At least that was an OEM part. If only the repairer had used the parts diagram to order the OEM sensor, OEM front wiring harness (instead of repairing it) and OEM brackets (instead of using the wrong brackets) in the first.
Thank you Dan for this video ! While it may seem simple to some to find where a short to ground is situated or why it occurs, having a method to apply is key. I guess the other shop will have to do some explaining to an unhappy client. I mean if I was that customer I would certainly not agree to pay for the park assist module the car didn't need. Not to speak of the fact they installed a sensor made of chinesium, which caused much trouble and delay. As a customer I would expect a commercial rebate for the delay and not paying the brand new but unnecessary module.
Oh hey, welcome to my world! I have the unmitigated joy of dealing with this kind of thing all the time, and it is very annoying. I'm shocked to hear the sensors come pre-painted, though! I can't say I've ever seen that. Lucky! With 6-sensor systems like this, often times the outer corner sensors will be a different part number from the inner four sensors, and the two are not interchangeable. I run into this a lot on GM trucks and SUVs, body shops just yarfing all the sensors back in wherever and then it takes down the entire park sensing system. :(
That is correct the inner 4 are Pdc sensors and the outer sensors are Pma sensors. When you swap them on this Bmw you'll get a faultcode that tells you the wrong partnumber is installed. This is because on this Bmw the sensors communicate through Lin-bus and they send an identifier to the control unit. If by accident you swap them you'll find out because of the faultcode. The pre-painting of these sensors makes sense. The ensure good operation they need a certain thickness of paint. It's safer for Bmw to keep this under control in house.
Had the same problem on a Opel Adam , the body shop swopped around all the sensors the two bumper end sensors have a wider range detection compared the the inner four (different part numbers)
Top video weer zoals altijd.
I had this kind of issue on multiple brands, not only on BMW. Also on Mercedes. Even genuine parking sensors can fail over time and cause short circuit. On some BMW-s(E65,E60) this kind of short can damage the PDC module. A small transistor fails due that. It can be replaced, but before reinstalling the module, short circuit needs to be eliminated.
Funny how there are almost never simple cars like Citroen 2CV or Fiat 126 on Dan's channel! 🤔 It's almost like the more complicated the car, the more the points of failure. 😂
Great video as ever Dan (apart from the missing bloopers!) but I’m itching to know if that original control unit was actually bad, don’t tell me you didn’t try swapping it back?
That would have been my approach, too. If there are signs of a previous repair near the faulty equipment, go and search it there. There is no such thing as coincidence.

Great video, Dan. Expertly explained! In the words of Eric O (SMA) "After-market garbage." 🤣
🤣🤣👍
Great application of logic Dan shame about the Temu sensor!
Yes but another lesson learned on cheap sensors
Cheap parts must never be placed in a BMW specially one relative new, great videp Danny!
Thank you
Nice diagnosis Dan!
Thanks!
YOU ARE A VERY KIND AND GREAT TEACHER ❤
Thanks for the kind words
Great job. I HATE people using "parts cannon" to solve problems... Who is going to pay the new parking ECU the other workshop installed for nothing??
Thanks for your comment
At least that was an OEM part. If only the repairer had used the parts diagram to order the OEM sensor, OEM front wiring harness (instead of repairing it) and OEM brackets (instead of using the wrong brackets) in the first.
Thank you Dan for this video
The guys at that shop are great guys and wont let the customer pay for any unnecessary parts.
Great video thanks Dan. I wish I could show my customers this when they tell me they can get a sensor cheaper on eBay for £10 instead of £100 🤦♂️
😁👍
Good to see you again Dan. Great work as always.
Thank you
Oh hey, welcome to my world!
Cracking diagnosis Dan, nice 👏👏🙂
Thank you!
Great video, even better tutorial on how to look for the issue.
Thanks for your positive comment
Had the same problem on a Opel Adam , the body shop swopped around all the sensors the two bumper end sensors have a wider range detection compared the the inner four (different part numbers)
Yes they are different parts, on this Bmw you'll get a faultcode that tells you the wrong partnumber is installed when you swap them
As ever, very informative. Exactly the fault-finding procedures I use in my own field of electronics.
Great to hear, thanks for watching my videos
Another systematic troubleshooting ...Great video to learn from.
Thank you
Great video Dan. You were not lucky, just used common sense to figure out the issue. Nice job!
Thank you

Thats great. Thank you very much
Great video.. love learning from you as a DIY auto guy.
Great to have you here!
Enjoy? Oh my, YES! Having been parts guy in a collision repair shop we also knew about new parts needing a function test.
Glad you liked the video! Thanks for watching
My wife just shouted 😮..Dan has posted oooo.....
🤣🤣🤣 The moment she realised you could't be disturbed for the next 20 minutes 🤣🤣
Top video weer zoals altijd.
I’m a simple man I see a new diagnose Dan video I click
🤣🤣👍
@@Diagnosedan Dan can you please do a normal diag like a underboost condition
Another great video Dan. Very interesting. I thought park assist would require microwave sensors ! Thank you.
If the used microwave sensors you could heat up your lunch with it🤣
I had this kind of issue on multiple brands, not only on BMW.
Thanks for your comment
Funny how there are almost never simple cars like Citroen 2CV or Fiat 126 on Dan's channel! 🤔 It's almost like the more complicated the car, the more the points of failure. 😂
Great video as always. You ned to be careful with these Temu/Aliexpress sensors...
Thats right
Great video as ever Dan (apart from the missing bloopers!) but I’m itching to know if that original control unit was actually bad, don’t tell me you didn’t try swapping it back?
I later found out that the one i showed in the video is actually the new one. They had already swapped the old one back.
@@Diagnosedan so they buy an in required BMW controller but a snide sensor. Quality!
Wel done dan great job Good to to see you back
Thank you
Damn Dan. You’re still a freakin’ genius!!! Awesome dude!!!👍👍
Thank you very much
That would have been my approach, too. If there are signs of a previous repair near the faulty equipment, go and search it there. There is no such thing as coincidence.
Exactly!
Great find Dan. Thanks very much for the video
You are welcome
Well done again Dan top work as usual
Thanks!
