    This is glorious! This has been a dream of mine for years.
    As a single mom of five kids, two with a terminal disability that impacts their cognitive and physical functions, my divorce and escape from domestic violence has destroyed my credit and I remain on government assistance 7 years later. I hate it and I am trapped in the NJ system because I am limited on my income and limited on what I can save. Therefore, I rent a home for an exorbitant monthly price and no way out.
    A dream of smaller living was born of my rural upbringing and now that the kids are growing older, I dream of a place they can actually call home. The challenges of bringing this dream to fruition are significant in NJ because of all of the government regulations, but you have inspired me to dream, and I am grateful. Many blessings to you, from one homeschool homesteading mama to another!!

      Because of a lot of "Professionals" and an absolutely insipid bunch of local "Governmental" people, the "American Dream" has turned into a massive nightmare! No monster ever shown in a Horror Film has EVER been this bad! Housing Officials and such do their best to suck as much money out of you and I through their own nefarious ways, through codes and zones and such. A long time ago, it didn't used to be that way. Their ways are merely "Big Brother" telling us what to do. I'm so sick of it!

    One thing we're doing that has been a lot more useful than we thought... We put gutters on our house and redirect the rain water into a 2000 liter tank. Then we feed that through a berkey water filter and use it for drinking and cooking. It tastes better than any well or city water we've ever had. In the video it's not clear if you brought in city water or if you have a well. But having a second source of water would be nice either way. If you're on a well and the power goes out, you might not have water. And if you have municipal water, having another source can save you some money. You can also use the rain water for gardening, or if you want to have a source of water that you know is free from chemicals. You can use it to fill animal troughs or swimming pools also.

      Oh YES!!!!! In November we will begin our rain water harvesting adventure!! 😁😁😁😁😁

    • @brianlanning836
      @brianlanning836 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      @@BetterTogetherLife I'll never live without it again. Make sure you get a tank that isn't translucent. If it's translucent, like an IBC container, you'll have to paint it. You want it as dark as possible inside to fight algae. There's a device you should use, a first flush system. It's a vertical pipe with some kind of float or plastic bottle in it. When it first starts raining, the water fills that pipe first. The float then closes off that pipe so the water can run over it into the tank. You drill a tiny hole in the bottom of the pipe so that it slowly drains off when it's not raining. The idea is to throw away the first water that comes off the roof since that will be washing all the dirt or whatever off your roof. You should also put some window screen over the tank where the water enters. It will keep mosquitoes out and act as a filter for leaves and other things. You'll be amazed how much water you get. With a roof your size, an inch of rain should give you about 1000 gallons. I'm considering making an outdoor shower with a solar water heater fed by our tank.

      @Lemmiwinks We don't have any trees over our current house. So it's not an issue. There are a few gutter systems designed to collect water while shedding leaves and other things. Nothing will be perfect though. So I have a piece of window screen over the tank where the downspout ends.

    You guys have done a wonderful job. I love it. I feel like we have done everything backwards and everything happened that to prevented us moving forward with our homestead. We have 12 acres and we put our shed on it to convert. And everything and anything happened to prevent us from getting the work done. From illness to taking care of an ill parent to death to cancer and surgery and more death and more surgeries. We got to a point that we just said ok. After fighting for four years to get it done. We let go and took care of the real important things, for family. Things are better. We are sad for the lose of family members and praise God they are cancer free and doing well. I’m happy to say October 31st is my husband s last day at work after being a journeyman electrician for 30 yrs. he’s going back to school to learn a trade that he can make his own schedule. I see landscaping in our near future. And lots of improvement at our cabin. I love it when I look out over our land. It’s the most freeing feeling. I love the deer walking up by the back barn and playing peekaboo with our huskies. I have not laughed that hard in so long. And when it’s so hot you can’t take it anymore then we see our husky push through the back gate and run as fast as she could to jump into the pond. It’s like you are pushed to work as hard as your body will let you. And you think why am I doing this. Then you look up and see the most beautiful site all around you. And it’s all yours. I hope that someone will read this and understand that it’s not easy. Like when you still lived in the suburbs and were paying a thousand a month to get our land and cabin paid off but we did it. And how for two solid years we collected everything we could from habitat for humanity and goodwill and yard sale and the curb. And it’s all our and it looks great. I like it better than our big suburban home with all the showroom furniture in it. It’s pure joy to live an intentional life. Where sacrifice pays off. And it certainly did for you guys! God bless your family and your home! Leslye

      James couch it would have been awesome if we had not had to put our homestead on hold. Our problem came in when family we were responsible for lived in another city. And it was not just one family member it was several. But when we made the sacrifice to let go of our own dreams for a while to care for our parents many doors were opened. And it brought me back to an area that I can get help for my psoriatic arthritis mutalins. Mutalins is the most extreme form of arthritis you can have. So for me to have done as much as I have is a miracle. Very soon we will be back at it. Now that my father is cancer free. He had three surgeries and will need one more but he is going to get through it. And almost everything has been handled from my father in laws estate. That was the biggest job we have ever taken on. I’m looking forward to being in our cabin again. And moving forward with plans to improve the land. And there is a boat in our future. We are five minutes to the boat dock of a very large river in Tennessee. If I had it to do over, I would still choose taking care of our family even if it means our desires are put on hold. Family first. And then the blessing pour in. The year we had with my father in law was priceless. I wish we had another year. My dreams may have been on hold but I will not give completely up on them even with severe arthritis. Leslye

    This might be a silly question but I genuinely would love to know…How did you guys/your husband know how to do everything? I mean like everything? Like the pipes in the ground outside, where to put them, how deep to dig, just knowing to dig period, and even like knowing who to get help from, but also the simple things like how to do a door frame or when to use a table saw??? My mind is more blown on the fact that you guys were able to create this basically all DIY lol and how you guys knew what to do and how to do it. I mean sure I could google it but I wouldn’t even know WHAT I needed to google lol I am so impressed. Very happy for you guys. Hi there Lisa, thank you soooooo much for your comment.
      I honestly had ZERO clue or skills on how to build anything!!! I just started. I bought a basic Ryobi cordless set of tools and I started building stuff. First was a small stool, then some garden beds, and then WATCH THIS VIDEO….
      th-cam.com/video/vwjyv4ZD5ds/w-d-xo.html
      Skip to the middle of the video and you’ll see how CLUELESS I was about construction. NO IDEA. 🤣🤣🤣 But I somehow figured out how to build “a home for rabbits” way before I figured out how to build a home for humans.
      And then of course, I outsourced things like rough plumbing and electric. I don’t care to know those things. And then I found a friend that does construction and I paid him to do some of the work on our home and to use me as his assistant. So I was able to learn even more skills.
      But mainly, you just gotta jump in the water!

    Did you use tie downs vs a concrete foundation? That way you don't have a deed and you have way less taxes.

We bought a 3 acre wooded lot and a single wide trailer and built a 2700 sq foot 5 bedroom and 4 bathroom house with a huge front and back porch abs moved in it while we built. The first two weeks we had no plumbing or electric and used the most interesting ways to include washing dishes in tubs also lol. So many things hit home. We were so tired for a few years. We never seem to be able to stop building and improving. It was addicting and we had growing boys to help and we ended up with a beautiful place. It’s awesome what you are doing.
