Loved this look at Gradius for the PC Engine! I remember playing the NES version a ton, but am pretty unfamiliar with the PC Engine port. I’m really enjoying this format, and always look forward to new videos from the CGQ media empire. Thanks Chris!
I agree with you about pronunciations of game titles when we were kids versus now. We used to pronounce Gaiden in Ninja Gaiden and Ryu in Street Fighter differently back then because we were just kids and because we couldn't hear people pronounce the words correctly on the internet so readily. I prefer to pronounce words such as these the same way I did as a kid. It keeps the nostalgia going so to speak. I just chuckle when people correct me.
I just love the Gradius games. They are all fantastic, except Gradius 3 arcade. That one is just crazy impossible. Love the SNES port of it, even with the slowdown. The series has great tunes too. Great entertaining video, thank you.
the people that hate the pronunciations so much they 'stopped watching' are just trolls. people that really understand pronunciation also know that regions have different pronunciations. there is no right or wrong pronunciation. just regional dialect differences. there are multiple pronunciations for japanese worlds within different japenese dialects. its really pointless to even try to pronounce things 'correctly' there are multiple ways to pronounce it correctly no matter how you look at it.
This was a fun episode, the bonus level was legit. When you mentioned Super R-type it made me think how my mom bought it for me when I was a kiddo and at first I hated it cause it was so hard and no checkpoints made me so mad but like I tried it again a year later and finally put in enough time to get ok at it. I loaded up the NES on the nintendo Switch and played some of this and like got owned so bad lol! Keep up the great work :)

I've been wondering about that Turbonanza mod; it's quite recent I think. S-video is a good option to have, and Insurrection Industries makes some really excellent Saturn video cables.
So I get why people think of Defender as the grandfather of these games but I always felt it was a different thing because in Defender you are really managing a single persistent space that just wraps around at each end. It really is a game about playing defense. I think Gradius and other shmups are really descents of space invaders and galaga rather than Defender.
there's a much more Arcade accurate port can be found on the PCE/TG-16/Core Grafx mini! It and Salamander Near arcade are my reason to buy a Core Grafx mini!

If I ever won the lottery or found out I’m Donald Trumps love child, I would pay Chris to quit his job and do this full time. But I think he would decline stating the pressure of trying to do good content so consistently. But I would watch him do a review of a power drill. The guy is a dude and it just relaxes me listening to him 😎
Chris is one of very few people who could say "beating it off camera." And it not be very weird.
