The story stuck with me; a Gazan mother who survived the bombardement and transferred to Egypt from Rafah border for medical treatment, tells a story to one of the UN members that she lost her all three children in the bombardement. She goes; Under the rubble one of her kids was screaming in pain, begging her to help stop the pain, daughters legs were shuttered, another one crying she’s stuck to her chest. A mother describes that she had to bear the her childrens crying voice and then to silence because they were slowly dying. She couldn’t move, she couldn’t help, she could do nothing. So eventually she’s rescued. She’s the only survivor. Yes she’s alive but she sure she’s dead inside. she says she hears her kids crying voice every day. There, I had to share the story I heard. I had to give the context of how horrific situation people of Gaza are going through to those who still defends Israel to this day.
We very sorry it’s happening but the same way it’s happening in Ukraine for the 2 years non stop I can’t hear from you or like you or UN any condemnation Hippocrates all of you! Leave the Israel alone they didn’t start the war! Stop crying and get hostages out!!!
Thank you for sharing. Indeed heart breaking. Unfortunately there are 1000s of stories like this (in Gaza from just the past 6 months) each of which rival horror stories from holocaust
Try the story of the modern history of Israel sticks with me. Against all odds, fresh from the camps in Europe, surrounded by hundreds of millions of fanatical enemies that hate them to the core, attacked by 5 armies on the day they became a nation, decades of invasions and terror attacks. They somehow won and became powerful yet kind. They let their defeated enemy refugees of these invasions stay only to have them create a false narrative that Israel was always a strong oppressor apartheid state for 80 years, ignoring the struggle Israel made to survive and become strong after nearly being wiped off the planet.

Elham Farah, 84, had been sheltering inside the church for some time. On Sunday night she stepped outside the building to see if her house was still standing. She was shot in the leg and fell to the ground. People in the church were unable to rescue her, as each time they went out they came under fire. She lay in the street all night. On Monday morning it was reported that an Israeli tank ran over her body. Elham was a popular music teacher in Gaza, described as 'loving, calm and a true educator.' A devout Christian, she came from a strong Gazan Christian family. Her father Hanna Farah, was a well known Palestinian poet. She loved to travel to the West Bank when permission was given to the Gazan Christians to celebrate Christmas and Easter with the church there.

It is flabbergasting how a hypocrite who wouldn’t dare open his mouth in any country ,outside of the west, where he entertains such as the UAE since you can’t criticize the government or the monarchy - has the audacity to portray Israel as the oppressor! As a female who was born and raised in the same country as this comedian ( far from a truth teller much less an intellectual) I’m appalled by how much he brushes of the agenda of the entire Arab and Muslim world against Israel. The only reason Egypt agreed to sign a peace treaty with Israel was because it failed to eradicate it ( the original goal of the wars) or even win one battle against it. Israel has been fighting for its own survival since its inception thanks to its venal and openly anti semiotic neighbors. Despite all of that it succeeded to thrive and nurture a free society for its citizens Jews, Druz, Christians and Muslims in the only democracy in the Middle East. That doesn’t make it perfect. No nation is . However, it is worth mentioning that no female lives freely, with equal rights and with dignity in this region aside from the Israeli population. There has never been one peaceful movement or organization in a single Arab country via a vis the so called Palestinian cause.

As a dedicated fan of Bassem Youssef since his days in Egypt, I can attest to his unparalleled humor in Arabic, though he's gradually mastering English comedy. Following the military coup, he was misunderstood and criticized from all sides: Islamist supporters accused him of allying with the military, while the military labeled him a traitor. However, Bassem's comedy goes beyond political divisions; he is enlightened, mocking all sides with equal fervor. In the sole episode aired amidst the tense post-coup atmosphere, he brilliantly joked about his own fears, delivering what I believe to be one of the greatest jokes in the history of television. Despite having watched countless hours of comedy legends like George Carlin, Dave Chappelle, and Louis C.K., that episode stands out as a unique masterpiece of comedic artistry. The English-speaking world has yet to fully witness Bassem's comedic talent; he has only recently begun to grasp comedy in English. I am confident that in the future, he will reach the same level of acclaim.

As an Egyptian, I can attest to all that as well. I do think however that we in the arab world, starting with Egypt,, are yet to fully understand him, even more so than western audiences. That's how misunderstood he is here, and in the whole arab world. The reply in arabic above mine is an example of exactly that,, and it's unfortunately much worse than it seems. If he does rise to some sort of prominence, I'm sure there will be a lot of misunderstanding going around, from all sides.

As far as I am aware, Bassem is the first Egyptian ever to be hosted by Lex, and what an introduction to this hilariously obnoxious breed of humans. Over their long history, Egyptians have fought injustice and oppression with laughing and sarcasm over their own misery and plights. 40 years ago I took a summer youth employment program which had us enroll and take six weeks of basic, militia training. In my platoon, there was an Iraqi, and an Iranian. Both were name Rafi, althoughbit was pronounced differently in each case. At the start, both hated each other and would not talk to one another. After a couple of weeks, being the only "brown" guys, they began to bond. Several weeks later, they were inseperable, and we would overhear them telling stories about how many similarities their families had regarding beliefs, customs, meals, occupations, etc, at which point they both realized just how ridiculous their "learned" behaviors and hatreds actually were. If you could get the youth to talk and hang out, free of the influence of media, family, school, and outside influences, they could change all this hatred.
As an Israeli I can say that that is the main problem with the yonger generation of both Israelies and Palestinians, after the second intifada the Israeli goverment built the separation wall that seperated us, before the borders were open and we saw more one another and it is harder to hate someone you know, and many of us Israelies are arab jews and have a lot od similarities and look very much a like... @@Bettybaminjerusalem thank you so much for your reply. I had a friend years ago, from Israel, that said he worked daily with Palestinians at his job, and after a few months of working together, most Palestinians and Israelis, whether of Jewish or Arabic descent, would become friends, cohorts, oft times lovers, and it was simply that they discovered just how many similarities they (and all humans) have and how few differences. We all seek love, friendship, happiness, meaning in our lives, comfort (if possible) security for our families, and an ability to raise our children to become productive, contributing members of society and community. We all want to better our world for the future. When people boil things down to the basics, like children do, we ALL get along because we all are the same. It's when you bring in external things like ideology, religion, power, politics, and greed that things turn to hatred, envy, and a desire to hurt. Again, thank you so much for your feedback. Do you think people thought it is possible to deradiculize Japan, and to be in good relations with the US?, nobody thought it's possible but it happened. Did Israelies in the 50's though there will be cold peace with Eygept, Jordan, Turkey, UAE etc.? , we have to keep beliving and hoping for the best.
@@Bettybaminjerusalem sorry to say that but you are naive. The reasons for this happening is not a separating “wall” as another commentator said, or “impassion” but the inevitable result of societal “evolution”. I could make an argument of the “religious war” and how the situation worsened gradually since early 90s when Gazans were allowed in israel to work, travel with no check posts, special permits and the situation was under *control* (what they call “the occupation” today!) as IDF would routinely eradicate the “radicalized” - what they would call “kidnap” today! - but that allowed Gazans to earn their living honorably, not to live on UN handouts, full access (albeit perhaps not perfect but reasonably established) to health and other services. Ever since Oslo and IDF/insraeli administration leaving the area, the radicals under corrupt PLO (themselves terrorists with history of coup attempts in Jordan and Lebanon) escalated the situation (suicidal bombers on Israeli streets) and the border were sealed. Now you have a hungry mob fed with propaganda blaming israel for everything. This entire argument of “decadent powerful society slowly letting go of the power and giving in to the barbarians” is supported by ancient history lessons and modern examples of regional conflicts. There is no “vacuum of power”, it does not exists in nature
What gives me hope? People like Lex, those who are strong enough to be compassion towards others and who don't fear having conversations. People with real curiosity who are willing to listen despite anything. As an Egyptian myself that was a very fascinating conversation. Listening to Bassem is like breathing fresh air after very long time under the ground. I'm not particularly a fan of him nor I agree 100% with everything he says, but just how open he is to discuss and acknowledge the other perspectives is refreshing to listen to. That's something we surely lack in the Middle East.
Lex is the definition of the center. Dude refuses to give up his actual political leanings. And, if any of his opinions are clear, it is that: - He promotes Free Speech - He promotes diversity of thought - He promotes discussion - He promotes debate This was what the Ancient Greeks knew was the foundation of Democracy. All ideas were promoted, and disagreement was encouraged. That is how they built the greatest generation of thinkers to this day, and it all happened in just a few hundred years. And, judging by the view count, long form discussions are winning out over the 15 second mindless garbage that is everywhere else. I am not sure what this means for the next generation, but all I know is what Lex is doing is invaluable to the world. “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” - More of this today would be good.
Anyone who hates Lex needs to reevaluate things. You are just making an anti-free speech argument, because all Lex does is platform opinions. OPINIONS ARE GOOD!
@@triplea7536 Sure, but opposition to those ideas exist on both sides, so I would say they are neutral in that sense. Censorship is not exclusive to left and right governments.
He’s a true con artists. A lie every 20 seconds. He uses his comedian statues to make fun of actual facts, like Hamas using their own people as human shields, like Hamas beheading Israeli babies, like Hamas put Israeli babies in microwaves (read the forensic reports), like Hamas mass rape of even 12 yo girls during their massacre. You can freely read all that and more (TH-cam will ban if I’ll write more violent descriptions, so just look online). Bassem tries to downplay all these by pretending this is stand up material. A true con artist.
Eh, I have my issues with Bassem. On Piers Morgan he said that ethnic cleansing is intrinsic to Western culture, which is a racist statement. Imperialism, Ethnic cleansing, slavery, those things are part of HUMANITY, for better or for worse, and to claim one group of people is specifically Imperialist over others, is racism. Saying Arabs are more Imperialist than other races would be racist, same with Biased Bassem saying it about Westerners. He has one set of standards for white people and another for Arabs. He calls everyone who disagrees with him too much a racist, when in reality, he is projecting and is the racist himself. The reason people don't see this, the reason they really like him, is because he is charismatic, funny, and smart about the way he talks. But if you play the Devil's Advocate and have skepticism about all humans like I do, you pick up on racist statements from him every now and again like the one I told you about in the above paragraph. Just be careful trusting charismatic people like this, they are smart so they are right about many things, but then they slip in double standards where they call everyone who disagrees with them a racist pre-emptively, and then nobody can call them out on their actual racism. This is what Bassem does, he pre-emptively calls someone a racist with little reason to make it so nobody can accuse him of racism when he says stuff like racism, Imperialism, and ethnic cleansing is all specific to white people and Westerners. That IS racist. Also, in this video he said something that was misinformation as well, he blamed the US for millions of Native American deaths, when in reality, the death count across 100+ years was closer to around 100,000. The vast majority died from Smallpox before the USA even existed, millions did die to the Spanish Empire, but most died to Smallpox accidental spread, and most were already immune by the time the USA existed. The population of Natives in North America was very small and sparse, it would have been mathematically impossible for the USA to kill millions like Bassem and many others falsely claim. Think like a skeptic, that's my advice, as the truth is not always what charismatic people like Bassem present it as.
That's the 1st time in my life to watch a 3 hour interview without feeling bored, Bassem is a great story teller and 1st time seeing Lex and by far the best interviewer ever, he gives all the space to the guest to speak his mind and ideas without judgment or interruption with a strange great sense of humor❤❤ Loved it ❤️❤️
It is sad that people don't realize that calm conversations like this even from those with different perspectives are the most important. I see comments complaining about Lex and I have two points. You don't know his actual perspective as he often just challenges perspectives. Two, even if he disagrees people need to talk just like this. Thank both of you for this.
I want to encourage high school students to do stand up comedy because nothing builds up your self awareness more than standing up trying to entertain the crowds
Hearing Bassem speak his second language, English, so fluently inspires me as I learn my 4th language, Arabic. I can't wait to speak even broken Arabic. 😅
Lol, for Arabic as being so diverse, I can attest to this even as an American. I was friendly with a Palestinian guy in Asia who had a restaurant with cooks, and one of his cooks was Moroccan, and I got a call from the Palestinian guy saying, "Come down and talk to this chef I got from Morocco. He'll make you a tagine, but he's super lonely and can't talk to anyone," 'cause he couldn't speak the local language or English, and the Palestinian guy said, yeah, his Arabic communication with the other Arabs in the kitchen is not easy. Well, I studied in France and speak French fluently, and given Morocco's history, he could speak French, and we sat and had a talk, and he just had so much to talk about, it was like a relief valve of months of him basically isolated in this foreign country. He was so happy just to have a conversation for a while (and he was a good chef, haha).
@@mohmedhassan6875 It's not a weird comment, all he's saying is that it's good and all that you have a very nice arab friend but that doesn't prove much in face of an entire population with a certain culture. I also have good arab friends here in Canada, but it is purely anecdotal evidence. Sure we can't say that all arabs are "evil", that is wrong, but we can't completely negate the existance of a culture.
@@MattMajcan @residentgrey It's true that recent events can stir up patriotic feelings. Iranians are definitely proud of their country's resilience. However, it's important to consider different viewpoints within Iran. The strike on the Damascus embassy was seen as an attack on Iranian soil, and the counterattack a form of retaliation. This might make some Iranians feel more supportive of the regime right now. But there are many Iranians, myself included, who disagree with the regime's policies. We can love our country and be critical of its leadership.
I deeply advise you should complement with the part of history he neglects to mention. Over 1 Million Arabic Jews fled Egypt, Iraq, Morocco, Libya etc. and many others died before and after 1948. Their descendants constitute 50% of Israeli population and definitely deserve a state more than the ex Egyptians, Jordanians and Syrians that for the last 30-60 years define themselves as Palestinians

I remember how he was criticizing Muslim brotherhood and they way the were labeling their opponents as worthless creatures comparing them with how the west (including USA) in the 20th, 30th were mocking the Jews by drawing them as those greedy people with hooked nose and how this was beginning of what we all know about what happened to them later. He was one of the first in that turbulent time who was trying to change the narrative of the extreme Jews hatred and antisemitism in Egypt. Funny/sad that now he is being labeled as an antisemitic….
The result of years of propaganda to the masses is the loss of nuance and discussion , it's black or white, anger, torches and pitchforks. We return to the dark ages due to misinformation not due to lack of information and in our chaotic lives it's easy to surrender to a simplistic view blaming someone for all of your problems.
The stunning look on their faces when they ask Basssem what would you do if you were Israel " I would do exactly what Israel is doing, if you can get whatever I can without accountability " Absolute brilliance.
@@biochemistryproject Homie, he's not saying that's what he believes is right to do. He's saying what would be his most practical plan to achieve their agenda, which is what they're already doing. How can you possibly believe that's what he believes is right when you listen to the context and every other thing he says in the interview.
Definitely one of my most favourite episodes and interviews of all time. Bassem is such an insightful, knowledgeable and passionate individual who truly speaks truth to power in such an entertaining and intelligible way. I am perpetually in awe at how the world, rotten and evil as it may be in some of its largest and smallest corners, can produce such beautiful and amazing human beings. Thank you Lex for this incredible episode.
he's not impartial. He keeps normalizing and downplaying the cruelty and deliberate sociopathy of zionists. see great documentary here "The Occupation Of The American Mind " th-cam.com/video/X9w2eziEugI/w-d-xo.html
Bassem, you are a perfectionist, that is why you always feel not good enough. I had to become 65 years old to , at last, feel satisfied, even over satisfied with myself (as an immigrant child)
Very humbling, well there was a time when Amir Abdel Kader Al Jazairi in the 1860s, fought on behalf of Christians to protect them & choosing to stand for humanity.
idk, in my opinion, you should never take anyone's opinions or comments seriously when that person is incapable of giving you the counter narrative. if you ask this guy questions like, "if Hamas launches a terrorist attack on your country, what should you do?" Bassem is incapable of answering any question like this, he always gives sarcastic answers like "i would nuke Hamas' country". Listening to this guy, it sounds like he will never accept the fact that Palestinians also do bad things sometimes.
@@BanditBandito-db8tp bassem is a simple soul and corrupt. He never says... gaza is occupied from egypt and israel offered it to egypt and egypt refuses to take it back. they also refuse to let the palestinians get in so they can survive the bombings. This fact should not be mentioned. It is all about what jews do.... Egypt is innocent
i totally forgot Bassem was a salsa teacher in cairo, my roomie took lessons from him back in the early 2000. I never took lessons from Bassem nor did I ever dance with him, but we definitely did some social salsadancing in Cairo in general.
First time getting introduced to you Lex, loved how you handled the interview; loved how you were very open to Bassem's responses. Not a big fan of Bassem, but he's definitely worth a round of applause. Well done, Lex. Thank you!
it was annoying, he couldnt bring bassem to answer seriously. "what would you have done if you were israel?" "oh if i was full of hatred i would do what these murderers do" no alternatives to be found because he basically expects israel to dismantle itself after experiencing a genocide by Hamas
Lex and Bassem teach me the beauty of talking to person who you disagree with or you might hold grudges to them. We can face things we dont like and we will feel better coz we will know the person n the issue better afterwards and we no longer need to use a lot of mental energy about the person we dont like coz there is no longer a thing we dont like about them.

It will be the same in America if we don't get our shit together

When I was young we had many peace groups of Israelies and Palestinian from school, but now things are escalating and people from both sides are more radical and that is too bad. But we have to keep beliving and do whatever we can to bring peace between us.
Betty from Israel.
All the best wishes to you and yours. Stay happy, healthy, and safe.
@@Bettybaminjerusalemyou know who had tried really hard to make peace with "pleshtin"? Nova music festival. Left leaning villages that got hit on Oct7. How did that work for them exactly?
@@defaultgate I am with you belive me, my eyes are ipened ever since October 7th,and I am not naive, I have investegated the subject deeply from all possible angles and will start making videos, but at the same time I will allways belive peace is the only solution, it has to be with deradicalization of the Palestinians but you have to stay optimistic, (not blind of course but optimistic), when ww2 ended do you think any body thought that they deradicalized natzi Germany, but they did.

This is one of the most illuminating interviews I have ever seen. Thanks so much for being able to have this conversation!
Just reading comments give me hope for humanity thank you
Lex is the definition of the center. Dude refuses to give up his actual political leanings.
And, if any of his opinions are clear, it is that:
- He promotes Free Speech
- He promotes diversity of thought
- He promotes discussion
- He promotes debate
This was what the Ancient Greeks knew was the foundation of Democracy.
Totally agree. People that are against speech just want tyranny, but in their way. It's not left or right, but we'll pretend it is anyway.
@@triplea7536 Sure, but opposition to those ideas exist on both sides, so I would say they are neutral in that sense. Censorship is not exclusive to left and right governments.
He’s complicit in genocide, it’s a one sided conflict.
He’s an interviewer - his opinions and views are not the purpose of this podcast
Couldn't stop myself from listening the whole podcast in one go. Bassem is an interesting man.
Bassem 🙏!!
Hell yeah Theo!
Bassem is based.

It's true that recent events can stir up patriotic feelings.
