This concert was to celebrate quebecs 400th year. This was the last song of a 3 hour concert, watched by a crowd of 250,000 people. This was in the middle of Céline’s “taking chances” world tour. Celine sang with every other artist who performed, so she was pretty tired at this point. This was the first time that she had ever sung on stage with Ginette. When celine was 12, her brother sent a cassette of celine singing to Ginettes current manager, Rene Angelil, as ginette was the most popular singer in Canada at the time. He had just lost Ginette as a manager. So when he heard Céline’s voice on the cassette tape (a song that Céline’s mom had written), he couldn’t believe her voice. Celine was 12, Rene was 38. He got behind celine, and sent her on the path that he had envisioned for Ginette. This opportunity to sing with Ginette meant so much to celine, because if it hadn’t been for Ginette, celine might not have been such a star. This concert was such a great 3 hours of the best that Canadá can offer. I’ve watched the concert probably 100 times, and I’m not fluent in French by any means. I often have it on the tv whilst working around the house, but always have to sit and watch this last song.
It was also aired on live TV across all of Québec. One of the best performance I've seen in my life. Being french Canadian. Seeing how everyone reacts to ginette showing up mid song. It hits deep in the heart. Toward the end of the song. When celibe songs about going even further and ginette said that once you are higher you might find different paths. I take it as a moment where she passes the torch over to celine. Truly a big ansd beautiful moment in Québec history.
I know the story by heart since I'm from here and grew up with them. You got the story perfect ! Merci , enfin quelqu'un voit ce qu'elles vallent ici xxx
I cried the first, the second , the third, the fourth and all the following times I listened. I live in Belgium ans speak French: WAUW WAUW. The singing, the eotions and the lyrics. WAUW WAUW WAUW
Céline Dion wanted to reproduce Ginette Reno's performance of this song on Saint-Jean Baptiste Day, June 24, 1975, the national holiday of the Québécois. Ginette's performance in 75 is considered by Quebecers to be the greatest live performance in Quebec. Jean-Pierre Ferland composed the song... and sadly passed away yesterday.... RIP Jean-Pierre!
"how do you celebrate your national holiday?" "well, there's a lot of music: local artists perform free concerts in parks then there's a bonfire and we drink beer"
Ce sont les 2 plus grandes voix du Québec. Cela se passait à l'été 2008, sur les Plaines d'Abraham, lors des festivités du 400e anniversaire de la ville de Québec.
Just imagine Ginette Reno was over 65 years old at that time just imagine her voice when she was 25 just a monstrous powerful voice you saw Celine crying it’s because it was a historic moment in Canada 🇨🇦 because Celine ultimate idol has always been Ginette Reno when she grew up vocally in fact she imitate her quite a few times on television when she was young so you can imagine how emotional she was to finally sing with Ginette Reno who was considered when she was young one of the greatest female singers in the world with Aretha Franklin and Barbara Streisand at their prime
Ginette Reno is the best female voice of Québec, J.P Ferland is the writer of the song and Celine was the animator of that show, check Céline how she is émotional.
Something that some of you don't know is that at in her 70's Ginette was deaf, that why she didn't stop at the same time then Céline, but she still sings in tune even she ear nothing, eveytime I ear her singing, she make me cry.
Our great songwriter (of this song (written in 1969) and multiple others) and singer Jean-Pierre Ferland passed away yesterday, 27th of April 2024 at the ripe old age of 89. Quebecers and Canadians are all in grief, this monument will be thanked, somewhat celebrated, and receive a national funeral. He developed and sustained a great deal of help in our frail culture which is mostly buried under American English culture.
Oh, das macht mich so traurig. Aber weißt du was? Sie hinterlassen so unauslöschliche sachen wie dieses Lied hier... Das macht sie ein stück weit unsterblich
Jean Pierre Ferland is a singer and songwriter. It’s her song that Céline and Ginette Reno sing. They are the two divas of Quebec. This is a historic moment for Quebecers.
A little more about Ginette Reno. In the sixties she one of a kind on Motown and sing as the top artist. Also make research on her she sang jazz too. One thing very amazing she sing I will survive. Céline has mentioned it numerous times that the international career René Angélil built for her was initially meant for Ginette. Ginette was one of Céline's idol when she was young and if Ginette had kept Mr. Angélil as her agent, we may have never known Céline.
Hi Alex. I’m a French Canadian who lives in the USA. I grew up listening to Ginette Reno. Did you know, René Angelil, the ex-husband of Celine Dion. Before managing Celine’s career, he wanted to bring Ginette on the same level as Celine in the USA. She did not go for it. She did not wanna go international. But she had the potential for sure. Ginette also made a surprise appearance at The voice in Quebec. Appearing as a contestant. She got 4 chairs turned in a matter of seconds. The coaches recognized her voice right away. It was a special moment. Thx for your show.
No. Ginette said several time that they did not went for it because she went too big from depression after being abused by ex lovers. René also cut Laura Fabian from super stardom as well, that is well documented. She got robbed, full stop. Best contralto singer in the world.
The manager of Ginette Reno was René Angelil, the husband of Céline before he met Céline, Ginette refused the international career that René offer her, one day he met Celine and made her the star she his now for sure she work hard for that, but with his experience in show bussiness he help a lot, Céline always had and still have a lot of respect for Ginette, our local diva that just like Céline sing with her heart and always give everything she have to the public
Of course being such a small population, everybody knows everybody in the art world, and elsewhere here in Quebec. So of course Jjean-Pierre, Ginette and Céline have known of each other, and each other, since way back when! And no matter who'd they'd have brought on stage it would have been the same thing. That's what was precious at that time.
I am glad you enjoyed it! There is so much layers to this performance, history between the singers and Quebec music history. It all comes together in this historic performance! You are great!
The name of the guy’s in Notre Dame de Paris is Garou, another good Québécois singer’s. I watch this performance couple of times every year and cry every time🥹 Thank you
Great reaction, if you like Ginette Reno and know the famous hockey player Guy Lafleur, i suggest you to watch her performance at Guy Lafleur funeral, she sang "l'essentiel ", another émotive performance. Enjoy
i was there that day, this was in plaine d'abraham, and let me tell you, Celine is Celune, but shes still scare of Ginette, theres no one like Ginette, and in this performance you can feel celine wss in inferiority
OUCH I would say that is your interpretation...LoL Celine very much RESPECTS Ginette Reno. ABSOLUTELY! And I totally respect your opinion if you prefer Ginette. But to Say Celine is scared ... I doubt it. Overwhelmed maybe. Also remember Celine had beend already singing for hours with different artists. She was singing their songs with little rehearsal AND in their key... notice the key change when Ginette started to sing. This was HUGE moment in Quebec music history... it is not lost on either of them. I looove Ginette too, but Céline is arguably one of the top singer ever... her technique, her versatility is unmatched.... that is more than opinion. Listen to her singing ALL genres Celine is a virtuoso musician and her voice is her instrument. My 2 cents LoL
Absolutely not. The song says, "A little higher, a little further, I can't hold your hand no more" She was Céline's idol, and got kicked out of René's roster for being too big. Céline felt remorse all her life because Ginette is the best contralto singer in the world, but I don't think she feels inferior - and she isn't - but her singing those words to her, while all those years she couldn't perform with her idol and had to live with the fact Ginette herself was kicked out because she replaced her and was prettier... it's pretty damn emotional for her. She couldn't hold her voice much and I can understand.

Ginette Reno is the most powerful and moving singer ever
We Quebeckers gave Céline to the world and kept Ginette for ourselves. Both are legends.
She was my dad's favorite singer, the only one who could make him cry. Listening to her sing is like a hug from my father
Well said 😂
Merci Céline, Ginette et Jean Pierre. Merci a tous les québécois. Notre langue est magnifique.. C est beau.

She showed Mme Reno such beautiful respect. This humility and grace only added to the overall emotional power of this incredibly resonant performance.

Sorry, "late husband".
Jean Pierre Ferland wrote this song. He was like a french Leonard Cohen. Ginette Reno's voice inspired him for a long time.
The man is the one who wrote the song! He is gone since a few months, he was a great composer!

Il manque juste la québecoise de coeur et d'adoption : Lara Fabian
JP Ferland wrote this song like in 1969. A French Canadian legend, just like Celine and Ginette but he was famous before before them.
