Family of 6 Living in a SHED Converted Into a Tiny Home & Homesteading

  • In just two years, Kelly and Beau sold their house in the suburbs, bought 7 acres of raw land, started a permaculture homestead, and transformed a 16' x 48' shed into a beautiful and functional home where they live, work online, homeschool their kids, and run their growing homestead. Their goal is to be debt-free in their 30’s so they carefully spaced out each building project to avoid financing and stay out of debt.
    In this video they’re going to give us a full tour of their shed to house project, including the spacious open-concept kitchen and living room, the kid's sleeping lofts, the single bathroom they have for all 6 humans in the house, and the outdoor laundry room, and they're also going to talk about the building process and why they chose to convert a shed into a house.
    You can follow their adventure and see the whole shed to house project from the start here:

    Best part about shed to house living is that as kids age you can simply add another shed and boom, ya got a bedroom. Sounds crazy, but a friend of mine had one (as a teen) and it was the greatest. Honestly it's probably the reason why I went tiny living. Cheers!

    After I retired from my regular job, I went to work part time for Home Depot. We sold the type air conditioner/heat unit you have. The paper work says you save 85% on electric power over the type that uses duct work. One reason is no heat/air temp. loss in duct work. They are very good and used all over Europe for years.

    Pls tell me you have a tornado-proof underground bunker. If not, pls build one. A tornado will utterly destroy your house. You have a lovely family. It's not too expensive: Dig a hole, concrete foundation, shipping container attached to foundation, fill dirt around it...tornado comes, go inside and lock the door. Total cost about :$2,500

    • @aprisia
      @aprisia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You'll need a rock/tire barrier or something between the dirt and the container. The way a container is designed, it's actually fairly weak when it comes to pressure being exerted on its walls.

      The average new build in NZ is currently 155sqm (1660sqft) but historically it was smaller; in the '50s, 1000sqft was common. And NZ houses are usually one-storey so that's the entire floor space.
      I don't think you can compare NZ housing to the US, Canada, Australia, etc. Speaking as someone with friends and family from each of those countries.

Trying to do things by yourself is typically prohibited in most counties, so you have to hire expensive local contractors and abide by codes designed not for living necessities but to increase house marketability for the real estate market.

    • @robertb4455

      They could ad another "wing" to the house with a second shed or structure. It could include bedrooms, a third or even a 4th bath, and a room that the kids could hang out in , kind of like a rumpus room or play room. I do wonder how many more years their children will be able to go without a tv? Just watching TH-cam and some documentaries on streaming services could make a basic 42" HD TV worthwhile to mount in the kids activity/ schoolroom. I know you can do some if not all on a laptop but if you have only 2 or 3 laptops, a TV could be a better option to view certain things.
      I do like ability to build things with few or no building codes in Texas, but I doubt I could deal with more than a few days over 100 degrees.
      I do not know if their part of Texas sees very many tornadoes, but that would be an issue without having a building attached to a foundation with some hurricane strapping.

    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@robertb4455 Tornadoes can reach much higher pressures and wind speeds than Hurricanes. So if that's a issue then they would need a lot more than hurricane strappings. More like a underground storm shelter or bomb proof concrete and/or steel panic room.
      If you can afford an ICF/concrete constructed home then it can probably handle up to around 250 MPH winds. But an F-5 means up to 261-318 mph winds and it can theoretically reach an F-6 for even higher wind speeds. So take tornado proof home with a grain of salt, along with how expensive they can be and why most just build a shelter and have insurance to make rebuilding easier...

Yeah maybe prices will go down insignificantly which is unlikely anyway, but will you automatically find money to purchase a house and become a homeowner? Don't think so. That was my exact suggestion. Depending where they're located, no less than $500/month/THoW for a land lease. A 5 to 10 TH community would gross $2,500 to $5,000 every month.
      Start with IBC totes for fresh water. Require composting toilets and filter grey water. Over time, develop services for the TH community. Dig a well for water. Build a drain field. Create a ground array for solar electricity generation.
      Pretty soon, $500/month/THoW becomes more like $750 to $1,000 per month, and gross income grows to between $3,750 for five units on the low-end to $10,000 for 10 units on the high-end. Rents for "park" model tiny houses on piers from sheds would be even more (requiring greater investment, of course).
      Any way one looks at it, they would have no problem finding tenants. The TH community would readily embrace this concept to the extent that they'd have a waiting list in short order.
      This is a very viable plan for a six-figure income year over year over year over year...
      Let me know if y'all want to pull the trigger on this concept. I have decades of experience in every trade, and have done just about everything there is to do from the foundation to the ridge. Carpentry. Plumbing. Electrical. Solar. Batteries. Composting toilets. Water filtration (both fresh and grey). You name it.
      I'm a single, empty-nester who's 100% mobile, self-contained and self-sufficient in my self-converted Tiny Rig!
