It’s awesome to see someone make stuff with simple tools... So many people on TH-cam have top of the line expensive toys I could never afford!. This video has also given me a better appreciation for all the hard work it takes to make a functional steam engine.
I've been calculating on boilers in school for 1 years, looked at the boilers on a couple of powerplants (up to 370MWe) and controlled a 'small' boiler with 2m^3 water. Your boiler works on exactly the same way as the bigger ones. The only difference is that the bigger boilers got a deionizing facility. You got the same safety systems and everything. Awesome boiler!

Machinists (like me) want to machine
every thing from castings on a mill or lathe.
I see much skilled hand work on the engine as well.
It puts many in their place.

I tinker and build in my workshop and am missing a lot of tools. I wanted to call myself an amateur tinkerer. But i see i have along way to go. Fantastic work. Might try to build one myself. Cant believe you built it at 16. so impressed

There are some channels on TH-cam, You find from time to time, that makes You stop all other activities and watch the whole content. It happens to me once a Year and 2019 is checked off on the firts day. Great videos, keep up the good work. I hope some day I will have place and time to tinker around like You do.

It's pumped in at the bottom.

Tig welding anything that has been galvanised is a nightmare. Burning off the zinc leaves loads of crap that will come out in the weld pool. You need to thoroughly grind down to clean metal anywhere the weld pool will touch. Otherwise use something like a 1.6mm 6013 electrode to weld it or at least try and even if it goes bad cos tiny stick welding is tricky the slag pulls a lof the contamination into it so you can knock it off, grind it back down and go over with another welding process.
Will your boiler and engine push boat with two people and some baggage up a river?
As long as the river doesn't flow, it will. 🤔
Hi, is a typical fire extinguisher good for the main body of the boiler? The wall thickness is around 1,5mm
I think it's a bit thin. Your boiler will corrode though quite fast and start leaking. No good.

Very interesting to see a steel fire tube boiler in this size. Most locomotive boilers that I have seen are copper, silver soldered. Maar, ja het was erg interessant en zeker goedkoper in staal.
In Europe, locomotive boilers were manufactured using the whole-steel boiling technique.
Peter, yes of course full size locos are all steel boilers, I refer to 5" gauge model locos and the like that are copper boilers.
Yes it is rare to see boilers of such small scale not made from copper,mostly because there's no advantage to steel on low pressure boilers of this size(aside from cost) and a whole lot of disadvantages,namely corrosion.Here in Australia you only see steel boilers on rather large loco's and they tend to run higher pressures than are allowed on the copper constructed boilers, so like 150+ PSI which also requires a boiler ticket to legally operate.Here if you want to run a boiler in public it has to be certified,built using specific materials and inspected regularly.Back in yee olden days there was (at least firebox anyway,possibly entire boilers) full size locomotives running copper,but that was a long time ago! It is still interesting to see this cute little boiler though, even if its not the way i would go about it myself!

Thank you so much!! It has a torque of about 3.75 Nm on the crankshaft. Don't know the hp yet butt I'm going to measure that to.
Scary corrosion! Do you treat the water and blow down(assuming it has a blowdown,it should!) after every use leaving boiler dry? Its essential to treat the water for steel boilers and blow down after use if its not going to be fired up in close future.To be honest youd be better of using copper for one such as this, they aren't as susceptible to water chemistry as steel,easier to form and weld and more than strong enough for the application.Rare to see such small boilers not made from copper.Love your work though,it is a lovely model.
No no treatment yet, I'm working on that. Leaving it dry is the worst thing you can do, you need to fill it al the way to the top when storing it.
@@TheDIYScienceGuy Late reply sorry, no actually miniature live steam boilers are blown down hot and stored this way. I actually operate certified miniature boilers that operate at pressures much greater than this little one (and pull train loads of paying members of the public) and i assure you this is how they are all stored. Full scale is a different story, ive also operated these and im talking main line locomotives that weigh in over 100 tonnes. Just a little experience ;)

That's pretty cool I love steam power that is awesome I like how it has a bevel gear drive to the propeller I have a suggestion for you though figure out a way to put a better valve gear to where you can adjust the valve timing and make it more efficient and more powerful like a Stephenson valve gear it uses eccentrics peace out have a great day

The DIY Science Guy oh I love your steam engine I wish I could build one myself I think you should hook up a generator to that little steam engine to produce electricity for an emergency cell phone charger so say like the grid goes down and you need a charge something you can use your little steam engine to turn a generator to charge a battery Bank peace out man good luck in all your endeavors but yeah I think I Stephenson valve gear with the eccentrics would be the easiest for you to build and if you make it we're at has an adjustable cut off that's team terminology in internal combustion criminology it's known as variable valve timing so once you get your steam engine up and running and you get the masses of the machine spinning you can cut down how much steam goes into your piston steam expands a lot so a little packet of steam will push and expand a lot more than you think so what's a way to conserve energy look up steam locomotives and their valve gears and their boilers they have the most efficient boiler of any machine because it has to create a lot of volume up steam also another suggestion have the exhaust from your engine blow out the exhaust stack I don't know if you have it that way if you don't what that does is it creates a draft like a Bellows and sucks more air into the fire very interesting video I loved it peace out have a great day

@@TheDIYScienceGuy You could try using a cylindrical parabolic mirror for the solar powered steam engine projekt. It would also be nice if you showed us how yout built that great steam engine, because after searching for it on youtube I haven't found any good guide how to do this.
