Perfect Curved Joints No Sanding Wood Turning

- Here I show how I cut curved and twisted segments free hand on the band saw and get perfect glue joints.
After making a similar turning where I used my CNC I promised to show how I make them without any special machine or fixtures. No band saw sled or wedgie sled and no fixtures or jigs needed. Make the segment joint the way you choose.

Thank you Gord! The thing of it is this is really easy and I was so excited about sharing this with everyone. I learned this trick cutting staves on an angle for large patterns. It was a way of saving material.

If you started with a light and a dark 9" wide x 8 long boards, marked line up marks on both, hot glued or double sided tape the ends then cut the wavy lines through the set, alternate top and bottom strips, glue together with the start and stop strips, you could create 2 full 8" blanks.

Makes me think about all the scrap I have and another way to use them
For sure and they do not have to be just 2 types of wood. They could all be different. It just helps if they are all the same thickness. This is why I never toss out left over pieces of wood.

That's genius, Gary. When I was watching first method with CNC and You said You will show how to do it on bandsaw I thought You will use a copying jig for curved shapes but You totally surprised me. Never could figure out this way and I think is much better than jigs. As You showed we can get every shape which we can imagine. Great work my friend 👍👌 Thank You 🤝😀

I saw someone make a box with wavy edged sides made up like this. I wanted to make one but lost the link. This has inspired me to make a bowl or three as well as the boxes.

Good evening, Gary. Excellent, start to finish. I am excited to make a few. I have a lot of flat stock saved for some kind of project and now we have the project. Unlimited possibilities. The tip on leaving the glue-up in two halves and cutting on the bandsaw is perfect.
Thank you very much Ray. It is a good place to use some left over pieces for sure.
If you do glue them in halves I would maybe glue one half up then glue the other against it but with no glue at the joint. This will assure you that the 2 halves will fit together. Or you could glue it all at once with no glue at the center joint. Or even a piece of wax paper.

We have been working on some wormy chestnut 🌰 cabinets at work, I’ve been thinking about glueing up a chop block chunk to turn something out of for the past month, only thing I know the glue is gonna go all through the worm 🐛 holes and dunno how it will look, would be good if they were a black wood glue them the glue wouldn’t look so bad. I think there is black ca glue but don’t know about titebond wood glue.
@@kimseyjustkimsey5256 well funny you you are talking about black glue. In my last video at about the 20:00 mark I talked about dying wood glue black. What I used was the original Titebond. Perhaps a white glue might take less dye but it did work and it might fill those worm holes.

That is a great idea for my next few bowls. I think using a sharp bandsaw blade will give the smoothest cut for the best glue-up. Very good explanation of your technique. The variety of designs is endless.
Thank you Paul and for sure a sharp blade helps. I had a 10 tooth that I was going to use but tested a cut with the 8 and it cut very nicely.
