989 games. We got them in on 12/30/1989 in Albany, NY. I also bought the Power Base Converter at the same time. I scanned my receipt here ( www.videogameobsession.com/photodump/NA/Video_Game_Receipts/Receipt-1989-12-30_GEN_RevengeOfShinobi_Sega_Power_Base_Converter-BOX-vgo.png ) I also keep mine in a similar style, but slightly different. I separate by year, but then alphabetical for each year. Have you ever realized that you can (pretty much) tell the release order by the UPC numbering? I noticed this a few years back and have started cataloging them. The first 3 digits also dictates the genre. I still need to fill in some of the gaps, but here's what I have so far: www.videogameobsession.com/photodump/NA/Sega%20Genesis%20UPC%20Coding%20(VGO%202019).txt I Tweeted this last year and All Nilsen responded with some interesting info. Come to think of it you might have responded too.. in which case ignore this post. Haha.
Just finished watching the vid. Cool collection you got man. Makes me crave my old Genesis, which I don't have anymore. I only have a Valis III game with the box and manual like brand new. I sold my genesis to get cash to buy a Neo Geo. Hey, have you seen the retro games available for the Nintendo switch? there are tons of Neo Geo games available very cheaply. What are you thoughts about that? I always wanted a shooter called Last Resort. I finally got it for the switch and looks great. I also love that you can simulate the old CRT look of old TVs so the games don't look pixeleted. I find interesting that now with all the retro nostalgia happening young people thing that we used see square pixels when playing games in the past. They don't know that TVs had poor resolution and they used interlaced to blend frames. So we never saw a crisp frame like we do now. Miss the 16 bit era. That was the best time of video games. Keep up the great work. Keep making videos. =)
I didn't really deal with Sega Genesis very much because I bought a Super Nintendo early. It probably wasn't until 1993 until we got our Genesis so we only had a handful of games. We did pick up Jurassic Park. Your organization style made me think how my games are just organized by genre rather than by release date. Although I will admit that Genesis' hard cases were vastly superior for storage than the way Nintendo gave you that cheap covers for their NES / SNES cartridges. What did you think of Wing Commander for Sega CD? I loved Wing Commander and kept playing the series all the way to Playstation 1. Nice collection and terrific recollections as per usual! By the way, Star Trek: the Next Generation game for Genesis is fun. I like the background music, everything from Mega Man to Super Castlevania IV!
This was a really great video, after watching it the first time it made me think differently about how I organize my games. I typically organize all my games alphabetically which is quite convenient from an efficiency perspective, but the way that the Sega Genesis labels are not all uniform made me want to try your method as they are ugly when organized alphabetically anyhow. I never thought I would like organizing my games alphabetically so much, so far it is only the Genesis games I have organized this way but it has given the collection a more historical perspective. Its great to see so easily the time of release of games, and then compare them to other games released before or after to the see the impact certain games had on the library, or even to simply compare them technically. Having all the of late released red label games at the end makes alot of sense to me now as they are often the most refined games (technically speaking) on the system. One negative is that I need to keep a spreadsheet to track the games and their chronological order, but its worth it. Thanks for sharing this video, it really made an impact on my collection, and even my perception of games as a whole.
I need to thank you as this video had me go out and buy PGA Tour and NBA Live 95 for Genesis! The 16 and 32 bit generations were my favorite time for sports games before they became so different. I think that change started to occur in the PS1 generation but I didn't really feel it until the PS2.
great video as usual! I kept all of my PS3 games in a releasedate order for years. I still keep lists for all of my games sorted by system and then by releasedate. I like how you can go back in time by doing it that way ^^.
Loved the vid. I have my Everdrives sorted by year too. That ol' Master System is still useful because using the Genesis you can't run F-16 (and maybe other titles, can't remember) due to it not having the old SG-1000 stuff. And of course that means you can't run dedicated SG-1000 games on the Genesis either, which you should be able to do on the MS. And yeah, some of your viewers are F1 fans. Well, at least one.
Hey Chris. If you know about the Mega Amp you probably know that there's different motherboards on the gen 1 Genesis systems. The ones with high definition graphics (earliest) I believe usually have a superior sound processing compared to the later models. In any case it was great seeing more of your setup. I do have to say I'm very jealous of that RGB monitor. Cheers
The model 2s (except for a few revisions) with the Mega Amp mod are superior to all model 1 revisions. Model 1s use a sound chip which has timing errors that screw up sound effects and soundtracks like that of Earthworm Jim. There's an old thread on Sega-16 which discusses this in detail with sound clips from various models, modded and unmodded.
I had my Wii U collection in chronological order of release too, stopped doing that because some boxes weren't ideal in certain space. Now i barely have an order, but i have my boxes divided by use, how new are them and the big boxes. Wow, your stores had some real gems in there, the stores here all have the same blackjack PSP game.
Love me some Genesis I played Shinobi III last night it's early morning when I'm posting this Revenge Of Shinobi came out December 2nd 1989 there was various revisions due to copywrite that's why some copies have 1990.
I have a loose copy of Sonic & Knuckles in the cartridge drawer that I went through later in this episode. I think I probably just forgot to mention it in the video...
My Genesis was a Genesis 2 version with Sonic 2 packed in. Man, Tails was a huge pain in the rear. Special stages had higher ring requirements, and he'd never get out of the way of bombs. His constant dying during the regular stages was a pain. It also took me a while to figure out I could get rid of him, and it made the game much more enjoyable, and I love that you confessed to not realizing you could do that. :D You didn't have it there, but both Sonic and Knuckles and Earthworm Jim 2 had cardstock boxes. They were so freakin' fragile. Loved both games, hated both boxes. Re: Street Fighter 2: People are down on the Genesis version because of the voice quality. There's a hack on romhacking.net that updates the audio driver. Same samples, just different code. It's SO much cleaner. If you have an Everdrive, you should check it out - the Genesis version is simply better because of the 6-button controller's button layout. :D
In Europe the later boxes we got were blue instead of the red ones the US got. I always thought our ones looked better because the Sega logo itself is blue. The red boxes looked pretty terrible. Also, the Electronic Arts spines here were all black and yellow, with the exception of some of the sports titles. It's interesting to see all the small differences across the pond! Also, I'm not completely sure, but I think Shadow Dancer isn't counted as a Shinobi game because you don't play Joe Musashi in it. You play his son.
Nice collection! Star Trek TNG was my favorite TV show too in the 90's. Although, I could never get into any Star Trek based video games. Hated the "red" Genesis box covers. Always loved the old-school Black/Gray grid-like boxes. I wish they never changed it. Truxton: the official video game of Classic Game Room (got a chuckle from that line)
Thanks! I agree, not a fan of the red boxes. I've never enjoyed any of the Star Trek games either, but to be fair I don't think I gave any of them enough of a chance. I know I had Star Trek: 25th Anniversary for the PC back when it came out, but I didn't really get into it. I think that if I had had something in that format but based on TNG back then, that I might have gotten into.
Nah. That's a good sorting system, especially if you're knowledgeable of dates. For my most of my game collections, I go genre >> alphabetical (but if it's part of a series w/ different names I put them together)...my movie collection is a little more intricate..I do it by Release year, genre, alphabetical (and if it applies, region) and finally format.
Growing up, I was never a Sega kid. I just hated the D-pad on it. It just never felt right. Although I did love streets of rage 2 lol. No crappy D-pad could keep me away. But it is always interesting to see the other side of the fence.
46:10 I have a copy of Sonic that looks like that EUR cover, but has the Genesis logo. I haven't been able to find too much info I on it, but I am 99% it's authentic since I bought it in 1998 from a U.S.eBay seller. I only bought it because of the alternative cover art.
Great video. What's the big box from 59:50? Reminds me of some 19" server equipment, but seems from the front it's a CRT TV? Super deep for a TV if it is.
I think it's probably just because there was less light, since I was just counting on the natural light from the window. I may have also been using a neutral color profile, though. I'd have to double check.
I'd say that ordering the games by alphabetical order is the *logical* reason, but to me ordering them by release date is the more reasonable way... Nice collection btw ^_^
Looks almost the same as my genesis library, which is EA non sports together, then black box and non standard boxes like renovation and data east, then late release red box, then greatest hits, lastly EA sports games. Of course all mine are alphabetized in their appropriate sections.....guess I'm not completely crazy
I think I got it on Amazon? But it was like 11-12 years ago. It's just a media shelf, like for CDs and DVDs. All the little shelves are adjustable and whatnot.
Not just an excellent collection, but the games look great on your shelves, too. I'm not a serious collector myself, even though I have in excess of 300 games, but I can admire a nicely displayed collection like this. Edit: "Sports games have got way too complicated for an old guy like me." What are you, 41, or 42? I'm nearly old enough to be your dad. If you don't like modern games, fair enough, but don't use age as an excuse. Games might be more complex today, but you hardly need a degree in programming to play them. You're in your early forties, not your early eighties, for goodness sakes. I honestly think, without meaning any disrespect, that you are wallowing in the past like someone thirty or forty years your senior.
Yeah, what a cluster F of a race this morning. The F1 game is actually pretty good, yeah. The road moves up and down rather than just side-to-side, which makes it feel more 3D (and more realistic). Still, it's just a 16-bit racing game, so you have to have realistic expectations when playing it.
Mine are real random, for example do they require a battery swap I usually do it every 5/8 years, are they region free, how often do I play them, no real logic just the way I do it.
Only you can pull out 1+ hours on "Are my Genesis games in a weird order". Only a genius would also mention that the person whom asked about the ordering of what was on his shelf actually went by the handle _"Whatsonmyshelf"._ edit: WHAT YOU CAN NOT HAVE TAILS FOLLOW YOU AROUND? ok i must research that which reminds me I want to see a video on NES game 'A boy and his blob'.
Is your copy of Altered Beast the pack-in version? Mine is and the clear plastic has a very different look and feel from the commercial Genesis boxes. Truxton and Turrican are making me jealous.
I see that 688 Attack Sub game there, thinking about it now that was such a dumb game, but I had it when I was young and I loved that game, my friends hated it, I probably played that for hundreds probably thousands of hours.
I don't understand why anyone would put everything alphabetical Then you get bad games with sticky labels touching all the good pristine condition ones It just ain't right
I never liked putting my games alphabetically. I go by genre and it depends on the system as well. For example, 1st party Nintendo games always go first.
It was pretty close during the console war days, but I think by the time both systems had been discontinued, the Super Nintendo had sold more consoles than the Genesis.
Hey let's not give the crappy US Gold credit for making the classic Flashback! I guess they published it in the States. It was made by the great French devs Delphine
[Coury] Its so interesting to see things divided up like this. As a kid, the gaps between some of these game's release dates seemed so huge. In my mind it was years between sequels. But really, they were crazy close to each other.
I think that when you're a kid, you perceive time differently. A year feels like a really long time, whereas as an adult, a year is no big deal.
Only you could make an hour long video about your your genesis games being in a weird order. Love it!! The longer the better in my opinion.
Been a while since you uploaded something. Started to miss your vids. Thanks for the upload.
Can't believe I watched over an hour of you describing stuff that's sitting on your shelves. And I enjoyed every single moment.
Thanks, Disco! Glad you liked it!
this guys not the bad.guy; not the good guy. He's *THE* guy
This was fun. It was like hanging out with an old friend. A shame about giving your collection away, but the reasoning behind it, to help out people going through rough times, is very nice.

I really love how you put your games in that order. I'm now waiting for my Tommy Lasorda , Thunder Force 3 and Lightening Force . GREAT VIDEOS
This was nice to have a candid view on your Sega collection, thank you for sharing with us.

Wow, I never knew that. Now I want to go home and check it out.
I'd love to see a setup tour on this channel at some point. And see how you go about capturing and actually playing your games.
That sounds like a great idea. I'll think about doing that in the near future.

Thanks, Mike.
CGQ+ was wanting to do this to my ps4 set. How did you keep track of when each game came out to get them all organized?
Since these games hail from the pre-world wide web days. I mostly used Usenet posts to nail down approximate release dates. For the PS4, it should be exponentially easier.

I need to thank you as this video had me go out and buy PGA Tour and NBA Live 95 for Genesis! The 16 and 32 bit generations were my favorite time for sports games before they became so different. I think that change started to occur in the PS1 generation but I didn't really feel it until the PS2.
Nice! Which PGA Tour did you get? They're all good on the Genesis except for PGA Tour 96.
First PGA Tour. I'm digging it and considering picking up PGA Tour II, PGA Tour III, and PGA European Tour.
great video as usual!
+googleboughtmee You're right, I forgot about being able to run SG-1000 games. I actually did that for the SMS launch vid.
Hey whats that music that starts at 2:43 it sounds pretty cool. Enjoyed the video man even 6 years later!
Surprised not to see Sonic and Knuckles, it's essentially the second half of the Sonic 3 saga!
I have a loose copy of Sonic & Knuckles in the cartridge drawer that I went through later in this episode. I think I probably just forgot to mention it in the video...
relieved to hear that! also great to know there's at least one other person out there who rates the original Sonic higher than its illustrious sequel!
You didn't have it there, but both Sonic and Knuckles and Earthworm Jim 2 had cardstock boxes.
Back in the 90's game dude was the store I bought all my games from loved that place
I'll take that Master System if you don't want it! I miss mine. Had one in 1987...
Great video. I probably said the same thing 3 years ago on this video, I just put this on today as I'm brewing beer.
So glad I'm one of the cool kids that subs to CGR+!
Great episode, man!
comix zone and rocket knight are my fave games on genesis
Awesome video as usual! More please!
46:10 I have a copy of Sonic that looks like that EUR cover, but has the Genesis logo.
I haven't been able to find too much info I on it, but I am 99% it's authentic since I bought it in 1998 from a U.S.eBay seller. I only bought it because of the alternative cover art.
Isn't that a Canadian variant?
It very well could be. That makes sense.
Great video as always
Youre back!
Great video. What's the big box from 59:50? Reminds me of some 19" server equipment, but seems from the front it's a CRT TV? Super deep for a TV if it is.
That's one of my Sony broadcast monitors. It's definitely a beast.
If you ever get the chance, have a play of Streets of Rage Remake from 2011. It's brilliant.
Heck, yeah, chronological FTW :)
Absolutely agree about modern sports games being way to damn complicated.
Another great video from you Chris. Have you changed your Camera or settings? The image is softer than normal.
I think it's probably just because there was less light, since I was just counting on the natural light from the window. I may have also been using a neutral color profile, though. I'd have to double check.
Nice shirt bro. Love it!!
I'd say that ordering the games by alphabetical order is the *logical* reason, but to me ordering them by release date is the more reasonable way...
Nice collection btw ^_^
CGQ u need Mega Turrican its a awesome game
We were robbed of not having an Alain Prost game :( for all the kids that didn’t like Senna. Alain even drove a Williams with Sonic feet on the side!
Cool collection. I always prefer the early genesis games.
"It seems the Australians are always getting screwed on that kind of thing"
*sniff*...... yes ;-(
Great seeing the NHL94 on there!
Heck yeah. I have all three versions.
Looks almost the same as my genesis library, which is EA non sports together, then black box and non standard boxes like renovation and data east, then late release red box, then greatest hits, lastly EA sports games. Of course all mine are alphabetized in their appropriate sections.....guess I'm not completely crazy
Those bookcases look like they fit games perfectly. Where did you find them?
I think I got it on Amazon? But it was like 11-12 years ago. It's just a media shelf, like for CDs and DVDs. All the little shelves are adjustable and whatnot.
The F1 nerd stuff isn't lost on me, keep it up - enjoyed your look at the Domark F1 game :)
Another fine video!
Phntasy star iv only came in cardboard box
Why is that boxed copy of Lethal Enforcers inside the Genesis cart holder instead of on the shelf?
That's just the manual for the game.
Great collection. Nasty crash for Ferrari today in Singapore. Is rhe f1 game from Ireland any good?
Yeah, what a cluster F of a race this morning. The F1 game is actually pretty good, yeah. The road moves up and down rather than just side-to-side, which makes it feel more 3D (and more realistic). Still, it's just a 16-bit racing game, so you have to have realistic expectations when playing it.
Mine are real random, for example do they require a battery swap I usually do it every 5/8 years, are they region free, how often do I play them, no real logic just the way I do it.
Nice video, liked it. And oh my god "Asiaton oleskelu kielletty" sign on the wallet at the end :) #finland #flex
Only you can pull out 1+ hours on "Are my Genesis games in a weird order". Only a genius would also mention that the person whom asked about the ordering of what was on his shelf actually went by the handle _"Whatsonmyshelf"._
edit: WHAT YOU CAN NOT HAVE TAILS FOLLOW YOU AROUND? ok i must research that which reminds me I want to see a video on NES game 'A boy and his blob'.
Is your copy of Altered Beast the pack-in version? Mine is and the clear plastic has a very different look and feel from the commercial Genesis boxes.
Truxton and Turrican are making me jealous.
I believe so, since it came with that Genesis that I showed. Not 100% sure though, since I"m not the original owner.
Everybody hates tails butnprobably dint hate when he gets cheap hits on your enemies
I don't care if my sega genesis cartridges is in weird order I didn't buy it just too put them in order I brought them to play them
What av selector is to the left of your model 1 Sega CD-enhanced Genesis @ 59:00?
It's a "Bandridge" brand scart RGB switch.
Thank you. I'm always looking for a better selector. I haven't made the jump to RGB-ing all my consoles though I understand the benefits.
Hey, can you do Phelios as weekend rental? great game but so hard
Yeah, I think I could probably do that.
I see that 688 Attack Sub game there, thinking about it now that was such a dumb game, but I had it when I was young and I loved that game, my friends hated it, I probably played that for hundreds probably thousands of hours.
Hey I thought Flashback was by the same British guys who made Out Of This World, not US Gold?? Maybe I was misled by 90s game journalism...
I think US Gold was just the publisher...
@@CGQPlus And those games were French not British
The thrift store thing is done I've been in some that want more than the game stores
Is that the Sega power strip there plugged into?
No, unfortunately not. It's just a regular power strip.
I don't understand why anyone would put everything alphabetical
Then you get bad games with sticky labels touching all the good pristine condition ones
It just ain't right
I never liked putting my games alphabetically. I go by genre and it depends on the system as well. For example, 1st party Nintendo games always go first.
Did the sega genesis sell more than Super Nintendo in USA?
It was pretty close during the console war days, but I think by the time both systems had been discontinued, the Super Nintendo had sold more consoles than the Genesis.
So Gauntlet 1 and 2 are on the NES, Gauntlet 4 is on the Genesis. Where is Gauntlet 3? I’ve never seen or heard anything about it.
Hey let's not give the crappy US Gold credit for making the classic Flashback! I guess they published it in the States. It was made by the great French devs Delphine
Yes, you are correct!
How can you not like strider wtf lol
I think on the game Factory cart you got ripped off I love my Atari
Alphabetical order is horse sheet. I put games in order of importance. Random to others? Yes. IDGAF!
688 atack sub not get even 1 second mention lol.
Holy shit do I see some vita games?!
Hahah, yup, I have some Vita games down there. Awesome system, but it just didn't have the games. At least for me.
