- The FULL LENGTH version of the Coal Fired Steam Cycle. See "Jenny" in glorious 19 minute detail!
Introducing the Sanderson Steam Cycle! Named "Jenny", this home built coal fired steam cycle was painstakingly crafted over the last 4 years to look like it could have been built in the 1920's.
A traditional coal fired steam engine on 2 wheels! You've seen nothing like this before.

A University degree does NOT make an Engineer. YOU ARE AN ENGINEER! Your abilities are Extremely apparent! Congratulations on a WONDERFUL creation.
U r right bro
Ur right , good comment
👍
After six years in engineering school, seeing this makes me feel both amazed and disappointed. Building this kind of wonderful machine is the reason I got into engineering but now I realize that I haven't learn much and hope I can get something as amazing as that bike working before I die.
@@yoyoo50 If you want to build something then build it don't procrastinate about it
Get this magnificent beast to a bike show and it wouldn't surprise me if you win "best in show" or at least a "crowd favourite" award.
BEST in Show - GUARANTEED!
Yes exactly
Same at a steam show I reckon
If he makes more of these and sells them, he could start a steam cycle gang and call them The Hell's Stokers.
Or the Stack Eulands?
hell's steam punkers ?
@@duggydugg3937 lol
They can market it as an evolution of the latest harley-davidson technology.
instaBlaster...
I can smell it. Takes me back to my time on the railway. She is a thing of beauty. It’s alive!! Thank you Wiz
It's a pity the film studio added music. Otherwise, what a great machine. We need more things like this, make the world a saner place...
Agreed! The "music" destroys concentration and atmosphere.
Sound is such an important part of experiencing a steam engine. Let the machine do the talking...
Yup, the cheesy canned generic rock and roll rears it's ugly head once more.
Saner? Perhaps unless we all go crazy waiting for steam to come up while we slowly recreate the famous London Fog.. ha ha ha
oh ..music... that's what ythat is
this is the most impractical motorcycle i have ever seen. Its a beautiful piece of craftsmanship
The poor guy never gets the steam pressure up high enough, because he has to demonstrate constantly a hundred things that require steam. That aside, he has a beautiful machine shop.
That is a thing of beauty. Love it when form & function come together to make something like this.
Except it functions worse than 140 year old steam motorcycles (velocipedes).
Guarda un po'' questa moto a vapore dei primi del '900. Era impegnativa...
@@mrnickbig1 Remember.first speed records!!!
The 'Jeantaud" and "Jamais Contente".struggling at about 100 Km/hour to win de prize !!!
Who won? Electric or Steam power ?
(I beg your pardon, English is not my.mother language)
All it needs is a period sidecar attached to it and it'd be brilliant for taking people for rides at traction engine rallies and the like (if we ever get them back again). And steam railway galas too. Good on you - great fun!
I might actually feel safe on a steamcycle if it had a sidecar.
Have the firemen in the sidecar
Good comment
Yes it will look great. Great idea.
I don't think it has the beans to pull a sidecar and passenger
The literal meaning of 'Steam Punk', what an amazing piece of craftsmanship! Kudo from PNW Canada!
Anthracite, 5:10, is the highest grade of coal available. It is almost entirely carbon, with very little sulfur, hydrogen, nitrogen or anything else to make smoke. It burns very hot, but is very difficult to ignite, hence the kindling and the paraffin (kerosene) soaked paper. He uses small pieces for easier igniting and faster burning, to make more heat out of a smaller burner.
... so it's running go premium.
Thanks for the explanation.
Good clarity, intelligent
A lot of truth in that, although a good grade Dry Welsh Steam Coal is just as high quality and clean burning, with just a touch more volities which makes it more controllable, very good steam raising, as well as a little easier to light. Currently easily available and no more expensive than Chinese anthracite, although all that may change is the welsh government is refusing to renew Foss-y-fran's extraction license.
Couldn't they grind the Anthracite into a powder? I read that it burnt very well and there was a steam train design that used powder coal.
I've seen steam cycles before, but none approach Jenny in elegance and craftsmanship. Beautifully executed.
I've built 6-7 steam locos with similar size boilers. Your workmanship is outstanding.
Too bad this man wasn't Scottish, He'd be Scotty, on StarTrek, great, great grand father.
I completely agree. I'm just wondering why he decided to use the Steam Tank fro structure and not build an undercarriage. Now, it's obvious his Steam Bike is for home use and for driving around the Neighborhood, but I am still left wondering. It saves on room not having an under-carriage and on weight as well. The tank is solid enough for structure, but the handles are directly welded to the Pressure tank and the front-end is supported by the tank and tank alone. That's concerning from a structural point of view.
Let me be clear when I say that I also agree, his workmanship is impeccable. And you certainly don't need to have a degree to be an engineer, and Sandy proves that. I'm just wondering why he didn't build an under-carriage or uni-body.
@@theshadowsovereign8914 in terms of traction engines (sometimes referred to as steam tractors in North America), the British tradition is to use the boiler as thr structural part of the vehicle as well as the source of power, so maybe he got inspiration.
@@alexhando8541 Yes, I just googled 'STEAM TRACTOR' and went directly to the images section. These Steam Tractors are considerably larger than the bike and they also use the tank as structure. Makes sense since these are huge tanks, but then again the wheels are mounted to the bottom of the tank, not the top of the tank. That is putting strain and stress and the mount points of the handlebars. The wheels are not 'holding' the tank in position, they're 'hanging' the tank into position. Albeit the fact Sandy installed 4 mounting points for the handlebars to the tank, it would have been more structurally sound if the handlebars would have 'cradled' the tank, instead of 'hanging' the tank.
This is an observation. I am invested in this as it has peaked my interest. It's a wonderful build. I'm a Plumber by trade, so I know what it's like working with copper and steam lines. This work is amazing. And please don't mistake my observation as being critical or being subjective. It is an objective point to a legitimate engineering question.
Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment. :)
Best custom motorcycle # 1
Brilliant bit of engineering! He is a clever chap but very modest too which is refreshing to see. He should do BBC programmes like Fred Dibnah used to do. Great character for it!
Beautiful job Sandy, It's got the look of 100 year old technology, I've been thinking of building one myself but using the technology of the 1930's Doble Steam Car using a steam generator which creates only the steam needed to power the engine much like an on demand water heater, then condensing the steam back into water and recycling it. also taking it one step further by using a radial steam engine mounted inside the rear wheel. I'm also thinking of using liquid fuel such as waste motor oil. but that project will probably wait until I retire. Like I said beautiful job, keep it up.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought of the Doble cars when I saw this.
Yes & steam cars are a level of magnitude safer than a steam bike. And the stanly steamer held the speed record for a long time!
@sourand jaded interesting ideas but the aggression and insults were uncalled for. Let people make what they wanna make
Love to see that come together!
It's a clever man that can build something without truly understanding how it works. Fantastic machine and so beautifully done.
Just goes to show there are still really good people doing really good stuff!
That is ridiculously cool. I could watch 4 hours of this.
Cool use of chipping hammer spring handles. I love that. I’m an American boilermaker I’ve built and repaired hundreds of boilers but steam train engines were the smallest. This is so cool
Beautiful machine. Steam powered anything is becoming a lost art and it's fascinating to see it put to use in unconventional ways.
Great interview and demonstration- perfect for an interested layman.
Good comment
Always loved old motorbikes but I've never come across one as truly beautiful and inspiring as this one.
There is nothing like building something with your own hands and seeing it work. What a gem!
Way cool..Thanks for sharing...would love to see it in person..
Az egyetlen kellemetlen elem az orrod előtti kémény.
Ettől eltekintve szuper!
Man of few words, million thoughts and ideas in the head.
Oh fer chrissakes why the music? let's hear the natural sound. and maybe more vision and sound of it running along the road?
100% steampunk approved.
But, i would like to see more riding.
This is genius. I love this mind bending cycle. What an unexpected treat.
Thanks Sandy.
This Locomocicle is a Beautie!! Chapeau to the Engineer ( Perfect for cold Winterdays)
It's so stylish; black with that fine gold trim, matching the polished brass. It just looks right.
This might be the most amazing machine I've ever seen. Please share more!
Congratulations! Your work is almost perfect! I think it would be interesting and more beneficial for the user to run the chimney along the length of the boiler cylinder, put it in an upright position behind the seat and install a venturi nozzle in it, which would use a small fraction of the steam pressure, but at the same time it would noticeably increase the draft of the chimney...!
Another variant, which would be more favorable for the hearth of the boiler, would be if compressed air from a compressor (piston) driven by the revolutions of the steam engine went into the venturi nozzle instead of steam...
Recently I developed a fascination with steam engines, and I have to say this is great.
When you see a video of a past work colleague, had to comment, as that's a beautiful bike, great work,
Brings back the original meaning to the phrase steel horse on the song wanted Dead or alive.
First of all, this is such a beautiful vehicle.
Lol! It's an exercise in the beauty of impracticality, but you can't help feeling he's having a massive lend of us all. Love the bit at the end when it dumps the contents of the firebox on the road.
the craftsmanship, very nice!
This is a piece of art, love it would love to have one ,great stuff thankyou for sharing.
Absolutely magnificent! His attention to detail is amazing!
The design is stunning
This absolutely is a peak in function and also design! Really fascinating!
My great grand father built one in Australia around 1900. It's still on display in Victoria.
This is the coolest machine ever build. Great job.
It's so beautiful I want to cry!
Beautiful work! Youre a talented individual. This kind of project is the pulling together of all kinds of interests and skillsets. Hats off...outstanding !
Beautifully mad. Love it. And still lighter than a few of the biggest modern production bikes!
Excellent video...great interview!
That is a brilliant idea having that fan on the chimney. to start the draft up the chimny. the damper help your fuel to burn slower. you wouldn't want water to enter the engine it would hydraulic it. I bet that's a heavy motorcycle.
He says the weight somewhere in the video. It's either 350 or 375 kg, which is an awfully heavy motorcycle.
I watched that whole video for less than 3 seconds of actually seeing the bike drive!!!!!
Great job! Beautiful piece of work. Thanks for sharing.
I'm blown away...🤯
This is the coolest thing I've ever seen and now I need one... thanks alot 😒
Brilliant a talented inventer , this is a priceless machine of beauty
I love the ingenious safety precautions built into this engine
Really wonderful! - Hats off to you Sir!!...
Very nice. Well though out, obviously designed to be used, and love the fact it's effectively laid out as per a traction engine!
THAT'S technical art 👍 👏! And the short rear fender makes it a Bobber 😎!
A truly magnificent piece of a steam motorcycle, better than this, it is difficult to do by a private person. The engine itself that is on top is a work of art of the very rare kind, you must have great insight to make something like this.
Astounding! Built like a watch.
Yes that i call a engine
Thank you for this wonderfull Video
Were else than in Britain can be such a engine
Greetings Frank Galetzka
Very cool! He did a great job and I am sure it's fun to take a spin around town!
That is absolutely magnificent!!!!!
That is flipping amazing. What a build!
The bike's smokin' ! Literally.
It helps letting of some steam :p
Steam powered bike with a smoke stack right in front of your plain of view. Pure genius, couldn't think of a safer bike.
Made me smile every time I watched it... YES, i watched it more than once 😂😉
Stunning.Thank you.
oh my god, what an amazing piece of engineering! Absolutely priceless!!
Fantastic! What a nice job all around. Looks great and what a blast to watch it all work.
nice video... more video of riding this bike..
Splendid.😄 Thank You.
Awesome steamer bike build
I see one of these in Jay Leno’s future.
Great work. Beautiful
I love the steam it puts out around bottom of bike making it look real dramatic
This thing is so bad ass it sends bad ass to the wood shed 👍👍 I love it. Absolute rolling art!
Then he drives it at the end to top it off. Great work and engineering.
The rear sprocket may be Nice If Paint Black. I like the rear drum. Probabily will be easy to change. Beautiful machine
a mechanical masterpiece ...extremely beautiful
Ransom in the garage , Steam driven motor cycle on the drive way this man has a lot of toys.
Wonderful story and incredible workmanship. That's a beautiful engine - would have been better to hear it than the backing track IMHO. Thanks for the video - lovely production despite the music.
That thing is so well thought out. Great build!
I wish to now how fast the top speed ist 🤔 really amazing...British People just have steam engins in there blood I think...just amazing
Slower than the steam-powered bicycle, but that wasn't coal-powered & it was very lightweight...
So about 30mph or so I would guess, due to the weight...
About 300mph in 3 sec at the drag strip
I sat through 18 minutes of a wonderful video only to hear the inevitable F***ING MUSIC PLAYING OVER THE TOP OF THE ENGINE SOUNDS. Well done
Gorgeous piece of engineering!
Fred Dibnah meets Alan Millyard!
Fred would sure be proud. I can hear his excitement now
I wonder if they knew each other or knew of each other?both simply brilliant.
A perfect summary
MrDerbee; I just came here to say something similar. Imagine the creation those two could come up with. Cheers!
Awesome video. Amazing detail and display of the "art" Yeah, it would have been nice to see more footage of it operating.
Beautiful machine, truly a steam punk motorcycle.
Brilliant machine. Hope to see it at Stormin 2021!
Wooow what a incredible bike made HATS off to you sir 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻🛴🛵🛴🛵
Simply wonderful. What a great project.
So enjoyed, lovely bike.
Fantastic! Congrats!
so beautifull ! Thank you ! every kid should have build a steam machine ? to learn how the world works ? =)
where are teacher like you ?
inspiring and motivating =)
A real Art Work !
What a marvellous device
He should put it on a dyno to see how much power his creation makes, and a graph of the powerband relative to rpm. I'm sure he would love to know this.
With the price of gas everyone might be driving with steam engines . This is so many levels above cool.
Wauw what a beautyful machine 👌🤙
That’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen
