This is one of the most practical reviews I've heard. I love your outlook on the battery size/range. Day to day you DO NOT need a long range car (unless your day to day is driving hundreds of miles). The only time it's beneficial is your occasional (for most people 1 time a year) road trip.
As a Handy Man. I am happy for the "Frunk" because I have had my tools getting stolen many times. This is just awsome!!! Imagine driving a pickup truck around and not having to worry about gas.
You'll absolutely love the frunk for that reason. It's a pretty nice feeling going from complaining about gas prices all the time to more or less forgetting what gas actually costs at any one time.
To anyone wondering about where I got my cost numbers. I drive over 20,000 miles a year. My old truck got about 15mpg. Gas here is currently 4.50$ but was as high as 6$ a gallon. That is 6,000$ a year at 4.50$. With the lightning I average 2.4 miles per kWh. My electricity is about 19 cents per kWh (it’s actually a lot lower since I have solar but I’ll just use this for comparisons sake). That works out to 1,583 a year in electricity. Add another 150 to factor in charging losses. So 6,000$ with my old truck vs 1,733$ with the lightning (not factoring in my solar). This is just my situation. Your case will vary. Hope this helps.
Also I live in RI and there are tons of free charging stations here. So if you go shopping anywhere here you can plug in 1 hr later you have 25 or more miles added for free
Nice honest video. Being a lightning owner I believe you were spot on with nearly everything you've said here. And the only people that will disagree are diehard ICE owners.
Thank you. One guy in the comments seems to think everything I said was a lie to push my agenda. Haha. Not even going to trouble myself with responding to such nonsense.
It is always a pleasure getting a video. You were indeed fortunate to get the introductory price, but you did take the time to register when revealed. Good job.
Very interesting video Kurt! This is the second video I've seen of yours and I really appreciate your candor! I also have a 2023 Pro SR. I ordered back in 2021. I also got mine at the original MSRP. I also live in SoCal, however I ordered my truck from a dealer in Texas and I drove it back to SoCal over a three day period with my son - who slept while I drove! It was 1700 miles and I had to charge about 10 to 12 times average time was 35 minutes per charge. Wasn't bad at all. Most of the chargers coming from central Texas are located at Walmart. So we had opportunity to get out and stretch get something to eat or just sit in the truck and sleep. The most challenging part is when we arrived in New Mexico, where there isn't as many chargers... So we hard to plan accordingly. Charger cost utilizing Electrify America chargers for 1700 miles was somewhere around $160 for the whole trip! You just can't beat it! I took delivery of my truck in January 2023 a few weeks after you,and driven over 7000 miles. I'm very pleased with the vehicle. it's been great so far. I don't do any really work with the truck... it's just a pleasure vehicle pretty much. Since I've been back in SoCal driven up to LA, the OC, around the Inland Empire. I do use the DC fast chargers when I think I need to, but it's just not a big deal for me. I'm never owned the full-size full-size truck. I've had several small size trucks. So far been very surprised with the comfort and performance of this vehicle. Thanks for your detailed video.
Nice 3 month review! My father (retired) got his Pro in December and we live in the mountains (Pollock Pines and Tahoe), so he has yet to see his true mileage in warmer weather. In the winter around 175-190 mileage for his Pro. My Lariat ER, going back and forth to his house, in the mountains during summer was getting 320 miles. The Pro price has raised a lot!

Hi Kurt. Great review on the Lightning! Really practical info that you provide and information that a lot of prospective buyers like myself are looking for.
I had a quick question for you on the charger you have. Do you have a RPMGarage email that I can email you? I'm in SoCal as well (OC) so I thought that perhaps I could bounce a question off of you.
The Lightning is awesome. I have the exact same truck and I absolutely love it. I put bilstein 6112 on the front which lifted it about 2”. It made the ride more confident. I also put some 10 ply 275/70 R18 Fuel bead lock style wheels on and oh man this truck looks sweet.
@@007CMoore a little. The tires are a ten ply so they require higher air pressure which is less rolling resistance so maybe that’s why it was not much less. I went from 240 miles to 230.
I have a Bolt and have never gone to a DC fast charge (3 yrs) because like you I just charge at home. The range anxiety thing is just ridiculous (maybe for apartment dwellers - until that catches up). Nice video review - if you do want to make some $ with this, just script it a bit to shorten it, but you've got a great screen presence and sincerity.
Regenerative braking is the only way to go. It came naturally with me because I've owned several prius and just got in a habit driving that way. Of course this is much more aggressive Regenerative braking which I love because I never use my brakes.
noticed a 2mpg gain with my tonneau, there have been multiple tests showing it helps regardless of the tests that say otherwise. Those who say they dont work dont understand how air friction and aerodynamics work, it blocks the vortex drag from the tailgate, the cab doesnt take away all that air.
From everything I have seen the airflow behind a pickup creates a high pressure zone that forces incoming air over the tailgate. I track my mileage religiously and have put covers on all my trucks. Never noticed any measurable difference with any of them that couldn't be considered anything more than a rounding error. That's just my experience though. 2mpg is a great improvement! I'm jealous of those results.
Keep in mind, the wind direction and speed in combination with truck speed could change the test results. If the it is a 90 degree cross wind, round trip test will not fix the issue.
I went through my stock 21” Pirelli Scorpion tires after 9k mi and decided to sell those rims on ebay since they were the only tire for that rim size on an R1-T and bought a aftermarket 20” rim and Nitto grappler recons and have been happy with new set up. Someone at tire shop said Tesla owners are also surprised at how quickly tires wear on EVs Lots of 0-60s from being a new owner didn’t help my tires either. My range did drop about 15% with off road tires as well.
9k miles yikes that’s bad. (800 Hp rivian so not totally surprised. I just crossed the 9k mark on the lightning. They still look pretty good. Hopefully I can hit 30k.
Just picked one up for my wife lastnight. She does a lot of small commutes each day, so I'm excited to know she will be passing by Gas stations, rather than pulling in.
As big as it is, it does great in town and on back roads. You don’t get as much aero dynamic hit and regen takes care of the lights. If she drives it gently, she can get over 3.5 miles/KWh.
You definitely get better range than I do with my platinum but I definitely don't have any complaints. Much lower in colder weather, but so do ICE vehicles. People just don't notice it the way electric vehicle owners do.
Unless u have people sitting in the middle of the back seat u can remove the middle headrest and get nicer rear view mirror visibility. Also the headrest fits perfect above where the jack goes.
Thanks for all the videos on the Lightning! I have 2 questions 1-What percentage do you charge to every day? 80-90-100? 2-Do you plan on keeping the truck for awhile? Do you worry about resale value of the Lighting in a couple of years?
I charge to 80% typically. Ford recommends 90% but I do 80 to be extra nice to the battery. If I know I’m going somewhere far i bumpy it up to 100%. I’m honestly not sure how long I’ll keep it. I’m all about value and if something else comes out that is a killer deal (such as 300 mile range for 50k) I might jump on it. If not though I’m happy to keep this for a long time. I got this for such a good price I’m not too worried about resale just yet. Not sure what the future holds.
I’m July 2021, I made a Reservation for a Ford F-150 Lighting Back then the MSRP for the PRO version was 40k, on March 30 2023 I finally got the email from Ford to complete my reservation by choosing the version that I was interested on, just to find out that the PRO version is not even available, and it’s MSRP is now 60k I felt like I was gonna throw up I better go get a Tesla or a VW ID.4 instead
That stinks, I found a demo 22 pro on the last day of its 180 day hold at a dealer. 1 day before my states 4k rebate was over so i feel like i definitely got a unicorn. Sorry form your dilemma
I have a gas f150 and my range is 680 miles. 😂 jk jk great video man. I’ve always been interested in the lightnings. I wish I could get one but I drive way too far all the time. When the range gets into the 500s I could consider one
Appreciate the review. Do you ever really need the app? If so, what for and when do you use it most? I've heard it was pretty bad/unreliable as in slow and takes a long time to load and use at times. Is that your experience? Maybe an over the air update fixed that by now hopefully? Thanks!
The app is not required but it’s very nice to have. I use it to check the battery state of charge and charging status as well as to set the precondition time and remote start the truck. When I first got the truck the app was really bad. I think it had to do with the modem issue a lot of owners were experiencing. However after an update a couple months ago the app has worked great since. It’s not as good as the Tesla app but I’d say it’s pretty good and new updates are slowly adding features.
Even if you could, a typical generator like Honda EM6500SX can give you 5.5 KW or 12 mile an hour for 10 hours. At 70 mph, a Lightning Pro with 100% SOC will run out in a little over 3 hours. So this will extend its 240 mile range to 276 miles. And once you get there, theoretically you should not be able to go faster than 12 miles an hour. Alternatively, you can get that 36 miles in DCFC charging station in 7 minutes. Is it really worth it? If you are boondocking away from civilization and can run it when you are not sleeping and away from the truck, that extra range could help otherwise it does not make a big enough difference. I am not sure how Chevy Volt does it but if you can duplicate that, then you may have something.
Towing is fine with these trucks as long as it's not for long distance. But that's all I bought my lightning to be used for. Locally I've never had a range problem. And costs per mile is like night and day compared to my old 2014 F150. And it does everything that it would do only much cheaper. Maybe not a real luxury car ride, but I was used to my prius and my F150 and my lightning rides like a luxury car to me.
I believe it's fords software that reduces the available power from the battery as it gets lower, because that's not normal for lithium batteries. They have full power right up until the BMS turns it off. Also my 131 kwh battery is actually a 145 kwh battery. I'm not sure what the standard battery actually is but another thing ford has done not giving the customer the full kwh available.
In a blackout unfortunately no. You would need a battery to soak up excess output and dispense energy as needed. The grid tied system has a safety switch that automatically shuts the system down in a blackout. It does that to protect line workers who may be trying to repair the system when it goes down.
Have you used it under load.....towing. And how would it fair if it was used as a work truck on more remote sites. Time lost to charging....etc. Could it actually be used as a work truck?
I have. Power and stability are non issues. Range does go down. With my standard range I was getting about 150 to 170 miles of range towing my 4000lb boat at highway speed. I’ve had a couple 300 mile work days. Needed to charge for about 10 to 15 minutes at dc fast chargers to get enough juice to make it home. Not going to work for everyone. The cost savings makes it worth it for me.
Sold out for 2023 sadly. Some people seem to be getting lucky and are finding them on dealer lots but they are extremely rare. XLTs are probably about a 3 month wait if I had to guess.
@@IWBVS ya it was too good to pass up. As far as I understand the msrp is set when the window sticker is generated. So if you can find a pro that was made before the more recent price hikes you could theoretically find a pro for 40, 47, 53, or 60k (those were all the prices a pro has been set at in the last 9 months). Then you have the dealer to deal with which is a whole other can of worms.
It’s amazing that so many people buy this $80,000+ truck as a status symbol. I have a 2019 5.3 V8 pickup truck to pull my boat and 6000 pound travel trailer. I didn’t buy an ultra expensive truck as a status symbol, but only to pull heavy stuff. My 2019 Silverado cost me $35,000. The difference between $80,000 and $35,000 can buy a lot of gas!! Plus a fill-up of my 25 gallon gas tank takes 10 minutes!!
I bought mine as a status symbol. I really like looking down on people, like you...peasants that cut my grass, do handywork, etc. Let's be honest you couldn't afford this truck.....off to my country club life!
I was lucky enough too, but my price was higher. $51k out the door with only pro power onboard upgraded. 🤷🏻♂️ but it does everything I need. Thank you for sharing your feedback. On time 10:11 this video shows 0-60 @ 3.9 seconds th-cam.com/video/EHGVHtoC0-A/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for a great video! Please make more when you're able............ daily driving experiences, any problems and practical charging experiences. I've owned my 2022 Powerboost Lariat now for a year and we love it, best truck we've owned for sure. I leased it for 2 yrs with the intention of leasing a Lightning to replace it when the Powerboost lease is up. I'm starting to have second thoughts now about the Lightning. Not because I no longer like the Lightning. I love that thing. More to do with the fact that I don't think there's enough range for me and enough charging stations yet up here in rural Ontario. The other reason has to do with the reduced towing range when towing a 6000 lb RV and the practical problem of charging the truck with a 25' long RV attached. I tow the RV about 6 or 7 times a year with one way trips up to 400 miles away. I have another 8 months to decide whether to lease the Lightning or lease another Powerboost......
Thanks for the kind words. I'll do what I can. Your situation is likely a bit much for the lightning. It can be done, but those 6 or 7 trips a year with the camper will likely be a pain in the butt. I say enjoy the powerboost for now but keep an eye on what's coming in the pipeline. I think the next generation of EV trucks will be a major step forward in, range, towing, convenience, etc..
Yes I did. There was a 7k private offer and another 5k for price protection. The private offer was no problem however my dealer was very confused about the price protection. It took hours of back and forth before they finally caved and honored the price protection. Technically you should pay the price that was displayed when you ordered (minus the private if that applies to you).
@@KurtsRPMGarage yes. I ordered at 46k in August 11 . But the dealer just wants to apply the 7 k at the current price , they say there’s no price protection since I already got the 7k offer . I extended the reservation cause not enough pros before I ordered. I knew they could take it off on top of the price protection. They applied the 7k private offer at the same time?
@@mrniceguystocktalk9648 Yes I was in the same group that extended. That is exactly what the problem I had initially but the other way around. I got the 7k no problem but had to go back and forth with them over the 5k. Go on the F150Lightning Forum and search for "price protection". There were lots of threads about the subject and people posted lots of documents you can show your dealer to press your point. Goodluck.
@@KurtsRPMGarage thank you. You know what it would be a good idea if you do a video explaining the process you went through buying your Pro . I’ll do one once I get the truck
@mrniceguystocktalk9648 My dealer was great - price protection down to when I ordered. They were unaware of the $7K private offer initially, but they got it worked out with the "area manager" after seeing that I clearly qualified.
Yes but it ended up being temporary. It was sewn on so it was secure but I didn’t end up liking it. Ended up swapping the entire steering wheel for a leather unit. I have another video on my channel about that.
I was interested before the price has shot up . Not ready to buy anyways so I am doing my homework , see where the batteries are in 3-4 years when I am more ready to buy another truck,
Don't blame you one bit. Those price increases are out of control. It will be interesting to see where these EV trucks are at in a couple years. Feels like some major innovations are just around the corner.
Does it eat tires quickly? Obviously if you drive like a psycho it will eat them up, but you seem to drive like a sane person. Haha. I am getting one Monday.
Like you said it depends on the driver. I’m at about 20,000 miles and the tires still look pretty good. I should easily get 50,000+ out of the oem tires.
if it had 175 miles towing a 14,000 pound trailer it be perfect the longest tow trip if ever done one way was 150 miles done it twice in 15 years but i several times a year drive 70 miles one way towing a loaded trailer
I'd say keep an eye on these upcoming 400 to 500 miles ev trucks. They very likely will cover your requirement. The lightning is obviously not capable of towing that far or that heavy to begin with, even the extended range model.
The motorized frunk is another example of over engineering that's not done in a good way. Many cars have trunks and hatches that are the same. No reason it can't be manually operated, especially on a work truck.
Just don't tow a trailer. Their trash for doing that. You know what dealers say when you sign and drive. SUCKER! I know my friend works at a dealership and they all drive gas cars and trucks.

Listening to you it seems like finding the optimal of bigger battery longer charging time vs smaller battery shorter charging time.
But did your 2014 truck cost you $80,000+?
Thank you.
How hot can it get in the Frunk?
Great video
I couldn’t deal with the trim around the headlights being a different color white than the truck, which is a great color btw.
Wait so the Pros now come with leather wrapped steering wheels and heated seats? Color match the bumpers and it’s perfect
Heated seats yes, leather steering wheel no. I swapped out the steering wheel to the leather unit.
@@KurtsRPMGarage was the leather one hard to find?
@@leviconner no it wasn’t. Check out my other video on how to swap the wheel. I have a link in the bio on where to get the wheel.
Can you supply power to a house with a grid tied solar system? So your panels are not useless during a blackout!
In a blackout unfortunately no. You would need a battery to soak up excess output and dispense energy as needed. The grid tied system has a safety switch that automatically shuts the system down in a blackout. It does that to protect line workers who may be trying to repair the system when it goes down.
@Kurt'sRPMGarage a grid tied system can also use battery backup with the right setup.
The cost savings makes it worth it for me.
great response....thanks@@KurtsRPMGarage
What's the wait on a 2023 pro these days? Still a demand for them?
Sold out for 2023 sadly. Some people seem to be getting lucky and are finding them on dealer lots but they are extremely rare. XLTs are probably about a 3 month wait if I had to guess.
@@KurtsRPMGarage 51k out the door sounds like a steal. They are listed for 60-64k now aren't they? Plus tax and fees
Kurt do you have a video of your charger setup?
Do You think you could barges with the dealer to get it under fifty? They
Definitely. There are tons of deals out there. If your local dealer won’t budge then try another until you find one that will play ball.
Kurt, can you share the hyperlink for your running boards? Thx🙏🏻

I am getting moisture in the back lightning bar, dealer will replace it soon
I was lucky enough too, but my price was higher.
$51k out the door with only pro power onboard upgraded. 🤷🏻♂️ but it does everything I need.
Thank you for sharing your feedback.

Try it in Sport mode, traction control off and slightly preload the throttle.
the cost benefits only assume your utility will continue to purchase your electricity
@@KurtsRPMGarage I appreciate your input, it's real life and valuable to me. Thanks!
Did you get the private 7k offer taken off the 46k ? Or the current price when it was built?
Aftermarket steering wheel cover?
Yes but it ended up being temporary. It was sewn on so it was secure but I didn’t end up liking it. Ended up swapping the entire steering wheel for a leather unit. I have another video on my channel about that.
Best review I've watched
Did I see heated seats on your pro ?!
Yessir. Standard on all lightnings starting in 2023.
Ya 18”s all day I have the same rims and love them. I just like the design better than the 20”.
I am curious, what kind of work do you do?
I’m a geologist that works in the construction sector.
Sorry if I missed it but can you confirm your awevage mileage
I typically do between 20,000 to 25,000 miles per year.
Are you getting a Cyver truck??
If it’s really good I’ll consider it. Although my wife hates it and thinks it’s the ugliest vehicle ever conceived.
Well the pro now costs like almost $52k without destination.
Good to see Baker Mayfield doing Ford reviews now
Haha first time I've heard that but I can see it.
GET A MICROPHONE !
Seriously who needs a town car for $80,000? Oh and how about charging time vs. filling up with a tank of gas? EWWWWWWWWWWW
I paid 51k before rebates, drive it over 25,000 miles a year, and it fills while I sleep. 🤷♂️
sounds like a commercial for ford lightning... which i will never buy
Who cares about 0 to 60 . How long will it run.
Useful video, can I have your facebook?😃
Don't have a facebook other than my personal one. You can find me on instagram under the same username.
