The main difference here with Apple Pay is how convenient it is. You don't have to open a special app - just put the phone near the terminal and it pops up automatically. This combined with fingerprint recognition makes it the first mobile payment service that might actually be successful.
Matthew Robb Arthur Wright That may be true, but it's not really taken off. I'd imagine part of that is the limited availability. Google Wallet is only available in the USA, and considering it's been more than 3 years and still no sign of any international release I'd say it's firmly stuck as a US only product. Apple Pay, on the other hand, has Apple actively getting major banks on board, and that's the main part that Google left out. Google went around the banks by taking the charge, then charging your credit card as a payment to them. Apple Pay is direct from your account/card, which it can do because the banks are on board with it. Like it or not, Apple have done what they have a habit of doing. Being "late" to market with a product or feature, but making their implementation the best you can choose from. Apart from 3rd party keyboards. I have no idea what's going on there.
Apple pay won't ever work anywhere else because in usa you pay a small amount each transaction towards the bank where as most other places you don't and bank accounts are free. Apple want banks to pay every transaction but other banks don't get extra money from cardholders like that so they would be losing money
I’ve been using Apple Pay ever since my bank offered it to me. I haven’t used my credit card since unless I know the store doesn’t offer Apple Pay. It is just so convenient. I recommend that everyone uses this but not everyone owns an iPhone.
Prasad Naik Good to see people being so sensitive and respectful on the internet as always. I'm not autistic, and no it isn't obviously sarcasm. Let's take your point though, and presume that I was, and didn't understand sarcasm. Wouldn't that turn off a decent chunk of people from watching this video since they'd react the same way I did? In an informational video like this, genuine comments and "sarcasm" should be made distinct. I understand your point, just don't think there's as much need to be an asshole about it.
The general rule of apple pay. You don't ask if someone has Apple pay. You just ask if 'tap' is ok. Say debit or credit and use apple pay. Most people don't know you could use apple pay wherever tap works and tap works in so many places.
Maheshwar N Are you from the U.S. or Europe? Because tap here in the U.S. isn't very widespread as it is overseas. We barely got chips in our cards but they don't have any NFC on them.
Mahesh Samsung Pay on the other hand accepts more banks, and works everywhere, you don't even need tap or NFC for it to work. If you can swipe a card, you can use Samsung Pay.
That's simply what Apple does. They mainstream existing & niche tech, by attempting to make it easier to use. The easier it is to use, then the more likely you'll use it again.
Why has The Verge not tried the other platforms? If I remember correctly, the PayPal App has had mobile payments on android for a long while now, and even the big banks here in Australia have their own apps and mobile payment using NFC too.
If I remember correctly you have to pay an extra service charge when you use PayPal and it's certainly not as fast as Apple pay since PayPal always needs an internet connection.
alex91008 Uhm, was I arguing that PayPal was better than Apple Pay?No need to try and start an argument, I posed no value judgment. I was just curious why The Verge had not tested the other various platforms.
Just tested it out at Walgreens today. Works just as advertised. Extremely simple, I'm happy with it and I can't wait till more retailers start accepting it.
Would you attempt to buy something at a pop up stall with your credit card? That first part of the segment was stupid. Can't wait for this to finally come to the UK soon where we have many more NFC terminals.
Faraz Bukhari By marketing I didn't mean just ads about it. I also meant their brand power which is fueled by their marketing and also the way they present their features and let their features be known, inviting all the press. I used marketing as a general word for all these things.
Faraz Bukhari umm no. first, marketing, second, partners and third, they launched it just at the right time since retailers will have to replace their current devices in 2015 and will likely purchase a NFC enabled device for customers to check out on
But it's much more secure. And don't forget that you still need to find your card and bla bla bla. It might not be that much faster as of now because you people in the US still use the old magnetic stripe but here in Europe we don't use that anymore. We enter our card, wait for the retailer to enter the price, you then enter your code and wait a few seconds for the transaction to complete. That alone already takes up to 30 seconds/ 1 minute and once the US will switch to that system next year you will notice that paying with your phone and Pay in general will be much faster.
I'm firmly in the camp of people who can't wait for this to roll out internationally. I live in Australia, and we've had NFC enabled debit/credit cards for years now, and it's starting to become a standard feature in most banking apps here. So as a country we're pretty used to Wireless payments in the form of Visa PayWave and MasterCard PayPass, and almost all major chains have an NFC enabled EFTPOS terminal. Given that it uses all that same stuff, I can't wait till Apple enable this here because I can finally ditch my wallet. My bank does ATM withdrawals in-app now, so I wouldn't even need my card to withdraw cash. Seriously, in countries with relatively high iPhone ownership that are already using NFC payments, this is going to be awesome. Don't bother mentioning how Google did it first. 3 years on and it's still US-only, so I couldn't care less about how you were doing this on your Galaxy Nexus. kthxbai
Remember this service has only been activated 7 days ago. It's so stupid that now some are complaining about the limitation in stores. It's always good to do it right rather than do it early. Google just spend 3 years to prove "Google Wallet" is such a failure.
I'm glad he said that at the end IT'S NO DIFFERENT THEN ANY OTHER MOBILE PAY SYSTEM! ( I still don't see this form of payment declining use of cards or cash anytime soon though.)
A1exB1 Samsung Pay: 1)swipe up (even if the screen is off). 2) put your fingher on the fingherprint sensor. Much faster and it doesn't even need NFC terminals. It works everywhere in the US and the world and supports most banks. I've been using it for 3 years now.
i think it is much secure paying through phone pay cuz finger print payment is way more secure than putting in the pin. And even if they stole ur card number somehow would that even matter since its only the front side of the card and u need a verification code which is at the back.
I`d really like to use Apple Pay, but i live in Germany. And we don`t have Samsung Pay, Google Wallet, Android Pay,Google Hello or Apple Pay. It sucks. PLEASE COME TO EUROPE (i know it works in the UK) I hope Apple will make an announcement on its March 21 Event about Apple Pay. It must come in 2016 to Europe!
Yes, of course. I must Pay Cash or with a Debit Card. (in Germany EC Karte) Here is no Samsung Pay, Apple Pay, Google Wallet etc. accepted. Ive you have a Samsung Device in Germany there ist no option for Samsung Pay right now. The Same with Apple Pay. When you start the Wallet App on your iPhone there is no Apple Pay shown up. In the Settings is Apple Pay also not shown.. And it was introduced two years ago... and we don't get a comment from Apple when it comes to the rest of Europe...
"It's really not that much different but since it's on the iPhone..." At least they can't admit it I guess. FYI softcard (formally ISIS) has worked on the iPhone for a while with a special case.
In the UK chip and pin is widely adopted, plus we have the thing where we hover our card over the chip and pin machine. Mobile payments will be a lot more beneficial for the US. Seems like a lot of hassle to me, it's a lot quicker just getting my card out and hovering it over the machine.
This is very interesting. It might actually help slim our wallets a bit and perhaps be a safer alternative for credit cards here in the US until we adopt the Chip & PIN system for them.
Wouldn't it be dangerous if the stores did not know who bought the items since they don't keep any of the credit card info and only receive payment? What I'm getting at is what if someone took a picture of my card, how would I know until it is too late.
I was really surprised when I got to the US and couldn’t use my Apple Pay in most places. Like, mostly, you do it in big chains, like Starbucks, McDonald’s, Walmart or Target. Weirdly enough, I could not apply it in Costco or Taco Bell for some reason. Like, maybe I’m a snob or a boaster or this may look like some kind of racism (and I’m not trying to offend anyone) but American infrastructure (I was in Los Angeles area, LA County, Orange County) works really terrible if I compare it to the one we have here (Eastern Europe), where you can Apple Pay literally anywhere, even for a hotdog in a local kiosk.
Myles Hejmanowski Samsung Pay may actually support your bank, the support much more banks than apple does. It works everywhere where you can swipe and it doesn't need NFC to work. I've been using it for 3 years now.
it's very stupid everytime he says "can I pay with my phone?" sounds like he wants to exchange his phone for the hotdogs I'm still prefer the plastic cards with paywave/paypass feature
They get dislikes because they have shown a great bias towards apple over the years. If this was an apple company/website that wouldn't be a problem but it isnt. So now I assume that people thumbs the videos down before they even watch it, due to the verge's apple bias.
***** lol calm down buddy. I don't hate them, I was simply answering a question. And I'm sure the apple fans (clearly you fall into this category) would have something to say if they constantly praised android. And yes they can do what they want but when you put your product out in the world (especially on social media), expect people to respond to it, whether it's negative or positive. Just like the verge can favor apple if they want, people watching can dislike their videos if they want. Free country
Speaking of putting words in someone's mouth, I said you're an apple fan, never said fanboy. And while they may look pathetic disliking videos and etc, they'll still continue to do it. The verge is a free tech source, so people expect them to judge all products fairly that's all and obviously people don't think they're doing that.
The future implication of virtual payments worries me in that less seem to know how 60 hz correlates to 120 volts and how the breakdown of that system would effect everything built on top of it. Hope cash sticks around for a while just in case.
ISIS, which became Softcard, which was bought by Google to make Android Pay. Android Pay will be especially attractive when it really utilizes the intellectual property it got from its acquisition of Softcard. I used ISIS/Softcard to get one free smoothie a day at Jamba Juice (for a few months), and it also came with $20 and 3 free Cokes. Google has at least reignited Softcard's partnership with Coca-cola to have automatic MyCoke Rewards collected. It's a start, but I'm very pleased using Samsung Pay until NFC becomes ubiquitous.

WHAT FUCKING HOTDOG STAND IS LIKELY TO TAKE WIRELESS MOBILE PAYMENTS?!

Samsung with the MST is not that convenient.. its more like hit or miss~ and most banks have already switched to PayWave since 2016 @@love.one-another
Does anyone else think this guy is a complete tool for walking up to random places and asking "Do You Have Apple Pay?"
That's simply what Apple does. They mainstream existing & niche tech, by attempting to make it easier to use.

Gregz0r exactly and that’s why they’re so successful, they are also the most reliable
How tf the corner store got Apple Pay but Walmart doesn’t
in japan we using the mobile payment like that since like forever...
that LAST statement is sooooo true
Conclusion; but since its on the iPhone, The Verge is all over it.
Why has The Verge not tried the other platforms?

alex91008 Not sure if it was nessasary tbh
prefer wait for apple pay to come here tbh paypal ehhhh

they way my guy said drugstores so calm💀💀💀
What if I put my nfc credit card, inside my iPhone case ..
boom Apple Pay. on any phone
i actually thought he said "Google, ISIS and a couple of more companies" as a joke
Missed so much the videos of yester decade of The Verge's video
"Google,ISIS...." lmao
Every Apple Hater can say what he wants to. But this is just awesome.
***** This must be the reason why google announced android pay one year later than apple
+Domtendo Fan Except Google Wallet was out a few years before Apple Pay...
It seems easier to just use a credit card...but it's still cool, just wish Google wallet caught on 2 years ago like it is now
It's all down to marketing.
Faraz Bukhari By marketing I didn't mean just ads about it. I also meant their brand power which is fueled by their marketing and also the way they present their features and let their features be known, inviting all the press. I used marketing as a general word for all these things.

"Google, Isis"
Me: "wot?"
Buying your favourite lollies after school be like
This video of him saying "it's not the first" will be so quaint in 5 years.
IT'S 2019 and there's still no APPLE PAY in my country
Remember this service has only been activated 7 days ago. It's so stupid that now some are complaining about the limitation in stores. It's always good to do it right rather than do it early. Google just spend 3 years to prove "Google Wallet" is such a failure.
Paying with just using fingerprint seems way more secure, faster and convenient! Like the way Apple implemented the Apple Pay!
Oh dear. An Apple related video. That's going to upset a lot of Android fanboys making them accuse The Verge of being biased.
I'm glad he said that at the end IT'S NO DIFFERENT THEN ANY OTHER MOBILE PAY SYSTEM! ( I still don't see this form of payment declining use of cards or cash anytime soon though.)
Except that it is. Other systems = enter pin, find app on home screen, nfc and pay vs apple pay = nfc with thumb on senser and done
+A1exB1 You don't have to open apps to use payment services on Android... It would be nice if you were aware of what you are talking about.
Key thing " it will be much harder for hackers" harder but not impossible
Apple Pay will pave the way for the standardization of NFC payments.
their is already a standard
SnipesHalo that's not what standard means
Samsung Pay killing apple right now
Samsung Pay killing apple right now
Samsung Pay killing apple right now
Nothing about buying stuff is revolutionary.
Exactly, since it's on the iPhone, all the others can now join the fun, if they play by the rules!
I have a otter box case and it's pretty thick will it still work even though it's a thick case ?
It took my credit union 4 years to offer this. Just added my card and mad my first purchase! Finally living in the future! 😂 💀 💳 📱
Things Are Looking Up In The Apple Community!
Well Done, Apple!
yep he said revolutionary..
iVerge
Pocketnow video name: "The New Money: Using Apple Pay in the Real World" Somebody is copying someone
That beat tho
omg iverge... why dont you show off google wallt?
Is that the brown apple leather case? it looks really nice on the black iphone 6
My question is does the NFC chip get easily blocked if you have a thick case on your phone?
no, the range of NFC is about 10cm
To be fair though you can't really use credit card for hot dog stands.... Or just some random stores on the side of the street, let along NFC.
Looking forward to using it.
*Watch this (slightly old) video for Apple Pay and answer the questions.*
Just like Google Wallet
Does this only work with credit cards, or do debit cards / regular bank cards work with it as well?
Both if your bank supports Apple pay
I think most of places where they support nfc payment you can use apply pay to purchase using the wallet. They don't have to support apple pay.
apple beat microsoft on this technology to the masses. That's an amazing achievement.
So if a store accepts contactless payment, does that mean you can use Apple Pay?
Most likely
Nope he said Isis, it’s a legit thing I know.
Gotta be better than google wallet which has been out for years but still isn't in Europe
It's cool but I don't see it replacing a credit card it will be very limited and it will maybe not work out of USA .
i think it is much secure paying through phone pay cuz finger print payment is way more secure than putting in the pin. And even if they stole ur card number somehow would that even matter since its only the front side of the card and u need a verification code which is at the back.
I will never go to a store that doesn't support Apple Pay.
Hateful comments in 3...2...1
Does it still work with a otter box case on?
Yes.
Out of all the banks I choose it had to be the one bought out by Samsung and no other phone can be used.
8년전부터 써서 부럽다... 한국도 조만간,,,!

FYI softcard (formally ISIS) has worked on the iPhone for a while with a special case.
"revolutionary" lol
Is it just an Iphone 6/Plus exclusive?
Do the same video now, 3 year later...
been doing this for 2 years now.
Want this to come to UK. Want the new iPhone either.
In the UK chip and pin is widely adopted, plus we have the thing where we hover our card over the chip and pin machine. Mobile payments will be a lot more beneficial for the US. Seems like a lot of hassle to me, it's a lot quicker just getting my card out and hovering it over the machine.
Ohy god I had to rewind several times. Did he really say ISIS was a payment option?
This is very interesting. It might actually help slim our wallets a bit and perhaps be a safer alternative for credit cards here in the US until we adopt the Chip & PIN system for them.
I dont know if i trust on how secure this system is.
USA card system is the most insecure in the whole world everyone else uses chip and pin which is 99.999% safe and USA method 50%
Matthew Robb So we are lagging behind in yet another category. This is getting really sad and greed seems to be the cause of all of it.
Except! None of these platforms will be in Canada...
2020 the apple chip that goes into your hand
Rahil H that's exactly what the Bible says, but it doesn't say it is a good thing😔
Apple vs Samsung pay in the real world
Wouldn't it be dangerous if the stores did not know who bought the items since they don't keep any of the credit card info and only receive payment? What I'm getting at is what if someone took a picture of my card, how would I know until it is too late.
It's up to the bank not the retailer.
what case he use to cover his iphone 6?
I was really surprised when I got to the US and couldn’t use my Apple Pay in most places. Like, mostly, you do it in big chains, like Starbucks, McDonald’s, Walmart or Target. Ill use my credit card. Thank you.
I wish my bank supported Apple Pay...
Myles Hejmanowski Samsung Pay may actually support your bank, the support much more banks than apple does. It works everywhere where you can swipe and it doesn't need NFC to work. I've been using it for 3 years now.
Little stores in Korea have nfc payment system.
Alex Yoon you clearly aren't familiar with what POS is mate, shallow
it's very stupid everytime he says "can I pay with my phone?" sounds like he wants to exchange his phone for the hotdogs
I'm still prefer the plastic cards with paywave/paypass feature
Can't get it to work with a Lifeproof case on.....
this is new to me
And now ?
I just pay with the NFC chip in my bank card. Way easier. And almost fully implemented in my country.
nathan074 and you track "transactions" in real time 😊
Where did he get that case?
From somewhere
It's one of Apple's leather cases.
Compare the tone in this video to the google Nexus videos..
hmm... also the two hosts don't look very similar
Bitcoin was the first to work on Apple devices.... Not apple pay.
2018 update ?
cool! so now you lose your phone and are ripped apart!
why do they get so much dislikes?
Because they said ISIS has a card payment platform. People didn't know about softcard which was formerly ISIS.
***** I'm a fan of android products and i oofficiallydon't give a crap what you use. Im not gonna judge you for it lol

I don't see the apple pay menu on the settings, and I've updated to 8.1
Go into your passport app. That's how i added mine before I knew it was in settings as well
my problem is it does not show up in the settings at all, Im using iphone 6 plus 8.1, is it because Im in canada?
samuelws1996 yup, only available in usa for now.
samuelws1996 Yes, it only works in the US as of now.
samuelws1996 Yeah it doesn't work here, even though pretty much all of Canada has been using NFC everywhere for a while now.
NSA like this.

Saving ur bank details on an iPhone, what dump thing to do. Hackers will certainly find a way to access some of ur details.
***** time will tell
Handing a piece of plastic to someone that can easily slide it on a skimming device is a lot less secure.
Can't wait for that to get hacked cough cough cydia jailbreak :3
