    Great video Ryan! Could not have said it better myself about lawn care being frustrating at times haha. We skipped spring down here in GA as well!

      Seems to work best for me but I am ready to start striping this bluegrass again. It's been far too long.

    I didn't put starter fertilizer down with seeds, because I had previously seen your suggestion on waiting a bit, which makes sense. It has been five days and I am just seeing a few new tiny blades coming in. I'm thinking about putting some down (Scott's Triple Action). My only concern is temps are going to be mid to upper 80s for the next week (bad timing for that).

    Fantastic Video! You have helped me already and can't wait for the summers videos! Here in lower Michigan we skipped spring, we have had 80s for 4 days now! It's hot here! Great edits! Thank You!

      Ryan Knorr Lawn Care Yes! 60s to 70s are great with a mix of low 80s once in awhile, but definitely not this early! Thanks for replying!

    Ryan, good advice on starter fert! I always put it down as soon as i drop seeds then the existing grass gets too long and you can't really mow! good call brother!

  • @davewaveandrews
    @davewaveandrews 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I ran into the same scenario when I over seeded in the fall last year. I think I ended up killing a large portion of the new grass due to having to mow the existing grass. This year I'm going to wait until the new grass is ready to be mowed (at around 3"), mow the lawn then put the starter fert down and then wait two weeks to mow again to see if the new grass will survive. I think over seeding is harder than seeding a new area because of the delicate balance between existing and new grass.

    Hey Ryan, I just overseeded with Scotts Sun & Shade Mix yesterday. Based on your video, I couldn't tell if I should wait 3-4 days or 7-8 days before applying starter fertilizer (Scotts Starter + Weed Prevention). I also have Scotts Winterguard to apply and wasn't sure when that should be done (perhaps I wait as late as possible before the first frost?). Thanks so much for the quality and informative videos! This is my first time dethaching, aerating and overseeding!

      Don't use weed control on fresh seed, it can kill the seed. Wait until the new grass can stand 3 mowings before using weed control. Wait about 5 days after seeding and use starter fertilizer.... Worked for Scott's lawnservice and tru-green Chemlawn, licensed with ky and ohio department of agriculture previously.

    I really enjoy watching your videos. You have a lot of good ideas and tips. I’m in a cool season area as well and we’re starting to warm up quick too. I put some Scott’s weed and seed down this afternoon. I was curious what your thoughts are on the length of time I should wait to start spraying a post emergent liquid spray. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

      I haven't really used weed and feed but I think the chemical amount in there is pretty low. Just give it a week or so and then spot spray with liquid. Do that when it's not blazing hot out though.

    Hey Ryan...I'm from Indianapolis, and spring never showed up. I didn't even over seed this spring. I did apply starter fertilizer and a full load of Milo at the beginning of May. Then 6 weeks of drought (2.42 inches from April 15 to June 5), what a nightmare. On the other hand I was able to get the weeds under control, and my grass was green with a few brown spots, while my neighbors were brown with green spots. Around the 1st of July I'm going to apply a full load of Milo and a full load of starter fertilizer just before a rain. I know it's a bit late, but I haven't really applied that much fertilizer at all. Do you think this is a mistake, or should I just "THROWER DOWN"? Really enjoy your videos. Keep it up!

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say go for it on milorganite but I might wait for fall to hit synthetics. I do the majority of all of my fertilizing in the fall and it works great.

    So i was putting down starter fert yst and i dumped about 4200 sqft of product on about 1750 sqft area. It was organic Johnny Green starter fert. I was listening to a podcast and didn't realize how open the shoot was. Not to mention I put down the correct amount of Milorganite a day prior. HELP! ANYONE! I had called around for lawn care management quotes and one guy had taken it upon himself to sign me up automatically. So Sunday night, I put down my crab grass + fertilizer. Monday morning....the company came and put down their crab grass + fertilizer. Awesome. I felt like i could see the grass growing, and I was mowing very often :) Don't let it get out of control though - mow it often to keep up with it.

    So I think I am going to do a renovation on my front lawn this year. Question is I have a moderate Poa issue in the lawn. Will those seeds be growing strong with my new seed also in the fall? I have a light brown tint to my grass now from all the Poa turning brown already. Located in NE Ohio. Going to seed with a KBG mix this fall. Thanks

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      poa usually dies for the most part in the heat of summer but in order to stop it from gaining ground the next season a pre-emergent is going to be needed for that. I would do your renovation this fall and then just get pre-emergent down next spring before soil temps hit 55

  • @kje1414
    @kje1414 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ryan, you ever have any issues with striping in your lawn? I noticed your paths when laying the fert (@ 7:06) are pretty close to each other. Every time I try to broadcast back to the wheel mark of my previous pass I get stripes, so I opened my passes up and while I have reduced striping, now I think maybe I am not putting enough down. I have also tried doing a checker pattern at a lower spreader setting but that takes quite a while.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kind of depends on your spreader and how you get used to it. Depending on what I'm throwing and pace of walking I just kind of have a feel for how close I overlap. I wasn't going super heavy with this so I went with a little more overlap just to make sure I covered it well.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      10 pounds total. For bluegrass if you're over seeding it's about 1-1.5 pounds per thousand sq ft and about double that for a new lawn. Shed will hopefully start tomorrow or right away next week. We are not building it so waiting on weather and that part of it as well.

    Great video Ryan! because you overseeded and waiting for those seeds to germinate do you have to hold off on mowing at all? would that hinder the new grass if you did start mowing? trying to understand since i'm planning on overseeding in the fall if mowing would be an issue with the existing lawn when you're having new seeds coming through?

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can mow up until the seedlings start popping out and then you want to wait until they have matured enough to handle traffic. When I overseed ryegrass I usually wait about 10 days if I can from the time they emerge till first mow. I was able to fertilize and walk on this 8 days after seeding just because most of the seed hasn't emerged yet and the same would go for mowing if I wanted to but this actually is not growing very fast yet (the existing stuff I mean) so I have been lucky there.

    • @genemanning2236

    Ryan Threw down starter fert, Milo, and sprayed for crabgrass a few.weeks ago. Mowed for the first time.last weekend. Experiencing quack grass. Any ideas on getting rid of it? Overseeding looks like an option??

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've got a ton of it and unfortunately round up is the only way to kill it that i know of. However unless you can selectively paint the grass blades then it will kill the other stuff around it if you spray.

    • @davewaveandrews
      @davewaveandrews 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The crabgrass prevent will prevent any seed germination so you won't be able to over seed where you put the cb preventer unless it is especially formulated to work with new grass seed.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is the first time I've tried it but you want to wait until the grass is actively growing again (so after 2-3 mows) where it should bounce back fairly quickly. Mine is dragging behind but it's been a weird year for weather too so I'm trying to be patient.
