I've always preferred this version of Voltron to the original. The main reason? A lot more playability than the original. Fifteen individual vehicles, which combine to make three environmental "super vehicles", which then combine to make the super robot. That wins, hands down compared to just five lion mechs, which just only combine to make the robot.

And yes, some of the vehicles do look a bit silly, especially the ones that make the body, but most of them look playsable, like the feet, the forearms, the helicopters, the jets, the submarines...
It's seriously cool that Bandai takes Soul of Chogokin line seriously and releases are better and better(as opposed to Takara) but on the other hand release schedule leaves something to be desired Maybe 2 more eternities and they'll make Genesic Gaogaigar

How exactly did they go from “Robot Lions” to 15 “Vehicles” in the Voltron series? Is this another Robotech situation where Americans just take other robot series in adaptation and merge two different shows together?
Exactly that, they're two different robot series that got adapted under one brand; There was supposed to be a third series adapted but it never came to fruition, though. What's even funnier is that Voltron was intended to be a different show but they got the wrong anime to adapt.
Lion Voltron is from golion, and dairugger xv is from the series dairugger xv, both unrelated. It's definitely a Macross/robotech situation. Story goes the guy was watching a bunch of anime shows looking to do what had been done for robotech/macross, and saw a show of a super robo with a lion head and got it..but there was a mix-up and he got golion instead of daitanius, and after Voltron was a hit they found another similar show and it was dairugger which they just called Voltron... There was a nother series added as a trilogy too but never animated
