MJF is setting himself up for a very long career, even after he retires from the ring. We're probably going to lose MJF eventually to Hollywood. The one advantage he has is that he actually looks like a normal person and has a full head of hair. So when he's doing action movies as a super villain and dark humor comedies these other guys on the AEW roster are going to unfortunately be dealing with chronic pain, multiple injuries and one surgery after another.
He’s really the only one worth watching because he stays in character, and never does things that character wouldn’t do. He’s smart enough to know just because everyone knows what wrestling is all about (which is why it’ll be gone in 20 years thanks to the nerds that have to know every detail), doesn’t mean you have to make fun of it and you can still act the same way the guys did back in the day, and that’s what works to get people interested. I don’t get the attitude all these guys have of “everyone knows it’s set up, so we shouldn’t ever act like it’s legit”.
@@wjl2068 there's a big Irish man that comes off as real in WWE too he proved it against Gunther. I think that program with MJF playing the cowardly yet cocky heel would be amazing.
Carl Jung said the following about the UFO phenomenon, and I think the quote applies here and now to MJF: “We have here a golden opportunity of seeing how a legend is formed.”
Stone Cold Steve Austin developed so naturally, so organically that he became a top level star that was basically an anti hero & having an anti hero in wrestling was fresh & brought wrestling to huge levels thousands in the crowd millions & millions watching on television. MJF is amazing but its not really comparable IMO!
MJF is a true heel. He stand out. He stays in character at all times. He has a old school mindset. Today's wrestlers don't know how to wrestle. In 2024 I can see MJF going to WWE. WWE will benefit from having MJF. MJF will be the top heel on raw or SmackDown. I will definitely tune to watch MJF if he comes to WWE. If MJF goes to WWE it will be a big loss for AEW. AEW is a better show with MJF. MJF has more personality than some of the talent on AEW
Not trying to be a dick. But Y2J ain't the same Y2J I actually liked. He was good in Japan, WCW, ECW, WWE. He just isn't good anymore. Mox is to busy being a Walmart Stone Cold, Dollar Tree Terry Funk and cosplaying as Nick Gage to be any good. Wardlow needs more reps. Tony killed his momentum. Same with Danielson. And sorry, MJF vs Wheeler Useless or Garcia ain't worth shit. But that all Khan cares about apparently is those two goofs.
@@poindexterflex3528 of those 3, arguably Wardlow, but he's still not great, as for Jericho, as much as i've always liked him, not a chance unless a miracle happens, and Mox is great, that is, a great example of how you can be crap and be considered a top guy in a company
@@davebauman3911 So I feel that Wardlow is the last person he should work with considering they capped their program fantastically and any additions to that would have to be Wardlow putting MJF over, which would hurt Wardlow already worse than he's been hurt lately. Jericho isn't even Jericho anymore, sadly. And you took the words right out of my mouth about Moxley. I think Danielson is the only one he can have a great program with now.
i see MJF more like Piper back in '84-85 (minus the coke problems and ultra hyperactive persona). a lot of it is more like MJF knowing the crowd and how to poke and prod them. Piper was, of course, better in that because Piper was more creative and he had such a unique delivery. But I think MJF academically is smarter than Piper was without question and so he comes across as someone a little more snooty than Piper. But the ideas are the same. And right now, there's a question whether or not MJF is going to turn. It's reminds me a bit of when Piper came back and was trying to get the Piper's Pit back. Piper was still Piper and by that point, Piper had grown to a whole new level of being a legend that he was welcome back with open arms by the public. Of course, the other thing that helped was Piper going after someone the people had gradually come to hate even more than Piper. But if you look at Piper's content from '84 or so with the Rock n Wreslting Connection to 86, he was still preaching family values. And he still was a scumbag in his antics. But by that point, the people were with him. On a relative level, that's where MJF feels like he's at. The real question is whether or not he's going to finally go babyface. I'm sure he can but he's just much better as a heel because he doesn't have to try hard. Also, the people he's slowly making that turn against (with Stokeley Hathaway), they aren't anywhere close to being hated like Adrian Adonis was at that time. None of Stokeley's people are good heels by a long shot. Stokeley can talk for himself but he's missing either experience or understanding how to be a really effective heel. More than that, there's no dividing issue that the people can get behind to have a good reason to hate Stokeley. In Adrian Adonis' case, it was pretty obvious why he was hated. Plus, they had some of the best heels with Jimmy Hart, Muraco, Bob Orton, etc. to really solidify Piper as a face. Then there's the other question of MJF just switching back to his usual antics. That's more of a modern wrestling issue especially with AEW where they try to defy expectations to the point where you get de-sensitized (cf Daniel Garcia). And MJF has been on those borderline moments where he seems about to turn but switches back sometimes in the same segment. After a while, you just stop caring because you don't really trust the booking. Quite frankly, if he does turn face, I think it'll be a huge mistake. But at the very least, he should commit to it for about a year. As for Austin, i can't see anyone being near where Austin was in 1997 in either company. Corny's description of Austin is more like Wolverine, an anti-hero. MJF really isn't an anti-hero type.
He cut a great face sounding promo on Wednesday. Im not saying he would be a great face but maybe in a couple years if he stays they could test it. Heels tend to get over with a crowd usually whether they mean to or not.
Funny enough, I think Jim hit on why people also love Wyatt during this, he’s different. In a world where everyone’s smart Bray shows a vicious commitment to his admittedly batshit insane ideas that it makes people question where’s the performer and the performance drawn. This smackdown was a great example of that, for as many people taking it as face value Windham Rotunda being grateful there’s a portion just as large saying it’s all a work and Bray isn’t talking about the fans or himself. That commitment from both MJF and Bray is just palpable even though they’re on opposite ends of the character spectrum. Really excited to hear Jim’s thoughts on this Smackdown, even though nothing will probably turn him around on Bray.
@@rogueelephant7994 And the thing is, I believe that it was Brian who first told Jim to check out Bray Wyatt. Then the HORRIBLE booking turned them BOTH off. Now, it actually seems that *Jim* is more willing than Brian to see what Bray does next!!!
If I had to compare MJF to any WWE superstar it would be Chris Jericho early 2000s. He could talk & work and thus hold his own with the Mega Stars like the Rock and Austin.
@@jackkottwitz5236 in the ring Jericho was definitely better and it’s not close, on the mic I’d rate them about the same with MJF being a more classic 70s/80s heel
MJF doesn't have a Bret Hart like Austin had back in '97, and that's a huge hole in MJF's character. Imagine if Punk could stay healthy (and out of trouble) or if Bryan Danielson stayed consistent, and either one of them feuded with MJF for an entire year. Then imagine MJF just never letting up on either of them on a weekly basis through fantastic promo's and true kayfabe matches where you believed in their hatred for one another. It'd be epic. Cuz if you really think back to '97, Austin was CONSTANTLY on Bret's ass. And it worked because of Bret's unparalleled match making skills that complimented Austin's crazy mic skills which sent Austin (and Bret) into that next level of main even stardom because fans never got tired of watching them work together. If Punk or Danielson would be allowed to do that with MJF, you could have one of the all time great storylines in wrestling, for sure. But Tony seems intent on having underneath guys (underneath compared to MJF) feuding with MJF, which does nothing to skyrocket MJF to being the "must see main event" that he should be for the long term.
CM Punk was supposed to be that "Bret Hart"-esque character for MJF to rub off of. They had their initial (very good) feud and then pressed pause. It seems the plan was for Punk to be champion probably for a while (and feud with Moxley and others) and then eventually, maybe, crown MJF after about a year or so. Hence why he got the belt when he came back which coincided with MJF's return. Problem is that company is run by a grown teenager with a short attention span that has no clue what he's doing. Look at how Bryan Danielson's been muted/crapped on after his feud with Page, when he should've been a "touring heel" type of champion.
It's really a crazy thing. He's bulletproof. He wipes off any shit booking they put him in. He survived working with Jericho. He gets squashed by Wardlow and he's gotten more over than the guy that squashed him. Wardlow has been stuck in the mud ever since (no fault of his own), and MJF has elavated.
How did that make sense though? He was pissed about his position/contract during the end of the Wardlow thing. He no showed the meet and greets. Threatened to walk out, real or not who knows. Then got squashed in five minutes. Then showed up on Wednesday and called the owner a Mark. Then disappeared for over 3 months. Now he's this? Someone has to connect the dots for me. Seems like it doesn't equate.
@@Highly3666 How did MJF being mad about his contract erase 11 Wardlow powerbombs? He was perfectly fine on that Wednesday when he was screaming cursing and calling his boss a Mark. Why did he leave for three months? Does he still think ex WWE guys are taking his spot? WTF kind of booking is this?
probably Jim Cornette's favorite wrestlers present wrestler : John Cena ( face) , MJF (heel) of old : Dusty Rhodes or Terry Funk or Jerry Lawler (face) , Ric Flair (heel)
Since Ricky Starks is a baby face now, and there are no weight classes in AEW, RIcky Starks and MJF might be good. And if it isn't, turn Agogo face and build him up for a face off with MJF. Agogo has some legitimacy as a fighter, fans can believe he'd at least have a shot...don't put him with a Dark Odor like group and make him a depressed drunken heel like Page though. in the mean time, if Danielson can get his head back there's another guy who fans would buy kicking MJF's head in, concussion issues aside...and Darby Allin versus MJF was okay once. That could be done again down the road, hopefully when promos are clicking alittle more for Darby. Wardlow's not completely gone either. Depending on just how dominant MJF is and how much Wardlow manages to preserve his status, he could be the one to put the fear of death in MJF again. Booker of the year still has a large roster with all of the tools to make it work, but Ring Of Honor really needs its own time, booked by someone else, so AEW can focus on continuing to build itself. Maybe a booker who answers directly to Tony Khan, give Khan the final say, but let someone else do the real work on it. Reestablish Joe, Lethal, Daniels, Kazarian, Castle, Martinez, Castagnoli etc.
WWE has way better stars than MJF. All he does is talk and as long as he's in AEW he will never become a big name like a WWE Superstar. MJF is overrated
Only difference in WWE is a bit less swearing, but less is more given how watered down swearing is in AEW cause every bum with my promo skills gets to say f***’n every 3 words.
Jim is so Literal sometimes. I don’t think the emailer was saying that MJF is literally Stone Cold. But rather Stone Cold’s run in 97 compared to MJF’s run now. To actually answer the question, I personally think for MJF to get to that star level he would’ve had to beat CM Punk for the Title. But since Punk is gone I think he has to go WWE to reach that level.
The only part is...wwe would never allow half of what MJF says. It just would be a watered down version. He would have to figure it out another less "vulgar" way
The contrast between MJF and Hangers is massive at this juncture. I know exactly where MJF stands, and even in his duplicitous moments he tends to communicate what he wants. MJF is sincere. Hangers now has the rep of draggin' gossipy crap confusingly, even if he's honest about his anxiety he hasn't had the talent to communicate what it is he's feeling, and has the weight of a disappointing main event run behind him. So you get the fans cheering for the heel MJF during Hangers' big ol' emotional moment. Long live the new Moses, better than the old Moses.
(Campbellsville, KY resident) If they ever came to Louisville MJF would be the primary reason I'd pay to see that mess. Also FTR of they make their once in six months appearance then.

Love mjf but not at all for reasons Jim listed.. if I’m honest his in ring work is what’s the same old stuff we’ve seen heels do forever and the guys he says do the same old stuff are the ones that have crazy matches full of things we’ve never seen.. unique reversals based on their opponents move set as well as their own.. mjf is so over because we know it’s not real.. if this were the old days he would be hated but since we do know it’s all a show we appreciate his dedication to the character and he’s really good too! Wrestling would suck if everyone worked the same way.. what’s best for us wrestling fans who like wrestling is WRESTLING! Styles make fights.. I would think not to many people would watch if everyone worked the slow paced low impact style of the 80s

His best work may have actually been with Richard Holliday -- since their snarkiness fed off one another to keep things amped up a notch. The AEW mic work has become repetitive Diceman schtick -- but give the people what they want......just like the 1980s arena rock band (that has been a mainstay on the summertime county fair/rib fest circuit since 1997) using the same setlist from 1985 over and over and over again; Do Ya Want One More.
It's more of actually studying history instead of copying it. Roddy Piper and Matt Bourne much like stone cold Steve Austin & loose cannon Brian pillman is the "same" entity or person. It's up to the promoter / booker to decide which side of the coin to go with.
I watched wrestling from 1991 until Benoit did the deal. I have been watching again for 8 years now and I haven't come close to enjoying it or having a favorite wrestler. And then MJF came around and he is so obviously fucking awesome that it gives me hope for the thing I struggle to find the awesome in

MJF from now and the last 3 years is basically the same as Roddy Piper between 1984-87 and if u want proof just youtube Piper during those years because MJF is eerily similar to Piper in that era

@Hypno_BPM I totally agree. He's a good wrestler, and it needs to be showcased more. I hate the heels that ALWAYS run away and hide behind other wrestlers. Even Roman Reigns is kinda guilty of this. On a serious note what is the hype on MJF? Don't get me wrong, relative to any other talent on the aew roster he is gold, but comparatively I don't get his hype. I don't know a lick about him from mlw apparently he was red hot then. To me, his voice seems manufactured. He sounds like he's an ivy league mens quartert singer. So when he's doing action movies as a super villain and dark humor comedies these other guys on the AEW roster are going to unfortunately be dealing with chronic pain, multiple injuries and one surgery after another.
"Nobody believes anything is real so they cheer for the devil"
That's deep.
I like mjf because he is always in character. He's good at blurring the lines.
Imagine MJF going to WWE. We could get Gunther vs MJF. The two last believable workers today. I'd love to see this program
I love Gunther man. He is legit
@@wjl2068 there's a big Irish man that comes off as real in WWE too he proved it against Gunther. I think that program with MJF playing the cowardly yet cocky heel would be amazing.
It wouldn't be the same version that's "over"
WWE wouldn't allow half of what he says
That promo he cut on dynamite was oddly babyface. I imagine this dude could be mega over if he ever switches.
Timing is everything.
he knows exactly what he's doing
Carl Jung said the following about the UFO phenomenon, and I think the quote applies here and now to MJF:
“We have here a golden opportunity of seeing how a legend is formed.”
Isn't MJF now an anti hero?
I see many people don't know what an antihero is. 🤣
AUSTIN was just a badass. And soon enough, he became and still is THE GOAT when it comes to being a DRAW. No one will touch AUSTIN's GOAT status.
You mean than ALL of the AEW roster
Mjf has more personality than any active wrestler besides maybe danhausen or r truth
@@mattmaccay2351 you lost credibility when you mentioned Danhausen..he is nowhere near MJF in any respect. Not sure why anyone likes that dude.
Jim at his very best. Absolute gold. How the F isn't he in the hall of fame?

As much as jim loves Mjf he despises pockets and I can’t wait for jim to talk about orange cassidy winning a belt from pac. Should be entertaining.
MJF has unfinished business with MOX , Jericho and Wardlow. A full years worth of great opponents to overcome
Which of those three would you classify as great opponents at this point?
Perfectly summed up
Funny enough, I think Jim hit on why people also love Wyatt during this, he’s different.
Really really loved this comment
@@rogueelephant7994 And the thing is, I believe that it was Brian who first told Jim to check out Bray Wyatt. Then the HORRIBLE booking turned them BOTH off.
Now, it actually seems that *Jim* is more willing than Brian to see what Bray does next!!!
If I had to compare MJF to any WWE superstar it would be Chris Jericho early 2000s. He could talk & work and thus hold his own with the Mega Stars like the Rock and Austin.
Fucking facts if mjf goes to wwe he'd be their chris jericho he should even debut similarly to him
No. Jericho was never on the same page as MJF.
@@jackkottwitz5236 in the ring Jericho was definitely better and it’s not close, on the mic I’d rate them about the same with MJF being a more classic 70s/80s heel
@@jackkottwitz5236 Jericho was bigger
Hahaha… the midget is overrated in the ring
Not to mention his amazing feud with CM Punk.
@@djpaul8705 tf? How?
@@Highly3666 How did MJF being mad about his contract erase 11 Wardlow powerbombs? He was perfectly fine on that Wednesday when he was screaming cursing and calling his boss a Mark. Why did he leave for three months? Does he still think ex WWE guys are taking his spot? WTF kind of booking is this?
probably Jim Cornette's favorite wrestlers
present wrestler : John Cena ( face) , MJF (heel)
of old : Dusty Rhodes or Terry Funk or Jerry Lawler (face) , Ric Flair (heel)
MJF is everything that he says he is.
Hey I lived in Morristown for a while!
Mjf is going to usher in another golden age of wrestling. He is easily the greatest thing current wrestling has going for it.
WWE has way better stars than MJF. All he does is talk and as long as he's in AEW he will never become a big name like a WWE Superstar. MJF is overrated

Austin was already a babyface in 1997 when he won the IC Title from Owen via a botched piledriver at '97 Summer Slam.

Only difference in WWE is a bit less swearing, but less is more given how watered down swearing is in AEW cause every bum with my promo skills gets to say f***’n every 3 words.
Austin in 1997 was the last true heel jim describes it best
Holy shit Cornette is brilliant. Where the fuck do I sign up to have him mentor me for 18 months I’m willing to travel
Someone just tried to compare MJF to the guy who changed the business. My goodness
I don't understand the fascination with MJF

Wrestling would suck if everyone worked the same way.. what’s best for us wrestling fans who like wrestling is WRESTLING! Styles make fights.. I would think not to many people would watch if everyone worked the slow paced low impact style of the 80s
Absolutely beautiful rant. I like Jim but I feel like he often says the same thing over and over. He's saying the same thing AGAIN here, but the way he presented it and the way he tied it off at the end was stunning. 💯
honestly all wrestling promotions were dead to me till MJF came around... WWE absolutely fell apart and is a joke compared to what it used to be, and I don't have the desire to watch AEW aside from the clips of MJF
Austin didn't do what he did for money. He wouldn't cry & call his boss a mark. He would just beat the hell out of his boss and earn his money.

I'm sorry but comparing an edgelord like MJF to the biggest badass in wrestling history (Steve Austin) is complete lunacy.

@Hypno_BPM I totally agree. He's a good wrestler, and it needs to be showcased more. I hate the heels that ALWAYS run away and hide behind other wrestlers.
Even Roman Reigns is kinda guilty of this. I am *TIRED* of the USO's and the Bloodline interfering every single match. Makes Roman look WEAK, when he's not.
@@Bowler6611 i agree with roman and them but the past few weeks have been really good and different. How they’re slowly starting to break apart with Jey disliking Sammy and being louder than Roman.
@@Hypno_BPM Yes I agree again! I mean, EVENTUALLY they're gonna take the belt off of Roman.... right? I was soooooo sick of Hulk Hogan towards the end of his title run, and so were MANY people. So the way to take it off Roman WITHOUT making him look weak, and elevate OTHER Superstars in the process could be to have the Bloodline "implode" 🤔. And then depending upon Roman's plans to stay with the company or go to Hollywood, there's plenty of NEW stories to tell.
